Walking down Hollywood Blvd, I stopped to talk to a new homeless friend I had met a week before. While we were talking, I noticed a young woman on the sidewalk doing what looked like school work. Sure enough, Amber had a physics textbook out and was doing her homework right there on the streets while flying a sign.
Amber is homeless and putting herself through Los Angeles City College on just GR (general relief) income, which is $220 a month in California. Amber says one of the biggest challenges is finding an abandoned building at night to sleep in so she can get up early to make her morning classes.
I can't imagine the courage and strength it must take to go to school and be around other young adults while not having a place to sleep or shower. Amber wants to go into the forensic science field, but I have a feeling this strong young woman can do anything she puts her mind to. I just hope and pray the streets don't distract her from her dreams.

@@Rollimggiant Theres nothing wrong with having a bad habit. Everyone has one, maybe not as bad as that but people DO have them. I don't give a fig what you have to say, especially when this woman is clearly doing something good by putting herself through college which is more than I can say for alot of others who have the resources to do so and still take education for granted. Have you been homeless before? Out on the streets in the freezing cold? Have you been rejected everywhere you turn simply because they have an attitude like yours and thinks them delusional? Have you ever wondered where your next meal is coming from? Don't judge these people too harshly. They do the drugs because it keeps them warm at night and comforts them when nothing else does. I'm not supporting it but I ain't quick to judge either. My mother was homeless for two years, she also put herself through studies and made something of herself. That to me is inspiring. If my mother could do it, why cant this woman. People have to survive in this world, because it's the strongest that survive and sadly it's TRUE. But when people have an attitude like yours people are blinded to the hows and whys and let me tell you, not all of them deserve it. So maybe look at this from another point of view instead of from at home or wherever you are that's most likely more comfortable than where these people are.

@@unknown-vq1gj I think it's different for everyone. Alot of people go into college head first and when they actually study a subject they thought they wanted to get into, they change their minds. OR when people finish their degrees and can't get a job in that field or aren't as enthusiastic as they were before they begun. That's when college becomes worthless to some. BUT college itself is not worthless.
I will never ever be jealous of my classmates again. I have a bed and food and a shower. I don't care if I can't buy a burger meal or go to the cinema with my friends or allow myself a coffee with my classmates. I don't care. This girl is studying in the streets, strong and optimistic. Creative af. I admire her. She'll be on my mind forever.

@@georgetak4674 You should move to Minnesota. The winters that can kill you here if you sleep put on the street without proper clothing are really good motivation to not be homeless. I speak from experience. I found I was able to turn my life around without even needing a single donation because I realized I didn't want to die from freezing to death. Best of luck man.

Considering you have access to the internet...I would suggest that you make a video on your TH-cam channel, Facebook, Instagram even Tiktok and prove that the gofundme is real like stating your name and saying the full website link in the video... and of course sharing your story.
I'm glad you can appreciate that, but the feelings brigade will tear you apart for saying that because "no one has it worse than anyone else", "your troubles are just as valid as anyone else's", "it's not a competition", and so on.
My own life's been so terrible and tragic that the only way I'm able to feel ok, is to know I could be a lot worse off. I have it pretty bad but don't feel sorry for myself because I know there's others worse off (as I've been many times) yet I get verbally abused if I say that.

I was homeless in NYC for an entire semester+ of college. I kept my stuff in lockers, stayed up all night walking, staying in bars and diners, went into school as soon as it opened and slept in the library or common study rooms before class and got my degree. I hope it worked out better for her.

This is what it's like in Europe and a lot of places around the world, and teachers (K- gr12) there are actually paid significantly more than they are in the US, and I believe professors are paid around the same as they are in the US. You don't tap your credit card when firefighters extinguish your housefire, their salaries come from taxes. The US education system is just completely broken

Please I don't want to be misinterpreted. But I wouldn't celebrate her place. Of course I find her attitude as something remarkable. But I can't "applaude" her, that would be just looking at the "romantic" side of her story.
She is high on meth, I can tell I used the shit myself. When you are high on that stuff you will sound like the smartest person in the room. it opens the mind but when you do it for days with no sleep you will become crazy and won't eat, take care of your teeth develop scabies on the skin from being dehydrated all the time. it is the worst drug but the most fun to use.

I found physics were the easiest course in my engineering course. Control theory without a solid foundation in complex analysis is much tougher. Then there are other things like circuit design for someone like me who only had access to computers but not an electronic workshop to deal with hardware, it was really tough. I really prefered the software side of things. BTW, nothing inspiring from a drug addicts talking bullshit when they are high.

I am studying dentistry and as a future dentist I would gladly help this strong magnificent woman.
How do you fix that..? She needs implants and they are super expensive. Dentures don't fix anything they just hide their embarrassment. I lost a front tooth in a fight and had a denture. It was horrible so I paid for an implant. Dentures feels like you have a sofa in your mouth...lol

I work in addiction services so I see a lot of homeless people. So many try and fail to change because society sucks. I hope she succeeds
I have a question for you... What is detox like? Im struggling very badly with an opioite addiction and I want help, but I keep it a secret because I don't want it on record or anyone knowing about it. But I think I need help. Do they keep you medicated in detox or is it something I can do at home on my own? I'm so scared of treatment because I don't know what to expect. Also, I do not want to come out hooked on methadone or subs. I tried to get clean on my own, but the withdrawl symptoms are intense and very painful. I don't know what to do. I'm to the point where it does not get me high anymore. It's turned more into a medication than a drug. But I'm so sick of living this way. Can I do it on my own? And if I do seek help...I want to know everything before I sign myself in so what can you tell me?
@@palestar828 it all depends on what country you're in, what you're usage is, most detox units will want to to medically reduce to a point before an inpatient stay....detox is not easy, I would recommend speaking to someone professional if you can or a charity that supports users

You people are SICK...Before you judge look at yourself in the mirror. You have no idea what this young lady has gone through so before your spit out your poison think first. How do you know that YOU may not be next? If you have never gone through a time when you don't know if you will have enough money to buy your next meal you don't know SHIT. Therefore STOP judging. I just wish a nice person can come forward to help this young lady and give her a chance. We all made mistakes at some point in our life and no one deserves to pay for those mistakes FOREVER.
Shits not true some kids get kicked out of their houses because of mental illness or because they cant afford to pay for them. Your family can die and be left with nothing so many things can leave you in this situation.

And these 'interviews' do not ask that very important and fundamental story. This is because most of the stories are the same. Which is:
1 I met the wrong people and starting doing what they did
2 they did drugs and so I did
3 I had to do things to get drugs, desperately
4 I stole from my family and friends and lied to them (surprise drug addicts lie?)
5 because I am a thief and liar, I could not be trusted so my family and friends disowned me (to protect themselves)
6 I committed crimes and became homeless
7 I'm telling you a story but it's not the whole truth
The real problem is the upbringing. The second is the drug use. Watching these, you can see the halted mental growth drugs have caused. 20 year olds with the mentality of a 12 year old.
So should we blame this girl? No absolutely not. Blame the person that cooked the meth for her and injected it or smoke it. Oh, it was her? Well my point still stands. No one kid napped her and forced her to use drugs. People use drugs to escape reality. They live in metal pain, they think (wait until they visit hell), and take in their short sighted, child like view, the easy way out.
Call them mislead or deceived that drugs would make them feel better. Like all bad things, it feels good at first but quickly changes. These people should be hospitalized for 6 months or 1 year or longer with no access to drugs. Until their mind can go back to normal, it if possible.
Then they need to be education on basics and if they are mentally competent, something useful to society so that they c

Given their 3 wishes, what they say is a good indicator of their mental age, and what they really want. Few say home, job, and clean from drugs. ALL of them should have these three wishes.
Blame the person injecting the drugs. If you don't understand, find some more videos specifically on drug addition, including alcoholism. You will see. All think the same, drug seeking behavior. And ultimately care little of anything or anyone else than their next fox.
These people have developed severe mental disorders, and need long term medical treatment.

@erin senecal Because I find it very unlikely that she had these famous quotes. I'm sure she progressed past calling water "wawa", but it's common in our world and in history to take a sympathetic face to sell your ideology.
Plus if there's only 412 quotes that people remembered her saying, I'd imagine that some would be less articulate. It definitely looks like someone wanted their voice to be heard and used her as a poster woman.

The truth is ppl have no idea how EASY it is to become homeless. 2 weeks without a paycheck due to being sick,car wreck,etc u are screwed how you gonna pay rent? Electricity,water,food etc. Especially if your living pay check to pay check. Its so hard to get help sometimes especially if u dont know how to work the system. Some ppl just use the churches etc and it makes it harder on the ones who actually need it. Able bodied ppl who are just lazy living off of others. This girl here is actually wanting a life and whoever that person who commented on her teeth? Im sure she hates it im sure if she could shed get her some new pearlies and i hope she gets thru school and gets that profession shes working for. God bless this young girl.

Living paycheck to paycheck is often a choice--we all know people who make ~$40k per year and people who make ~$100k+ a year and they both choose to live paycheck to paycheck by living beyond their means. Money is often not the problem; it's the reckless, inefficient use of said money. Put a budget together, get your shit together, and then enjoy not living paycheck to paycheck. Where can you cut back? Do you really need a $15k car or will a $6k car be good enough to get around? Do you go out to eat a lot? Too many Amazon orders? Can you get cheaper rent? I live in a relatively low cost of living California city and I was able to make all my payments making $45k a year, living alone, with a mortgage, and still paying into my 401k and saving $500-$1,000 per month just in case of an emergency. I just bought a house within a reasonable price range, I did my budget and I cut back all the bullshit. It's not rocket surgery. For all those proclaiming Chad Davis a hero, how many of you have done your budget within the last year and made necessary cutbacks?

She's educating herself so she can get a better chance at finding a job, not to be a better member of society, why would you go to college in the first place? You can learn all that stuff by reading books. I saw a documentary about this guy who had been living in the streets for decades and he had a massive collection of books and he read all of them! So the only reason she's going to college is to get a degree so she can have a better chance at finding a job, that's all.

You all assume I did drugs no I over brushed at 17 it destroyed the enamel off my teeth over time. I never touched drugs in my life, first of all I get GR every month, my courses only cost me 160 dollars for all four units every semester, thirdly I am also trying to get my GED because I don't get grants or student loans, LACC Los Angeles City college, look it up, is where I go to school! I can take credited courses without a GED but it comes out of pocket, they also provide GED courses. One day someone is gonna judge you judge me not for you know me not.

I feel badly that she's lost her teeth, which is very common for drug addicts, and she's definitely got the whole 'vibe' going (notice the arm moving like a tic?), but all that being said I feel as you do. She's a human being and when asked about 3 wishes she didn't hesitate to put others first, so her heart is good as well. I'm shocked at how many ppl aren't aware this is a thing. Lots of kids run thru college for years while being homeless and having to pull it all off alone
No doubt back when I was in college it was hard enough then and i had a bed and a home and a shower, this girl tough and she knows what she wants she'll make it, I just can't imagine how difficult it must be for her.
