It's SO obvious that she's singing her thoughts. The fact that everyone on stage isn't paying attention to what shes saying and the opening line to her song "I wonder what's going on in that pretty little head of yours..." Its kinda REALLY obvious. Anyway, THANK YOU SO SO MUCH JulieWinchester for uploading this!
I love that they had Ariel sing her thoughts during her time on land because I've always wished they could have been expressed in some way in the movie.
It bothers me that people don't understand the fact that "Beyond My Wildest Dreams" occurs in her head. These people don't understand what a soliloquy or a monologue is. They don't understand theatre. They other people can't hear her because she's not saying anything, everything is happening in her head. It's not that hard to understand. This is theatre, not a movie. They have to change stuff. Why would they make her mute?
This was the pre-Broadway version and it looks like they made some changes to this scene in later versions, to clarify this very point. I'm playing Grimsby in the current public version and he is the one who leads the scene, not the lead maid as shown above. Immediately before Ariel begins to sing, Grimsby is standing off to the side and says, " I cannot help wondering what she's thinking. I'd give a farthing or two to hear her thoughts." , then she starts singing... her thoughts.
What I find even more ridiculous is that people would even need to read it to realize why. What director would have the main character be silent throughout the second half of the play, especially when said character is being played by someone as talented as Sierra Boggess.
Dialogue: "I wonder what goes on in that silly head of hers." Dumb youtubers: "HEY SHE'S NOT SUPPOSED TO SING!" Lyrics: "Just stands there gawking, weird how she's not talking." Dumb youtubers: "SHE SHOULDN'T BE SPEAKING!." I don't think the complainers are even actually listening to the song. They just want to complain.
I always wondered why she never just wrote it all down. "I'm the girl who saved you, but I'm a mermaid and had to give away my voice to a witch in order to become human, and now you have to kiss me so I can get my voice back and be human forever."
This whole song is fabulous! one of my favorite additions to the original and Sierra Boggess killed it!!! I also JUST REALIZED WHO HEIDI BLICKENSTAFF IS AND I LOVE HER!!! i get to play Carlotta in my church’s production and I’m so happy to see it was originated by a beautiful actress!!!!
To anyone else who thinks to ask the question, Carlotta says "I wonder what's going on in that little head of yours" right before she leaves. So it is most likely her thought process.
i LOVE this song. i have the sound track but i've never seen it before till now. this just makes me love it EVEN more! also, one day, i WILL play ursula. fact.
Her singing is non-diegetic which means what she is "singing" is external to the narrative. We can probably imagine that she is saying or "singing" all this in her mind but the audience needs to hear it and as this is a musical, what better way than for her to sing it. Beautiful voice!
I don't know why more people aren't talking about that Les Poissons scene. It made me giggle a little too much and I bet that actor was having fun with that role.
Are people still asking that question just to tick us off?! It's self-explanitory. Carlotta says "Ican't help but wonder. What's going on in that pretty little head of hers?" Ariel then goes into song. She's letting teh audience in on her inner thoughts. That's all there is to it.
Is really means from beyond my wildest dreams between Arie's dream just to live like a human being is very hard to understand what is going on with her. Even though people have big changes because there are many people have something but Arie is actually a mermaid this is a beautiful musical show and story is about her and mermaid family and humans from generation
lol a while back when i first learned that disney would make a little mermaid Broadway show i was all how can se sing when shes mute and being into stage acting i realized inner monologue or her own feelings or thoughts lol
@JulieWinchester You know the whole Le possions song just makes you questions Louie's sanity and you don't if you know if you should laugh, cry, piss your pants in fear or throw up.
@cowtowngrl Besides, the Lady who introduces the song says "I can't help but wonder, what's going on in that pretty little head of yours..." It's like introducing the song as her thoughts or aka a soliloquy.
I also wondered. I know the sea creatures can write because Sebastian wrote symphonies. Eric was also the kind of guy who would believe in mermaids. Of course, Disney wouldn't have had any drama in the story then...
@pokemonumbreon1 I'm thinking they made Gisele look like Ariel for "Enchanted" to add to the parallels between the previous Disney movies and "Enchanted". But yes, she looks like Amy Adams.
I wondered that too. I think that first, there would have been no drama intensity with Ursula charming Eric (in the movie), and second, what were the chances that he believed her ? He would probably think she was crazy...
Do we have to put in caps! Carlotta says at 0:53-0:55 "I wonder what's goiing on in that pretty little head of hers." It's pretty simple. "This song is her INNER THOUGHTS! I don't know how I can make that easier to understand.
you know, i didn't get this in the movie either, why didn't she just write down what happened to her so eric would know that she'd just lost her voice but she really was the girl he was looking for? There was no stipulation against that in the contract...
I don't get why some people find it confusing that she is singing while she has no voice, this is a musical, and I agree with the description, the main singer can't stay mute for half of the musical!
@mithrakrishnan1 she doesn't. these are just her thoughts. Carlotta says "I wonder what's going on in that pretty little head." this is what she's thinking. she can't talk, well out loud, in her head she can though. =]
It's SO obvious that she's singing her thoughts. The fact that everyone on stage isn't paying attention to what shes saying and the opening line to her song "I wonder what's going on in that pretty little head of yours..." Its kinda REALLY obvious. she's so adorable on this scene... she's like a real life disney princess
I love that they had Ariel sing her thoughts during her time on land because I've always wished they could have been expressed in some way in the movie.

THANK YOU! Somebody of stage intelligence!
yes. someone who understands.
finally somone who has knowledge

i agree
Ariel is so cute when she's looking around and freaking out! 😍
What I find even more ridiculous is that people would even need to read it to realize why. What director would have the main character be silent throughout the second half of the play, especially when said character is being played by someone as talented as Sierra Boggess.

mww2821 or they just don't understand theatre
Ikr! Also "I'd scream if I only could." It's all spelled out pretty clearly for them.
if you have to ask why she's singing when she's supposed to be mute right now, musical theatre is not for you...
The chef is hilarious with his evil laughter.
You mean Louis?
I always wondered why she never just wrote it all down. "I'm the girl who saved you, but I'm a mermaid and had to give away my voice to a witch in order to become human, and now you have to kiss me so I can get my voice back and be human forever."
maybe the merfolk didn't know how to write?
She signed her name. She was literate
Me toooo
probably didn’t know how to write. i mean hell she didn’t even know what a fork was. i’m not sure if they have literacy classes in the sea
They wouldn't believe her
I love how Ariel has this child like humor...
WHAT?!?!?! The chef isn't chasing Sebastian? Boo!
+Daisy Montano He chases him in the reprise don't worry.
shut up u
Daisy Montano it's me or the chef was singing be our guest
This is pre-broadway
Sierra is so adorable in this song! I adore her!
Not to mention it's MUSICAL THEATRE. There's this beautiful thing called "willing suspension of disbelief".
Those are some crazy skirts her attendants are wearing!! LOL
I love how she sounds almost exactly like Jodi Benson.
This whole song is fabulous! one of my favorite additions to the original and Sierra Boggess killed it!!! I also JUST REALIZED WHO HEIDI BLICKENSTAFF IS AND I LOVE HER!!! i get to play Carlotta in my church’s production and I’m so happy to see it was originated by a beautiful actress!!!!
i really like how they gave sierra parts to sing what's going on in ariel's head.
THE CHEF IS SOOOO PERFECT
Those skirts remind me of that mouse in the Thumbelina movie from the 90's ^^
McFlyLover92 omg you're right!!
Awful film ,but Jodi Benson was thumbelina 's voice
I love Ariel's pink dress here!
To anyone else who thinks to ask the question, Carlotta says "I wonder what's going on in that little head of yours" right before she leaves. So it is most likely her thought process.
i LOVE this song. i have the sound track but i've never seen it before till now.
this just makes me love it EVEN more! also, one day, i WILL play ursula. fact.
I feel bad for saying this, but I absolutely hate those puffy skirts that Carlotta and the maids are wearing
Musical Masterpieces ya they look like apples 😬
I thought they were chickens… I was so confused 😂 they look like weird chicken characters to me and idk y
Yeah, they don’t even look like dresses. It’s an odd design.
Me too
Lol I think Jack Black would make a decent Chef Louis!
Sierra looks so adorable as Ariel in Beyond My Wildest Dreams!
I LOVE THE MAID'S OUTFITS! They are HILARIOUS!!!!
Her singing is non-diegetic which means what she is "singing" is external to the narrative. We can probably imagine that she is saying or "singing" all this in her mind but the audience needs to hear it and as this is a musical, what better way than for her to sing it. Beautiful voice!

Love that Ariel is trying to show off her "human smarts".
I love how he threw the bones in the pot.
Are people still asking that question just to tick us off?! It's self-explanitory. Carlotta says "Ican't help but wonder. What's going on in that pretty little head of hers?" Ariel then goes into song. She's letting teh audience in on her inner thoughts. That's all there is to it.
I think it was wonderful of them to cast Lou Costello to play Louie. :)
I love her 'WHO KNOWS' its so funny and cute
I love this scene cuz she makes me think of a kid in a candy store she is so cute in this scene
Sierra is just so darn cute!
they did great on the chef and i love the song Beyond my wildest dreams
I love that she's trying to show off her "human smarts" when really she's just making herself look even more odd. :D
I really don't understand why people don't understand she is singing her thoughts.. I worry about people.
Haha I did the little mermaid jr. And I was Ariel... We used flower inside of the pipe. And it was all over me for the rest of the play lol.
OMG YES!!! I HAVENT SEEN THAT MOVIE IN YEARS!!!!
So glad they kept this song too. XD "Then you rub some salt in! MWHAHAHAHAHA!"
Great performance
*head in her hands* does no one read the description and commentaries before asking this question?
HEE HEE HEE HAW HAW HAW
Ariel is soo beautiful 😍😊
I think the word you're all searching for is sililoquy. Ariel was singing a sililoquy.
Soliloquy
WAIT A MINUTE IS ME OR THE SONG THAT THE CHEF IS SINGING IS BE OUR GUEST ?!?!
Scar TLK be our guest was a hommage of sorts to le poissons
Is really means from beyond my wildest dreams between Arie's dream just to live like a human being is very hard to understand what is going on with her. Even though people have big changes because there are many people have something but Arie is actually a mermaid this is a beautiful musical show and story is about her and mermaid family and humans from generation
shes never been on land before...she's a kid in a candystore
LOL I LOVE the last part!!
lol a while back when i first learned that disney would make a little mermaid Broadway show i was all how can se sing when shes mute and being into stage acting i realized inner monologue or her own feelings or thoughts lol
Sometimes i really wish I was a big big man so i could play the part of the chef ...its sooo amazing
Djurdjix Radic you could just wear a fat suit, that's what they do in the show, that's not real fat
Have you thought maybe that was intentional? Giving them the subconscious distinction of being gossipy "hens"?
I love when Ariel says wow! it makes me laugh
@07:12-07:29
I still laughed at that scene.
I was like "What?! You never seen a girl comb her hair with a fork before?"
Please people, read the description before asking why she's singing! It's been asked and answere time and time again!
Aw...they don't have the Chef chase Sebastian...=P
Daniel Selk the hat is supposed to be sebastian
Daniel Selk its in the reprise
4:43-4:44 Me when i see my school bullies chase me
@JulieWinchester You know the whole Le possions song just makes you questions Louie's sanity and you don't if you know if you should laugh, cry, piss your pants in fear or throw up.
@cowtowngrl Besides, the Lady who introduces the song says "I can't help but wonder, what's going on in that pretty little head of yours..." It's like introducing the song as her thoughts or aka a soliloquy.
So far this was the best part out of it all
I find 'Les Poissons' quite similar to 'Be our Guest' in Beauty and the Beast... Only the instrumentla of course.
@surferdude3451 She's singing her thoughts. It is confusing but the line from the head made before she sings gives it away some.
Loving the pink shoes!
I wondered that too. I think that first, there would have been no drama intensity with Ursula charming Eric (in the movie), and second, what were the chances that he believed her ? He would probably think she was crazy...
@TBabiiex33 did you read descriptions? "It's her thoughts....and the main siger can't say anything during half of the musical..."
Ariel is hot
Do we have to put in caps! Carlotta says at 0:53-0:55 "I wonder what's goiing on in that pretty little head of hers." It's pretty simple. "This song is her INNER THOUGHTS! I don't know how I can make that easier to understand.
i half expected her to start singing thats how you know from enchanted
I wonder how are the shows are now ? 🤨🧐
"Zoot alors! I have meesed one!" My favorite line! XD
Love the maids costumes
ALL OF THE CARLOTTA'S. ALL OF THEM.
I am insanely jealous of those servants dresses
I'm playing Chef Louis in Little Mermaid Jr. right now and this video was very helpful...thank you!
She is sooooo adorible!!!!!!!!!
@HahaToasted I don't know... but they remind me of hens... I think it's the way it bounces, like a cartoon chicken. Could just be me lol.
Les Poissons or Be Our Guest?
you know, i didn't get this in the movie either, why didn't she just write down what happened to her so eric would know that she'd just lost her voice but she really was the girl he was looking for? There was no stipulation against that in the contract...
she is saying whats in her mind at the time
Sometimes the music sounds like beauty and the beast
iam trying out for cheff lois in my school production of little mermaid tomorrow, widh me luck!
Did you get it? I’m here for charecter research
Does anyone else hear the tune to "Be Our Guest" when the chef is singing at 6:08?
sierra's just awesome!
i loved how he "rubbed some Zalt een!"
The next time I cook fish I am going to get salt and do an evil laugh.
Since I am playing the role of sebastian in our musical whenever I hear le poisons it scares me...;)
I don't get why some people find it confusing that she is singing while she has no voice, this is a musical, and I agree with the description, the main singer can't stay mute for half of the musical!
i loved how he "rubbed some Zalt een!" 4:20 - 6:45 FTW
@Forever4Him Is till say the evil laugh in this version is a little over the top
most probably she being used to the writing implements of the sea wouldn't have understood what the quills and things of ink were used for
Well, this is a musical. She's singing out her inner thoughts.
be our guest!! (Y)
@mithrakrishnan1
she doesn't. these are just her thoughts. Carlotta says "I wonder what's going on in that pretty little head." this is what she's thinking. she can't talk, well out loud, in her head she can though. =]
"I wonder what's going on in that pretty little head of yours..."
cue Ariel's mind is talking.
@CalliBabii Remember Ursula said it had to be "the kiss of true love"
@kopec82 it would be abit odd if the main character didn't sing anything in the entire second act!
what song is that??
i like it
