I saw John Mayer a few months back and he said: “I kept trying to hurry up an get this done then that done and on and on. Then I realized that to hope for things to be done or over is really just hoping for less time.” Think about that? Don’t we really hope for the most time we can get? Wise words from a young man that opened the eyes of this 58 year old. Still working on it. Cheers!

Thanks so much for these little clips of knowledge Guthrie. I love the smokies glad you had a great time there. Agreed it's best to space apart the booze so we don't get into a habit of drinking it too often. Drinking a few litres of water every day feels great. Top tip though when you do have a drink, afterwards, before going to sleep, have a large glass of water. It rehydrates you and lowers any headache or negative feelings the next day. Cheers from London, hope you see you play on this side of the pond someday!!! Plenty of my guitar playing mates here know you and would come and watch your trio!!

Dude I can totally freaking relate, I've started a practice of leaving my phone home and turned off Friday through Sunday.

Welcome back G! Thanks for all the heartfelt words my friend. Means a lot. So much of our precious time flies by with trivial worries, I've checked myself many times. Many thanks for all you have kindly shared with us out here. Let's keep plugging along playing and living life to the fullest.

When you said windshield wiper, it brought back a memory of the best playing mechanics tip ever. Guy said to me, all you do to keep time, is keep the right hand moving like a windshield wiper, and never stop. All the left hand does is squeeze and release. Even if the left misses the chord grip you stay in time and get a rhythmic chunka chunka. Exactly what you are saying.

Those colored guitars. I remember all the colorful and crazy body shapes of heavy metal guitars in the 80's, like the Dean models.
They looked like giant muskie lures. Just needed to put some big-ass treble hooks on them.

Every day is a gift - it’s up to us what we do with it … time is precious, so it’s best not to waste it. That doesn’t mean we should push ourselves to do as much as possible all the time (that’ll probably just lead to burnout) but to think about what’s really important and be thankful for the good things and good people we have in our lives (whether in person, or on TH-cam!) and work at being the best we can be …

I loved your noodling at first, I always wish there was tab for some of your noodling- especially today. I think I maybe finally able to afford some of your private lessons, so I am going look into that. Your list was fun :-) I guess I leaned something about Amp speakers from you today also. BTW if your ever in the Pacific Northwest, specifically here in WA state. You would fall in love with the mountains here. Try and spend some time hiking around the Mount Rainier area, also the Chinook and White pass areas - its truly magical. :-)

Thanks Guthrie! What you said in the beginning reminded me of a meeting I once had with some of my suppliers at work. They told me when you get above 40, you just don't care anymore and you have the 'fuck it' attitude that you are referencing to. Indeed still meaning you care, but just lay back a bit more and watch it from a distance sometimes if you understand what I mean. Actually just like you said :). I'm almost 39, so I can't wait to get to that point! Maybe I'll just start today ;).
Thanks for all the great guitar video's of course! I play a lot and your video's brought my playing to another level and it gives me so much extra stuff to learn. You make me wanna learn! Instead of just noodling the same old patterns that I've done for years. Finally I know a bit more where these come from.

But I agree it’s about be happy and not getting caught up with life because it can be daunting enough but things have a way of working themselves out and everything just falls into place. Lovin' your energy Mr GT. You certainly have hit as something we all could use more...big doses of thankfulness making it to this day, it could be worse. As i have heard, "every day above the ground is a good day". And as you say, it doesn't mean just throw up our hands up in dispair....balance. Your lists are a hoot, and not necessarily everyone's lists, but you had me laughing about not putting on other pants until you are told....what a hoot. Thanks for all your real and honest sharing.

Hi Guthrie - I've been a 60's Marshall and 50s tweed man up until about 6 months ago when I got a real '65 BFDR. Never new how much I needed reverb in my life - lol ...although to be fair, I still love my real '67 18w marshall combo, and my used to own '57 vibrolux.
BTW - I got a "Model A" celestian from Nashville amp service - Jeremy who worked on my BLDR suggested it and it sounds terrific with it.

Hey Guthrie. I dig the Jimmy Reed rhythms. Classic stuff. Great advice, although I have stepped into the amp modeling world. I know you are more of a traditionalist, but some of the modelers are really good and finding good amp techs is becoming a challenge where I live. Love your videos and stories. Getting off social media, for a while, and being in nature is good for soul 😎

Again, a solid gold classic from GT! So much to dig into, not just guitar stuff but all the honest, open and heartfelt stuff you share too man. I’m getting it, from the other side of the world 👍 as James Lee Burke’s most famous character Dave Robicheaux says, there’s a shortened version of The Serenity Prayer, which is “fuck it” - works for me! Here’s some questions:
    - how do you approach playing with band members, bass , drums etc?
    - what are your tips for getting good at hybrid picking?
    - I know you love good amps and guitars, but what’s the cheapest good gear you’d recommend for beginners?
    - acoustic guitars for live performance - pickup or mic?
    - when will we see you play a Les Paul?
    - when are you coming Down Under to Australia?
    Cheers man! Tim

Wow, great words couldn’t say it better myself. Gratitude is where it’s at. I have a pretty decent following on Facebook but . Can’t draw flies on Instagram.! I’ve learned to be grateful for what I have and I mean my guitars and gear too. I was approached by a label in Nashville , and couldn’t come to terms on a development deal. I think I’m just too old for that right now. I already had a deal about 30 years ago with a major and may be if that didn’t happen, I would’ve went with it. I beat myself up about my decision, but I know it is right. Thanks for your Content and your words of wisdom! You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way.

  • @jamesemerson4102
    @jamesemerson4102 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great video as always! With setups on guitars I have become annoyingly picky and simply cannot get on with certain fret sizes and certain setups. Over the years there have been strats and teles where I have loved one and not the other when they're the same model and I am thinking what the hell is the difference?! For example some are just easy to bend on and some aren't. The slack in the strings is right in one and not the other. I found out years later that it had a lot to do with the angle of the neck into the body. It seems ridiculous but I chased this annoying mystery for years. Now, I set up my own strats sometimes they need a tweak in the neck angle for my taste and sometimes they're perfect as is. Makes a huge difference for me, personally. I hate being picky about that stuff but the playability thing is everything for me and it just has to feel right. So, I take my amps to the pros but set up my own guitars for the most part.

I'm listening to the intro thinking, I'm going to share that with the group and then you start talking about not getting all amped up from the noise of the bullshit. Hey Guthrie I wanted to ask you about Nobles or your GTO pedal. I don't have the opportunity to try out these to pedals, I can just order them and hope for the best :). But I have a Boss OD3 for which some people claim it's similar to ODR1. Have you ever tried the Boss and how does it compare? I like it's compression and to me it sounds kinda close to Nobles but it lacks something.
    Thanks!

I need to check the rest of the video , I went to the end first and the spot-on comments about getting a good Strat, tele, Lp. I’ve got 17 or so electric guitars, I like them all, they all play reasonably well and I’ve convinced myself that they all bring a little different flavor to the tone. But it’s become a burden in some ways.

Hey Guthrie, Sorry about sending you the maroon shirt. That’s all they had in stock. I got myself one too because the girlfriend is always trying to get me to wear something other than black. I wasn’t into it either. If they get the black back in stock I’ll send you another one.
