  • Taking the train from Dar Es Salaam to Arusha was a dream come true. I love road travel be it on rails or by road in buses. There something about being in transit with total strangers and perhaps leaving that journey with enriched with stories and new acquaintances.
The train ride takes on a regular basis 12 hours and 30 minutes, it departs Dar Es Salaam at 14:30. Its advisable to get a sleeper seat so that after all the excitement you can get some rest when the night falls

Do you need to bring your own blankets or do they supply them with pillows?

I will be riding this train Monday June 20 from Dar to Arusha - can you confirm the 14:30 departure from Dar? The schedule on TRC's website says it departs at 8:30 in the "afternoon" (the schedule is fixed in Swahili). Also, when did you reach Arusha? 12 hours' travel time seems fast for 650km (by african railway standards). Again the website says it will arrive at 3:00 in the morning. Regardless, amazing video! You have me so excited and I can't wait to follow in your footsteps!

I know this is really late, but just a heads up for anyone else who comes across this comment - times in Tanzania start at 6. So "8.30 in the afternoon", or what you'll hear as "saa nane na nusu mchana" in Kiswahili is actually eight and a half hours after 6am - ie. 2.30pm.
Ditto for arrival time. "3am" in Tanzania time is three hours after 6am - ie. 9am.

I actually couldn't book it and pay for it online. I physically went to the station a day before. I have heard from people that they were able to reserve by calling.

As of March 2024 this train was not running. We had planned to take the service on the 11th March to Arusha from Dar Es Salaam, and headed to Kariakoo Gerianze to buy tickets 6 hours before departure. Upon arrival we were told this train had stopped running about 2 months ago due to the condition of the line. They were not able to tell me when the service would restart.
I instead caught a 10pm KediaOne bus located a short taxi ride outside of town which I recommend. However, booking this is impossible without a Tanzanian or Kenyan phone number, so we travelled in person out to Urafiki to get these the morning before departing.

Will there also be an sgr in this route? Is there any plans or proposals by the government?
