    I would take that radiator to a radiator shop and have it rodded out because it's probably half clogged up. It will make a world of difference.

    • @retrorevivals
      @retrorevivals  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're probably right... especially looking at all of that sediment that was in the reservoir. If we still have any overheating problems moving forward, we'll probably just replace the radiator. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Put a bottle of Redline Water Wetter in the 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. It's made for use in racing vehicles instead of antifreeze so leaks don't make the track or dragstip slick. But it still improves cooling effectiveness with antifreeze. Water Wetter alone does not protect against freezing.

    • @retrorevivals
      @retrorevivals  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment, we haven't heard of Water Wetter but will look into it!

    Great video, use 0000 steel wool on the windshield, it will cut all the crud off the glass. Then, use an ammonia base glass cleaner. Once it is clean, apply rainx on the glass for a super clean windshield. Good luck

    I think the heat shield helps keep the engine cool because it forces air around the engine from underneath the car. That other guy also made a good suggestions about pulling the radiator to make sure it’s not clogged.

    • @retrorevivals
      @retrorevivals  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! You make a good point about the heat shield. We're considering upgrading the radiator to a 4-row, just trying a few other things first to see if it's necessary right away.

      Oh my gosh, that's the best name ever. If we get a camper van, we might have to borrow that name ;-) We still need to do some more driving to know that we're officially out of the woods with the head gasket but doesn't look like any water at all in the oil which gives us hope!

    RB Mopars aren't known for blowing head gaskets. Change the radiator cap, too. The kind with a lever on it. Replacement radiators are generally economical nowadays, too. Cheap insurance.

    • @retrorevivals
      @retrorevivals  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that info! We did change the cap but didn't get one with a lever... we'll likely replace the water pump soon and, if we have any kind of overheating issues that continue, most likely swap out the radiator too. We appreciate the comment!

      @@retrorevivals make sure you get a water pump for a K-code 440, not a L-code. The K-code pumps are higher flowing. One for a '69 Chrysler 300 with a TNT motor should be the one you want.

    If overheating continues. A couple of things to look at. Shake the fan to check for "wobble" and look at the "weep hole" on the water pump for leakage. Both of these may indicate a bad water pump.

    • @retrorevivals

    If it has block drains, remove them and put water through the thermostat housing to flush the block. I don't know if there are any old time radiator shops in your area, but a good one can clean your radiator. If no luck there, a new radiator may be the solution.

    • @retrorevivals
      @retrorevivals  ปีที่แล้ว

      All great ideas, Ronald. We're a bit nervous about taking out the block drains in case we can't get them back in properly... should that be a concern? It wouldn't be a surprise at all if we had to get a new radiator soon but checking to see if there's a shop that could clean it is a good idea. Thanks!

    • @ronaldcooper7609
      @ronaldcooper7609 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retrorevivals there is a possibility that the threads might be rusted up badly in the block. If it continues to overheat after cleaning or replacing the radiator you may have no choice but give it a try.

      All the brown turds ( in the cooling system) are in the block and water pump. A complete system flush is needed otherwise you're just moving the crud from one place to another.

    Interior don't get you home! Spend your time and money on the running, driving, stopping before the " extra" things. A toilet, stove and other interior things don't matter if you can't get there. Also if you find that something major in the drivetrain shuts the project down then you haven't waisted money on " extras". Good luck and enjoy.

    Those .440 seventy six engines will take a skirted, one sixty 21 eighty thermostat! You need to get one that is specifically a skirted one because if you don't five minutes or longer, and the temple rise well over two hundred and twenty degrees!.
    I wanted to make sure as well. And everybody who responded to the question stated the same thing they changed out to a lower temperature thermostat that was not skirted and found out real quickly that the temperature rose well above two hundred and twenty within minutes!
    Not only a bag of ice in your septic tank or black tank. You wanna mix 2 bags of ice with a 1/2 gallon of bleach and then drive around! Now in your household, if you drink coffee you will notice that if you have a glass pot it will get stained from either coffee or tea? The best way to clean those is half. A picture of ice and a cup of bleach and what you do is you wish it around. Pour it out and then rinse and wash your coffee pot. It will come out looking brand spanking new!
    With that black tank, the same process will happen. But you have to put quite a bit of ice and heck. Go about 3 or 4 bags of ice in a gallon of bleach. That'll be even better when it shakes round and moves. You will be cleaning it out like it's almost brand new. The bleach reacting with the ice works as sort of a scraper. Believe me, it is the best thing you can possibly do!
    Do the coffee pot first? If you don't believe me and once you see what it looks like, you'll be amazed!
    Also, it may seem like overkill, but yes flush your cooling system! And most people will say it's excess, but you definitely need an electric cooling fan for your red! That will save you every single time! Better to be safe than sorry and having to leave Harvey overnight!

    • @retrorevivals
      @retrorevivals  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for all of the suggestions. We really went through the cooling system from top to bottom. New rad,water pump,correct thermostat, hoses and mechanical fan clutch. Harvey stays cool now. Am I seeing things or did I see rat poop in the glove box?

      Well, we can't say for certain but we found so much poop in this RV that nothing would surprise us at this point, lol! We'll need to re-watch the video to see what you saw... it's likely it was rat poo. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Should never drive a vehicle with “flip flops”. You say you’re a seatbelt fanatic so safety must be a concern. What’s on your feet is part of overall safety driving considerations.
