Audi Insanity 2012 A8

  • A power steering pump replacement should be a relatively easy, straight forward effort. Audi didn't see it that way.
    Jonny's long time customer needed the pump replaced in his 2012 Audi A8 and he needed it done quickly for a trip the following day.
    For the sake of time the customer sourced a used pump and brought it in.
    Jonny had never done this job on this model before but he knew it wasn't going to be easy.

    I am the original owner of my 2015 Audi S3 with over 180,000 miles on it. Did 99% of the work on the car myself. There are some days that i dream of owning an RS5, an S6 or some other "higher end" model. But then i see videos like this where you need to remove tons of drivetrain components to fix simple things, and reality hits. I'm going to give my S3 a big hug after this video !

    Before the BMW fan bois chime in saying “just do your regular maintenance and it’ll be fine” NO! Regular maintenance shouldn’t include chasing and replacing all the leaking and cracking plastic parts in your engine bay, nor should it include dropping the engine to replace a water pump!

      Audi Engineer: "A decision was taken that the power steering pump should be installed onto the engine prior to installing the engine and transmission assembly into the chassis, in order to save approximately $0.07 per unit across the production run. At no point was this questioned prior to assembly of the initial production line test mules, and so there was no opportunity to examine the serviceability of the component before programmatic inertia made it impossible to alter the configuration."

    I have a 2008 Audi Allroad 3,0 TDI here in Latvia - and currently, the steering rack is leaking. Before that, there was a tiny leak on the hydraulic fluid reservoir (which is EXACTLY the same part as on this A8). I bought a used reservoir for EUR 15,00 - washed and blew it with air several times for about an hour - but apparantly, even that didn't wash it completely out of old fluid. So I put it on the car and filled back up with original Febi green liquid - in one week, my steering rack started to leak like crazy (never had any problems with it before). So now I've bought a new/refurbished steering rack from DRI Automotive (EUR 300), a new steering pump from JP Group (EUR 80 - but similar prices are available in a scope of +- 30 EUROS from Meyle, Bosch, etc) - a new reservoir again (this time completely new for EUR 28 during the black friday deals) and new hoses from Metzger and AIC to and from the rack (EUR 120 in total). In addition - the low pressure hoses to and from the heat-exchanger will also have to be replaced (will go for aftermarket silicone transparent ones - just to be able so see what flows inside of them). As I'll do the work myself, I consider to have survived the ordeal rather easily/cheaply. All the system will have to be replaced - just because of the crap that I thought I washed out - but apparently, didn''t - from the used reservoir. The complete front of the vehicle needs to come off to do the job (the pump is driven by the belt, not by the axle/differential as on this car). LONG STORY SHORT - I would highly advise the owner not to FAFF AROUND and spend the extra 100 dollars - and buy a new steering pump. Unless he wants to spend again - and spend more. Greetings from Latvia, good luck.

    A friend of mine had a V8 A8, and ran it for twelve months. It was like getting a wish out of his system. It WAS a lovely car to ride in, but it cost a fortune over twelve months so that having passed its UK MOT he sold it for not a small loss. He has a small Peugeot now. The Audi was eight years old, and Pug was two years older and has run faultlessly for eighteen months since the change.
    Was the last simple quality car the Volvo 240? I had two of those. Okay that petrol was like mother's milk to them, but otherwise repairs were infrequent, easily done [so garage labour not a catastrophe] and the parts were no more than Ford or GM.

    It’s time to sell my 2012 A8 asap 😂 what a nightmare to deal with. It took me a whole day just to replace rear coolant pipe. But I have to admit that it drives better than my 750 or s550

    @CasD1806 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dad of a buddy of mine had an A8 where the adjustable ride hight was kaput. Woke up one day to find he now had a slammed audi lol. Fixing it was an insane costly repair, not in parts but labour. They had to drop the engine to replace a part that was like €300 😂

    This is why most mechanics don't buy cars like this. Nobody wants to spend all day long working on a power steering pump on their own vehicle on their off day.

    The madness that is german engineering……”Hans it seems to me that we could make this far more complicated, for instance we could put 7 things in the way and utilize 4 different fasteners this will make it more germanic”

    Getting a used pump put in mine along with motor mounts/flex pipes at an independent shop. Labor for all this is over $3500. But its a luxury tank and still cheaper than a car payment.

  • @DIYDanCars

    They act like "German engineering" is this pretigious badge of honor when in fact they should just be truthful and call it for what it really is, "Idiotic German engineering that makes you want to shoot yourself in the face".
    All that work and the customer is putting in a "used power steering pump"?! That's definitely a sign that this owner can't afford this car.

    • @super_luke
      @super_luke ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably so that the customer take it to the Audi dealer and Audi makes more money.

    • @johndaleclarkjd3
      @johndaleclarkjd3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s money! Why would they design an engine that’s easy to work on? It drives dealer services. If they made a power steering pump easy to get to or an alternator or any other part easy to access they would lose a higher percentage of customers coming to the dealer to get it fixed. Once you look at the engineering of a vehicle from a bottom line view point you will completely understand everything they do. It’s not just German automakers doing this they all do it. Same reason most do not make a vehicle that will run 300,000 miles. There is no money in it for them and new car sales would drop. Again it’s not profitable for them.
