I feel like online schooling is the future of schools because of: the fights in schools, teacher/subs shortages, student disrespect, kids bringing 🔫 to schools, building costs, & the bullying. I’ve been impressed with the quality of teachers I’ve seen at my kids online public school.

I was offered a teaching job from the largest online school in my state, but the school received hundreds (I mean HUNDREDS) of bad reviews from employees and former employees. So, at the last second, I turned down the offer. Even during interview, one of the administrators stated the turnover rate is very high, so I feel like a dodged a bullet on that one. I may just try one more year of in person, and if it does go well, I will apply and try to interview at the other online schools in my state. 👍

I don't think you (or any other ex-teacher) is being selfish. It's about time teachers stop taking the abuse from children, parents, admin, principals, whoever "for the sake of the children" that aren't even your own.

Thank you! I really appreciate your thoughts. I'm in a small town with few opportunities, and on the cusp of earning a preliminary SPED credential. I'm seriously thinking of the remote teaching option. I'm also a homeschool mom of 16 years who used different homeschool charters for my own children, and I taught college classes online for more than a decade. Helps to hear your perspective!

I have to say, as a Chinese English, I teach two classes of students. During the daytime,I teach 80 kids in total English. i have six or seven classes each week. In the evening, I have evening classes three times a week. I have to get to school before 7:00 am in the morning and work until 9:30 pm. ( but in reality I usually get home after 10:00 pm).
I even teach on Saturday morning every week.

Honestly, forbidding cellphones in the classroom should be a law. I can't believe they are even allowed. Of course it's going to be a huge distraction. If I survived all my childhood without cellphones, they can too.

Good for you. Regular classroom teaching is basically little more than crowd control, albeit unarmed crowd control, so hence an exercise in futility. The lecture method of teaching needs to be abolished and the so called teachers converted in tutors supporting automated instruction in which any lecturing is via the electronic connection and not merely being repeated ad nauseam by some hapless teacher who is powerless to impose their will on the poorly behaved stooges we insist upon calling students, an overly optimistic appraisal if ever there was one.

An important question you did not discuss: What happens if your internet connection goes down or is interrupted during teaching? If this is not a problem for you, how is it possible that you always have such a stable connection in order for this virtual teaching to work so well?

I've done both: 25 year firefighter, 40 years teaching. They are both challenging. The thing with being a teacher is that you are always on, no downtime, accountable to everyone, and constantly moving standards of performance and evaluation. You also take your work home with you. You take years to earn back your initial investment of 4-6 years of college. Teaching looks way easier than it actually is. Consider why so many school districts are having to leave the country to find teachers. When they do find teachers from other countries to come to the USA to teach, these new instructors are shocked and appalled at the student behavior and leave as soon as their contract is up.
