  • This is our 2nd Video installing a Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Card / AIC Hardware Unboxed. Our 1st Titan Ridge install was with the Gigabyte X399 Aorus Extreme Motherboard. That Motherboard had the THB_C Header but no Bios support. And it worked. For the most part. And to this day, still no Bios support! However, this time around, we have both Motherboard support and Bios support. And it works!
    Card Labels:

The Thunderbolt Control Panel is different! The Thunderbolt Control Panel no longer shows up as a Notification icon on the Task Bar. Instead, the Thunderbolt Control Panel launches as an Application which can be pinned to the Task Bar. Otherwise, the Thunderbolt Control Panel launches upon Device Enumeration.
This was suppose to be the first install of two, for the Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 after the Comparison and AIC Simple Install on Gigabyte TRX40 Designare. While trying to install the 2nd Retail Boxed Titan Ridge AIC along with the Titan Ridge included with the Motherboard, the Computer would not Boot! Bummer! Big time!
We're working on a follow up Video to detail the problem. What happened, why it happened, how we resolved the problem. Suffice to say, the two Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 AICs are NOT the same! So far, only one can be installed.
And while working through the problems this created, we discovered two other potential problems. Those too will each have a follow up video. You will want to watch both of those Videos!
We learn by doing. And when we have problems, that's when we discover new solutions. Methodically.
We hope You find this Video useful. The details provided are so anyone can install this AIC and expect similar results. Details matter! Stay tuned!

    2.) Highpoint RocketStor 6661A Thunderbolt 3 to PCIe 3.0 X16 Expansion Chassis - amzn.to/3pkQVmj
This experience is a 1 hour synopsis of 7 1/2 hours of Filming, followed up the next day with 4 hours of Filming in diagnosing and solving two problems encountered while trying to install two Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 AICs. Bottom Line - Don't! Suffice to say... Only install one Titan Ridge AIC, and only this one in the Box! Details, next Video!

And if You're wondering, can I install Thunderbolt 3 on a TRXX40 Motherboard that does not have the THB_C Header? We don't know yet. Our next Video may help to answer that question, of what and what to expect. Stay tuned! You will NOT have Bios support! Without Bios Support, No Memory Allocation for Thunderbolt Devices.
Furthermore, the 5 Pin Thunderbolt THB_C Header can be interchanged with the 10 Pin Thunderbolt THB_C Header by way of a Conversion cable. However, the 14-1 Pin Thunderbolt Header utilizes a vastly different Driver model!

I have been following this build you are doing and I gotta say, you are hands down the best computer build teacher I have found on TH-cam. No one else even comes close to your attention to detail. Also, as a scientist, I completely love your focus on function and performance as a priority rather than meaningless flashy aesthetics. In my opinion you should be getting far more subscribers than you currently have.
I also have a question. I am considering doing a similar build to the one you are currently working on. I'm planning on building it for my wife who is a researcher and uses Stata on massive databases. Her requirements for memory are huge because of the Big Data in order to run multiple regression analyses. I completely agree that your air cooling set up on this computer will work fine as you are building it, but my question is, if I built a similar build and stacked it out with 256 gigs of Memory, would I need any additional cooling, or have to go to liquid cooling which I really don't want to do, or would the cooling that you have in this system be able to handle the added heat from the additional RAM sticks?

    • @guapodesperado2822
      @guapodesperado2822 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually, I just remembered you do intend to put 256GB in this computer right? I guess you only put in 128 so far so I got confused.

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Guapo Desperado,
Thank You! Details matter! We're working on a follow up to this with problems encountered afterwards while trying to install a 2nd Titan Ridge AIC and solutions. It was a mess! Air Cooling, Noctua has it covered. We do use the additional 2nd Fan though. It may help only a little bit but we think every little bit matters! Yes, we started with 128GBs, then ramped up to all 256 GBs after the Bios Updates. Phenomenal! Added Heat? We currently don't see that as a problem. We still have to install the Thermistors and watch those potential hot spots. For testing purposes, we have the machine running 24/7. Appreciate Your Comments! Thanks for Sharing!
Bios F4c, is solid with 256GB RAM. We started with Bios F2 for 128 GBs. The latest Bios F4k was buggy and has just been replaced with F4i as of 9-25-2020. F4k messed up PCIe Lane assignments on 2nd x8 Slot rendering that Slot useless. We'll see what F4i does!
We think it helps to know the reasoning of what, why and where behind the mechanics of the machine. As well as problems and solutions encountered along the way. We learn by doing! We'll be covering other Devices we connect this with as a Content Creator and documenting those procedures as well. Stay tuned!

      Hi@@guapodesperado2822,
Easy to do! That's why we think this is so important to document - To help eliminate any confusion. 5 years ago we were trying to get 32GBs into a Computer. And now...
BTW: One more thing on Cooling. Remember, we also replace the Case 3 pin Fans with Noctua 3,000 RPM 4 pin Fans! If those ramp up, then we have cause for concern!

    • @guapodesperado2822
      @guapodesperado2822 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@BuildOrBuy thanks so much for the replies. Excellent info. And yeah I definitely caught your upgrade of the case fans. Having high performance and rampable case fans as a canary in the coal mine, per se, to indicate unhealthy heat loads is a great idea. Finding ways to either build in safeguards or having redundant failsafe mechanisms is always the best approach.

Hi@@guapodesperado2822, Absolutely! Thank You for joining Us on this journey of discovery! Your comments help Us to make better Videos! As with any Research project, documentation and testing are crucial to our success. We think You'll find the next two videos most interesting.
After 7 1/2 hours of Filming, we ran out of Camera batteries. Next day, 4 more hours, 6 Batteries, and a fresh mind to go at it again until we achieved resolution. Eager to share what we encountered! And now a new Bios as of 9-25-2020. Curious and eager to learn what's happening with that one. As we get closer to Production status, testing becomes more delicate in our approach.
Great analogy in the coal mine. Perfect! I've had other Subscribers comment on the Fans and remind them of their purpose! Yes they cool however, reason dictates if they make noise too much noise, check it out!

Just came across your channel and I love the in depth thorough reviews you've been doing for Thunderbolt cards.
I have a question thats applicable to my setup and hopefully it'll be easy to answer:
Is there anyway to know if your mobo supports thunderbolt 3 or 4 pcie cards? I'm running the asus tuf gaming x570-plus with an AMD Ryzen 3900x. Some info online I've gathered states that it depends and some info states that it won't work. I'm at a cross roads as a creator on what to do.
My job as a video editor requires hard drives with thunderbolt but my PC doesn't have any of those ports natively and I wanted to get a card to fix this short coming but no where on Asus' website or on the product page for the mobo & pcie card does it state any compatibility issues.
My biggest fear is installing the card needing to return it or troubleshoot it until I get the result I'm looking for.
As a follow-up question, if I can't use one of these PCIE cards, what would be my next solution?
    Thanks in advance!

      Hi SpriteKnight,
Welcome! Appreciate Your Comments! We still have much more to cover regarding Thunderbolt!
      ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS
      www.asus.com/us/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/TUF-Gaming/TUF-GAMING-X570-PLUS/
TUF GAMING B560M-PLUS has Thunderbolt support but not the ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS. Bummer! Some Motherboards even differ from Rev 1 to a Rev 2 or Rev 3 in whether they have Thunderbolt support or not.
The Thunderbolt Header is becoming more problematic as We've have outlined in other Videos. For ASUS, From 5 Pin to 10 Pin and now to 14 - 1 Pin which has a different driver model than before. That Motherboard Thunderbolt Header is essential for Bios support to allocate Memory for Thunderbolt Devices. Gigabyte Thunderbolt 3 only on 5 Pin Header. The ASUS Thunderbolt 4 AIC uses a 14-1 Pin Header. Hassle. Gigabyte, Thunderbolt 4 added an additional 3 Pin Header to the existing 5 Pin Header. Only ASRock has maintained a 5 Pin Header. However, the Bios settings have changed and to reiterate as well as the Driver Model.
The takeaway, Thunderbolt 3 was easy and generic whereas Thunderbolt 4 is Vendor Specific. Your Options, a different Motherboard. No Add in card for Thunderbolt on Your Motherboard. Unless... Now, it's possible to gain partial support for Thunderbolt 3 meaning no Bios Support. No guarantees on anything. I'll explain how if You want to try it. You're results may vary. Requires the Gigabyte Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 AIC.
BTW: Your AMD Ryzen 9 3900X is 12 CPU Cores. You need a CPU Upgrade if You get a new Motherboard. We have Outlined 4 Levels of Computer Builds for Rendering. Suggest a 5950x with 16 Cores. This is what We define as a 2nd Level Build. An Entry Level Build would be 10 CPU Cores. Above that would be 3rd, a TRX40 HEDT then 4th would be a WRX80 Workstation. Hope this helps! Options! We're all about Answering Subscribers Questions! What do You Render with? Adobe or DaVinci Resolve? We suggest using the Adobe MFR CPU Optimization Formula for a Rendering Build to match Components. We have a Video on that too!

      Hi Victor Medina,
Nice To Meet You! Thank You! Details matter! Short Answer, No. Possible? Maybe. Use USB-C Port instead. Data Delivery is THE one thing that makes sense with Thunderbolt 3!
      Longer Answer...
Asus Maximus VIII Hero Alpha - Is this Your Motherboard? Chipsets are the Key!
      www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO-ALPHA/
      Intel Z170 Chipset - Launched: Q3'2015
      ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/90591/intel-z170-chipset.html
On that Motherboard... You have 1 PCIe 3.0 x4 Slot. Good. However... No Motherboard Bios support. No THB_C / GPIO Header on Motherboard. Possible. No guarantees. The Titan Ridge 1.0 card has enough power to be kept alive by Jumping Pins 3 to 5 on the Titan Ridge card. That in effect was what we would be doing and have done on the x399 without Bios support!
The biggest problem, on Your Motherboard that I see right now, shared IRQs. The Primary PCIe 3.0 x16 Slot shares IRQs with the last PCIe 3.0 x4 Slot. And that could be a potential problem on an older Motherboard due to PCIe Resource Management.
Gigabyte has a new Titan Ridge 2.0 Thunderbolt card. Difference in the Two - Power Delivery according to Specs. We're going to revisit this issue on the x399 Chipset without Bios support which may be of particular interesting to You!
Hope that helps! Next Up, Samsung 980 Pro! Stay tuned!

Been watching the vids on this build pretty closely. Meticulous, thorough, clear... very enjoyable to watch, and learn.
I'm curious about this chipset and the ATX motherboards for it. One of the MBs in a PCPP list you pulled up back in July is the Gigabyte TRX40 AORUS PRO WIFI. Assuming 3 M.2 slots are sufficient, and Thunderbolt is not an immediate concern, is there any performance hit in going with that board over the Designare? Thanks!!!

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Uzer Zero,
Thanks for Your Comments! We try! Details matter! Just getting on the Platform is an accomplishment. It's a process of learning and understanding the Resources and System capabilities on TRX40 Platform. You'll be happy with Your selection and may have less problems related to beta Bios updates and PCIe Lane assignments.
There are two potential areas of Concern. Both of which anyone on TRX40 should know about. And we will address them both separately as outlined below.
1.) The NVMe stand off screws. On the TRX40 Designare, there are 4 NVMe Connectors. Two are usable. The other 2 have stacked screws. In other words a screw on top of a screw. And are hard to see. Without a socket, they cannot be removed. Requires a 4.5mm socket! The Video will explain and show the problem, in detail.
2.) DPC Latency - Windows is not a real time O/S. DPC Latency is a problem for Windows. Especially with an Audio interface. Therefor, the 1st thing to be turned off would be WiFi. Both issues apply to all of Us.
Back To Your Question, no reason to suspect a performance hit. Congratulations! Keep Us posted on Your Progress!
How much RAM are You starting with? And How will You use Your Threadripper 3? This helps Us to make better Videos!

    • @uzer_zero
      @uzer_zero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@BuildOrBuy Hey Gill - Thanks for your input!!
Yes, WiFi will be disabled, as always. Thanks for the heads up on the NVMe standoffs.
I understand AMD is announcing their next CPU in a week or so. I'm hoping that might kick the prices of the current CPUs down a little. We'll see. Hoping to research, get what I need, and start building by mid-to-end of October. Total budget around $4k (ideal system linked in a reply below, w/2070 Super as a placeholder - PCPP URL + /list/Nj6gTC ).
I plan to start w/64GB (4x16). Primary function will be as a Digital Audio Workstation, mostly synthestration using Reaper DAW software, multiple sample synths, lots of read-only data streaming, minimal live recording. Secondary function will be 3D modeling using Blender & game development using Unity.
System should be as quiet as possible, but 3D / Game Dev function requires a high-end GPU. I'm waiting on the RTX 3070 - hope the Founder's Edition is reasonably quiet, because the price is right and it's the perfect length for my case...
Have an old, 8" wide Antec Solo Mid Tower case on hand with acoustic treatment that I'd prefer to use, if possible. My concern is headroom for a cooler. I have no plan to overclock, so I'm hoping the Noctua NH-U9 TR4-SP3 will suffice (it's basically what I have in my current system). I'd also prefer not to lose the PCIe slot closest to the CPU.
      Thanks again!

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi@@uzer_zero, Absolutely! Doubt CPU prices will fall... Historically the Bundle deals were the ones to look for... However... In light of current situations even getting certain parts has been a challenge. Namely PSUs!
      Beyond the Threadripper Pro?
A Reaper Station Build! Thanks for sharing. Not familiar with Reaper. Price is right! Will have to look into that!
We ran into 4 problems we'll outline in the next video and solutions. One being the NVMe standoffs. You should be good to go! Right amount of RAM and an easy path to Upgrade to 128 later if needed.

Hi Bill, watched this and was wondering if you intend on testing connecting TB 2/1 devices into Titan Ridge. I have a Promise Pegasus array using TB 2. Promise suggests the Startec TBT3TBTADAP adapter to make things work. Are you using that in any of your tests? They are emphatic about NOT using the Apple adapter because it seems to only work with Mac equipment and not 3rd party (AKA Titan Ridge). Just sayin......keep up the excellent work.

      Hi Andrew Clark,
Nice to Meet You! Thank You! We think the problem is the Bios. We have not tried the 1st x16 Slot where the GPU sits nor the 2nd x16 Slot where the NVMe Quad Card sits.
We have only tried the 2 - x8 Slots. We now have a Titan Ridge 2.0 Card and will follow-up on this, in that video. Crazy right? We were using Bios: F4c, Dated 03/05/2‎020. There is also a new betas Bios: F4i update Dated: 09/25/2‎020. There was un update, Bios F4k, in between the 2 mentioned. It was unstable and not useable. Lots of drama, for a Computer! Hi Livin LA Vida photo, Welcome! Are talking about the Dell 27 UltraSharp Ultra HD 5K Monitor UP2715K or the Dell UltraSharp 40 Curved WUHD Monitor U4021QW? The later is Thunderbolt 3. The former is 5k. If it's on the Thunderbolt Products List, then You should be in Business! If not, Bummer!
      thunderbolttechnology.net/products
Part of the problem We're now encountering is each Vendor has a different implementation of the Motherboard Thunderbolt Header, 5 pin, 10 pin then 14-1 pin and now 2 headers, a 5 pin + 3 pin on Thunderbolt 4 by Gigabyte. Let Us know which Dell Monitor You have. And let Us know if it works! BTW: Dell is the only 8k Monitor at the Moment! Thunderbolt is very much a work in progress and becoming Brand specific in implementation! Thanks for Sharing!

I have a question regarding the titan ridge pcie card. I have several external nvme drives, mostly 10gbps. But the issue I am having is the 20gbps nvme drives. When connected to the titan ridge 2.0's usb c (thunderbolt port) I can't get the 20gbps speeds like I can on my asus rog strix z590-a gaming wifi II's usb-c 3.2 Gen2x2 port. I use 40gbps usb c cables for all my external devices, I am wondering is it only possible to get 10gbps other than a thunderbolt 40gbps external nvme enclosure. No matter what I tried the titan ridge didn't give me the 20ghbps speeds. I am missing something?

      Hi Sean W. Conway,
      Welcome! Great Question! A conundrum! You have the Solution in the Question! USB-C Thunderbolt 3 = 40Gbps. USB-C 20Gbps 2x2 is not a Thunderbolt Spec. USB4 uses a different data encoding scheme to achieve 20Gbps. A USB-C 20Gbps 2x2 Device on a Thunderbolt Port will only achieve 10Gbps. USB-C 20Gbps 2x2 requires a USB-C chipset capable of 20Gbps.
Actual Throughput is lower. They also use Different Data Encoding schemes. Thunderbolt 3 is backwards compatible to Thunderbolt 1&2. Whereas Thunderbolt 4 is backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3 only. Hope that helps!

@@BuildOrBuythanks for your reply. It's not there unfortunately. I suppose this was meant to be installed with Gigabyte's software driver for Windows. I've tried reinstalling, which didn't help. I also found that the only way to connect a TB device is to disable the Security Level in UEFI Bios. I presume this is because the relevant service to request user authorisation is not running on the system. By disabling security, the device connects automatically.

This is the same as Jumping Pins 3 to 5 om the Thunderbolt AIC (Add in Card). Without the Thunderbolt 3 Header, no way to set the Memory Aperture nor to properly Enumerate the Device on the Bus. Partial support means only Thunderbolt 3 Native support and no Legacy Thunderbolt 1 or 2 support. Since Memory Aperture cannot be set, suggest only 1 Device otherwise Connect and disconnect issues can occur. So it works, sort of but not completely. Hassle right. Hope this helps!

      Hi Black_HowL 7evin,
Nice to meet You! You need a Motherboard that supports Thunderbolt 3. Not just USB-C. Your Gigabyte Aorus Ultra x570 Motherboard was originally designed to have that support but was removed from production for whatever reason. Notice the spot next to the SATA Connectors... Those 4 dots. You need a Motherboard with that Thunderbolt 3 Header, present.
The X570 Aorus Master (rev. 1.1/1.2) has Thunderbolt 3 support. Whereas, rev. 1.0 of that model does not. Plus You need the Gigabyte Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 AIC.
      www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X570-AORUS-MASTER-rev-11-12#kf
      www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/GC-TITAN-RIDGE-rev-10#kf
There will be one or two settings in that Bios to verify that may need to be turned on. Seems every chipset that supports Thunderbolt 3 is different. That Motherboard may auto recognize the Thunderbolt 3 AIC.
This will give You Bios support. And that will get You Thunderbolt 3 (Native support) Plug and Play plus Thunderbolt 1 and 2 (Legacy support).
We're going to be doing two Thunderbolt 3 Videos with Thunderbolt Audio interfaces soon. One will be with a Universal Audio Thunderbolt 3 interface. Hope that helps! Stay tuned!

Hi@@ILaxative, Perfect! Proof is in the actual product! What I read or could tell, it did not. Even the documentation is sketchy. However, adding the 1394 FireWire card may be problematic. You may have better luck with the 1394 FireWire External Capture Device by using an Adapter to Thunderbolt 3.
If You were to utilize Thunderbolt 3, then we'd have to consider a different Motherboard. Either ASRock or Gigabyte for Thunderbolt 3 support on the Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 card.

      Hi dai Amaro,
Welcome! Great Question! To verify, You have the OC version instead of the Non OC Version? The OC Version does not have the Thunderbolt Add-on card connector which is required for Bios support. If You install a Thunderbolt 3 add in card without Bios support, having that work, is hit or miss since We cannot allocate Memory for Connected Devices. According to MSI Thunderbolt 3 add in card, You would need a different Motherboard. Technology right now has gone to USB4 which incorporates prior Thunderbolt technologies. But to do that would require Motherboard and CPU. And maybe RAM depending upon Chipset. Links below.
Also for best compatibility maintain same brand since every Motherboard Manufacturer uses a different Thunderbolt Connector Pinout.

Hi Franz, That makes two of Us! Feels like we were sold a bill of goods, never delivered! Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Therefore, we all need to contact Gigabyte Support and make a polite request. A function not implemented. I'll do some research and see what the Gigabyte Forums have to offer. Great bunch over there helping thousands on a daily basis!

Looks like, in time, we will get Bios support. When? Only Gigabyte knows! We all need to make a request to get the ball rolling!

"I decided to try anyway as I've seen some people have success. But contrary to other people's experiences, it seems they are suggesting that it will be allowed in future.
Firstly, the Titan-Ridge is installed in the upper PCIe x8 slot, rather than the bottom.
All cables connected. Power, USB header, THB_C header.
I followed these steps to remove any drivers I had.
      1. Disconnect any Thunderbolt 3 devices from the host system (this is done to prevent Windows Update from automatically loading any Thunderbolt drivers).
      2. Right-click on the Windows Start button and select ‘Device Manager’.
      3. Click on ‘View’ from the application menu bar, and click the option ‘Show hidden devices’ (this is necessary because the Thunderbolt controller will not be active if no Thunderbolt devices are connected).
      4. Expand the ‘System Devices’ category. Scroll down until you find the entry for the ‘Thunderbolt Controller’.
      5. Right-click on the ‘Thunderbolt Controller’ entry and select ‘Uninstall device’ from the context menu that appears.
      6. From the ‘Uninstall Device’ window that appears, click to place a check mark within the ‘Delete the driver software for this device’ option.
      7. Click the ‘Uninstall’ button.
      8. Close Device Manager.
      9. Click the search button on the taskbar (looks like a ‘O’) and search for the letters ‘cmd’.
      10. Right-click on the ‘Command Prompt’ search result and select ‘Run as Administrator’ from the context menu. If prompted, enter your Administrator password.
      11. From the Administrative Command Prompt window, enter ‘sc delete nhi’ (without the quotes) and press enter. You should receive a ‘SUCCESS’ indicator. ** Be very careful to type this command correctly ** This command deletes the ‘nhi’ Windows service presently installed on the system.
      12. Close the Administrative Command Prompt window.
      13. Check within the Control Panel -> Applications and Features to see if there are any ‘Thunderbolt Software’ by Intel entries listed. If any our present, uninstall them.
      --------------
Then I decided to try out the DCH Drivers provided by Gigabyte for the Titan Rev 2.0 version, even though I have Rev 1.0
      www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GC-TITAN-RIDGE-rev-20/support#support-dl-driver
Only when the DHC drivers are installed can you install the Thunderbolt Software from the MS Store.
      www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/thunderbolt-control-center/9n6f0jv38ph1?activetab=pivot:overviewtab
Many reviews say they cannot install it or download it from the store. I suspect it may be they didn't have the correct drivers.
REBOOT. In the BIOS I now had an option for Thunderbolt and made sure it was enabled.
      My BIOS version is F4d
With this setup I got the control center working, and it recognized the few thunderbolt drives I had.
I have not managed to test it out with any other devices, especially thunderbolt 3 devices as I only have thunderbolt 2. I was using the Apple T3 to T2 adaptor, which is probably the best one to get.
Hope this helps someone! I was messing around for days trying to get something from this card. A bit frustrating that I had to switch PCIe slots, but I would get a d4 error and it would not boot"
We had experienced the same Results with 2nd x8 Slot. Your Results may vary. Hope all of this helps!

      Thanks for updating us.
Unfortunately, we can not make a confident recommendation to use any Apollo (X4 included) on Ryzen system like this with the Titan Ridge 2.0 TB3 add-on card. Looks like a really nice and beefy PC you got there, but I'm afraid this platform with Apollo remains completely untested for hardware compatibility by our developers and engineers. The vast overwhelming majority of Thunderbolt-supported systems today use purely Intel architecture. We can't make this recommendation for you from an official UA standpoint, but you might be able to find more anecdotal information from other users using similar setups via online forums.
Im hoping there’s someone out there that’s able to confirm that UAx4 and Antelope Zen Tour Synergy Core can work smoothly with Titan Ridge on AMD Ryzen setup.

So for a hub to use a display signal you would have to connect the GPU to the AIC and then connect that AIC to the Hub if you wanted a display signal to come through the hub. When it comes to having a display far away from a PC TB is the best way to do that as we know signal integrity from copper and other metal based cables such as HDMI and DP is nowhere near as reliable at distance as and optical cables. So as in my case I want my PC off my desk and to use a hub I would connect my display to the hub, that hub to the AIC, and the AIC to my GPU to get the best signal strength and integrity for the distance.

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mihai Sava,
You have a misconception about Thunderbolt 3. Thunderbolt was designed for Connectivity! We have to get Thunderbolt 3 working on a Desktop before we can start Connecting Devices. And that's coming up!
1.) A Laptop to Desktop would only be a Network Connection.
      2.) Thunderbolt 3 does 3 things.
      A.) Route Video
      B.) Route Power
      C.) Device Connectivity.
Device Connectivity is the only one that makes sense. We will be showing 2 Audio interfaces and 4 Data Devices. Two of which we have shown and will show again as it relates to another Device newly updated by another Vendor.
To reiterate, a Laptop to Desktop would only be a Network Connection. Sharing Resources through a Docking Station to a Laptop or to a Desktop is either one, not both simultaneously.
Example - CalDigit TS3 Plus is a Docking Station. Whatever Resources are in a Docking Station, those can be shared with either Computer but not both at same time.
      CalDigit TS3 Plus

If the external Thunderbolt Device has a Video card within that box, then that x16 Video card can be shared on x4 PCIe Lanes through Thunderbolt 3. Not ideal but doable. Not practical either. Hope this clarification helps! We will address this in an upcoming Video!

@@BuildOrBuy Hi Gill, Thank you for reply. Please, would you help us to share data from Thunderbolt 3 to external PCI Express on which would be installed an external GPU?

With all of the problems We've had with Thunderbolt Drivers and Firmware, We'll have to agree to disagree on that point. Appreciate Your Comments. Thanks for Watching!

Hi@@TeknikIE, Thank You for taking the time to watch! Thunderbolt has been a bear to make operational. We've been meticulous in Our documentation for that reason.

    Stop saying enumerate. Please.

Hi Fester, How would You define the process? It is what it is. I believe Intel used that term during Our Reseller Training Meetings. And Microsoft echoed those sentiments during Our Discussions about the HAL - Hardware Abstraction Layer during TechNet briefings. We have shortened the syntax from BUS Enumeration since this process occurs on both the Hardware and Software side. Same applies to USB cache when full and USB no longer works. This process has been constant and consistent for some time. For Windows, since Windows 95. Same applies to Thunderbolt devices as devices have to counted and accounted for to read Vendor ID and Device ID. To state all of that gets wordy. We like to keep it simple.
