Did my car for first time with T Cut. Never used it before. Think I put to much on because it took ages to get rid of the hazing. In this hot weather I was sweating 😅. Then put some polish on. Still bit hazy. On other side of car I didn’t put much on. Came off better. Learning curve. 👍

I sprayed a guitar with Montana gloss acrylic paint - just because they have a superb colour range and the cans put the colour on pretty smooth. Then used Autotek acrylic laquer. After that I used T-cut by hand with a classic yellow with red stitch polishing cloth. 2-3 phases with the stuff and it got rid of all the slight orange peel left over from wet sanding and small scratches to a mirror finish. Despite what it says on the tin, I found the best process was to work it in quickly and buff it off quickly, but be sure to use fresh soft cloth/microfibre to polish it out each time. If you hang around it can leave boundary marks in a type of bloom/haze that you have to rework to shift. On the rear of the guitar body I had to make a repair and just repainted it without the laquer and that buffed out just as well on it's own. It was a light colour mind you so I can't vouch for dark colours.
This is what i was looking for Maguires vs T CUT... and you can see why maguires is double the price (atleast here in Australia). Using the compund and the Maguire polishing after is the best option but more expensive
Good video specky. I think t cut is underrated. When working by hand I was always told to work it in until it goes clear/oily. That way you break down the abrasives and finish it down better. The key is to use a microfibre folded into a pad which will allow you to exert enough pressure to break it down properly (I've always found it tough with microfibre pads). I've actually found it to finish down alright when used in this way but it never hurts to use a coat of SRP before the wax.
Well done mate👍. I used to use the old T-cut with my old Makita SA700 back in the 90s. Bloody nightmare and didn't know any better. Had to use Super resin over it with a soft pad to remove it haha. But at the end of the day it's still on the shelves in shops 100 yrs later, so people are still buying it.
With no electric polisher, used Mcguire's by hand. Takes an awful lot of work to remove even very minor scratches on lacquer with this product but the finish seemed very acceptable.
Very good test. I used to bust a gut using Tcut and then Simonize wax but from this I can see it's rather out of date. The clothes were saturated with torn off paint then. However a friend came round and we used original Tcut with orbital polisher and he used splashes of water all the time. This was an old 2 pack flat colour and the result was good. So I think it has it's uses. I would always modern wax after. I do belive it is unwise to use harsh cutting compounds on clear coated cars. Of course in the old days it was a badge of honour to say how many coats you had,12 coats!!
Good video, think your great for the British market viewers. I would look to do this test again but with a machine polisher, I do believe by hand polishing does nothing, too many anomalies.

Honestly I can't say how well it'll work. T-Cut is very abrasive so you might want to use something less aggressive first, or use it after to return some gloss.

Hey great video really chilled I have a BMW 6 series its really need of a buff and polish Should i go with the maquires ? Also could yoi recomend a forst tome machine polisher and what pads etc. Id be most 🙏
The Meguires is a good compound but if you're new to polishing then you may want to start with their Ultimate Polish instead as it's less aggressive and easier to use. As for a beginner machine polisher I'd suggest a DAS6 or similar budget dual action polisher.
I remember as a kid my dad used to get me to help him wax our e36 with T-CUT mettalic and then follow with SRP. It always was very tricky to buff off and it smelled ok. To this day my dad still doesn’t understand what the difference between a wax and polish is. He seems to think SRP is a wax and wax is a polish 🙄

Great video! I’m actually looking to use a product on a shower wall that has gone a bit grubby. Could you recommend anything? Have you used anything similar to clean a shower wall?
Fair question! Hazing is the result of your compound being too aggressive and leaving behind deeper abrasions in the paint. You'd need to polish them out with finer abrasive compounds and polishes until the surface is perfectly smooth. Scholl Concepts S20 Black is a great product as it starts very aggressively but becomes finer and finer as you use it until it becomes like a finishing polish. If you don't like the sound of a diminishing abrasive then you could try Meguiars Ultimate Compound and change pads (firm to soft) as needed. Hope this helps!
@@SpeckyMcSporran thanks I used the compound you mentioned to remove a very light scratch by hand and it took the scratch away but left a 75 mm haze patch right in the middle of the black panel , so it’s for that only and sorry I didn’t explain correctly
Ok in that case if you're doing it by hand then Angel Wax Perfect Polish might work well to smooth it out. Keep in mind that polishing by hand will require more effort and time.
So for a panel Is Better the new t-cut than the original formula? I busto bought the original One but After viewing your video i think i Will change It with the newer
Hi Specky, the results are totally different.the original T-CUT on the bonnet wouldn't come off by hand.the Meguiars one is the best to use with a DA polisher.
Great comparisons here as I was just wandering what the difference would be between hand and machine applications. On a 2002 vw golf Gold in colour and never been treated, as it's an old paint would it be best to use original T-cut by hand, then Panel wipe and finish with Maguires 120 polish by machine? Thanks in advance.
If you've got an older single stage paint (no lacquer) then original T-Cut by hand will remove oxidation before you move to refining it. If you have lacquer then start with machine polishing with a fine polish to see how much cut you'll get and work up to a harder pad or heavier cut polish if you need it.
Good question! Polish is generally something to improve the look of paint by removing the dead layer or damaged top layer of paint. That means there's nothing really left behind to reapply. But if you're using a product like AutoGlym Super Resin Polish then you'll get best results using it 3 - 4 times a year as it contains fillers and wax.
Iv got an issue if you can please give us some advice, I bought a car with a sticker on it, I removed the sticker but it seems abit lighter underneath, you can tell its different shade, I was assuming it would've been darker under the sticker but its actually slightly lighter. Any advise?
If you're new to polishers then the Guild Dual Action Polisher from Argos is a good place to start. Last I checked it was £50 and you only need to pick up a few pads and some polish to kick things off. Dual Action polishers are the most "beginner friendly" tool to learn with. You can buy better ones with more power and better features but the fundamentals are the same. I've got a video in the works as a beginners guide to machine polishing so keep your eyes peeled for it.
Maybe a stupid question but last time I t-cut a car I got it washed a couple of weeks after and it all went away. Are you supposed to do it each time? Can I just do the spots that need it? (My mirrors and handles and one scratch only need it as I have an 08 red car it’s getting worn)
Was it T-Cut colour fast by any chance? That contains coloured fillers that wash away over time. A proper compound like the T-Cut rapid scratch remover would give a permanent result as long as you don't add new scratches. And yes, you can use it on the areas needed without having to do the whole car.
@@SpeckyMcSporran no idea, very guilty of doing the girl thing of ‘ask the man in the shop’ but I’ll make sure to get that one this time. Thank you, helpful video 🙏
Meguiar's wins hands down. Look at the haze with the t-cuts and hard to remove as well proves it isn't a great product especially on metallic paint with hard lacquer clear coat.
Hi, l have a black laminate worktop beside my sink that's developed a few surface scratches and some faded yellowing around the scraches, I've tried white vinegar/bicarbonate soda but doesn't work, interestingly l wiped on wd40 and it has worked and restored the black sheen but I think it will wash off with warm soapy water, do you think t cut scratch remover would return the original black sheen to the laminate if it was well polished in? Does t cut scratch remover contain a wax ? Thanks m8

im gonna be getting a da polisher soon as i already have meguires ultimate compound could i use any brand of polish after as i currently only have autoglym srp and autofinesse tripple...is that even classed as a polish ? and i really dont want to buy anymore....thanks
I started with the Argos £50 machine polisher and it's good to learn with. SRP and Triple are all-in-one polishes so they won't do much for damage but will definitely improve the paint.
@@SpeckyMcSporran great,so start with meguiars ultimate compound then either srp or tripple,I've currently got my eye on the das 6 da from clean and shiny for £89
Good polisher that. Yes, follow up the compounding with a polish. If they don't do enough then pick up something like Meguiars M205 or maybe Angel Wax Perfect Polish.
@@SpeckyMcSporran I gotta ask, I mentioned on Instagram about using ultimate compound as a comparison, had you already thought of it or did I help? ;-)
T-cut "Tetrosyl cutting oil" is probably one of the best brand names known in the automotive aftermarket as its been around for ever. However in todays modern market its not a good choice for those that know about detailing. Its really the go to retail product for the general public that know no better. It wouldn't be going anywhere near any motor of mine. Might as well be pouring Brasso, with grains of sand onto your paint ! 😉
Yep, all fair points. The rapid scratch remover is a decent compound as long as you're willing to refine after but there are better products out there.
They're mentioned often but there aren't many new videos due to there not being many new products from AG. They're an established brand that doesn't need much marketing, it's a household name. That being said, I've got a video featuring them soon.
I'll test the Rapid Scratch Remover again on a softer pad as this is very soft paint but I doubt it'll finish much better, good as a cheap cutting compound though.
No its horrible dry stuff totally out of date and takes bigger scratches out leaving dull flat paint with smaller scratches...loads of better products out there by menzerna 3m meguiars to name a few
The rapid scratch remover is the one you want for modern lacquered paint, the original is for old single stage paint. The video will show how they differ.
Me too about 10 years ago! But I did use the Mettalic T Cut last summer to help my neighbour. i just T cut and polished an old Peugeot 406 with very impressive results
It still works, glad you polished it too as that'll definitely improve the clarity 👌🏻
@@SpeckyMcSporran Indeed the polish and also a wax really brought back the shine after years of neglet.
Awesome, nothing better than a shiny old car 👌🏻
The problem is the video doesn’t show the scratches before and after using the products but apart from that they are good videos
Hi Specky, really good comparison. Is there a electric polisher/kit you would recommend or are they all very similar to use?
If you're new to polishers then the Guild Dual Action Polisher from Argos is a good place to start. Last I checked it was £50 and you only need to pick up a few pads and some polish to kick things off. Dual Action polishers are the most "beginner friendly" tool to learn with. You can buy better ones with more power and better features but the fundamentals are the same.
I've got a video in the works as a beginners guide to machine polishing so keep your eyes peeled for it.
How does the ultimate compare to something like koch chemie h9?
Sadly I haven't tried any abrasives from Koch
Thank you, I haven’t finished watching, I hope the Dolly Parton listening is true 😃
Why wouldn't it be true? I love a bit of Dolly!
Hi can you recommended a cheap panel wipe please?
I make my own with ipa and water, doesn't get much cheaper
Glad I could help!
9:13 I have the same machine, comes in many brand names i know. What speed do you keep the speed dial at when cutting?
I find it very underpowered, usually 4.
@@SpeckyMcSporran I was on 3 and a half. Thanks ill try 4.
Thanks m8
I wouldn't recommend something as harsh as T-cut to remove scratches from plastic as it's super aggressive. Try meguiars plast-x instead.
Good video - I wasn't sure what the damage was you initially deliberately added - looked like swirls?
Yea it was swirls, wasn't going too deep with the damage as this is my only test panel at the moment.
Remember using T Cut on a mate modified Moggy he had for sale . Christ it was hard work on a warm day and that was out of sunlight . Sure my fathers got some of this in his garage , if i do his car hes so confused by the methods used now and always moans about how much Ive paid out on the products
It's showing it's age for sure but the rapid scratch remover is pretty good as a compound before polishing.
@@SpeckyMcSporran I've got the Megs compound and some G3 scratch remover but has shown how products are evolving over the years
what a good presenter
Thank you 💗
Really helpful. Thank you!
🙌
I remember this from a kid my granddad and bro used it . I remember it was a hard polish to get off .one my work mates put it on a bonet it won’t come off then man who owned the car want happy n asked me haw get it off I told him I tryed taking it off but won’t come off need a buffing merchen take it off he laughed at me so I said I no what I’m talking about as I was a Valeter at Land Rover soon changed his mind n was asking for prices I told him I don’t do it any more n don’t no anyone that does it. Never take piss out someone that knows what there on about he sold the car n lost some cash as sold with a big white coat patch on the bonnet should took the advise
Tcut isn’t a polish it removes road film and very fine layer of top coat. It will be hazey until it is polished. Then it will look better.
Correct, it's a compound.
im gonna be getting a da polisher soon as i already have meguires ultimate compound could i use any brand of polish after as i currently only have autoglym srp and autofinesse tripple...is that even classed as a polish ? and i really dont want to buy anymore....thanks
@@SpeckyMcSporran thanks for the advice 👍
Happy to help
Loved the video :-) good to see the comparison between old and new ways :-)
Cheers dude 👊
@@SpeckyMcSporran I gotta ask, I mentioned on Instagram about using ultimate compound as a comparison, had you already thought of it or did I help? ;-)
Let's just say we both had the same idea 😁👍
@@SpeckyMcSporran awesome :-)
You don’t even need a buffer with arms that quick 😂
T cut always reminds me of brasso,.....
What inspection light are you using and is it really a case of more money is best?
I have the Unilite IL-625R which I got for around £35 on eBay. You can get cheaper lights, it just depends on what features you need.
@@SpeckyMcSporran if it's good enough for you and works well and shows on camera then it's good for me.
Why is there no mention of Autoglym products these days?
They're mentioned often but there aren't many new videos due to there not being many new products from AG. They're an established brand that doesn't need much marketing, it's a household name. That being said, I've got a video featuring them soon.
You should always polish it arfter and then see the result
Yep, that's what I said in the video but I wanted to show the performance of the products before polishing.
@@SpeckyMcSporran I know mate I commented to fast 😂my bad great work 💪💪
No worries bud, I appreciate the support 👊🏻
Super brother
So you t cut then use polish
Yes, T-Cut is highly abrasive so with modern paint it's best to refine it with a polish.
You didn't mention the smell of the original Tcut, it was awful, hated the stuff.
Fair point, it's pretty bad.
I love the smell of tcut, WD40 and petrol 😊
Me too!
Interesting.....
Glad you think so!
@@SpeckyMcSporran wonder what the results would be like with a different pad.....
I'll test the Rapid Scratch Remover again on a softer pad as this is very soft paint but I doubt it'll finish much better, good as a cheap cutting compound though.
Keegan Brooks
No its horrible dry stuff totally out of date and takes bigger scratches out leaving dull flat paint with smaller scratches...loads of better products out there by menzerna 3m meguiars to name a few
It doesn't work on my car. Complete waste of money
Which one did you use?
@@SpeckyMcSporran I didn't know there was a choice. Just the one in a red bottle, lol
The rapid scratch remover is the one you want for modern lacquered paint, the original is for old single stage paint. The video will show how they differ.
You're not showing us how the bonnet looked before so how we know what you've removed? What scratches or damages on the bonnet?
My mistake 🤦🏻♂️
Your not the first person to use t cut with a machine at a garage my dad worked at in the 2000s they used t cut all the time.
Ok, fair point. But did he make a youtube video about it? 😂
No he used a Nokia back then lol🤣
Those were the days 😍
Me too about 10 years ago! But I did use the Mettalic T Cut last summer to help my neighbour. The whole back bumper had a few scratches and paint transfer where someone reversed into her in Asda car park.
I tried SRP and Megs Ultimate Compound by hand with a proper Polishing pad.
Sold all my machines a few years ago.
So the Mettalic T Cut worked very well.
Another great video mate 👍🏴
It's not terrible, it has a place for those who don't have machine polishers and don't worry too much about the finish.
Why the back ground music???????? mind numbing
I don't like silence
Non are as good as Car gods pro scratch in polish pain Restore.
Did you know its made by the same company?
1st
👏👏
Didnt see the purpose of this video could have been better if used on 3 different spots
T cut scratch remover doesn't work don't waste your money just tried it sh--
You don't a machine polisher with that fast hand polishing
