Also, it makes a huge difference based on what you claim on taxes. Like dependents, marital status, etc.

it’s hard to picture how much money one makes relative to cost of living. For example in CA and NY you get paid more but it is more expensive to live there. How much does a typical 2 bedroom house cost there? Also, a typical 2 bedroom apartment. Just curious.

Right now an average 2 bedroom home according to realtor.com in this area are listed for around 147k and apartments here are averaging at around $800/mo

@@paperclippriestwow that’s cheap. In the Los Angeles area the union fought for higher wages for teachers and I think a starting teacher with only a bachelor’s and no experience will make around 67,000. However, after all the deductions, taxes, etc they will make roughly 4,000 a month. But in LA a 2 bedroom house in a “bad area” (meaning more poverty and crime) is about 500,000 and a 2 bedroom house in a middle class clean suburbs is 700,000 -800,000. There are a lot of nice 3 bedroom homes like you see in the movies with the nice front yard with backyard, but those already are at least 1 million. A 2 bedroom apartment in a nice area is between 2000-3000 and a 2 bedroom in a “bad area” is like 1500-2500. So when I do the math, a beginning teacher will spend only about 30% of their income renting a 2 bedroom in South Carolina and 40% in LA. However, in many districts in CA teachers don’t pay social security as they have their own pension. Also, in my district health, eye, and dental are all covered including family members without deducting anything from my check. Like you can give birth for example and it is fully covered. You just pay the $30 copayment.
