Honey gouramis are very social! After two of my three gouramis passed away, the last male was very sad and went into hiding for a couple of weeks and lost all of his dark belly colors and became very skittish. Once I got him 2 more friends he finally came back out after a couple of days and perked right up! He's making courting displays to the female already and I'm glad to see that he's happier again. They often go to one another and say hi with their little "arms". So I would say for sure get more than just one as it is very beneficial for their mental wellbeing.
@@NemieShakingson yes, but nothing that would scare the gourami away. Black neons, corydoras, otos... once i got him new friends he was back out and about
I've got 6 honeys in a 55-gallon tank with white clouds, albino cherry barbs, guppies & sparkling gourami. They are all doing great! I didn't know there were different colors of honeys. Will definitely be looking into that. Thanks for the great video, Irene.👍
I’ve had these guys for almost a year now and I love them so much. Very sad that a few didn’t make it through the quarantine, but the survivors are absolutely amazing! I they chase each other but never nip and have never bothered any other fish. 100% recommend these guys absolutely amazing
Hi! I'm really interested in getting some Honeys, ideally I'd like 2 males as their colours are beautiful, but I'm cautious they're going to fight each other. Have you found this to be the case? I've read it's good to keep a male and female (s) however I'd be scared about them breeding, and the male pestering the females... My real choice is do I get 2 males or 2 females? Thanks!
even though cycled, keep an eye on your nitrates, thats alot to add at once to a new tank😉 you could even add a 1/2 dose of beneficial bacteria to support your cycle from crashing. And be prepared for lots of water changes for a week or two.
@@calikitkat8429 you don't really need to mind that at all when you're bringing over filters and water from a previous tank because the beneficial bacteria are already established. Besides that the tank is understocked, overfiltered and very heavily planted so I don't share your concerns.
That's realy similar to the tank Im setting up. It's a 100l tank that I want to fill with a breeding pair of honey guramis, 10 neon tetras, one brissle nosed pleco, and 8 shrimp.
That stocking sounds sick, I’m gonna keep a 45g with 6 honey gouramis 3 wrestling halfbeaks 3 hillstream loaches Rabbit and mystery snails Blue shrimp colony
Love how the male defending its nest ignores other species. My Gourami defends vs other Gourami's but not from my Apistograma's. They actually are piecefull towards eachother. I have 5 (3 male and 2 female) and they are mixed with 4 apistograma's, a ton of corydora's and Rasbora kobatai and it all works out fine. The fact i have several males actually makes them breed sooner. Not even a month in the tank and i got my first nest with over 100 fry :) Excited to help those grow.
@@michaelmachos8969 Maybe? Not sure how old mine were when I got them, but the male will need some place at the surface with calm enough water so that he can build a bubble nest. Lots of floating plants or even a floating cup sometimes helps. I just looked on betta fish breeding articles for ideas. If that doesn't work, you may need to choose 1 male and 1 female and put them in a tank by themselves so they have peace and quiet to do some breeding. Hope that helps!
Excellent video. Appreciate that you spent time to show footage of behaviors as you spoke to them. Well organized and presented! I look forward to more.
I’ve got 2 honey gourami’s in a 125 gallon tank with Uaru, Angelfish, Severum’s and electric blue Acara. I know they are not supposed to be compatible.. but they all grew up in the 125 together and get along just fine.
I finally found the gold variant at a Big Al's aquarium store not far from where I live. I bought two of them for my 29 gallon community tank. I think I got a male and a female, but it's hard to tell because they are very small (about 1"/2.5 cm counting the tail). They are very peaceful, and don't seem to interact with my two dwarf gouramis or any of the other fishes. They spend most of their time in the plants, but last night they were up in the top of the aquarium. One interesting thing I saw was the two of them swimming around each other in what looked like breeding behaviour. I don't think it was because of their small size (they must be juveniles) and the fact that it happened at the lower mid-level of the aquarium. I'm really looking forward to their getting larger. Incidentally, I keep my aquarium at 21C, and from what I read on the internet, this is not too cool for Honey Gouramis unless you are breeding them.
I have 1 gold honey and I had 2 wild all in a 20g tank and they got along very well, until the 2 wilds started attacking everything in sight. I don't think they were protecting nests because I'm fairly sure they were all male, but they both seemed to claim opposite corners. I took the wilds out and now even though nobody is attacking him anymore, my gold honey has definitely become very reserved. I'd love to get another gold honey to keep him company but my local Petco hasn't had them in a long time.
Thanks for the info! I've been looking into the dwarf gourami for my 36 bow. I think I will look a little bit more into the honey and see what will work best for me. 😊
Loved this! Purchased a male Sunset Thick-lipped gourami (often confused for honey gouramis, they're also peaceful but get to about 4-5") a few days ago and he's been lovely! Very shy at first but after a few days he's been coming out of his shell and he's a very nice, active centerpiece fish who gets along great with the platies and pygmy cories!
One word of warning, a full grown Gourami loves shrimp and mine regularly eats my baby cherry shrimp. It’s a natural population control so I don’t mind. Enough shrimp make it to maturity to keep the tank populated.
I love my male honey gourami. So peaceful. Sometimes he'll reach out to touch the other fish with his feelers. I just can't find females ANYWHERE. None of my LFS carry them because they say they don't sell.
Hi, I recently got a honey gourami for my community tank. So far, I have been giving micro pellets and sinking pellets for the tank. I noticed that it has been grazing on the algae in the tank frequently. 😅 Should I get some worms (live/frozen) for them too? 🤔
I love honey gouramis, I have four and they are beautiful and interesting fish, however, I do think their reputation as a peaceful fish can be a bit misleading as they are capable of being as aggressive as any other gourami. I have a male who lives alone now as he will not tolerate the presence of any other fish. When I introduced him and a female to my densely planted 90 litre tank he pinned the female honey, two (much larger) powder blue gouramis and school of tetras into one corner of the tank and would not let anyone leave it. For a week. I've since made several attempts to put him in community tanks and the aggressive behaviour immediately starts up again, no matter the other fish or order or temperature. My first female honey also tore up the fins of my other two female honeys when I first introduced them in a 50 litre tank. The three females now cohabitate just fine in my largest community tank, but I had to be careful to introduce the aggressive female last to curb her territorial behaviour. Wonderful fish, but beginners should still keep in mind that they are a gourami and capable of bullying.
I agree, I just got a honey gourami and he seems chill but the tank mates are plecos and Cory's. My clown pleco is mean af and fights with everyone, same with my female and male betta, night and day, these fish have personality and whenever there are potentially carnivorous tendencies along with aggression it can be bad news, research carefully.
In my experience, I had a pair leftover after the third died and one become very aggressive towards the other. Like most fish, 2 is not ideal. But an amazing fish as a 1 of or 3+ shoal

Every single honey gourami I have had has died. Mine seem to start floating around upside down and sorts and then pass away. One day they're fine and the next they are swimming upside down and then dead. I have checked all water parameters and tried so many things but they just don't wanna live so I gave up.
I went to my LFS to buy a honey gourami (trichogaster chuna) but they sold me a sunset honey gourami (also called sunset thicklip gourami, trichogaster labiosa). I'm so afraid that it'll eat my Ember Tetra! I thought it was bigger than usual, but they said it was the same and that it was an adult. I'm so mad now!

Anyone know if they’re safe with cherry shrimp? I’ve read lots of contradicting stuff on Google. Would adult shrimp be safe and comfortable with them? (I do expect them to eat baby shrimp unless they have good hiding spots)
Careful! A true Honey Gourami is a Trichogaster Chuna…small and peaceful…the one that everyone loves. Some of the “Red” Honey Gourami and “Gold” Honey Gourami are actually Trichogaster Colisa…larger and more aggressive. And sometimes they are Chuna/Colisa hybrids. The buyer may not see the size difference or aggression until they mature. Why hybrids? This is done to introduce more color…but this practice can also impart bigger size and not so nice personality. It’s all about money…higher color means more sales…and sometimes the seller fudges and calls it a Honey Gourami because of the popularity of that fish. If you’re looking for a true Honey Gourami, buy from a reputable dealer who can guarantee that your fish is not a Colisa and not a hybrid.
These fish seem to do better alone or in a group of at least three, better five or more with more females than males. This helps to split up agression. I observed that in my pearl gouramis and my green neons. They also need lots of cover and space so that each male can get a big enough territory with some extra space for the females.
I just went to the local fish store to get a Honey Gourami earlier today but they were out of stock. They had Dwarf Gouramis but I didn't want them because they can be aggressive. This video is taunting me hahaha
I love Honey Gourami, but I find them to be such weak fish. I have one that's doing great, but it took me a few go arounds to find one who would live through QT. Or if they lived through QT they died after transferring to their main tank. Hopefully I don't jinx my one survivor by posting this LOL!

If you’re looking for a true Honey Gourami, buy from a reputable dealer who can guarantee that your fish is not a Colisa and not a hybrid.
Bought a beautiful honey gourami and got it home and it lost all it's color; what am I doing wrong??? =(
Some how gouramis did not do well in my tank, whether kissing, blue, yellow or honey. Every time one would bully other
These fish seem to do better alone or in a group of at least three, better five or more with more females than males. This helps to split up agression. I observed that in my pearl gouramis and my green neons. They also need lots of cover and space so that each male can get a big enough territory with some extra space for the females.
can i keep 2 same sex honey gouramis in a 55 litre/ 12 gallon?
I just went to the local fish store to get a Honey Gourami earlier today but they were out of stock. They had Dwarf Gouramis but I didn't want them because they can be aggressive. This video is taunting me hahaha
Lol! Hopefully they come back in stock sooner than later.
I miss Irene 😢
I love Honey Gourami, but I find them to be such weak fish. I have one that's doing great, but it took me a few go arounds to find one who would live through QT. Or if they lived through QT they died after transferring to their main tank. Hopefully I don't jinx my one survivor by posting this LOL!
I think dwarf gouramis are kinda tacky.
