- The word "historic" gets thrown around in football like confetti. But there can be little doubt that Iceland's qualification for the 2018 World Cup™ finals in Russia was exactly that. They've reached their first ever finals, and are the smallest nation in the competitions history. How did the qualify?

these kind of Cinderella stories make me feel ashamed of my country (South Africa), we last qualified for the world cup because we were hosting...congrats to Iceland for making their people proud
I don't think you should feel ashamed, they outlined the process here but it's a lot easier said than done. Adding to that it's really hard to qualify from Africa and and the football associations don't want to invest in development and facilities. But don't lose hope!

My country (Scotland) hasn’t been to the World Cup since 1998 and they’ve never made it out of the group stage, I’ve never been alive to see them in a tournament

Amazing video as always. Iceland's story is almost pure fiction, you get goosebumps the more in-depth you look at it.
The story is absolutely incredible, all credit to the vision and commitment as well as the courage to follow their convictions by Iceland - they are a model for any other country regardless of size or stature. I know I would love my country of over 1.3 billion to learn a few things and put together a decent starting 11. But fantastic work TIFO Football - I have no idea how you keep coming up with the most wonderful videos and some of the best stories but please keep 'em coming!

I like to add more to the thunderclap story, after stjarnan fans saw motherwell do the clap they asked if they could also use it in their league and they did, and then when stjarnan faced inter milan in the europa cup they did the thunderclap, after that game the whole nation started using it for the national games

"Iceland showed the world that international football still means something." I think that international tournaments do mean a lot even in this day and age. When do you see celebrations of club fans after knock out or group stage wins? World cup is still the pinnacle of the game. Club football is money and business.

I was studying some footage of their defending for a tactical article I was writing, and they're like Atletico Madrid.. the 2 banks of 4 move in perfect harmony with eachother.. they are so solid and disciplined. They can get a result vs anybody.

Iceland punch above their weight like no other nation I've ever seen. Thoroughly deserved to beat my shambolic England at Euro 2016, yet were nothing but dignified and respectful about it. Then they followed that by reaching the World Cup. I don't ever want to hear nations like Scotland prattle on about "not enough people" again, these lads prove that all you need is 23 good hard workers.
Please Iceland, just win the whole thing.

Iceland have done exactly what Scotland should’ve in 2000. If we did, we’d be reaping the benefits today. Instead, we have been setback for what may be another 10-20 years.
if you are an icelandic male, there is about a 1 in 10000 chance you are on the men's national team.

Yes maybe the squad picked for World cup 2018. But then when you include all the other players in national team, that played in qualification groups, friendlies, those who were normally included but injured before world cup 2018, say it is 1 against 5.000. But then again this is only one tournament, Gudjohnsen was for example too old for world cup 2018, so was Hermann Hreiðarsson, Guðni Bergmann etc etc. When you count all the people who have represented Iceland in national team, over the years, in all competition. It is probably more like 1 against only 1.000.
You would be hard pressed to find a person in Iceland that does not know anyone having represented Iceland in their national team at high level in some or most sports.

The nicest thing about the whole story, which wasn't mentioned in this video, is this - as Iceland have risen to become a credible football power punching well above their weight, the inspiration it has given to ordinary Icelanders has caused the country's obesity levels, and particularly its childhood obesity levels, have fallen through the floor, in stark contrast to most of Europe. Iceland's progress as a footballing nation has, in a very real way, saved lives.

As a Finnish person it is quite annoying that every other Nordic country except us has qualified for World Cup at least once. When we have easy group, we have shit team and once we have good team, we always get difficult group :/
