That Kadabra thing being a parody of Metamorphosis and being fiction in-universe actually makes it a lot clearer. I've always thought that Dex entry was weird and out of place. I never made the link to Metamorphosis before.
Also interesting that both the Jigglypuff and Clefairy lines ended up in the "Enigma" category and then ended up becoming Fairy types later. I always thought that the only reason Chansey didn't become a Fairy type while the Jigglypuff and Clefairy lines did was because a Fairy type Chansey would be absolutely busted competitively, but it seems like Jigglypuff and Clefairy were always considered more mysterious than Chansey in a way that makes them more suited to be fairies, even from the beginning.

@@angolin9352 studying which pokemon learned which TMs in gen 1 gives some odd insights into the thought process of the game design.
Like: the Raticate 'dex talks about it having a connection to water... and it gets water moves via TM. It's never been a water type or gained water moves by level up though.
It's like the designers have this notion of pokemon with a partial type... IE it's not as simple as having an officially listed type. What a pokemon learns might not be the same as it's physical type.
..... yes Raticate was one of my favorites in Gen 1. I once annoyed the crap out of someone by demonstrating what they can do in PvP. :p Super Fang was a pretty... interesting skill. Guaranteed 50% damage if it hits? yikes! The catch being Super Fang can't KO anything ever. It amused me that the guy I fought with Raticate didn't actually realize Superfang and Hyperfang were different moves when I hit him with both of them.

Now it is all sanitized and every interaction between different Pokémon or Pokémon and humans revolves around friendship and cooperation. Which is fine…it’s for kids, but I would totally watch an anime themed in the aesthetic of early Pokémon, where wars happen and Pokémon, being powerful elemental themed monsters, sometimes kill people.

When I was a kid, my brother told me a story behind the tale of Jynx: There was a little girl that lived in a cold regions with mountains who witnessed an Articuno fly by. No one believed her and called her crazy. Driven by bullying, and the disbelief, she climbed to the mountain cave where she had seen an Articuno fly into, and was so enamored to actually find it, she didn't realize she startled the Articuno, who froze her in it's surprise. Due to Articuno's power infused with the ice, instead of dying, in the ice she transformed into a pokemon, Jynx.
Although it isn't canon, it's kinda cool it did match up with the articuno's dex about freezing people into place who are enamored by the sight of it.
