I really wanted to get some honey gouramis but I just couldn't find any where I live, so I settled on dwarf gouramis and pearl gouramis. They are also very peaceful and beautiful fish that live very harmoniously together with my neon tetras and neon rainbow fish, and even though they've grown big enough to potentially eat my cherry shrimp, they never do.

I have 2 golden honey gouramis a male and female in a 20g long and he's right if you have less than 6, keep them a lone. Mine as they were younger Hung out together and played together all the time, but now as they're adults they tend to be a little territorial. Thanks for posting this. I didn't know about the colour adaptation before. I have two of the gold variety in a 29 gallon planted aquarium with a light background. My two are considerably lighter than yours. They are also much smaller; about the size of the harlequin rasboras that are also in my aquarium. Interestingly, I have two dwarf gouramis that were there first; these guys are much larger than my honeys. The larger of the two dwarfs occasionally chases the smaller one, but totally ignores the honey gouramis. One other interesting aspect of their colour - when I first got them they were yellow without much other colour. Eventually, the one that grew faster developed a prominent black horizontal stripe, so I now know she's a female.

Answered the questions I had about grouping. I had tried adding a betta to my 29H community but he was just too grumpy so now he gets to live permanently in my 10 gallon quarantine tank. I'm pulling out the spare tank as the new quarantine and am in the search for a new centre-piece with my harlequin rasboras and cherry barbs. A single honey gourami just may be at the top of my list for now. My other top consideration is a pair or trio of same-sex platys ( I'm not interested in any breeding).

@@jeffalbillar7625 I totally understand. I'm old too, lol, and way back when the kids had a community tank in the living room, I'd take them to the pet store and let them pick the fish they wanted. The last time we ever went they picked out the "pretty pink kissing fish,"
Uh huh...big nasty pink gouramis, within 2 days they killed every fish in the tank and then were fighting with each other. The kids were crying, the tank had just gotten to where it was cycled or balanced to where it was keeping fish alive, and the kids were done with fish after that. They still laugh and talk about...remember those pink "kissing fish??" They were so horrible. The "kids" are now 35 and 42, so yeah, I really am old. Back then I knew nothing about fish and believed everything the pet store told us. Thank God for the internet and all these fish channels. Something really important to note, it looks like the fish you have aren't actually Honey Gourami. Those are Sunset Thick Lipped Gourami. You can tell by the tail. Honey Gourami always have color in their tails, while Thick Lipped Gourami have much clearer tails than their body. From watching the video, I think all of your Gourami have clearer tails. They generally have very similar care requirements, but Thick Lipped Gourami get larger, around 3-4 inches verses the 2 inches that Honey Gourami get, and thus need a bit larger of a tank than Honey Gourami. They can also be a touch more aggressive than Honey Gourami, though they're generally still very peaceful.

Just a word of caution based on my experience with a Honey Gourami. I have a 15 gallon planted tank with neon tetras, kjuli loaches, 3 cherry shrimp and 1 mystery snail. I decided to add 1 male Honey Gourami as a centerpiece based on all the recommendations as a peaceful and "sweet" fish. This is the first time in 30 years of experience with aquariums that I decided to take a fish back to the store. This juvenile honey gourami was super bully with the poor mystery snail, harassing the snail all day (except for when I was feeding the tank that the gourami got distracted eating) and then from one day to the next the honey gourami also hunted down all my cherry shrimp. Only one survived with half of the legs missing and hiding all day below a catappa leaf. I immediately returned the gourami back to the store without even asking for a refund. What a bad experience! And was a nightmare to capture the gourami with all the driftwood and plants I have in my tank. Totally regret getting this fish. Maybe you have better luck!

Hi. Great video about the Honey Gourami. I just added one to my 10 gallon which also has Ember tetras and they get along really well. Any suggestions for which Gourami I could add to my 20 gallon that has 7 Cherry Barbs that are great fish but VERY assertive at feeding time (they always try to steal food from my pleco)? I think a Honey Gourami may end up hiding and not getting enough food. I guess I’m looking for a semi-aggressive Gourami that won’t let the barbs activity (not just at feeding. They’re always active) cause the Gourami to hide. The Pearl Gourami is out since I prefer a larger tank for that sized-Gourami. Thank you.

I originally planned to keep her with my Giant Danios, but she's clearly afraid of them. Meanwhile, she seems to gets along well with Corydoras (Bronze and Peppered) and Bristlenose Plecos. Any suggestions for tankmates?

If I put a honey gourami in a 10 gallon with a mystery snail and some shrimp would it get lonely? I've heard they can be really shy if they're the only fish in a tank, but I would love one in there!

I have worried that my single HG is lonely, and would love to know what you think. I've had him or her for a few years. Currently in a 20 gallon with two schools of corydoras (pygmy, napoensis). Decent amount of planting, driftwood etc, but a lot of open space in the tank too. What do you think, Jason, or others who have kept groups - Do they actually LIKE to be together, or just tolerate it? And if they do like it, would it still make sense to add more when this one has been alone for several years? I could potentially switch to a bigger tank, so don't worry about the stocking levels, I'm asking more about the social / enrichment issues.

Everybody says what you say, that the honey gourami is the most peaceful fish ever. So I got a beautiful pair as a centerpiece fish in a small 10 gallon tank for my son. The male turned out to be a murdering psychopath and wiped out half of the smaller fish before I was able to get him out🤢
I had a similar experience with a female pearl gourami. Had her for years, suddenly she became a psycho.
I think that gouramis, like their cousins, the bettas have their own unique personalitys. So there is always a possibility of getting one that is very unlike the others🙂

Nice video… however, I’d like to point out that these are Trichogaster labiosa, orange morph… not honey gouramis (Trichogaster chuna). The supply chain decided years back to call this strain ‘red honey gourami’ in order to creat a more sellable product. Now so many people are confused. To reiterate, labiosa has a ‘red’ aquarium strain and chuna has a yellow aquarium strain (called gold honey). The fish in this video really should be called sunset thick lip gouramis to avoid confusion with the smaller-growing species that held the name ‘honey’ first (dating back to the 1960’s.

My rescued opaline survived overfeeding, lots of stress (no plants, small tank) and dish washing soap in the water, maybe a cold tank cause it was never heated and next to window. While all other fish in the tank died (goldfish and tetras I believe). She stayed small because of the previous tank and now have her in a 32 gallon tank with 4 honeys, 4 khulii and 2 of originally 5 japonica shrimps. All of a sudden she looks huge compared to he honeys. They get along really well, I believe I have found the perfect companions.
