Trae Young is having arguably his best season ever but was not selected as an All-Star this season. He might still make it as an injury replacement but this is a look at why he’s been blackballed from the NBA’s biggest event.

Hey Casey good video. As someone that lives in Atlanta and has followed all of this since day 1… the Lloyd Pierce and Trae drama was really on Lloyd. He wasn’t good with the media here and even though he took the job knowing that he was basically a developmental coach, when Trae wanted to start winning, he wasn’t in lock-step with that or the front office that agreed with Trae. So that’s why he was fired in year 3.
However, the biggest rumor that came out of all the front office drama between then GM Travis Schlenk and ownership last season, was that Travis didn’t want to draft Trae AT ALL. But ownership felt that Trae needed to be the pick because he could be sold to the city over someone else. Ownership I think was right of course, but it’s impossible to know if Luka could’ve been marketed to similar success? Travis walking away due to the Murray trade was icing on the cake to the overruling prior. The Hawks are just dysfunctional.

    • @kineahora8736

@@trenolley5265 considering Tony Ressler made his son, Nick Ressler a very key player in making basketball decisions, I find the rumor to be pretty valid. I think Tony is very much on his own side in terms of making whatever money he can and not spending it. So if the team continues to be bad, he has no more reason to keep Trae & his max contract. He’s been about shedding salary and not paying the tax since the 1st time it became a possibility. He will publicly say that he’s about winning and blah, blah, blah but when you look at what’s happened with the team it’s largely lip service. I understand that they traded for Murray, however they could afford to do so knowing that they were trading John Collins no matter what. The move appeared to be a “win now” move but in reality was simply a lateral move talent wise. I try to judge base on word, but I watch actions and believe those more than what’s said.

Atlanta is the most disrespected team in the league, and it's been that way for decades. The media 'hate' on Trae is ridiculous, and seems entirely focused on getting him out of Atlanta, at which point I'm 100% sure media will turn around and start loving him. Have these people watched Atlanta games? Trae can become a pretty damn good defender in the last minutes of games (check out all the charges he's able to take to win games, or look at how he bodied up Giannis in the paint a couple years ago in the Playoffs). And if LP or Nate were such great HCs why have they not gotten HC positions since getting fired?

I think practically all the elite passers are underrated a lot more than they should be. Trae was certainly snubbed, but even in the west, being a diehard Nuggets fan, there is no reason that the 5th seed Kings don't have an all-star selection. Sabonis is averaging 20-13-8 on 61%fg, and KAT is averaging 22-8-3 on 52%fg. And before I hear "winning matters", Lakers (9th seed) have 2 all-stars, and Warriors (12th seed) have a star too. It took Jokic finally winning FMVP for people to go, "hmm, maybe this dude's passing is more impactful than we think", but that hasn't permeated the league nearly as deep as it should. This year has been the most prominent example of favoritism over skill for the all-star game

Trae is not a passer. He is a statpadder just like Wesbrook and Harden were with their assists. Players love to play with an actual passers. People loved to play alongside Kidd, Nash, and now they love to play alongside Jokic, Sabonis and Haliburton, even Holiday (passing is not just just assists it's unselfishness too) Meanwhile Trae's teammates talk about him the same way Allen Iverson teammates talked about him.

Young is one of the most underrated players in todays game. He is a terrible defender, but an incredibly gifted in offense, and the hole that he is creating can be disguised with competent planning. I don't think there is a huge gap between trae and dame, but perception. Both are terrible defenders and great at offense. Dame is probably a bit better defender, and a better shooger, but I think that trae has higher IQ plays, and a better passer so it pretty much evens out.

a fair question to ask is: who should he replace? I used to be a trae fan, but the last 2-3 years have changed my opinion on him. Fans think he should have been allstar by looking at his box stats, while simultaneously entirely neglecting his advances stats or his game tape. For me to considering him an allstar/all nba player he needs to improve on a lot of thing: Reduce his turnovers, improve his shot selection, improve his efficiency, be less ball dominant and increase his offball movement without the basketball, at least try on defense. Another thing is that, while his assist numbers are high and he is an excellent passer, most off his assist are lobs to capela., which teams have been able to shut down in the post season. His efficiency , specifically in the postseason is down right horrendous. all this and i haven't even mentioned his horrendous defense

In fact, this the 2nd time in history that a player with his stats missed the game. As a Hawks fan let me give you context--our team is poorly constructed. I've only watched about 5 or 6 Hawks games this year, agree they are poorly constructed but how much of that is Trae's fault? He ran off a lot of good players. Also, disagree they would be worse without him. D & ball movement improves immediately, and he's a culture killer. Definite Ewing Theory Candidate.

@@JarboBombay I don't know what good players he ran off. Our young, unexpeeienced front office is responsible for this mess. John Collins did not live up to his contract so he was traded. As far as defense, it's fair ti say that in the past Trae's effort on the defensive end was lacking. But thst hss changed this year. He is #7 in steals and he locked down Paolo Bsnchero this year. Paolo details this account on JJ Reddick's podcast in which both Paolo and JJ remark about Trae Young's improved D.
The bsll does move more when Trae is out and Murray runs point. But Trae is an elite passer and is always top 3 in assists getting his other teammates involved (Jalen Johnson is eating right now bevause of Trae's playmaking). The team finally got behind him and took on his fearless edge and it let to an Eastern Conference Finals appearance that slipped away the moment he slipped on the refs good. I think it has something to do with his size because Trae’s usage rating is on par with other players of his caliber, it’s just he’s a smaller guy with a high pitched voice. I the hawks are at their best when 11 has it going. The issue comes when his teammates aren’t willing to play their roles. The one time they did, the result speaks tor its self.
