Young Girl in Portland Homeless Since Her Foster Mom Kicked Her Out at 13

  • I met Hype in Portland, Oregon. She is 19 and has lived on the streets for 5 years. She was 13 when her foster mom kicked her out. Although this may shock you it is very common. 40% of homeless youth are never ever even reported missing.
    The night before Hype slept under a bridge.
    I cannot help but feel her sadness.

    About Invisible People:
    Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as TH-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
    Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
    Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

    Isn't it illegal to kick a child out onto the streets? Shouldn't the foster "mom" face criminal charges?

    • @christinamarsh5388
      @christinamarsh5388 6 ปีที่แล้ว +774

      Yes, it is illegal. Since some foster youth are considered high risk for running, it would not be surprising if her foster parent reported her as a runaway. This young lady would be on a missing child registry and that might be why she is seeking to leave the city.

    I think when a person is homeless, living on the streets , living day to day, their perception of the world and main stream society is greatly different than a person with a job and a car and a house and money to spend. I have been " homeless" before a time or two, ( although nothing like this girl) and I had time to just sit and watch. People became ants. Always moving. Always seemingly just "going through the motions". I think this way of life we have can start to seem futile when you have a different prespective on it, and it is hard to imagine yourself, cut off from the pack, to ever beable to " fit in" . I wondered, do I want that? Is that what it takes to create food, shelter, security, and community. Life is tough sometimes and it dosnt always favor people and to some it dosnt always make sence.

    There seem to be a lot of men, possible predators, in these comment sections who think just because these young ladies are homeless that they are so desperate they will date, marry, or move in with some strange guy commenting on how attractive they are. Honestly it's pretty pathetic that people try to say how well off they are in hopes to lure a women toward them. If you are truly trying to help people like them then donate time, money and resources to helping people in your community and maybe you can befriend a young woman and change her life that way, but trying to pick up homeless chicks on the internet and trying to woo them into liking you because of your money is creepy.

And theres plentyof idiots with fat wallets that would be happy to accomodate. Love isnt real anymore. Look atthe divorce rate. They need to know the social services or processes in place that can give them a START. Once you lead them to this information it is up to them to continue on that path. I hope he is not just getting their story (probably paying them) and then leaving them to it. Be responsible since you are interviewing them. When I got back in the car my mom asked me why...my big red flag to leave home even sooner and stay away is that my own parents tried to put me in a group home. To put it simply, because I was depressed and wouldn’t do chores around the house. I later walked out of my house and tried to stay out for as long as I could. I had to go back because of an ankle injury I needed to heal from and find true stability for. I should’ve never went back. It ended in more arguments and fighting, few happy times, and ultimately the police being called. Never again. It broke me and hurt my heart and soul. Even more.

      No, I don't buy that at all. In California there was Gabriel who was in elementary school ended up being beat to death by mother's boyfriend. CPS dropped the ball there countless times. In Arizona there was baby Brianna who died of injuries of abuse. Kids fall through the cracks with CPS. I myself have been homeless and know way too many incidents that kids go through and there are no repercussions. I believe her 100%.

      The problem with CSD is that it is understaffed. At that time, the Oregon version was staffed at 70% of its proper level due to finances. Add to that the usual human mistakes, the usual high turnover in staffing, & it might have been that the authorities didn't notice she was missing for a few months -- at which point with the resources available they couldn't find her.
      The problem with any foster system is that there is never enough money to do a proper job, & too many people interested in exploiting what money there is. Having adopted 2 children who could have easily ended up like her, I am angry about it all -- but have no good solution for fixing this mess.

    She reminds me of EJ.
    * Avoiding eye contact
    * Keeping a friendly but indifferent and unthreatening expression on her face at all times
    * only having one wish and not being able to come up with more.
    I hope she got out of her situation as well.

    I told my kids , if ever we fell out and we couldn’t live in same house , I would sleep in the garage in small tent and sleeping bag , rather have them go on the street , Or even my shed . I just couldn’t do that to my kids All I would need to do is use the facilities when they were not around to survive , a kettle and a microwave and a light and a bucket if needed .
    They come first

      Brent Spiner I understand why the military would have moved on to these types of tests. I only took the ASVAB to get in the Air Force in the late 80’s. From what I’ve found the army has a TAPAS test to evaluate personality etc. What other branches have psychological tests ?

      Dirty Dan man I hear ya. For instances like the girl in this video I’m all for streamlining our welfare system, get rid of the nonsense programs and having a place for them to learn a trade and get on their feet.
      Cities on the west coast are more interested in giving them fish rather than fishing poles.
      I’ve been in Seattle forever and what it’s become is a disaster. Mobile injection sites, methadone clinics, homeless czars. Pissing money away while the problem gets worse.
