Anime studios have been doing tricks like this for many years, even during the early 00's. The amazing part is that this animator seems to have learned about it on his own and figured out his own workflow to do it.

Your animation is incredible, so hearing you tease an "amazing trick !" hyped me up.
I thought i was about to receive a precious nugget of your expertise,
something you could only come up after years of experience.
You said it yourself, "you're going to be ASTOUNDED".
Based on the title, i was expecting to learn how to project a 2D image on 3D geometry, but going by your build up, it had to be something more. Something truly mind-blowing. A trick to always make it believable every time. Make it look accurate under every angle.
But instead you just unveiled the most basic shit everyone has done for decades. XD
It's basically matte painting. 2001 A Space Odyssey used it in similar situations before personal computers even existed.
And you could literally not pass 1st year of my multimedia class if you couldn't do it in After Effects. Everyone in my class did it. A couple years later, we were asked to do it on Maya, too.
Not trying to be demeaning, i probably wouldn't have thought of it if not for my teachers passing it on to me, but like...
    I feel cheated. X')

dude that stuff is amazing , the color theme is absolutly gorgous , the animation smooth , good mix of 2d and 3d , i love that you paint all the shadows and highlights frame for frame , that really makes it look 2dish enough to not stand out from the 2d animation ! subscribed of course

Amazing and simple...just as nature intended. Another method you could also use is to block out the background structures with simple boxes and then use Projection Mapping(I believe it is called Projection Man in C4D). This will project your 2d background image onto the boxes to give it some actual 3 dimensional depth.

I don't mean to sound patronising, but of course it works :D
Backgrounds have been flat pieces of art for decades in animation and it's part of the charm :)
Sometimes they can EVEN be made from several flat pieces and the parallax simulated with different layer speeds...
    And it looks gorgeous... :)

What the... I came here to check the 3D backgrounds idea and left jaw dropped subscribed to whatever is going on here. It looks insane, fluid, coherent... robotech vibes. Those orbital camera transitions from/to characters... Jesus...
Pardon my lack of knowledge of 2D world... TV Paint? (never heard of it), this happens to be better than photoshop animation, or toon boom or adobe animate? genuinely curious about what this has vs the others.

This is a great little trick and I use a similar one all the time in Poser for stuff like views from windows or if I have a scene outdoors I have a cylinder that I put the background on for long distance shots of trees or mountains that you don't need much detail.
