All Aboard Tanzania's Oldest Train! (#36)

  • For the daring and/or stupid among us, you can take an old train all the way from Dar es Salaam in the south of Tanzania to Moshi and Arusha in the north, which lie just next to Mount Kilimajaro and the Serengeti. And thus it was to be the next stop on my journey. I just had to survive an 18 hour train ride, and there was only one way to do it..
    #sabbatical #tanzania #kilimanjaro
For those asking about my Instagram:
    / tommyelforastero
It's the start of a new journey in the north. You may even see me saying I joined a remote tribe in Tanganyika, or that we found paradise a cornfield man's wild home. Many adventures are still yet to be had.

Hi. I travelled on this train route, but in 1996, and in the opposite direction, from Moshi to Dar. I too travelled in 1st class, I had a coupé with two berthes to myself. Your train is a lot more modern looking and a lot cleaner than the old one I was on in 96. Your dining car looks luxurious compared to what I had in 96, where, due to a large 70cm diameter hole in the floor right in the middle of the dining car, one could not for health and safety reasons use it, as there was a serious risk of falling through the hole to the rails you could see passing below (as yes the train was at its full speed). Despite this, the catering staff overcame the problem of the floor hole by serving 1st and 2nd class passengers in their compartments, and I had a tasty meal of rice and fish stew served with warm beer.

Wow good for you for travelling the cheap ways etc. to get places. I left Tanzania when I was 13 and do want to go back to visit. I admit, the train would've annoyed me. The only sound on speakers I'd want to hear is announcements or at least reduced volume of what they're playing. So I'd probably have my earphones on the entire time. I like how you just blend in.

4:54 The Chinese characters on the boy’s T-shirt are “朕就是酱汉子”, which is a famous quote by the Yong Zheng emperor (1678-1735) of the Qing Dynasty, "朕就是这样汉子"("I, your Emperor, am a real buddy like this"). Yong Zheng is known as a workaholic reformist who wrote very long and detailed replies to any report submitted by the government officials. He wrote this sentence in a secret imperial reply to praise some of his officials, saying that he was very satisfied by their performance and promised a hefty reward if they could keep up with the good work.
By the way, “朕” is the first-person pronoun that only an emperor could use; “酱”(sauce) is a homophone of "这样”(this). Mainlanders perceive Taiwanese accent that pronounces "这样“ as “酱” kinda cute, so the designer is basically playing cute here.

My Father built the railway connecting the Central Line to the Northern Line. In the late 50s, he was the Chief Financial Officer of the country. (The youngest in the Commonwealth). The rails were recycled from the old ground nut scheme, and he added a road alongside to save more money, to go thru a notorious section which was always impassable due to mud.....I have seen vehicles over a mile wide, bogged down trying to get around there! Mungu napenda Africa.

You can wait and board the train for more than 5 hrs after the due time.. I really hope We improve the service. Its a shame cuz many tourists like to use it and its services are not hospitable.

Cutting the lines while at this ticket office ( Dar to Morogoro) is what I experienced as well, and not by only one person but by many who just stepped across, (probably) thinking mzungu can wait. It got to a point of disrespecting my presence, and if it was in my country I would have really had something to say about it. But I felt it was still on me to remain calm and respectful as a "guest" in a foreign land. Shit happens everywhere and accordingly, unruly folks are to be had.
