Why Casey Neistat’s Story Formula is So Dangerous

  • Life is complex. It can feel aimless or overwhelming. ... ENTER STORIES: clarity & purpose that fits the shape of our impulses. (Casey Neistat's videos are a textbook example of story's power).
    But stories can cage us too. There's a way out: to turn our life into stories of which we are both the character & the director.
    Big shoutout to Michelle Jia for key edits!

    Loved the setup, especially the pace and editing, really felt like a Casey Nesitat video! Really like the ideas as well. Stories are powerful in organizing, directing the thoughts, actions in our lives and that of humanity as a whole. They focus our energies, simplify things, and bring structure / purpose in our lives. At the same time, using them without being careful can lead to dangerous oversimplifications.
    But felt the rest of the video got a bit flat! Think it was that the next few parts were more telling than showing, were bit wordier, and the energy / pace both between scenes (editing) and in the scene (action) was very different from the setup.
    Perhaps it's about finding the right style in narration that fits with overall vibe of the video.
    anyways great vid!

      Thanks so much for these reflections & feedback, Lance! I think you're right: the video did devolve into talking about an idea, rather than showing it in a visual way. I needed your advice back then!
      Looks like you're on your own storytelling and vlogging adventure yourself! Looking forward to the stories you'll tell :D

    Most Casey style video outside his channel, so many casey angles, cuts, tropes. He's definitely got the runs on the board though, somehow even though this was a casey length, it felt longer. Maybe it's just that it became too meta? Still, in awe of the research, effort and creativity.

      Thanks! Yeah, looking back on this with more videos under my belt, I agree it does feel like it drags a bit. I think part of that is because I wrote the script on my own & shot it on impulse, and then my creative director Michelle Jia had to come in after and try to help me tighten it up. Since then, I've worked on really workshoping the script till its tight *before* I shoot. I worked really closely with Michelle on my last video, on MrBeats. Curious if it feels better paced to you!

    Whoever is trying to learn story structures, I'd also recommend kurt vonneguts shape of stories, it's absolutely brilliant and drove all his books.
    And also have a look at the creators of south park. They gave a tiny lecture about how they write their episodes. And it's also absolutely brilliant.
    They're both on youtube

    • @itsdavidmora
      @itsdavidmora  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Appreciate it! You read my mind: I actually have both of those queued up for a future video all about story :D
      What's fascinating is that (perhaps you've read it but) there's a research paper that analyzed a corpus of famous novels, and actually validated many of Vonnegut's shapes!
      What I like about the South Park structure is that Nicky Case pointed out that it also applies to learning:

      @@itsdavidmora oops sorry to have spoiled those videos. Keenly waiting for them now since you’ll probably break it down better.
      I haven’t read that paper but I’m really curious now. Vonnegut is so good, they made a really cool documentary on him as well which is very very very good. Highly recommended.
      But and therefore is just so versatile a technique man. Love it. Thanks for sharing that video.

    You make it to the point and the outline is something you will see and a lot in copywriting and branding industry:"MAKE IT ALL ABOUT 'YOUR AUDIENCE' NOT ABOUT HOW WE ARE GREET OR DIFFERENT"👍👏👏
    It's the "YOU CENTRED" approach.
    You are an advanced user of this approach, and this is why I like and comment on all your videos to make youtube algorithms recommend me to more folks like you.❤
    TH-cam ALGORITHMS RECOMMEND ME more videos like this on how to structure and build a story that capture the attention and also make an emotional connection with my audience and then engaged while I'm telling the story.
    💢💢I want to ask you a question: Why did you make yourself to the exteme left i feel like you're making my eye only track your face not any thing else ?

    • @itsdavidmora
      @itsdavidmora  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for this helpful feedback! I'm very much still trying to learn to balance "quickness" with "clarity", and your critique is encouraging me to look for opportunities to really slow down a bit & make things clearer! @@itsdavidmora Maybe I'm the issue. I sometimes watch YT vids without paying my full attention. Your edits are great and youre really good at telling a story in a interesting way. Maybe this wasn't perfectly fitted video for me to watch while doing other stuff.
