I’ve never seen the oneshot until yesterday-and this week’s episode of Critical Role was the reason that prompted me to watch the Night Before Critmas. Just in time for the holidays too!

He's clean, shaven, has a look like he's happy, he even says 'My parents are alive.' when you pull the string, if it didn't come in a two pack with Nott, you wouldn't even know it's him

I feel like no one talks about ageism at all... Playing a clear stereotype isn't funny... The elderly are discriminated against quite a bit but it's like no one is ready to call it out like other "ism's." I know everyone's gonna say stuff about "everyone's too sensitive nowadays" or "cancel culture", but I just don't think making a caricature of a group who faces real discrimination is funny or clever... I love what Travis does, but this character ruins this one shot for me, and makes me worry about the future of campaign 3.
What's the alternative for other groups? Is it not the problematic stereotype? The elderly face real ageism, yet no one wants to talk about it.

To be fair, it's easy to forget that Percy was a fighter class, since he was always just referred to as a gunslinger.
@@CptObvious it's because they switched from Pathfinder, where gunslinger is its own class, so they made a homebrew thing for it.
Right, and when they switched to 5e Matt made Gunslinger an archetype of fighters. My point was that since they only ever referred to him as the gunslinger archetype, and never as the fighter class, it's easy to forget that he technically was one.

Chutney was 100% the MVP of this episode, I laughed at every single thing that came out of Travis' mouth. Arthur was a close second bc Taliesin as a teenage asshole will never not be amazing.

It took me 1 hour and 44 minutes to realize that the inspiration was nightmare before Christmas 😂 and I love it.

I remember that bit from GM/DM Tips from Matt, where he says "one-shots are a great way of letting the usual DM play for once!", but I love how he still narrates his actions like he would when DM'ing. That man has the best imagination and narrative skills ever.

why is no one talking about Liam's absolutely genius moment when he combines Oogie Boogie's dice/gambling symbolism with the lyrics "put your fate in your hands. Take a chance, roll the dice!" from "Your Turn to Roll"?? It fits so perfectly! I knew right away as soon as he started describing the circle of trees that this was Nightmare Before Christmas inspired and i was so damn hype! Nightmare Before Christmas is my literal favorite movie of all time!!

I like how Matt provides helpful input without being controlling of the game, when Liam asked for help he was glad to give advice. I think that's so cool

Yes! And hard! I DM for my crew most times switching only when I feel I have to much to do in life. And the few times I sit down as a player with that same group the first 20-30 minutes my brain is in total DM-mode. It's a problem 😂

Sam and Travis watched this one night before Campaign 3, and Sam decided he wanted FCG to be a Flat-Exandrian to mess with Matt and the others, and Travis decided to bring back Chutney as Chetney.

Ive been reading some comments on this stream( cant confirm cause i havent seen the most recent episode of campaign 3 or narrative telephone) but supposedly during the narrative telephone special, chutney was sent to exandria, specifically Nicodranis. My spelling aside, travis' new character might actually be our favorite santa stabbing elf in disguise
nah, Santa doesn't exist in this universe. it's an entirely "different" person. but, like, obvs the same character
@@Destinysday i would love to agree with this but i really doubt they'll incorporate earth into their stories. it's too close to breaking the 4th wall at that point. not to mention that in the version of earth depicted in this one shot, they're making figures of their characters from the past 2 campaigns. this means chutney would be crossing over from an earth that critical role exists in, which is kind of a mind fuck.

I love Wormsack’s introduction. It’s loud, over the top, it feels like it’s coming straight from Liam’s imagination, and the way he says “roll for initiative” and excitedly runs off to get his map just shows how stoked he is to be running this game.

Taliesin being incredulous at how overpowered a class is is pretty funny considering critrolestats puts his maximum damage output as Percy at roughly 800 damage in 1 round.
What episode did that happen in? I forget when Percy kills everything, since he does it so often
Austin White the 800 damage was a calculation by critrolestats to see what the max damage for each character would be in a single round. Percy could deal over 800 damage in a single round, while the runner up was Grog at around 550 damage in a round

i love seeing matt as a player here, i rarely ever see him break character here and its just so fun watching him brood while everyone takes notes
Seriously, between this, EXU and Undeadwood it's great seeing the burden of being DM be off Matt's shoulders and that he can just relax and fuck around for once like everyone else.
I loved everyone in this, but Travis was insane. Every time he was opening his mouth it was another highlight of the episode. He stayed in character, with accent and all, for the full episode and the final betrayal made this episode an instant favorite. This is why I love these one-shot special episodes. You can only do that here. Julie was also great. I hope she will come back in the future.

This is my sixth consecutive year of watching this wonderful episode and my fifth consecutive year of watching it on Christmas Eve. I have nothing unique or particularly interesting to add other than I hope everyone that sees this has a Merry Critmas and a beautiful New Year. Now, it's time to wrap presents.
Matt did 78 damage in one turn. Too bad he's a forever DM.
This wasn't a super min-maxed character. It just a plain vanilla single-class 8th level Fighter (Battle Master) with only a +3 strength modifier, with two-weapon fighting. I assume his canes were re-skinned maces, so only 1d6, not the classic 1d8 rapiers you'd use to min-max a dual wield build.
Fighters have good burst damage with Action Surge (1/rest at that level); especially Battle Master if you use all 4 of your superiority dice in that one turn, especially if you don't miss. And especially if you get a crit to double a superiority die.
I love to see Matt play, but not because of min-maxed character builds. He does play tactically well, e.g. if you watch him in Escape From the Bloodkeep he makes some cool and clutch moves. But this fight wasn't complicated. It happened to play to the strengths of the build he chose, but I think most of the cast would have been able to do that with that character.
If you really wanted to see amazing burst, Fighter 3 / Paladin 5 or something could have dumped +2d8 Divine Smite into some of those 5 attacks *as well* as superiority dice, including the crit which would double the smite dice. A 3rd-level Battlemaster still gets 4 superiority dice (d8), and Action Surge, and a 5th level paladin gets 6 spell slots (including 2x 2nd-level for +3d8 smites). And could have been wielding a Greatsword (2d6 base damage on each of 4 attacks), or still doing dual wield with 2 different "fighting style"' options from Fighter and Paladin (1d8 base on each of 5 attacks assuming optimal 1h weapons).
@@Peter_Cordes I remember one time I did almost 300 damage in one round at level 12 with 9 levels of paladin and 3 levels of champion fighter. And Right now im playing a glory paladin and planning on taking 3 levels of echo fighter after I get my aura. It’s looking like it will be pretty nuts at later or even mid levels.

They're all amazing, especially the Darrington Brigade. Also this isn't the only character that Travis reprised in C3, there was another one from another one shot earlier on in the campaign.

I also love that Arthur is supposed to be super lazy but he's also incredibly skilled at everything because he's played by Taliesin "Anti-Wheaton" Jaffe.
