- Road Train Sydney to Perth - Is It the Batteries or the Starter Motor?
I had some problems starting the truck a few times. I try to diagnose the problem. In the end it was the starter motor.

Giday John.
Really enjoyed viewing your latest video.
Watching you changing gears when you were driving through Sydney.
My name is Angus and I'm am from NZ in the South Island and drive for a large transport company doing general freight through out NZ and I drive Kenworth K200 model 620 Cummins with a auto box
My Kenworth is a truck and trailer unit curtain side a 10 axle unit that's a 5 axle truck and a 5 axle pull trailer.
Probably not as common in Australia as they are in NZ.
My unit is permitted to 60 ton on our roads which is one of heaviest unit you can have.
Anyway I love your videos you put out on TH-cam and your channel is one best trucking channel on TH-cam at the moment John.
If you are interested I'll send some pictures of my unit through to you.
You want to come to NZ in winter as in the South Island at the moment the temperature gets down to -5 degrees Celsius in the mornings
Keep up good work mate
Regards Angus.
Thanks Angus. I'm at Southern Cross at the moment and it's 0 degrees.
How can I get hold of you directly 2:08
You can message me on my Facebook page
❤❤❤❤❤❤ Fabulous camera positions, I LOVE THIS. WOW and the truck noise and the gearchanges. Johnno you have outdone yourself.😮 Very, very proffessional camera work. AND a beautiful clean workhorse. Tez will be jealous. 😱 This is AWESOME.!! WELL DONE. 🎉👍😎🙏🤗 Your truck loves you Johnno. ❤
Thanks Brenda. I'm trying to out-do Ken and all his camera angles.
Thanks for another adventure Johnno
Appreciate you letting us come along for the drive ☕️👍
Awesome. Thanks
started driving HR 3 months ago around country nsw, and i love it!
although being 24, a lot of companies couldn't hire me for insurance reasons
Look for a company that you could drive a rigid around now but who also has B Doubles. Once you have your MC then they should know you enough to give you a go driving something bigger.
Found it funny, you mentioned Canada because you're freezing at +4 degrees...we just just finished a week of -35 with a windchill of -42 (below zero) at night. My truck seat feels like a block of wood and my tires have frozen flat spots. Good fun!...not! 😅
I enjoy your videos, thank you for taking the time to share.
*Canadian Hillbilly...on the side
Yes I hear you. In Australia this is pretty cold. It's just kind people in England saying it's a great wave and it's 29 degrees. That's what we call a beautiful day.
Watching you from Toronto 🍁
Hello from Toronto
Love your content. Always first class. Thank you for taking us on your journey. Safe travels.

These head shot camera angles are awesome. Love that engine!!
Thanks. I'm glad you like the new camera angles.
Learning lots - thanks
Awesome. Thanks
This is awesome! I don't know if I could get used to driving on the other side though! Haha
Maybe one day once you've got your new house and you're all set up.
I am old enough to remember having bought fuel at the old Nullarbor Road House back in 1967, when I rode a motorbike over to Perth ( with a pillion passenger!) memories.
Wow Craig. You'd have a real story to tell.
Im a fan, I have just subscribed. Your content is full of adventure and story telliing, I'm hooked.
Be safe and healthy.
Hooked. Very good. It's great to have you along.
You had a good run with the green lights
Yes. It happens sometimes.
you can always tell what kind of driver people are by just walking around a truck and peeking inside, experience and pride in their trucks equals best and the ones i respect the most, how about you? you ever see a truck you know you just might not get there alive in
,
Ha ha. Yes I've seen some trashed trucks.
Superb awesome video from u bro..in my language ...saya sangat puas dan seronok menonton video anda...you doing great..👍👍👍
Thanks very much and always great to have you along

Thanks heaps. Let me know if you pass me
Another great video 👍🏻
I recently got back into driving after 20 years off the road and I’m loving every minute of it. Both yourself and Ken inspired me to get back behind the wheel. Only doing local work around Adelaide at the moment but would like to do some interstate down the track. Thanks for the inspiration Johnno. Safe travels.
Big wave from the east coast Canada 🇨🇦 NB province here. New subscriber love the vlogs, grew up trucking but work as an electrician now.
Al
Awesome stuff Choppier. I just got off the phone from Ken in the Philippines. He's doing great over there. Glad to hear you're enjoying your job too.
Great video. Loved every minute
Awesome. Thanks for watching
Awesome. Thanks for watching
Been too long since I've seen Nullabor and Norseman. Thank you for sharing your trip, much appreciated.
Thanks Rae for coming along
I hope your company know they have real jewel of a driver in you , not many would have know how to fix things like you do , and in middle of the cold night , take care 😊
Thanks heaps for your kind words.
That was fantastic, footage and camera angles were awesome 👏 I have so much respect for what you do , but that insight just added further respect thanks so much for taking us along , safe travels 👍
Awesome. Thanks Darrell.
another trip down memory lane great video as always John thanks for sharing 🦘
Awesome. Thanks Kerry
Reagrdless how many times I do it I always have mental sigh of relief when the engine fires up after I've had a compulsory break usually in the middle of nowhere. Good content and camera work.
Thanks heaps. Yeah it's certainly a relief.
Great vid as always. Drone footage is 👌🏻Looking forward to the next one 👍🏻
Awesome. Thanks heaps
Amazing evolution on these videos, something new every time. Love the balance of the music and the engines and the voiceovers, new cameras are great too.

Thanks Leslie.
Top video Johnno,…loved it,… your getting good at this!!
I learn from the best.
Nice work, Johnno! I agree with a few others - great camera angles from the B trailer, top of the door mirrors, excellent! Really shows your great tyre & trailer placement going around corners, etc. Nice road craft. Keep the vids coming 🙂
Thanks Nick. Sure will
Another top video from a top bloke.
Thanks Standec
Love the shots going over the Murray at Paringa and into Renmark. Johnno you have done it again.
Thanks Graham. I think that was my favourite part too.
Great content my brother. As a driver who hauls doubles in Texas, it’s great seeing these kind of videos. Genuinely enjoy seeing your day to day challenges in your videos. Keep the rubber side down my brotha!
Thanks heaps. It's great to have you along from Texas
Hi John, another great video. Love the background music in this one
Awesome. Thanks Fitzy
Great video, really enjoyed that one, especially those drone shots of your truck while moving, that drone must have a great follow me function.👍
Thanks Robert. Yeah the drone is great. I'll have to use it more.
First time here….. superb video work, great variety of footage , brilliant music choices…..👍🇮🇲💪
Thanks Andy for your kind words. It's great to have you along.
Like the new camera angles outside the Rig Johno . Great video mate
Thanks Brett. I'm trying to get creative.
Enjoyed the ride along, always a treat to see the open road being a retired driver. Have a hard time getting my head around driving on opposite side of the road and opposite side of truck tho. Reckon you do it enough it's like drinking a cup of coffee right. Y'all have a good one now from Texas.
Thanks Tom. It's great to have you along from the wrong side of the road.
Great video. Thank you from the Netherlands.
Thanks heaps and great to have you along
If I see you in Western Sydney I’ll be sure to give you a wave, safe travels and thanks for bringing a bit of our beautiful country to my house.
Thanks Darren. Hopefully I'll see you
Nice video and commentary you have the best view of Australia from that cab Johnno and i share your music choice.
Tony
Thanks Tony. Yeah it's certainly a great lifestyle. It's just a pity the clouds were out most of the trip.
Another fantastic video , love the engine sound on your truck more musical than the radio ,wishing you safe travels
Thanks heaps. Yeah I'll add more engine sounds from now on.
@@RoadTrainAdventures Thanks , the multiple camera angles are another great touch when your driving
Great video, the head cam footage was awesome.
Oh I'm glad you liked the head cam. I thought it might move about too much.
G'day Jonno,,
Just found your channel ,great to come along for the ride .was a good mix of sights ,driving ,,routine , would be nice to see a little more about the truck ,
like trouble shooting ,maintenance ,loading unloading ,and even the outback sights n attractions.
Great vid .
Subbed up
Respect...!
Thanks Craig. Every episode is different
It just depends on what I see, what tone I go through places and so nothing is really planned.
The loading and unloading had become a real problem. Many places don't like cameras so that may not happen much anymore.
Hey. Brilliant, again! Some really nice video work, especially the drone footage. That engine sure sounds great, and a good driver, like yourself, should know the sound of the engine and the speed you are going to make the perfect gear change without using the clutch! I learned that many years ago with a B Series ERF, Gardner 180, David Brown box and Eaton two speed axle. Get that wrong and you're stuffed 😂. Also, can't beat a well sheeted load 😉 Anyway, looking forward to the next one, happy motoring!
Thanks Bob. Great to have you along.
another great vid thanks mate
🚛🚚
Thanks heaps
Really enjoy your longer videos and mini tutorials. Your camera angles and editing are getting better and better. I would really like to see your full hookup procedure from start to finish on a road train from dropping your original trailer to hooking it back up and how you connects the brakes and electrical and check everything. Safe trucking 😊.
Yes one day I'll get around to making that. It's hard because I'm often in a place where I can't be in the way of other trucks for long.
Good to watch with your nice easy manner.
Thanks Mark
Thank you mate, that was bloody lovely.
Enjoyed the show.
I learnt abit about isolating the crook battery.
I like the bit where you say treat the load as if they were passengers, give em a good ride
Awesome. Great to be of help.
Good video. Loved it
Awesome thanks
good travelling along with u again johno learned a thing or 2 about batteries
Thanks Jordan. It's great to have you along.
Ahhh - Good old St Mary's. Lived most of my life there. I see the traffic on Mamre Rd hasn't changed. Good to see it again. Now live just NW of Coffs.
Awesome. Glad to give you some good memories.
Passion at work from aceh (indonesia)
Very good
Thank God! A commercial driver that still knows how to shift a manual gear box! Good on you driver! Todd Konoske the retired trucker.
Yeah I hate auto gearbox. Give me a stick any day.
Well done great camera angles and drone shots
Thanks Corey
I like how you got your camera in a windshield out set now we can see everything and good explaining what's going on through the that video nice from U.A.S 🇺🇸
Thanks Jimmy
Is great to have you along.
Back on the road, juhu.
Yeah all is good now
Thanks for the ride. New subscriber from New Zealand.
Thanks for watching. It's great to have you along.
love the video mate keep up the great work
Thanks heaps
Did't have to worry about starters or batteries with the old E9V8 Mack, compressed air start, super reliable till your air tank runs out of air, but there's always a tyre to plug in to when that happens.
Jus sayin Jono 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Really though Jono a portable battery load tester is a better test proposition as a battery can show good voltage but crash under load.
Some of the cheaper import starters burn up armature windings fairly quickly as I've found out the hard way in the middle of nowhere in a 400 big cam Cummins Transtar, luckily a 79 series Cruiser pull started me in low range load and all on a flat roadstop luckily and that engine wasn't turned off for several hundred K.
All the best mate, drive safe Roscoe.
Yes Roscoe. I thought about getting one of those battery testers.
My question to you is if the air start was so good why aren't they still using them?
Kiwi here,my favourite program on tele is Outback trucker's,love watching all the guy's and girl's doing what they enjoy,we had Sludge driving over here for a while, absolutely love the dude, and of course all the other's as well, glad I've found ya, going to be an avid follower, Cheers,by the way the show you did with the price of coke chip's etc along your journey blew my mind, didn't realise how expensive things were
Thanks Morris. It's great to have you along.
It's very interesting watching these road trains! Although I know they have even longer ones in Australia. They are all interesting to watch. We have triples in the States, but not the same. We mainly have A-trains that aren't really trains, which I thought was cool to see up until I learned about B-trains, which appears to make much more sense, especially since I hate hitches. Now, I'm learning about AB-trains while watching this video, lol! I guess that's better than an A-train, I suppose! At least it doesn't have all hitches or whatever they may call it there!
It's really not hard to drop a trailer or unbitch.
@@RoadTrainAdventures Got ya
I'm a pom and really enjoy watching your adventures 😊
Awesome. Thanks Tax
Thanks for the song....... loved it.

Keep on making vlog sir.🙏
Yeah it's an awesome song
Geez I really enjoyed watching your travels, I’ll definitely look forward to your next one, good work there, it’s been a long time since I used to travel from Melbourne to Perth by road in which I used to do most Christmases as a young bloke to see family over there and one particular time back in the early 1970’s I was driving back to Melbourne around midnight in my XP Falcon Hardtop thinking how I wasn’t looking forward to the unmade stretch between Eucla and Ceduna when the engine died just a little out of Balladonia and to cut a long story short the cam chain broke and had to be towed back to Norseman by Baladonia’s old sidewacker V8 jail bar Ford tow truck which was an adventure in itself as I had to sit in the car being towed backwards as the truck only had a drivers seat! I remember it being an expensive exercise but fond memories nonetheless! I always reckon it was Murphy’s law travelling the Nullarbor back then because if something was going to go wrong it was always when you were out in “ shitters ditch” 👍
Very good story. It probably would have been more comfortable in the back seat of the car than in the tow truck
Thanks for that trip, hope you get a Battery Replacement soon.😊
Thanks Rick. It turns out it was the starter motor which I've now replaced.
@@RoadTrainAdventures oh, lucky then it was okay still to start it.
Enjoyed the video chap..excellent
Thanks heaps. It's great to have you along
We’ve been away on holiday just replying to your last episode top job
Awesome. Thanks Nick. Hope you had a great holiday.
Awesome to watch, my father taught me how to do the truckies hitch when I was about 10yrs old and I still use it today (I am not a truckie though)
Thanks. Yes it certainly works well
Good job 👍👍
Thanks Farzad
Nice views 👍👍👍cool trip👍👍
Thanks Eric
Sorry you don't have ratchet straps down under , much better than rope /love how you diagnosed the issue / loved watching that huge drive trip
Hi Paul. If course we have ratchet straps. We even have ratchets on our chains.
Watching your channel from Canada 🇨🇦
Awesome. It's great to have you along.
Hi my friend,im sat watching this video realising ive seen it before! And ive still not switched off! Much as i enjoy your narration you have to take second place to the scenery! It never fails to make me feel relaxed, and when i see a strip of tarmac going into the distance with just about nothing between you and the horizon. I know from your films you love oz,as do i! Never been there and have no chabce of getting there unless im 'in the cab' with you. Could you also pass on my appreciation to your bosses, apart from the obvious fact they have a very good asset in you as a driver you are just about the best advert for thier company they could have! You are helpfull(strapping up the broken suspension on the trailer of the indian guys train!)considerate and polite. You look after your truck and take pride in the work and the equipment. And for them to let ypu stop and do clips of amazing places on the way is something most companies over here(UK)wouldnt like due to time restraints,i know your situation is a bit different with the colossal mileages you do but i dont think ive heard you say you've been late! Please keep it between the ditches and be safe. Im so envious! And that kenny sounds sweet as! Derrick.
Thanks Derrick for those kind words. You know, I wish I could come to Europe to drive. Not forever but just to experience that lifestyle too. I guess we all want what we don't have now.
@@RoadTrainAdventures we have some really nice countryside i used to love driving around Wales doing deliveries, gets interesting the further north you go as the english signage gradually disappears! And Welsh writing is not the easiest to follow when looking for directions!!! Kind words for a kind person! If you do come to the uk,dont bring a double,it would scare the natives! Most have trouble with cars! I dont know about over there but the standard of driving here is not so high! We have people here(notice i didnt use the word drivers!)who can crash on thier own on a straight piece of road in daylight with a dry road! I was swapping cogs at about 6 years old in the car and my dads truck, both me and my brother would steer around quarries in a ford D series 6x4 tipper, one of my 'achievements' was working for a tipper company driving a modern(!) Iveco 6x4 kinda newer version of my dads, then one day i was on the 10ton 4x2 D series, only a few years newer than my dads, shed a little tear that day! If you enjoy what you do its no longer is a job but a privilege, seeing the outside world and just enjoying every minute,im glad i had my 18 months,id hav been happy with 18 days, doing a job i promised myself i would do when i was a kid. For me mission accomplished! Have rc trucks now,w900 a 389 and a volvo fh12,closest ill get now,oh and thanks for the 'noise' sounds almost as nice as the cat in my pete!! Damn got to go watch convoy again now!! Stay safe and shiny side up!
You're so right about doing what you love. I just delivered in Portland, Victoria and was wondering where I was going to go next. Turns out they sent me to Adelaide to do a pick up for Wiluna, WA. Awesome. I haven't been up there in a while so that will definitely be another video.
@@RoadTrainAdventures well im sat watching a film as its 00:31 here so meant to be bed time! I look forward to the video,im sure i have notificatios on so should get it when youve done it! Have a safe drive, and dont forget the coffee!!
Will do
Great respect for you . From Pakistan. Peace be upon you.
Thanks heaps
It's great to have you along
Im a young swedish truck driver, many of my friends and people come up to me and say, you drive a really big truck and I think its awsome, its about 24 meters long with gross weight about 64 tones. Then I watch the trucker out is austrailia and u got like 2-4 trailers your back and drive it like nothing, I think these kinda videos are really intresting to watch beacause then you see how other contries the drive trucks and the loads. Awsome video mate, as a fellow trucker I say, keep safe on the roads :).
Thanks heaps. I wish you could post photos here so you could show me what you drive.
@@RoadTrainAdventures I can take some pictures of my truck when I get my truck back :)
Sure. You can send them through the Road Train Adventures Facebook page
Am in Kleinburg Ontario Canada and dang I enjoy watching you shift that KW all over the country downunder keeping the country on move . How many miles / Kms so far on that engine ? A Batt isolator on your Batts would be a good option for you as you up and down the country. Always test each batt alone ie with no connections from the other batt. There you can tell which batt is weaker or not taking charge . Now that you mentioned Canada . Take a trip sometime for a break ie Bucket list 😂😂. Keep trucking and let be every single clip you upload . Be safe brother 🙏🙏
Yeah our trucks don't have battery isolators. I did test each battery individually. It's the only way to see which battery has dropped a cell. It turns out is was the starter motor which had now been replaced and all its well.
I don't know why people don't like manual transmission. I hate automatic. They do not shift well and I've driven many makes of trucks.
Great video mate. That new gopro is working for you very well
Yeah the GoPro is doing well. I'm having fun with it.
Another great video
Thanks heaps
Love your video, It's always amazing to see your update.
I've been doing HC supermarket store delivery in Perth for nearly a year.
Hopefully one day I can drive Road ranger road train do some long-distance driving to see different part of Australia.
Tonkin Hwy road work been going on for at least 3 years+, and no one know when will it be done.
Safe trip mate.
Thanks Chris. I'll be leaving Melbourne tomorrow to come to Perth so I'm sure I'll see you. Ha ha
@@RoadTrainAdventures haha See you on the road. Safe journey.
Awesome
That head cam makes me seasick! All the others are fantastic!
Yeah I wondered if it would have that affect. It was the first time I used it. From now I make any great movement slow so it won't be that bad from now on.
@@RoadTrainAdventures You have to drive...so don't worry about me. It is a very nice video. Did you go all the way to Perth?
Of course. We normally take over what we pick up.
@@RoadTrainAdventures How long does it actually take, with your normal stops?
Usually no longer than 3 days from the yard
Looks like a nice trip
Most of the time anyway.
Great video 👍
Thanks again Andrew
Thanx John..I have traveled in a lot of countries especially through Europe..Aussie trucks dwarf all of them but in size & quality..U.S talk about 18wheelers & they are small fry on Aussie roads..😢
Yes our trucks are longer. I would live to try driving in Europe or the US.
Enjoyed the video. I'm from Canada 🇨🇦. 4 degrees Celsius isn't cold 😅. -30 degrees Celsius is cold 😅. Now what amazes me is how you guys put up with 40+ degrees Celsius.
Cheers ✌️😎
Thanks Shawn. At 40 degrees we're still wearing long pants and sleaves. Ha ha. It's great to have you along too.
If I ever get to Australia I'll pay you for a ride along. Love your video's.
