Hi there! I have the Antex Craft Fire Writer one, but it happens that the pen and the cable heat up so much that I'm not even capable of holding it (at level 7 of power or so, not even higher), is it normal? I'm a bit worried, I don't want the machine to catch in flames suddenly or something like that :(

Hi there, thanks for your question - 7 is quite a high setting for the tool. The only way to reduce the heat it is to not prolong the use and take small breaks, letting it cool down and then gradually increase the heat setting. We'd suggest not setting the temperature too high when first switching it on. Hope this helps

Could I use a gas powered soldering iron for this ?

Hi Jim, the following reply is from Ben - "You could, I've never used one so I'm not sure on how well they will maintain their heat when in contact with the timber. Also, the mark that it will make will be different from what you see here, but I'm sure it will work."

You said you finish the pyro project with oil. Can you use walnut oil or what kind do you use.

Hi Kay, Walnut oil will be fine for anything decorative but it does go rancid over time, so avoid putting it on anything like wooden spoons and chopping boards. A finishing oil is a good choice when oiling. Ben tends to use this one as he can use it on other projects as well because it is food safe when dry.

Hi Kay, the following reply is from Ben - " Sue Walters. Pyrography Workbook. It's the best one I've found. Great information and advice on kit, technique, suitable timbers and tips ect."
