Trends are one thing, but I think the blindness when you just have "bad makeup" is largely because you have a vision in your head of what you were trying to do and you're kinda seeing that vision instead of seeing what you actually look like.
It reminds me of how my younger brother is currently 24 years old, but to me he doesn't look like a grown man because in my mind he's still like 11, so when I look at him I don't really see what he looks like, I see what my internal idea of him is. Of course he doesn't literally look 11, but my mind kinda ages him down significantly because I'm projecting the features I've seen on him growing up, you know? Similarly with makeup, you may project your idea of what it's supposed to look like.

From the perspective of a neuroscience grad: what you've described in "taking a step away" is really the key to SO MANY aspects of human psychology. We really can lose our sense of perspective, not being able to "see the woods for the trees" as some might say. When too close to something, we can and often do lose clear sense of perspective. That's why therapists need therapists of their own, why doctors can't write scripts for themselves, and why sometimes you might encounter the phrase "learned helplessness" in which victims of abusive relationships may become accustomed to their relationship dynamic as normal or unavoidable. We ALL fall victim to this. Don't stress if you look back on your 2016 brows with disdain, many do 😅

Especially if people are now afraid that theyre currently experiencing some type of makeup blindess, relax, if you like your look then thats what you do. I was a makeup artist about 15 years and sometimes a client would come in with same makeup style from much younger days. Really dark eyeliner all around her eyes with tons of blue eye shadow and a strong lip. I worked for Bobbi Brown so it was my pleasure to show the client the difference in a lighter and more effective way to enhance her features with a softer look. I don't think our society has a very healthy relationship with embarrassment. It seems to want to turn it into a sort of terrible toxic shame needlessly.
There is actually a healthy way to process embarrassment or feelings of shame. There are also healthier and kinder ways we as a society we can react to other people's embarrassing moments too... and actually, I think this is the real issue. We can accept the moment for what it was but find more appreciation that it has passed, is not deterministic, and that it can be recovered from... ..i.e that we will allow a person to recover from it.

I try not to sweat those old photos. I know that each time I do my makeup, I do my best with the knowledge, products, and skin that I have. It doesn't always end up looking the exact way I hoped it would but it's never extreme so I have no shame. I prefer a more subtle look. I put effort into my appearance and I don't leave my home uncomfortable with my application. I can't let fear of makeup blindness be added to my list of anxieties.

I'm autistic and I can't stand the super thick brows. I'm not a jerk who says anything, but it sucks that I'm so bugged by it that I get genuinely pet peeve level upset upon seeing it. I'd struggle if someone around me had it. I still wouldn't say anything, but I just don't understand the trend of big blocky caterpillar eyebrows, especially on small faces. Might be the era I grew up in and whatever eyebrow trends happened then that I got conditioned by, but really big ones I feel like just make me look at the brows and nothing else. 7:47 is what I'm talking about or the big high fashion which became Instagram trend eyebrows. Also in her case, the lips are competing with the brows in my opinion. I think if you're gonna have a statement piece, you need just one, mostly because I don't know which to focus on. The brows win just because they are a darker color.
Again, not going to say anything, I don't want anyone to feel bad and it's just my personal internal response/preference, but I had to share. Mostly because I hope someone else feels like I do but is in full agreement that we keep that inside thought inside because people can do whatever they want with their make up and look. I wish my internal response was "not my thing, but good for you!" instead of "Omg, it's all my eyes see now. I can't stop."
