    That turned out great even after the trouble you had cutting the back off. I found that not gluing on the back until you have the drawer cut out first. I just double sided tape on the back while cutting the outside shape then remove it for the drawer cutting.

    Great video john👍 thanks for showing the mistakes since they're vital to the learning process. Like they say "the sign of a good woodworker is how well they can build, but how well they can hide their mistakes". Loving the content, keep doing what your doing.

    John, some mistakes give projects character and show the human side. Projects done by factory machines just don't have that character. Enjoyed this video very much! Bill Larrabee, Pulaski, N. Y.

    Thanks mate, good video. It's kinda nice to know that you pros don't always get it right. ;-)
    I made my first bandsaw box the other day for the missus on Valentine's Day, it was merbau front and back with pine core. I don't think I'll do pine again, so have clamped up some plywood and will clamp something like oak on the front and back for the next one.
    I've seen some others who don't bother clamping the back on until after the front and drawer are cut out, which is interesting as it means you don't need to resaw the back off, saving you a step...

    First time iv ever commented on TH-cam vid but was very impressed by ur mistakes in my opinion making mistakes is great not learning from them is when they become a problem but where u did make them u clearly quickly learnt from them and allowed us the viewer to learn aswell before making them ourselves as someone who is self taught and learns mostly from mistakes it’s good to watch and learn from someone else’s mistakes

    Lovely video John, introducing great techniques. Bandsaws are fantastic machines, but I share your frustration when they don't perform as expected. In respect of cutting the internal shape, I would perhaps consider leaving it in two halves and cutting with a scroll saw, then gluing them together. But all's well that ends well as they say. The box was lovely.

  • @frankslittleworkshop
    @frankslittleworkshop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Now that's a lovely thing 😁. Nice recovery by the way, well done👍. I'm in the process of a very simular recovery (also caused by my bandsaw drifting). But I have 300 tiny little blocks of wood to re-cut before I even get to the glue up 🙁. I'm sure it will be fine 😁. Hope the knee is fixing itself well. Thanks for the video , stay safe 😁👍.

    Beautiful work. It looks like the grain running from the bottom right corner would ha e also worked and then any imperfections from the glue up would have been on the bottom and it takes some of the lateral play out of the drawer. Good job as always.

      This morning I was attempting to resaw some walnut to glue up for a blank. I had the same problem with a 3/4 inch blade. Checked all my settings tried again same problem. Switched to a new 1/2 inch blade it cut perfectly. It took some time all morning but what hell I'm retired. Anyway I liked the vid and the way you solved your problem.

    Nice box! It occurs to me that a lot of woodworking is not “how to make” but “how to fix the oops!” That was a great save. My bandsaw pulls away from the fence too. Even with a brand new blade. In my case, I think a lot of the problem is I stored the band saw with tension on the spring for about 9 months. I have a new spring to install. I’ll let you know how that goes! As always, thanks for a great video!

    always enjoy the honesty you show when tackling these things - very refreshing to see and takes away that bit of apprehension that a hobbyist like myself would feel when trying to take on similar jobs. Must admit, though, I'm not really 100% sure what this box is for - while you were making it I assumed it was something to store a rolled up bandsaw blade in but it looks too small for that, so I'm guessing the name "bandsaw box" is just describing the technique rather than the purpose. I bet you could get a couple of nice guitar tops out of that spalted maple if you jointed them. Hope the knee gets better soon!

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed

    Greetings John from Canada! I watched this video first and then I just watched your video, regarding the initial setup of this new band saw. In that video you mention two schools of thought as to where the blade should track on the pulleys. Seeing that I was wondering if you have tried setting the thinner blades towards the back of the gullet so that the tension is more on the teeth? Maybe that might help the thinner blades cut more squarely?

    hello, today I drew a box, similar to yours!. My saw has a maximum height of 80 mm, when designing, I thought, to make the inner branches smaller, I will use a 20 mm diameter fostner drill. when cutting the bottom, it is necessary that the guide has to be the same height as the box, these guides lower, the saw starts to cut with one measure and another comes out.

    come in from the bottom if you can, cant see the exterior line if its underneath.
    i would have come in just inside the leg on the bottom right and gone straight into the curve so you dont have to end the cut on a curve just nice and simple straight cut across the bottom untill you get back to the line and youre done.
