Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (1999, PC) Review

  • Back in 1999, in a time where point-and-click adventure games have already died out its flame, Lucas Arts released the first 3D action adventure game based in Indy's adventures. In my honest opinion, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is a huge overlooked gem.

    Emperor's Tomb has more modern gameplay but Infernal Machine still has the best story, level design and exploration. I will remember exploring open levels like Meroe or King Sol Mines forever.

      I wish we could get remasters / remakes of both games with modern controls and updated graphics. That would be great.

    This is my favourite game. I've played hundreds of games, but this has a special place in my heart. I was an indoors kid and this game helped me travel to distant exotic places from my room.
    I played this game today. More than 22 frikkin years later. Today it was a breeze to play through. But back then as a little kid, I was only allowed 2 hours per weekend on the PC. Which is probably why I remember playing this for a long long time. The puzzles were also a bit complex for my little brain. But now everything seems easier. I don't know if it's because I already have a vague memory of what needs to be done.
    My favourite levels are Tian Shan river, Shambhala sanctuary, Palawan Lagoon, VI Pudovkin, Meröe and Peru. I'm not a fan of the other levels.
    I searched for texture packs and mods to give it a more realistic feel playing almost 22 years later. I expected to find some "remastered" versions or HD textures. But I couldn't find any.
    There's a GitHub repo for modding tools, but no one has submitted any work.
    I read somewhere that Paramount forbade any modding, and it was strictly enforced back in the day.
    Sigh 😔
    I literally had tears in my eyes after playing this game. I don't know if it was nostalgia or fear of becoming older or the lack of anyone to share my excitement.
    Thanks for your video.

    Excellent review! Infernal Machine was how I was introduced to Indiana Jones. The game was so influential to me that my Indy outfit is based off the game and I have collected several of the weapons featured in this fantastic game!

    Loved that game. Was really looking forward to the N64 version, so I didn't have to try and run it on my dad's under-powered PC (and I was away at university and still using my Amiga 1200 as my computer - so I could only play the PC during holidays. But we never got it in PAL-territories. :(
    Still, I can get an Overdrive and run the complete PAL ROM on my N64 these days!

    You didn't mention that Indy could be transformed into Guybrush Threepwood in the PC version. Either by using a code, or by entering a special location in the Aetherium level.

      @@itsaPIXELthing also if you have Indy as Guybrush and you use the rocket launcher it fires chickens and some music plays.

    I remember playing this one on the PCs back in the day.
    As you say the controls and camera etc are very "clunky" by today's standards but this was back when 3rd person games were very much finding their feet. Play the original ps1 Tomb Raider today and you'll find it just as awkward.
    However, the chance to be Indiana was enough to make me persevere!

    • @itsaPIXELthing
      @itsaPIXELthing  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Pritchard Yeah, Tomb Raider games were also kind of awkward to control and, from time to time, with some nasty camera movement ;)

    The last Indiana Jones game I've played was The Fate of Atlantis, on my sound card-less 386 :-)
    Before that, I'd played The Last Crusade (PC) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (Atari 2600).

    The Nintendo 64 and the pc versions have very slight differences. In the n64 version you can find a cave system behind the waterfall on the first level, the animations are "simplified" plus i think a few items are unavailable. I think I played through the stages 1/4 the way through at a time using the all levels cheat and only beat the game a few years ago.

    When i was a kid i played this game with some cheats, one day i was on the 2nd level and i was stuck... so i pressed al the F buttons (F1, F2, F3, etc) and suddenly the game freaked out, the textures mixed up with others, the audio was wrong, it was hilarious, for example, Indy's back had like His face, with sophias' face and some nazi's face, when i oppened a door it sounded "An idol, an idol, an idol, an idol, an idol" the best experience that i had up to this day

    • @itsaPIXELthing
      @itsaPIXELthing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never played it on a real N64, only using an emulator, 'cause, as you know, it was never released here in Europe.
      The controls on the PC version were a bit enfuriating at times, but, back then, I got used to them 'cause the story was/is really good! :) And I love Indiana Jones related stuff ;)
      Thanks for watching and for your comment! Appreciate it!

    Just finished it. I emulated the N64 version, cause I couldn't get neither the GOG nor Steam versions to run properly. Honestly, this game holds up far better than Tomb Raider, which I quitted after the third level. Other than the last part feeling like a fever dream, my only gripes are that there were a couple of unfair puzzles and that the experience ends up feeling a bit lonely after a while (In the movies, Indy would have memorable companions along during the adventure. Here that isn't the case outside of Sophia appearing in some cutscenes, and it gets a bit boring). I personally prefer Fate of Atlantis and Emperor's Tomb more, but for a first 3D entry, this one was very good. I can totally see why it´s a fan favorite.

    I wouldn't say Infernal Machine takes place RIGHT before the events of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Crystal Skull takes place in 1957. Infernal Machine takes places ten years early in 1947. But yeah, its now the Cold War where the villains are the Soviets - so sure. Indy slowed down a bit when he approached middle age.

    The major stumbling block for most people wasn't just the Tomb Raider gameplay (which is ironic) but the fact they didn't get Harrison Ford to reprise his role for the game.

    the N64 version is inferior to the PC version, the N64 version copies the Ocerina of Time button layout, the PC version was amazing, yet there was no reason for the N64 version in 2000, considering the same year we got Majora's Mask

    Myself, I think this is my third favourite game definately. I really disliked how clunky and confusing Emperor's Tomb was, but this has much cooler of a story and cooler looking levels. I really hate when people complain about this being a Tomb Raider ripoff. But nice video though!

      @itsaPIXELthing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The emperor's tomb was good for gameplay, but the story was all over the place, as far as story goes, the infernal machine was better.
