Well, apart from guessing where to put the engine support, and it doesn't look like there's any cushion (rubber, wood etc) between the screw jack and the engine's sump. I wouldn't want dents or scratches on a painted sump that later on, may rust because of that lost paint.
I am the original owner of my 2015 Audi S3 with over 180,000 miles on it. Did 99% of the work on the car myself. There are some days that i dream of owning an RS5, an S6 or some other "higher end" model. But then i see videos like this where you need to remove tons of drivetrain components to fix simple things, and reality hits. I'm going to give my S3 a big hug after this video !

Yes! I’ve had 1.8T’s, 2.0T’s and they are infinitely more serviceable than the 4.2L S4 and RS4 I once owned. I did everything on these cars and don’t miss the 4.2L one bit.
"Oh look, I can buy an Audi A8 on BAT for cheap. Then I can work on it in my driveway. All that luxury for a low price. Perfect !". This video dispels a lot of myths. Years of experience; all the tools; a car lift. And even then, it's 8 straight hours on your feet, working overhead, 2 man job at times. Stressed about not breaking anything when you're moving it out of the way. And the pressure of getting it right first time, every time. (And then the owner chooses to put in a used part for a wear item. The mind boggles ... ). Johnny, you earned your money on this one and no mistake. Great videography as always. We love you too Johnny and team ! Greetings from Prague. CZ
Any time I think of buying a Porsche, Audi ,or BMW just watch a few of these videos. The only way to go is to buy new with warranty if you can afford it.
@@iceyu2235 true but eight hours is a bit much for a power steering pump. @@groosbro1 Yeah they aren't all built this way, it's the Germans - they don't give a toss about long term reliability or repar-ability, they want you to replace the car every 3-5 years so no effort is put in to engineering to last. Assholes, the lot of them.
Watching Jonny is refreshing. Audis are nice looking cars, but watching this, makes me shy away. Probably have to pull the engine to replace the air filter...keep up the good work!!
Thank you for posting these videos. It’s a warning to anyone thinking about buying a used Audi or BMW. Get ready to pay $$$$ for repairs and maintenance. Before the BMW fan bois chime in saying “just do your regular maintenance and it’ll be fine” NO! Regular maintenance shouldn’t include chasing and replacing all the leaking and cracking plastic parts in your engine bay, nor should it include dropping the engine to replace a water pump!
I have a 2008 Audi Allroad 3,0 TDI here in Latvia - and currently, the steering rack is leaking. Before that, there was a tiny leak on the hydraulic fluid reservoir (which is EXACTLY the same part as on this A8). I bought a used reservoir for EUR 15,00 - washed and blew it with air several times for about an hour - but apparantly, even that didn't wash it completely out of old fluid. So I put it on the car and filled back up with original Febi green liquid - in one week, my steering rack started to leak like crazy (never had any problems with it before). So now I've bought a new/refurbished steering rack from DRI Automotive (EUR 300), a new steering pump from JP Group (EUR 80 - but similar prices are available in a scope of +- 30 EUROS from Meyle, Bosch, etc) - a new reservoir again (this time completely new for EUR 28 during the black friday deals) and new hoses from Metzger and AIC to and from the rack (EUR 120 in total). In addition - the low pressure hoses to and from the heat-exchanger will also have to be replaced (will go for aftermarket silicone transparent ones - just to be able so see what flows inside of them). As I'll do the work myself, I consider to have survived the ordeal rather easily/cheaply. All the system will have to be replaced - just because of the crap that I thought I washed out - but apparently, didn''t - from the used reservoir. The complete front of the vehicle needs to come off to do the job (the pump is driven by the belt, not by the axle/differential as on this car). LONG STORY SHORT - I would highly advise the owner not to FAFF AROUND and spend the extra 100 dollars - and buy a new steering pump. Unless he wants to spend again - and spend more. Greetings from Latvia, good luck.

You gotta love it. They drive it till the wheels fall off and have a "big trip" lined up right after the repairs are done, not giving you a chance to take your time with the job.
A friend of mine had a V8 A8, and ran it for twelve months. It was like getting a wish out of his system. It WAS a lovely car to ride in, but it cost a fortune over twelve months so that having passed its UK MOT he sold it for not a small loss. He has a small Peugeot now. The Audi was eight years old, and Pug was two years older and has run faultlessly for eighteen months since the change. Was the last simple quality car the Volvo 240? I had two of those. Okay that petrol was like mother's milk to them, but otherwise repairs were infrequent, easily done [so garage labour not a catastrophe] and the parts were no more than Ford or GM. Nowadays there are no easy to work on cars! Best wishes from George
Customers do pay for special tools, that is a small portion of why we charge the first hour of diagnosis, to help collect money for special needs, training, subscriptions, etc. We do not consider our normal labor and the shop profits to pay for special needs to help us do the job better. The shop can pay for a shop heater or air-con unit. If we want to buy a nice bent wrench, that is on the individual tech. I won't get into a long list of what is special to the tech and a must-have for the shop, thanks for the video.
I don’t think I would put a used part in that location. But I’m sure a new one cost as much as used Camry. Lol Johnny seems very real. We love you too Ninja man.
They are trying to run the vehicle on a shoe string budget. They are probably stretched to the maximum financially making car payments and trying to maintain a vehicle that makes them look rich. Trying to impress people they will never meet by driving a vehicle they really can't afford...
Respect, unbelievable work just to change a PS pump. 😮 Put me right off the D4 S8/v8 cars. I have a 2016 U.K. A8 D4 3 litre tdi, hope that pump is easier to get to.
Great job you are one great mechanic. Love how clean your shop is and well lit up. Definitely a shop id love to work at and definitely take my car to be worked on too.

I recall doing one in a Honda J30 engine. I believe it was a removal of the serpentine belt, pulley, and some bolts for the pump, and add some new fluid during installation. That's it! Taking off the subframe... 8 hour job... lol. I'm a family man - finding 10 minutes to hand wash a car is already difficult
It’s time to sell my 2012 A8 asap 😂 what a nightmare to deal with. It took me a whole day just to replace rear coolant pipe. But I have to admit that it drives better than my 750 or s550
I've been perusing the internet for a used A8, found most of them really cheap but after watching this, lord do I regret even having the intention of buying one. My god this things have to be fantastic when new but at a certain age for every great feature the mechanical aspects brings the car down tenfold.
i specialize in audi a8 and drive a 600 000km example. The best a8 are the 2004-2007 . No direct injection, no timing chain, belt in the front with normal accessories instead of PTO driven. Also better subframe in aluminium. 2011 and up have steel subframe which rot quickly. Ive changed a lot of them. The 2011 up are roughly 1500$ maintenance a year. But you need to start with a good one and those are more costly up front. Service records are want you want
UNBELIEVABLE 🤯 Such patience, persistence & professionalism. One of my always wanted cars A8/S8, however I think I'll stick to 460 Lexus 😅 Love the interaction with Hoovey, Car Wizard & Ninja 👍
With just a bit more thought, Audi could have made this job nearly impossible. I'm surprised they didn't have the pump inside the engine, driven by the timing chain. That's the sort of lunacy you come to expect from German cars now.
Paying for all that labour and giving them a 2nd hand pump to refit. Either the customer couldn't get a new one in time or they're stupidly expensive. It's still a big risk that it may fail again. I fitted a cheap door lock module from ebay to my VW. It was 9 times cheaper than the VW part. But I did the 3 hour job myself so it was worth the risk of the part not working.
Love watching Jonny even though I dont do any work on my car apart from the odd wash. Whatever Jonny charges for jobs like that it will not be enough! it will still be less than main dealer rates and it will be properly done. Main dealer in the UK are only good with cars under warranty needing oil and filters,
All I can think during this entire video is, every design engineer should have to take apart and rebuild the product they engineer. I owned one Audi A6 2L turbo, and I was fortunate enough to have it totaled before I had to put too much money into it. Beautiful car, drove great, but after seeing this, I am so happy to have replaced it with an Acura.
Jonny, your fantastic! I love your opennes, honesty and professionalism, you have the same 'attitude' as busgreasemonkey whom i also follow. We love you to and your a great montor and example, with your Team :)
These jobs sometimes are a pain. All we can do is just keep it slow and steady and keep things moving along. Filming will get in the way as it makes you stop and perhaps explain things but that's the nature of the beast. Maybe Velocity can get you one of those wireless DJI mics and you can just talk as you work and not necessarily have to stop to point yourself at the camera since that's where the mic is. Keep up the great job Johnny. :)
Is not often you get a honest mechanic I can see this guy is honest as other couple guys I watch in TH-cam my respect for all of this mechanics is not an easy job
I like your videos but I couldn't finish this one. It just confirms in me that I'll never own one of these over complicated, designed for assembly (definitely not for repair) cars. They may be comfy, they may handle and perform wonderfully but this kind of repair complexity and cost makes them garlic to this vampire, Kryptonite to this superman. No way Jose.
I don't blame the customer nor car ninja too , sometimes u need to work with used parts, as the oem or genuine take so long to have them and install on the car. Car ninja you are great!!!
Owner of A8 D4 here. I recently had to replace a small $18 part leaking coolant and it took 4 hours as my mechanic had to take half of the suspension to do that so I feel the pain. Other than that A8 is lovely machine not so much when you have to service it.
@@Nightrunnergunner my D4 broke down a month ago, catastrophic engine damage, only fix was the engine replacement, I've decided to sell it to my mechanic for basically parts price. After "investing" more than 10K in it, I had to get rid of it like that. Best car I ever owned. Do I recommend it? No.

i used to like BMWs and AUDIs and mercs before i knew much about working on cars, i'm mostly a DIY type but these videos help my urges of buying anything german
Getting a used pump put in mine along with motor mounts/flex pipes at an independent shop. Labor for all this is over $3500. But its a luxury tank and still cheaper than a car payment.
'By the time I do two of these, I'll be an expert..... All this for a tiny power steering pump... and this (replacement) is a used part...' Jonny, I see Expert Status in the near future.
Crazy design. I suggest every German engineer spend a month in Johnny's shop. Placing wearable parts in places that require 8 hours work to replace is insane.
I always put a hood stut clamp when I'm using the engine support. I had a set go bad on an e90 one time and the hood slammed down on it and wrecked the hood. It was an expensive lesson

A small Peugeot ! He REALLY got tired !
@@rodrigobelinchon2982 Everyone gets old in the end!
Best wishes from George
I bought a new Jimny. Thats easy to work on.
Always a pleasure to watch a Master Mechanic at work.
Insane to put a used power steering pump in with that much work involved. Customers aren't always right.
You guys are my favorite mechanic channel. Top quality work!
Përshëndetjet më të mira, nga Gjermania.
Keep Up the good Work 🙌
Johnny is a class act.
If I need my BMW worked on, I’m driving or towing it to you from St Louis! I’ve been watching you long enough to know you are fair to your customers!
I don’t think I would put a used part in that location. But I’m sure a new one cost as much as used Camry. Lol
Johnny seems very real. We love you too Ninja man.
I agree, I’m surprised that he agreed to install it. I wouldn’t.
For that amount of work, the customer was silly to provide a used part. Unless new parts weren’t available.
If the customer was good at making decisions he wouldn't own that car. Super complicated German disaster area That's now 11 years old.
They are trying to run the vehicle on a shoe string budget.
They are probably stretched to the maximum financially making car payments and trying to maintain a vehicle that makes them look rich.
Trying to impress people they will never meet by driving a vehicle they really can't afford...
Buying things you don't need with money you don't have to impress people you don't know.
As explained in the description, the customer needed it done quickly and a used part was all he could get on short notice.
@@realcarninja That's true. Getting an OEM part can take some time, especially if the part is placed on back-order.
Wow! When I stuff like this, the more I love my E46 330 Ci which I lovingly maintain myself.
"I Do Cars" channel just tore down an Audi V10 - talk about insanity, got to see it to believe it. AC compressor and PS pump are chain drive / cam shaft driven, Alternator is water cooled and cost $1500 plus.
These videos are the best advertisements for Japanese and Korean cars ever.
need more shops like yours, and with honesty such as yours. great channel!
Johnny you are the Zen Master of European cars. Calm cool and collected are you
It’s time to sell my 2012 A8 asap 😂 what a nightmare to deal with. It took me a whole day just to replace rear coolant pipe. But I have to admit that it drives better than my 750 or s550
As an engineed, I am amased how efficient use of that space was - almost no unused space at all.
UNBELIEVABLE 🤯
Such patience, persistence & professionalism.
One of my always wanted cars A8/S8, however I think I'll stick to 460 Lexus 😅
Love the interaction with Hoovey, Car Wizard & Ninja 👍
OMG! That's really insane! The things you have to remove just to replace that part!
wish my mechanic worked like you. He's had my wife's car for over 2 months and works on it when he can.
With just a bit more thought, Audi could have made this job nearly impossible. I'm surprised they didn't have the pump inside the engine, driven by the timing chain. That's the sort of lunacy you come to expect from German cars now.
Jonny is an honest man, I wish you all the best.
I wish I lived close by to Johnnys shop I’d take both of my BMWs to him in a heartbeat
This one that seemed painful to say the least. Being a mechanic is not easy. You have to love it to keep going.....
Jonny, your fantastic! I love your opennes, honesty and professionalism, you have the same 'attitude' as busgreasemonkey whom i also follow. We love you to and your a great montor and example, with your Team :)
Nice work! That looked rough! Love all the videos👏
Audi is like "Hey, we designed this car to engineering perfection, but you have to remove the engine to add washer fluid. Now give us $80k."
lol yea
These jobs sometimes are a pain. All we can do is just keep it slow and steady and keep things moving along. Filming will get in the way as it makes you stop and perhaps explain things but that's the nature of the beast. Maybe Velocity can get you one of those wireless DJI mics and you can just talk as you work and not necessarily have to stop to point yourself at the camera since that's where the mic is.
Keep up the great job Johnny. :)
Is not often you get a honest mechanic I can see this guy is honest as other couple guys I watch in TH-cam my respect for all of this mechanics is not an easy job
Kind of like finding an honest doctor.
Coolant tank reservoir is another must do on these. Can total out your car if faulty and left long enough.
Im basically rebuilding my D4 😅 have spent over 8k in repairs & maintenance in 4 years
@@Nightrunnergunner my D4 broke down a month ago, catastrophic engine damage, only fix was the engine replacement, I've decided to sell it to my mechanic for basically parts price. After "investing" more than 10K in it, I had to get rid of it like that. Best car I ever owned. Do I recommend it? No.
@@Nightrunnergunner Going on 9 years for my 2012 A8l. Two harnesses failed me from rust that were looped out. Nothing else yet.
Johnny inspired me to do two important things.
1- Wrench on my M62TU
2- Finish my automotive tech degree.
only kids born after 2009,dont know what mechanic job means! Is responsability, courage, study, hard work, lost nights and days, and a lot of money spend!Good joob
Haters are always going to hate. If I could send you my cars from Northern California, I would in a heartbeat. Keep up the great work..
Porsche late 924,944,951,968 is extremely easy to change PS pump, big changes since back in 80s
I preferred the raw documentary feel of the productions without the rights-free music added. Made this channel special. That's just me.
Johnny definitely a masochist for working on these nightmares.
Dad of a buddy of mine had an A8 where the adjustable ride hight was kaput. Woke up one day to find he now had a slammed audi lol. Fixing it was an insane costly repair, not in parts but labour. They had to drop the engine to replace a part that was like €300 😂
This is why I own an older Chrysler. It may be junk but it’s super easy to work on.
This is the perfect car to park by the end of the drive. Won’t run can’t be stolen.
faxz
Did the pump work!!!!
i used to like BMWs and AUDIs and mercs before i knew much about working on cars, i'm mostly a DIY type but these videos help my urges of buying anything german
Great attitude for a tough job!
Getting a used pump put in mine along with motor mounts/flex pipes at an independent shop. Labor for all this is over $3500. But its a luxury tank and still cheaper than a car payment.
I'm glad your back is ok Car Ninja! Good job sir!
'By the time I do two of these, I'll be an expert..... All this for a tiny power steering pump... and this (replacement) is a used part...' Jonny, I see Expert Status in the near future.
There goes the A8 4.2 off the car bucket list.
buy a 2004 - 2007 . Mine still strong at 600 000km
@Nordic_Mechanic WOW! That's impressive. My 2014 Touareg TDI is at 205,000mi/330700km. Best PVAG product ever.
You have the patience of a Saint.
Wow I’m dealing with this in a 2011 Audi A8 to remove the starter. Such a pain!
Where can I find the tables for repair jobs. Labor rates and hours. Like this is an 8 hour job. How could I compare that to a Honda Civic
Take or leave this - but I enjoy the test drives at the end to see how they turned out. Realize u can’t always do it. But it’s nice when u can.
We do when we can...it's just not always so easy to do. It's a time thing.
Absolutely insane for P/S pump! Thanks for the video Ninja!
I had to replace a watercooled alternator on a 2004 A8 W12. I had to remove the whole front and the radiator, it still was a pain to do.
You work miracles Every Day - you are amazing!!
Crazy design. I suggest every German engineer spend a month in Johnny's shop. Placing wearable parts in places that require 8 hours work to replace is insane.
Glad your back is feeling better 😊 best wishes and success to you
I always put a hood stut clamp when I'm using the engine support. I had a set go bad on an e90 one time and the hood slammed down on it and wrecked the hood. It was an expensive lesson
