Today we’re looking at a blues comping etude that I wrote after drawing a lot of inspiration from the rhythm playing of a modern day blues master - Kirk Fletcher!
Visit this link to download the TAB files for FREE (PDF & Guitar Pro) - mailchi.mp/bul...
There are loads of incredible blues players out there today - Josh Smith, Matt Schofield, Joe Bonamassa and Eric Gales are just a few of the guys I’ve been listening to for years now but Kirk Fletcher is one who I only started really listening to over the past few months.
Kirk is of course a fantastic lead blues player but as I mention in this video, it’s his blues comping / rhythm chops that really fascinate me as both a fan and a student of blues guitar playing.
I wrote this etude and uploaded it to instagram a few months ago. In terms of the chord voicings I used, the single note lines I threw in between the chords and the rhythmic feel in general, it was very much inspired by Kirk’s rhythm playing.
In this free lesson, I break the etude down into 5 key elements to help you better understand how I put it together.
    The 5 key elements are:
    The shuffle feel
    Chord voicings
    Double-stops (on the I chord)
    Passing chords
    Single-note lines
I hope you guys enjoy this free lesson - I had a lot of fun making it.
    Video edited by John Hollingworth.

This is such a great video for many reasons. First, juicy blues rhythm techniques truly are overlooked. Second, Kirk Fletcher is great. Third, Ross does everyone a great service by firmly looping theory into the lesson, which is also such an overlooked aspect with YT guitar lesson videos. This video is 19:48 long and every second is valuable. Lastly, the natural teaching skill and passion are flat out obvious, which makes being on the learning side much more enjoyable. Thanks dude!

Really cool video. I really like comping, and I took to learning and practicing more of it this year. As much as I enjoy listening to searing leads, I'm not the guy to take the front stage, so I very much apreciate playing a supporting role and have fun doing it. Also, a great groove is fundamental to any music, so I like to be a part of that.

I'm pretty sure that's technically not a D9 but an F#m7b5. Interesting idea though it does seem like a type of 4 chord when listening to it played here. Edit: and same with the E9, that's a G#m7b5 (or Abm7b5 depending on key).

    • @RossCampbellGuitarist
      @RossCampbellGuitarist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I see where you're coming from as a D9 with no root contains the same notes as F#m7b5 but in the context of a blues it's functioning as the IV chord so it makes no sense to visualise it as a m7b5 chord.

I'm a bit confused with the D9 and E9 chords, i thought that was the shape for half diminished chords, for example i play the same shape for bm7b5? Anybody can enlighten me please?

    • @RossCampbellGuitarist
      @RossCampbellGuitarist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You'll find that there are many chord voicings that can function as several different chord types depending on what note is seen as the root of the chord. You're right in thinking that the D9 and E9 voicings here could be taken out of this context and seen as F#m7b5 and G#m7b5 chords as they are the same shape. But, we're thinking of D and E as the root notes in these chords, even though I might not always actually play the root notes in those voicings (I could easily add them in on the high E string).
Let's compare the D9 and F#m7b5. These chords share a lot of common notes but the root note is of course different, which makes the resulting intervals in each chord different.
      F#m7b5:
      R - F#
      b3 - A
      b5 - C
      b7 - E
      D9:
      R - D
      3 - F#
      5 - A
      b7 - C
      9 - E
So as you can see, the D9 has all the notes of the F#m7b5 but with the addition of the root note - D.
When you see me play the D9 voicing WITHOUT the root note, it does have exactly the same notes as an F#m7b5 chord BUT I can always add in that D root note on the high E string if I want to, so that's the root note I'm visualising in this context.

May I just comment that this lesson is really good. However, Kirk plus many others have a deep understanding of the rhythm playing going back beyond SRV. Louis Myers, Robert Jr Lockwood , Jimmy Rogers and later Junior Watson , Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl are masters at this. Swing guitarists have a lot to offer as well . I met Kirk and saw him play nearly 20 years ago and KNOW that his knowledge is deep. Rhythm guitar is so underrated, yet the best guitarists are those that play it and know it. It's 90% of the song. Thank you for doing this lesson.

Came across this while exploring "Further on up the Road" by Joe Bonamassa (some similar riffs). What an absolute gem of a tutorial! Thank you so much for taking the time and care to create the lesson. Brilliant playing (as always) and your teaching style makes it all so accessible. Top marks!!

Great lesson, Ross! Can you tell me from what Kirk Fletcher`s lesson did you transcribe it? I really like that kinda of blues rhythm guitar!

Thanks! I didn't transcribe it, it's something I wrote that was very much inspired by Kirk's rhythm playing.

Fabbydoo. I'm just getting started with the guitar and the blues after a loooong lay off and was a bit bamboozled and scared of taking anything like this on until this lesson got me thinking I can. Time and practice will tell :) Thanks again.
