  • Batman Arkham City is tremendous. Has been for over over a decade. But today I wanted to go back and see if it still holds up to modern standards when we remove our Rose-Tinted-Glasses. Is it as good as we all remember?

The backstory behind Penguin's monocle is that apparently he was in a bar fight and a broken bottle got stuck into his eye. A surgeon told him it would be too dangerous to remove so he keeps it as a "monocle".

It always irked me that they never mention that in the game. It's explained on his bio page in the menu, but 10 year old me who couldn't be bothered to read that was just confused AF about why Penguin could possibly need a permanent monocle.

I know I totally interrupted those conversations on accident even when I was trying to listen in.

Random observation here but, I’ve always been mind blown of how good looking these promo posters for Arkham City (the ones with a character and a white background, with popping colors) were. They feel so original and strangely give off a feeling that I’d say is separate from the game itself. It feels more like a grittier, noir like, realistic kind of batman story. I’d really like to see that kind of game sometime.

tbf, I dont see a reason why arkham city NEEDS to be bigger. I mean, something big doesn’t necessarily mean its better. I personally prefer a smaller, more intiment open world. I felt like I knew every nook and cranny by the end, and the game feels like it was designed around it and it gets so much detail within the world because of its size.
I really dont think anything would really be improved by making it larger just for the sake of largeness. unless the story was longer. heck, there is already TOO MANY riddler trophies as is.

I think it was in one of Victor Zsasz's stories. If I remember well, he was playing cards against Penguin in Penguin's club. The game was going in Zsasz's favor, but Penguin cheated and took the win at the end. Frusterated, ZsasZ took a bottle and shoved it in Penguin's eye. The doctor's couldn't remove it without causing more irreparable damage to it.
Edit: upon further inspection, it seems that the card game and the bottle incident are unrelated. Zsasz wasn't the guy who shoved the bottle in Pneguin's eye.

15:31 To this day, people still try to shove _Origins_ in the corner. Smh
_Arkham Knight_ goes out of its way to make loads of references and tie-in material to _Origins_ and makes it very clear it's canon to the series. It's still so weird to me that there are people who say it has no ties and/or people who say it is connected....but also not. It's not part of the technical Rocksteady trilogy, but it is still relevantly the prequel entry in the Arkhamverse timeline and chronology.

I will say, as someone who's played probably hundreds of hours in the riddler's challenges for the combat maps, I have a big issue with the combat system. Still amazing and really fun, but I feel like sometimes the game fucks me over and breaks my combo for no reason. Like the character Im playing as can literally travel across the map to hit a guy, to keep the combo going, but there have been so many instances where I am surrounded by guys, or directly facing a guy, and my character(well into a 100+ hit combo) will punch the air. For literally no reason at all. This has happened many times, and I can't identify it as anything I'm doing wrong, I'm always pointing towards the enemy I want to hit, always pressing the right buttons, but for some reason the character will throw a kick into air, and my combo will be gone.
    So annoying.

    • @xgrillsenx
      @xgrillsenx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

The same thing happens in Asylum too. It might have to do with the game trying to track on a different enemy then the one you're aiming for and it conflicts with the system so you end of punching the air.

when harley quinn comes running towards you (13:58) instead of a counter you can also throw a punch and knock her right down.
Also regarding Penguin's monocle, he is told removing it would be fatal, but later on in his tapes Strange says he could remove it, someone I assume could successfully perform the procedure, but Penguin refuses as he thinks it makes him look tough.

I remember almost 100% the game but I never got the Catwoman DLC so I was never fully able to complete it until a few years later. Which was really crazy! My Xbox 360 didn’t have WiFi either.
And I totally remember wanting to glide through the city in the background! I even looked up and attempted to use a bug which allows you to float and fly through the buildings! You used the freeze grenade I believe!
I think why this city felt so expensive since it was likely one of the bigger open world AAA game many people would experience (myself included). Nowadays, various studios can do it, but back then, it was probably more rare.

I remember the moment I brought it home, unpacked the box and the statue, booted it up and just lost myself in it. Probably one of the best preorder experiences I had, I rarely preorder games these days because of the state of triple A games, the last great few preorder experiences I had was Arkham Knight collectors for the Ps4, the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt (both in 2015).

This is one of my favorite games ever! I've played it so many times, specially on my old laptop where I had to play it in a 4:3 resolution at like 20fps lol. But I still played it so many times, I too really wanted to go off gliding into the larger Gotham city. The map felt huge back then but yeah, it is pretty small nowdays. Arkham Knight's does too feel small. Arkham City is probably my favorite one of the bunch, alongside this Batman being my favorite too. There's just so much to love here.
But at least as of now, I really hate the idea that rocksteady has spent like 7 years making a suicide squad game. I mean really? When they could be making a Superman game, or a Justice League game, or heck even a Swamp Thing game would be better! I'm not excited at all for the game. Maybe that can change, but I honestly would prefer they do something else.

In my opinion, the reason to punch Penguin, outside of the early catharsis for players to get a free hit on one of the bosses, it closes a plot hole. If you leave Penguin conscious then he's able to see Bruce Wayne parcour his way onto the roof and never questions that this billionaire who just beat up his crew, can run up walls and break his cuffs AND arrives the same night batman does. I guess the punch probably rattles his mind a bit and he starts to second guess if he really saw bruce doing all that.

Being the only two people named William Smith in the country and both being from Philadelphia it can be confusing… especially since they’re both “actors”.
Fun fact: This Will Smith that’s in the game “Arkham City” also slapped Chris Rock at an Oscars. However, it was 30 years ago at Óscar‘s bar & comedy club. It’s weird how those kinda of things work out.

If I remember correctly, Zsasz gambled his money away at The Iceberg Lounge after his parents died, accused Oswald of cheating at the cardgame (which is fair) and then stabbed/attacked Oswald with a broken bottle. I think it was mentioned in the side mission 'Cold Call Killer'.

Or it's going to be like Avengers where 4 characters are all punching one damage spongy bad guy at the same time so you have no idea what's going on and team mates will kill your combos by hitting the enemy you're currently fighting. I wish they would have done anything other than Suicide Squad. DC thought Suicide Squad and Harley Quinn were going to be their next big IP after the 2nd movie so they put Rocksteady onto Suicide Squad. That plan hasn't really worked out and they couldn't scrap another Rocksteady game (Suicide Squad is not the first game they've worked on since Arkham. They got a couple years of development into something else before that got scrapped and they were told they had to make a Suicide Squad game). It's Rocksteady, so maybe they'll pull a miracle out of their ass, but my hopes are low.

@@luckyraygun1607 Everything you've seen? There's been one trailer and that was a year ago. Any future trailer will have very carefully executed game play so it doesn't look like 4 players beating on one damage sponge enemy, but when the game actually releases and real people are playing it, that's what's going to happen. 4 player melee combat is very difficult to pull off. I just have very little hope for Suicide Squad or for Gotham Knights (especially Gotham Knights). If it's great, then that's awesome, but I'm not expecting it to even be passable.
