What games would you like to see us take on for DF Retro Play? Games that might be too short or even too strange for a full DF Retro episode? Let us know!
I would absolutely love to see you guys s̶u̶f̶f̶e̶rplay anything from the Valis series! Preferably the (horrible) first game on PC98/MSX, or if you want to play an actual good game the remake on PC Engine would be cool too!
It would be great to see DF Retro play Ultima Underworld, the game that inspired John Carmack to rewrite the Wolfenstein engine for Doom and inspired Elder Scrolls. It's such a great achievement of early 3D and would suit the channel extremely well.
I really enjoyed this. Very glad I'm able to show my support for DF Retro through Patreon. It would be great to see a DF Retro play through of Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Revenge of Shinobi (Megadrive) or New Zealand Story.
I love seeing actual gameplay and to just hang out. The more curated retro videos are great, but those are like the highlight reel at the end of a sports season with all of the drama of looking back --- it's important to remember that games are played, the moment to moment action thereof and the conversations they can strike up with friends are what make looking back worth it.
At 44:07 you start a very important discussion. Modern games are overwhelming. I tried to start Cyberpunk and the sheer amount of things going on, dialogues, loot, menus, skills, etc made me feel like my mom trying to use her smartphone. I'm 33 now, the problem is probably just my age, but I wish people would discuss that more.
i literally had the same thought everytime i got out of a car and saw a manhole as a small kid in nyc lol i def never looked through the holes and called donatellos name out like they were down there. never
12:42 according to Wikipedia: She was credited under the pseudonym James Banana for her work on the Nintendo Entertainment System version of the game. This pseudonym was a pun of the name James Bernard, the film composer of the 1958 film Dracula
Mega man broke more nes controllers in my household than any other game. Controller sales in the 80s were up upon each game release. I still get mad thinking about those games.
The last boss first phase reminds me of Modok from marvel comics 🤔 Thanks homies for a great video and i"am happy to be part of the DF retro community 💕
Bergsala is also part of the reason why the rest of Europe have weird modified NES-controllers that don't work in US or Scandinavian NES-consoles. Bergsala was first in Europe to import Nintendo products and when it was later released in the rest of Europe Nintendo put some extra diodes in the other european NES-consoles and controllers that make it so that people can't buy the Scandinavian controllers. I think the UK/European controllers work in US and Scandinavian NES-consoles tho but not the other way around without modifying either the controllers or controller ports. I found this out when I bought an RGB-modded NES from UK and tried to use controllers I bought locally.
i prefer the more analytical and historical df retro style of videos over this of a conversation about a game while it's being played live. I don't mind this being a separate df retro series but i prefer the older style of videos with more of a deep dive in to the ins and out of the game's functions, development and history with gameplay in the background.
Power Blade was one of a handful of games I got with a second hand NES as a kid. The music is very memorable, and Audi is doing a great job with the platforming. Those some of those jumps can require brutal accuracy. Other shout-outs from my personal collection... Kabuki: Quantum Fighter, Captain Skyhawk, Super Mario Bros 2 & 3, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Mr. Gimmick was released in Finland also. Some of my friends even had it, bought new from a local store. Very rare here too and probably the most expensive PAL NES game.
"Power blade" was my favourite NES game in the early and mid 90's, along with "Streets of rage 3" and "Alien soldier" for the SEGA Mega drive 2. As a young boy I was able to beat the game a few times without taking a single damage while playing it on a 16" Sony Black Trinitron TV and Micro genius 502 (one of the many NES clones, which actually had really nice D-pad, responsive action buttons and 3,5 mm jack for headphones). I used to memorize every segment of the game and it was easy for me. However, when I tried to play it again a couple of years ago, the input lag of the modern TV's (mine is about 35 milliseconds for 4K and FullHD signal, and even slower for old consoles using AV cable) was too intrusive and obviously the game felt less responsive and much harder than what it should be on a proper CRT TV.
I remember seeing this game in Nintendo Power and thinking it was the coolest looking game in the world. Would pour over the article and pictures over and over again, but never owned the game. Gonna finally give it a shot after watching a bit of this. Thanks for the reminder on my 30yr old backlog here ^-^
I feel like you were testing the waters here a little bit to see if we'd want to see Richard play a retro game and the answer is 100% YES. But this was very entertaining to watch regardless 👌
Not only the main character in the game, Nova, looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger (both on the cover and the title screen, which also happened to "Power blade 2"), but that enemy that looks like a giant head on the wall is very reminiscent to Vladimir Lenin, the Soviet Russian politician. In fact, the title screens of "Power blade" and "Power blade 2" were directly inspired by "The Terminator" and "Terminator 2: Judgement day".
Can hear the Castlevania similarities in some of the tracks. It's amazing how many of the great Japanese game composers are women. Far more women than in "Western" studios, and many are legendary. But at the same very few Japanese women (any?) were involved in game design, so they seem to have been restricted to just the music. Historically at least, I don't know if that has changed.
I have a strange nostalgia for this game even though I've never played it. There was a combined review and first level walkthrough of it in the first issue I ever read of the Swedish game magazine "Nintendo-magasinet" and it looked really cool and I can still vividly remember it.
7:10 Surprised that S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team (Final Mission) wasn't included as part of the discussion. It was a side-scrolling shooter that was released in America a few months after Shadow of the Ninja.
35:22 so I looked at some Alfred Chicken NES footage and that first stage made from cheese I think is a good tribute to how artists could work with such limited hardware, it's as impressive as the way the wall has been shown here 32:55 to be torn.
Kinuyo also composed Mega Man X3's music. Highlights are the opening stage theme, zero's theme, gravity beetle, and blast hornet. I found this game after being obsessed with Mega Man games. Love it.
Great video guys 😁 Fond memories of Power Blade although 8 year old me found it really tough! If you're going to stick with the NES for a bit, how about a video on Low G Man? Or maybe Blue Shadow?
Those Yapon clamshell cases are very sought after by collectors here in Finland. My friend bought an old NES rental unit with some games from a video store's clearout sale. He has Zelda and Mega Man in the Yapon clamshells and those are quite expensive.
Looked it up, very impressive, but wouldn't call it a "demake" since it's visually more complex Edit: guess I was looking at Spectrum Next footage. Yeah, that regular spectrum version is pretty primitive but still impressive
In terms of story, Delta's Shadow is treated as a (unofficial) third part of the Power Blade saga. I guess you can do that on forgotten IPs, without worrying about lawyers going after you (?). Still, fans of both PB 1 & 2 should try it.
From what I can gather about Bergsala's businesses at the time, the central export was from the Swedish warehouses and then the regional offices in Norway and Finland could get copies as well, but on a technical level it was published in Sweden.
@@PC98_Audi That's very interesting. I wonder why Sunsoft went through with this rather bizarre decision, they can't have sold that many PAL copies after all.
Wily Wars DF Retro would be great! Seems like there’d be a lot of interesting stuff to look at with all the subtle changes it made from the NES versions (plus the weird Journey to the West bonus stuff)
I remember playing a copy of this a friend had & accidently discovering you could cheese some of the bosses by spamming the grenade button as you entered the boss room.
Shatter Hand doesn't have and extra stage or more content over Solbrian. One stage is different in each one. Shatter Hand has a submarine level versus Solbrain's Circus level.
Thank you for playing this game, I really enjoyed. Next time please, play Metal Warriors for the SNES, that game was a masterpiece from Konami. Greetings.
I dont know why but the music to Power Blade reminds me of Snkes revenge on nes. Definately play Megaman 1-3 ,castlevania 3 and Holy Diver. Keep these retros coming btw.
"Lär dig bemästra det urgamla vapnet i ett spännande framtidsäventyr" 🤣 I just can't take Swedish hype-copy seriously. Everything just sounds silly in Swedish. Although it's not as bad as Danish or Norwegian 😉 It translates roughly as "Learn to master the ancient weapon in an exciting future adventure!"

Maybe Do Re Me Fantasy? But honestly I like John's sensibilities, thats why I joined DF retro patreon
GHOSTHUNTER PS2 PLEASE ! the game was a technical marvel on PS2 with incredible poly count for characters and effects never seen on a PS2 !
Treasure Master
It would be great to see DF Retro play Ultima Underworld, the game that inspired John Carmack to rewrite the Wolfenstein engine for Doom and inspired Elder Scrolls. It's such a great achievement of early 3D and would suit the channel extremely well.
The thumbnails just keep getting better and better
Test my mods.
Gabe Newell is Watching.
Where's Richard? We've been deceived.
I thought they'd force Richard play this game lol
@@shaunjamesborg I noticed it too lol
clickbait
That thumbnail lol! Good grief who could resist clicking
Best… thumbnail… ever!
That thumbnail is pure clickbait, Audi. It's excellent.
I really enjoyed this. Very glad I'm able to show my support for DF Retro through Patreon. It would be great to see a DF Retro play through of Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Revenge of Shinobi (Megadrive) or New Zealand Story.
Yes
Had a great lunch watching you guys...hahaha.
Thanks for the awesome work.
I love seeing actual gameplay and to just hang out.

Love the increase in personality from the DF crew
The question marks before John introduced himself 😂

That's a huge reason why I cant get into Monster Hunter or any online MMOs. Too much shit to keep track of.
loving these Retro videos! keep up the good job
i literally had the same thought everytime i got out of a car and saw a manhole as a small kid in nyc lol i def never looked through the holes and called donatellos name out like they were down there. never
This was a really nice, relaxing, informative episode. Well done!
I hope John can feature Cyber Shadow some day
Judging by the thumbnail Audi is trying so hard to get sacked 😂😂
12:42 according to Wikipedia:

I'd like to see a DF Retro celebration of Treasure. They've been out of the game for a bit but contributed so much and it would be awesome to see.
perfect, very nice df retro and good sound quality 🥰🥰🥰
It's almost surreal to see Swedish Yapon boxes in a DF video!
Superhäftigt måste jag säga!
Tack så mycket! Jag gillar verkligen dom der Yapon kassetterna.
This was a very fun video. Thanks!
Mega man broke more nes controllers in my household than any other game. Controller sales in the 80s were up upon each game release. I still get mad thinking about those games.
A true example of a hidden gem. I was aware of this game back in the day but never seriously sat down and played through it until recently.
Love this style video!
The last boss first phase reminds me of Modok from marvel comics 🤔
Thanks homies for a great video and i"am happy to be part of the DF retro community 💕
The thumbnail its so rad. I mean 90's rad.

68 people werent born when this was released, and are really upset about it
this is my favorite appearance of everyone's favorite DF editor, ???? ????????
Is it just be or are the background tiles not lined up at all 19:23 ?

Hey, a mention of my copypasta at 16:00! Nice!
How rude of John to not introduce himself before his title card had to tell us who he is
wait is richard the thumbnail? but not even in the stream?

Bergsala is such a crazy story so you should make a DF Retro thing about them...
I have some ideas!
I feel like you were testing the waters here a little bit to see if we'd want to see Richard play a retro game and the answer is 100% YES.
But this was very entertaining to watch regardless 👌
Are we just going to let that Crazy Frog with Richard's face photoshoped on, go by without comments? We are? Ok then, carry on...
Music still holds up! Just as good as I remembered.
I need to hear Richard say "Taito Titles" 3 times fast.
oh, this is a blast from the past. I forgot this game existed even though I must have spent so much time playing it
and the music is so good!
That thumbnail...
I cant

Where is Witchard?
Big fan of that Natsume trilogy as you can see from my profile pic! Great to see this game here

Funny I have this in my NES rom collection even though I don't remember downloading it.
Man the nostalgia levels and ,music even though I have never played it. Please post more nes games
Didn't play this one but had a blast with Shatterhand too
15:45 Felt that in my stomach !!!
Great game. This was the last NES game I bought as a kid before I got my SNES
16:18 That's totally a Charizard! :D
Loved this game as a kid!
love the aspect ratio you guys went with. TRUE PIXEL

I've never heard of this game. Looks fun. I'll look for it in my gigantic rom collection and slap it onto my Vita. Shatter Hand is incredible btw.
18:50 Actually the first time I heard that Mr. Gimmick was only released in Sweden, I assumed our Scandinavian brothers also got it!

I always thought the health pickup was a stack of pancakes, never even thought of them as burgers.
Seems like a pretty good game that me and many others missed because it was released while the SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis was all the rage.
Great game with awesome soundtrack!
one of the very best ost from the NES
I guess I know who was the one that made the video cover...
I think it's safe to say that thumbnail is Rich.
Shatter Hand doesn't have and extra stage or more content over Solbrian.

I have some plans for that game! Really interesting game from Lucasarts, though as you said published by Konami.
Was hoping for some Virtua Fighter 5 coverage this week.
Ha! I was wondering when I heard the first track if the composer had worked on early Castlevania. So excellent!
16:54 OH ZE GAME MIT ZE BOOMERANG ONT ARNOLD? lol!
This is one of the best NES games hands down. Should be as popular as Mario
I dont know why but the music to Power Blade reminds me of Snkes revenge on nes. Definately play Megaman 1-3 ,castlevania 3 and Holy Diver. Keep these retros coming btw.
OK that makes sense. I was thinking it didn't look anything like Arnie ;)
Wild guns is an amazing game
Came here thinking you guys were gonna force Richard to play the game :(
You guys should take a look at Dead Space in 2021, the game held up pretty well specially in 4k.
17:52 Almost correctly pronounced! BERGSALA!
Concerning Burgers: Merv Burgers from River City Ransom!
"Lär dig bemästra det urgamla vapnet i ett spännande framtidsäventyr" 🤣 I just can't take Swedish hype-copy seriously. Everything just sounds silly in Swedish. Although it's not as bad as Danish or Norwegian 😉
It translates roughly as "Learn to master the ancient weapon in an exciting future adventure!"
I think it even said "urspännande". spännande was not enough apparently
Just go all the way and call it DFRP
Can u guys show off milons secret castle and gauntlet?!?!! That would be amazing! Way underrated
Please do a DF Retro for E-Swat for Sega Genesis/Megadrive. Loved that game.
This is false advertisement. I expected to see Rich in the macho man glasses.
"OoH YEAH!!".
Great game it is
wizball c-64
I heard somewhere that Schwarzenegger tried to sue because of this cover until it was revealed who it really was. Don't know if that's apocryphal.
Now stranger, tell me, who are you?
Retro Chad the game. :D
Sega Saturn stuff please by the guy who was around at the time :)
