Idk why I’m talking like this,
The Gold & Silver Beta leak felt like a missing piece of a puzzle I never knew I wanted solved. Suddenly, so many things made sense. Remoraid randomly evolving into Octillery? Umbreon's Gold dex entry talking about random poison when it was Dark-type? Girafarig's palindromic name, but its design not reflecting it? Scyther having an evolution, but where was Pinsir's? What was up with the "Shellder" latched onto Slowbro/Slowking?
Seeing all this cut content, it felt like we peered into some alternate universe. How strangely magical and bizarre. I hope some of these get a shot at reappearing one day... particularly Meowth's pre-evolution. Thing's adorable.
Remoraid and Octillery are still both based on weaponry, it's just not as evident.
Exactly! I love early Gamefreak designs, their just so bizarre and lovable. Something about the Gameboy's (color) sprite work that just makes the imagination go wild. Like there's just enough there to get the picture, but not enough to know for sure.
How does Girafarig's name not reflect the design? Girafarig is two giraffes combined and the name is also basically "giraffe" combined twice
@@BIZaGoten The art used in the video is of the beta design. Girafarig's rear half in the final design looks more like a real giraffe and just has a small round toothy head on its tail.

Gen 1 where psychic types were only weak to bug, no STAB dragon or ghost moves, special stat was for both special attack and special defense, critical hits were based on speed, leech seed and toxic combined did more damage, normal types couldn’t be paralyzed by body slam, focus energy lowered critical hit ratio, when hyper beam knocks out a Pokemon it doesn’t need recharging, waking up from sleep took a full turn, wrap combined with agility, multi hit moves that were critical on the first hit had all hits be critical, couldn’t thaw out of being frozen unless hit with a fire move.

Most of those issues were bugs. obviously yeah there was a few issues in balance beyond that but bugs can't really be accounted for immediately even with the best laid plans and when they require some rather extensive set up it's not going to be caught.
Gen 1 didn't exist when a patch could just be pushed out online it would require a massive recall of all the carts and even then it would not be all of them.
That or you're need to push an event that also patched the game... good luck in gen 1 where pokemon isn't worth the across the country/world trip
And it's not even like Raichu was packing huge stats to begin with.
@@wherethetatosat Raichu's stats have very little to do with whatever they were planning for Gorochu's perhaps goro was on par with mewtwo or something and perhaps by the time what you claim as "to begin with" which is actually the end they eliminated Goro and nerfed Raichu for the same, probably misconceived reason. you'd have to see Goro's stats and Beta Raichu to know.
According to Ken Sugimori, the balance issue was actually about having too many 3 stage Pokemon -- so they cut about half a dozen 3 stage families down to 2 stages, including the Pikachu, Psyduck, Meowth, Ponyta, Cubone, and Goldeen families.
Seriously? Normal types never missed a turn when paralyzed?
Well, thanks to people like Satoru Iwata, these bugs were fixed and Pokemon gen 2 to gen 5 were a hit. After his unfortunate passing, I definitely noticed changes for the worst since gen 6.
If they had kept that one Pokémon, then Slowpoke's evolution into Slowbro would make a lot more sense.
But aside from that, imagine living in a timeline where all these cut Pokémon were actually in the final games.
Guess we can only hope that they'll reappear officially someday.
So many of them are good looking but then you have ones like gen 2 Mime Jr. and....yeesh.
I'm really curious what a Ditto evolution would do. This was before Imposter so would it just be faster and/or bulkier to make it easier to get Transform off or would it turn into a full fledged fighter?

Shiro-Luna in my own head canon I like to think that all beta and cut Pokémon still exist in the canon Pokémon world as undiscovered/sub species of the Pokémon we have now.
I honestly think most of them look great, and personally, I prefer them over many of the newer Pokemon as well as a good few of the earlier ones as well.

And Jumpluff. I think this is a case of getting cut for being too... boring.
Some ideas just... needed work for being incomplete. Like that sunfish>shark>deep water fish line.... that doesn't make sense as an evolutionary lineage. But it seemingly got split into 3 different evolutionary lines and reused.
This explains why Wartortle feels off from the rest of the chain.

So many of those Gen 2 Pokemon look great. That Pinsir evolution, the Meowth pre evolution (not that it needed one), that anchor shark, that voodoo doll, that electric tiger, etc. So many good designs that will probably never make it to the mainline games.
Gamefreak should make those Pokemon real
Not giving Meowth's line Konya broke the Tom and Jerry esque relationship the species has with Pikachu
What Game Freak could have done is bring back some of those alternate designs as regional/alternate forms in later games. Imagine a Psychic/Dark Girafarig variant with the fully mirrored body or a Shellder/Cloyster line that looks more like Slowbro/Slowking's shell since, canonically, it's a Shellder that merged with it.
At least as a regional variant!
Gyaoon reminds me of Rhydon. It's funny that you mention its name being based on the screech of Godzilla, because the sound the legendary birds make in the earlier games was "Gyaoo!"

@@ae_sko88 Yeah, I think Gyaoon was simply an incomplete design idea. It probably got reworked into Rhydon. In Gen 1 each Pokemon has an index number in the game data that has no relation to their Pokedex number. Some people have speculated that this is in part due to the order in which they were programmed into the game. Rhydon's game index number is 001. Which would seemingly make it the first one ever....
pausing at 2:25: these designs are much like what was later used for Ledian and Politoed(including the crown!).
Using old concept art as new Pokemon might be a great Official or Fan Game.
Nintendo would cease and desist a fan made game with this stuff immediately, if it was too obvious. I think you could probably get away with making something new with inspiration, but unfortunately Nintendo is VERY strict about their stuff being used. :(

A lot of them DID get reused in some form later. And many were just different sprites for a pokemon that did get made. But... there are a few exceptions.
Ditto's weak stats are the only reason it's a joke pokemon. The evo getting better stats would be a great improvement.

Idk if you've ever seen a goblin shark, but they don't have a head shape like that. Their ampullae of Lorenzi are in the little saw thing, as opposed to a hammerhead, which have the distinctive head shape that serves a similar function.
I know about sharks the Goblin has a snout or "plank" which is straight, Hammerheads have a "plank" where its eyes are at each side, which gives it 360 degree vision, and it allows it to eat stingrays with no problem

Definitely more fitting than just getting a mini-Chain Chomp on its tail. They should revisit that design, maybe as an evolution for Girafarig.

It looks like it’s inhabiting the mushroom which is great foreshadowing for what the mushroom ends up doing to its later evolution.
I love the design for Para because it goes:
Para > the insect is dominant
Paras > the insect and the mushroom are equal
Parasect > the mushrooms are dominant

I remember when the Gold beta was leaked. I couldn't believe that it was real. It's amazing to think that we live on an era where it was possible. I liked the darker tone that was in the beta, with those weapon Pokemon, the zombie panda, the real Girafarig and etc. It seems the story was going to be a little darker too, with that Hiroshima-like city.
With these leaks and the Starcraft Ghost leak from last year, it's been a wild ride.
Gen 1 was darker than the rest of the gens. It wasn't necessarily marketed as a kid's game initially, it's why gen 1 has a different "feel" than the rest. Hell even in the japanese version of the games the old man in Viridian City is passed out drunk. Nothing to do with coffee.
Yeah and a hiker in the first cave mentions being high on magic mushrooms from Gen 1 haha
even the stuf fin Gen 2 that did get kept was kinda O-o' Cinnabar being mostly destroyed by a Volcano?

Huh. Gyaoon not only is similar to Rhydon's cry whenever it's in text, but it's also the sprite used for the Gym Statues and Pokemon of Rhydon's design in the old games.
It looks like Poliwrath's older version was the inspiration for Politoed, as it appears to be wearing a crown.

Looks more like Serendipity to me. Plesiosaurs aren't dinosaurs by the way, they're reptiles. The seal starter is more dragon-like if anything.

Considering fossils are responsible for the whole Dragon myth, yeah. They do resemble dragons.
@@N8-PT Is based on the Loch Ness monster which is commonly described to resemble a plesiosaur. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Ice-typing is a reference to how cold the waters of the loch can be.
Besides, the ocean is diverse enough for more.

Some of those unused pokemon got reworked into new mons for later gens. Ikari and Grotesu more than likely got reworked into Sharpedo and Huntail. Manbou looks like it got reworked into Lanturn within the same generation. The voodoo doll also got reworked and eventually turned into Banette (Banettes pokedex entry says it's an abandoned doll). Rinrin and Berunrun had some of their elements go into the Glameow line and Purloin lines. Even those electric tigers probably turned into the Shinx evo line

Man, you can really see the changes in design philosophy from old gen Pokemon ideas and the modern ones.
Love them or hate them, you can't deny that the newer pokemon have a very different artistic style compared to the franchise roots.

The Cubone/Kangaskhan theory does somewhat make sense. Gen 7 during SOS Battles, a Kangaskhan can appear when Cubone calls for help

The second stage grass starter from Gen 2 makes me think that there had to be a different starter before Chikorita. Like it was the first starter to get the redesign like the others did later. It looks more like a proto Flabébé then any evolution of Chikorita.

Why would they cut all these Pokémon when they literally made a ring of keys into a Pokémon?
You saw that one of them was just a balloon, right?
Yeah, but that fire bear, Raichu evolution, and goblin shark were great designs. A lot of these were actually. They scrapped animal like designs and never used these at some point, but keys, a ice cream cone, and a literal trash bag made it. I find it even odder these were tossed during gen 1-2, but Pokemon like Voltorb made it.

I noticed a lot of scrapped evolutions look incredibly similar to the previous form. Pokemon usually has gone with much more drastic changes between evolutions to help them stand out.

They've never given me a name. I've been around since Gen I and I still don't have a name.
I don't know about the assessment on Gyaoon. I think it probably split into the Nidos and Rhydon. If I remember correctly, there's an NPC Rhydon you can speak to that has Gyaoo as a cry.

It's like they wanted to cut out all of the good stuff. WTF
They aren't dogs, they are cats. Entei the lion, Raikou the sabertooth, and Suicune the leopard.
The baby forms would’ve been pretty cool, but also awesome watching these videos and seeing how a lot of these designs helped others down the road!
I hope that at least one person at Pokémon sees how much fans still love these designs and hopefully will one day implement all of these, they were so good.

Developers and reviewers have gotten in trouble for leaking content from the newer games before they were even released. Arresting them makes total sense.
As for stuff that's 20 years old, yeah, that would be weird. Him hacking the accounts anwsers the questions though.

It seems that way but I believe he was created in the early 2000’s while beta Porygon 2 was created in the 90’s.

No, they faced jail time because they straight up hacked their network to get it. If it was just a leak Nintendo would have simply issued a C&D takedown like they have in the past.
It's happened a good number of times. Like back in the 90s, someone leaked a fuckton of n64 files and stuff. dude allegedly got taken to court over it and because of that people panicked and deleted stuff. like half of the archive is left and it's highly illegal to own, and very difficult to obtain. This leak actually helped with n64 emulators, however because of that most of them are actually illegal because they use stolen code and the like.
