I've had the Osmo Pro for almost a year now. The great thing about it is the speed...you pull it from the case, slap your phone on it, turn it on and you're good to go. No farting around with building and balancing the camera...and no jello arms at the end of the day. On a typical shoot with my Sony F5 as the main camera, I'll shoot coverage with the Sony, then pull out the Osmo to re-shoot some of the sequence, then move on to the next setup. It's fast, and with the Osmo shooting 4K, the footage from the two cameras match surprisingly well. My clients appreciate the extra speed and polish the camera brings to the shoot and I can leave the dolly at home. Money well spent.
Very intresting🎉 The intresting far farmost is you are the first person ive ever seen i the past 3 yrs not selling raw as less taxing in edit. I was wondering y ive been pulling all my hair out everytime i get back and drop footage on my most maxed out mac and spend days on a simple edit. Wow! You nailed it🎉Thank You
I've used this camera, and the standard x5 camera. I also use the normal x3 osmo. All I can say is that if you're used to using these cameras you'll never want to go near a gimbal again. I've used these cameras on extension poles, hanging over boats and up high in the air. I also used them from vehicles where there's no way you could use a gimbal. The zyhun crane won't give you the steadiness you'll get from one of these cameras. As for the Ronin, you'll want to put it on the ground straight away as you're arms will be burning. I've held this on the bike and did a mile long shot before my arm got tired. The compression is an issue but the quality is amazing. Look at his drone shots of the bridge here. The new version of these cameras is the x5s and DJI have yet to make a handle for that. When they do, it'll be awesome.
I shoot inside basketball courts with crap and often uneven light. So the low aperture is attractive, but I also need super fast zoom in and out to stay with the ball so I can get quality footage for the boys. What would you recommend?
.....Please.....Lighter-Colored Sweater of Shirt when reviewing a Black Gimble--Camera setup.....difficult to see the details of the components.....Beautiful Drone Video Using the X5.....very good information.....very, very useful.......
Great device, same they dont make this model anymore, have the pocket one and two but still prefer using this gimble as it feels just right to handle with removable batteries, great mobile support to use your iPhone a a field monitor ,easy connect external mic.so wonderfully designed
Have to disagree with the claim that the X5 has the same performance in "low light" as the X5R. This is simply NOT true, as tests have well documented. Forgetting the RAW output for the moment, these cameras are actually quite a bit different in terms of their light-gathering ability. The OSMO+ camera is a closer comparison to the X5 than the X5 to the X5R is, in terms of actual low light. However, there is simply a lot more data from a Micro 4/3 form factor sensor than that of the OSMO's tiny processor. There we find quite a difference in terms of clarity (not to mention the use of high quality lenses which cannot be used on the OSMP's X3. So, for resolution and clear shots the X5 series beats the OSMO and OSMO+ X3 series cameras hands down. For low light, however, the X5R is far superior, with the X5 coming in somewhere between the two (nearer the OSMO cameras than the X5R) ... and this is reflected in the price point that DJI set for these different cameras.
One thing that is putting me off this set up and also electronic Richard gimbals is the bounce when walking... Can this be attached to a pole or something to stop the up and down when walking? I've got a glidecam and when used correctly it really does glide.
Thanks a lot:) great comparissoon and review!!! Actually i´m agrre with, you smartphnes can amamazing job . Irecord with my Galaxy s7 in Pro Mode and it´s amazing!! better than my DSLR :)
Great review, thanks Lee. Totally agree with your verdict, the X5R is certainly one to be reserved for special shots, ideally to hire in. Total overkill in terms of practical every day applications.
BTW Always great reviews! Oh, and can you get a wide angle lens type or adapter, or will the camera/lens be suffice when using to perhaps shoot property?
How does the focus feel on the lens that comes with the X5 (assuming it's the same that comes with the X5r). Does it have a true manual feel? ...or a loose'y focus-by-wire feel? Also, are you able to monitor well enough to pull focus reliably with this camera? Maybe that depends on the phone you are using as a monitor? But what picture quality does it output? is there an ideal phone/monitor to use with it for good monitoring, or is it only going to be showing you 720p or something lower res on whatever monitor you use with it? Sorry, I have lots of questions. Thanks in advance for any help.
Hey Lee, Great video review. I'm a wedding videographer and I'm thinking about purchasing the Osmo Pro. I was wondering since you've had time to work with the Osmo Pro if you still would recommend it to a wedding videographer. Thanks
One huge problem at the end of that review! When you own an X3/X5/X5R system, you definitely can't just snap the gimbal between the handle and the drone - you need to download and install the respective firmware every.. single... time... You CANT however have firmware on different cards and swap the cards out to install between them (still a drainer), but I have no idea how much of an issue with time that would be with the X5R (especially with a 20 min battery life at about 10 mins to run the firmware update). There is no plug and play with them with DJI, even when mounting the X5 to a M600.
The second camera angle is hugely disturbing and seems pointless. Are you talking to us the viewer, or someone else? But I enjoyed the review info. That was really useful. thanks :-)
Thank you for that fantastic review. I was wondering about the difference in RAW vs UHD and you set me straight. Sub and thumbs up. I really like your in depth reviews as you ask the questions I find myself asking. Keep it up. Cheers, mate. =8-Þ
In these reviews no one ever talks about how to get good audio. I have heard that you can hear the servo motors if the iPhone mic is used. What is your experience?
Are you still using the iPhone's stock camera app? If so I could completely change your video-shooting game... There are ways to get much better quality video out of the iPhone.
I bought the DJI Osmo just to give that a try out. Noticed on your video the Z Axis "bounce" is bad, but nowhere like the smaller Osmo which due to the laws of physics "oscillates" in a fairly regular manner and initiates some form of minor motion sickness. I got the ridiculous Z Axis attachment which is a bit of a joke, and really does not work that well either. The Feiyu tech with a GoPro 4 was okay, as per the X5 above has more "damping" mass and therefore has more chance of working. Not sure how the guys are getting on in France, but I still have high hopes for SteadXP which I believe could work as long as they get their motion correction algorithms working correctly. Z Axis movement is a big problem.
I need your input! I’m looking for a gimbal use my iPhone to store footage and/live stream, with internal or external camera, and the ability to use external mic inputs. ...any suggestions?
One major problem I find with Osmo in general is that it connects via WIFI. It takes forever to reconnect after waking up Osmo from standby, and after 3 standbys, it sometimes doesn't reconnect at all! I don't get why their drone series connects via cable but Osmo connects via WIFI. The short battery life also means I have to put it on standby as much as possible. The connection via WIFI also means that any live-streaming can only be done via mobile data, which will surely exceed my data cap. Imagine a wired connection from Osmo to my phone, and a WIFI dongle for streaming video, it'll be an extremely good live event coverage camera!
You might try a little research. Actually, there is a direct cable connection available for Android. I use it instead of WiFi to avoid the signal delay of wireless.
The real advantage to the R version is the ability to shoot in .mov format at higher bitrates than the X5 version. You don't need to shoot raw all the time, but 60mbs at 4k is terrible compared to the R version in .mov
I've tested the the X5 and I have found it in 1080p 60fps is very soft and major aliasing. Between the soft 1080p 60, 4k at only 60bit rate, and 4k crop for me it wasn't going to work and I returned it.
while a FF camera can pull in more light, lowlight performance is the combination of light brought in by the camera/lens and how the sensor and processor handles the video and noise. One factor can be the pixels per inch, if you have fewer pixels on the sensor it is similar to opening the aperture of the lens or having a larger sensor, so a 50mp FF may not do as well as a 12mp APS-C. Then you have different technologies in the sensor and processor that may also affect how the camera avoids/eliminates/reduces noise and handles higher ISO video
thanks Brad. good hypothesis. I don t think pixel per inch is the critical point in this case , d750 is 24 mp and x5r 16 mp.The key point could be video processing. I don't know. I notice f 1.8 is used for this test on FF camera . It s very large aperture. The crop factor on micro four thirds is X2. So f 1.7 M43 equivalent on FF should be around f4. Of course iso have to be increased in this case, and result could be worst. But depth of field will be larger. On d750 test , everything seems to be out of focus, may be the background is sharper :)
I agree, my original reply was mainly hypothetical not strictly applied to the x5r vs d750. I think in this case, the fact that the x5r is a newer camera and thus has newer processors and the fact that it is recording RAW video and therefore has a lot more information to work with for noise reduction and sharpening is the biggest reason. I also agree with the low light d750 video looking out of focus and think the RAW processing is a party, but would also think that some of that is the narrow depth of field from such a large aperture and shooting hand held (my guess, I don't believe they stated specifically that it was being handheld).
hahaha in real world it performs damn well for a micro 4/3's sensor (and I'm one of those frustrating sensor snobs). I'd suggest a Crane gimbal with a A7RII in that case (assuming you mean A7rII, the A7RI footage is junk). Although I cant see a demand for the X5R (maybe the X5, not the R with all the shortcomings of the Osmo)
Great video, but f/1.7 isn't considered fast in the M4/3 system, remember the crop factor. 0.95 is fast, that's the equivalent of a full frame 1.8, and in your D750 comparison the 750 was out of focus.
Well the f/1.7 for the iPhone is a lens designed for the sensor size. It's not like using a full frame lens mounted on a APS-C sensor, it's more of a DX lens for a DX sensor. So the aperture is 1:1 to it.
Unfortunately not, my point is companies don't take the sensor size into account, f stop has nothing to do with a full frame standard, and to show the disadvantage of a small sensor using aperture crop factor is the best way. IPhones uses to have a 7.2 crop factor, is that sensor is still the same size that makes its 1.7 lens the equivalent light transmission, depth of field, and noise levels as an f/12 lens on full frame. Test it if you don't believe me, take a photo with a full frame lens at f/12 with the same Shutter speed and auto ISO. The extra ISO needed will cancel out sensor size and the two images will be near identical, apart from sharpness. ISO is just an equaliser, 100 on one sensor size is very different amount of gain to 100 on a different camera. Thus smaller sensors mean more noise.
Perhaps you might want to understand what you're talking about before spouting off. You're completely, entirely, 100% wrong about apertures, transmission, sensor noise and crop factors. An f/1.7 lens is an f/1.7 lens, regardless of the focal length or the size of the sensor it's attached to. You're confusing field of view with illumination. Smaller sensors are not inherently noisier. Smaller PHOTOSITES are. A small 640x480 sensor could have a quieter signal than a larger 4k sensor. Digital noise reduction also muddies the waters. You do not need higher ISO on a smaller sensor because the attached lens has lower illumination levels... an f/1.7 lens is an f/1.7 lens, regardless. There is NO SUCH THING as "aperture crop factor."
I'm not sure why but even with the best DSLR for video, D750, the video quality coming out of our cameras is still not as crisp and clear as the iphone, gopro, and DJI cameras. The IDEA of using a DSLR camera with expensive lenses makes you want to believe that a Ronin and $5000 DSLR setup would produce higher quality videos but we have not found that to be the case. Obviously when shooting in low light at ISO 3200 with an f1.4 lens you will get better video than all the previously mentioned cameras but in bright sunny situations the DSLR often times looks worse than much smaller and cheaper cameras. Plus the Ronin is a pain to calibrate
comparing a fucking DSLR to a puny iPhone? what kind of sheep are you? there are high end DSLRs that are used a b cameras in movies, can an iPhone match the video quality of a 5d mark 4? Sony a7s 2?. iPhones are shit compared to a 5d mark IV
Patrick, DSLR's are unquestionably better than the Osmo for video quality. Unquestionably. There can be no question. Cheap, crap cameras may look a little better when you look at the raw footage, but more expensive cameras save more color data, making it easier to grade, allowing you to fix overexposed sections as well as get a much better end result. They've got bigger sensors, leading to better, sharper image quality. They've got manual focus solutions, which you should never forego, because the X5's autofocus for ground work is awful and will ruin your shots. There are an uncountable number of ways in which a DSLR is better for video than a cell phone or an Osmo. This is coming from someone with a DSLR, an Osmo w/ X5, and an iphone. And you're not supposed to shoot in broad daylight. That's just bad videography.
IAN 4000 I know what you mean but I can still argue that the footage from smart phones still can make them a reliable tool but not as unable as a DSLR or mirroless
I've had the Osmo Pro for almost a year now. The great thing about it is the speed...you pull it from the case, slap your phone on it, turn it on and you're good to go. I'm working with a small X3 gimball and I noticed a few month ago that the X5 is awesome. You confirmed that. Thank's for your review ;)
Really wish you guys would post more... Love the reviews!

hi, can these dji cameras dead zone like the zhiyun? i mean it locks when you move and surround the object? thanks
The Osmo is a gimbal..

Wait...you shoot professionally with an iPhone?
Very nice and detailed information. I use the X5 as well and never use the raw on it because you are right on the noises and battery capacity.
May be you should consider trying the DJI Osmo Mobile for your Iphone footage ?
I shoot inside basketball courts with crap and often uneven light. So the low aperture is attractive, but I also need super fast zoom in and out to stay with the ball so I can get quality footage for the boys.

Have the Mavic and Inspire 2 with X5 and the Osmo seems to be the perfect go to tool!
The GoPro Karma looks like it could be a good contender. Have you managed to get your hands on one yet?
loud and clear! nice job with the explanation man!

Would love to see just the X5 (non raw) in action (and also how it sounds too!).
How do you make the camera Zenmuse X5 (OSMO) work with the auto-focus ???
Hey Lee, you can use battery extender to hood up Phantom / Inspire battery, so that it will be able to shoot all day long
what are your thoughts on the beholder ms1 and the a6300? 6k downrezzed, amazing low light up to 25,600.
Excellent review. But for how long can you record video? Does the X5 overheat does it react like a dslr?
One thing that is putting me off this set up and also electronic Richard gimbals is the bounce when walking... Can this be attached to a pole or something to stop the up and down when walking? I've got a glidecam and when used correctly it really does glide.

Thanks a lot:) great comparissoon and review!!! Actually i´m agrre with, you smartphnes can amamazing job . Irecord with my Galaxy s7 in Pro Mode and it´s amazing!! better than my DSLR :)
Did you end up getting the x5 version? Can you show examples of x3 vs x5 in low light to see it the difference is that big for the price..
What about the iPhone 7??? Vs the xr5?? In low light.
Great review, thanks Lee. Totally agree with your verdict, the X5R is certainly one to be reserved for special shots, ideally to hire in. Total overkill in terms of practical every day applications.
Thanks for putting in all this work . These videos really helped me out
BTW Always great reviews! Oh, and can you get a wide angle lens type or adapter, or will the camera/lens be suffice when using to perhaps shoot property?
So were you guys releasing a video comparing the Osmo mobile vs that other iPhone gimbal or was this the video you were talking about releasing?
How does the focus feel on the lens that comes with the X5 (assuming it's the same that comes with the X5r). Does it have a true manual feel? ...or a loose'y focus-by-wire feel? You should consider trying the Zhiyun Crane. Same company as the C Smooth you use for the iPhone but it takes a GH4/A7s or similar. And its only $650.
A Very Detailed Report !
Thanks
Hey Lee,
Great video review. I'm a wedding videographer and I'm thinking about purchasing the Osmo Pro. I was wondering since you've had time to work with the Osmo Pro if you still would recommend it to a wedding videographer.

You don't have to buy everything seperately , DJI sell the Osmo Pro and Osmo Pro Raw packages which includes everything you need.
Can you review the DJI Osmo Mobile?? Maybe a comparison with the other phone gimbal you have? That would be helpful!
The second camera angle is hugely disturbing and seems pointless. Are you talking to us the viewer, or someone else? But I enjoyed the review info. That was really useful. thanks :-)
Would you replace your dslr like a d810 for the x5 osmo? Or would you use the dslr for pictures and osmo for video.
Thanks
Why do you guys crush the blacks so much?
How can you get an even smoother movement when walking with the XR5. I see a tiny bit a of jerky movement while you are walking.
Good video, cleared up a lot of questions for me.
Can you use a headphone on this for monitoring?
Can we use any kind of android phone??? Like lenovo k8
Can we edit the visuals in the phone coz iam doing my edits on my phone
Thank you for that fantastic review. I was wondering about the difference in RAW vs UHD and you set me straight. Sub and thumbs up. I really like your in depth reviews as you ask the questions I find myself asking. Keep it up. Cheers, mate. =8-Þ

This is sooo great review and comparison!!! 👍👍
Can we fix X3 camera on X5 adapter without removing it.
Very awesome presentation. Thank you for sharing!
Are you still using the iPhone's stock camera app? If so I could completely change your video-shooting game... There are ways to get much better quality video out of the iPhone.
Can you do a video on the RAW workflow?
I bought the DJI Osmo just to give that a try out.

The lowlight test clinches it for me
The real advantage to the R version is the ability to shoot in .mov format at higher bitrates than the X5 version. You don't need to shoot raw all the time, but 60mbs at 4k is terrible compared to the R version in .mov
Just get a Blackmagic Cinema Camera with a Ronin M. Far cheaper, far better in every way.
About battery life, you can connect a phantom 4 battery with a cheap adapter
what did you say at the end of your video. I can´t understood what you say
but the x5 only shoots at a 60bitrate verses a Dslr is at 200mb bitrate
I've tested the the X5 and I have found it in 1080p 60fps is very soft and major aliasing. Between the soft 1080p 60, 4k at only 60bit rate, and 4k crop for me it wasn't going to work and I returned it.
X5 is only worth it if it's in the air. It's good for aerial stills, okay for aerial video, and shit for both stills and video on the ground.
That was an awesome review. thanks!
is there gonna be a new osmo compatible with zenmuse X5s

Thanks really interesting, I just can't understand how it could be better than a FF dslr camera in low light.

I also agree with the low light d750 video looking out of focus and think the RAW processing is a party, but would also think that some of that is the narrow depth of field from such a large aperture and shooting hand held (my guess, I don't believe they stated specifically that it was being handheld).
H E L P!!
Looking for ages for that Song at the start!! Its soooooo good!!!
What is the name????
please please help!!!
Hope you get a % because X5 has a new customer
Outstanding review!
I HAVE A QUESTION DOES OSMO 5X OR DJI X5R WORK ON DJI INSPIRA 1 V2
i Think Feiyu 6G Max + Sony rx 100 V better ... so please compare it..
Would be fun to compare that in low light to the a7s II
is it really heavy
the best channel ever
Great review! You guys should check out the new tool we've created for the Osmo and other small gimball devices!
How did u solvethe battery probs?
pretty sure the last firmware update has the fans shutting off when you start recording.
You are the best guys...
great video... next time don't wear a cap... it throws a shadow across your eyes. I am definitely going to check out the X5 system
Dude great video! Raw footage is a pain in the ass, CinemaDNG is the way to go all the way! I'm surprised it doesn't offer that option.
CinemaDNG is RAW and that's exactly what the OSMO Pocket shoots at
What about the x3 ?
GoPro 5 review next please~
Excited ^•^
thanks Brother for a good job, i might do this
Please, includ g7x in this low light review, it will be intresting
woul like to see a x5s on the gimbal
Can the X5 be swappable between an inspire drone and the osmo?
Did you not watch the video or were you just not paying attention?
The answer's yes
Dude you the fuckin shit .. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HONESTY
How does this compare to the new GoPro Hero 5?
The X5R blows it away in terms of quality, interchangeable lens too.
How do you know?
Please review iPhone 7 plus camera
I seriously thought the X5R would perform better. Not at all worth the price until it's A7R quality.
agreed. $4k and still falls short in quality vs whats considered.
hahaha in real world it performs damn well for a micro 4/3's sensor (and I'm one of those frustrating sensor snobs). I'd suggest a Crane gimbal with a A7RII in that case (assuming you mean A7rII, the A7RI footage is junk). Although I cant see a demand for the X5R (maybe the X5, not the R with all the shortcomings of the Osmo)
Great video! You remind me of Steve Jobs.
its ok i bought it for cheap now a whole kit second hand is around 1000usd
great video
i love dji x5r with raw 12bit, 68 billions of color.. waooo.. any colorist love this...
iphone? D750? Of course the the osmo is better. But why do you use D750s for video?
¡GENIAL!
Thus smaller sensors mean more noise.
yes I get great low light footage with my D750 with a 24mm f1:4 sigma and a 50mm f1:4
There is NO SUCH THING as "aperture crop factor."
switch to samsung S7 or S7 edge it's good in dim light
How did you get to shoot near the NY bridges? i heard you need special permissions.
why do you care? just enjoy the content.
that escalated quickly
He sneaked in with a ninja suit on and lurked in the shadows to avoid the solid snake alarm going off.
I thought of that but the electric discharge from the stealth camouflage malfunction would damage the camera
lol :)
MKBHD does 8K RAW every single video and EXPORTS in 4k. You just need a better computer lol.
Right, I shoot in 8k and export in 8k but I use a Threadripper Computer so it's a breeze to edit and render
Ashton Kutcher looking guy
Never shoot RAW video? Try using proxies for editing.
for the amount of money your paying for this osmo your better off just getting a ronin and using your own camera
Have you tried comparing iPhone, GoPro etc. to mirroless like GH4/A7s?
comparing a fucking DSLR to a puny iPhone? what kind of sheep are you? there are high end DSLRs that are used a b cameras in movies, can an iPhone match the video quality of a 5d mark 4? Sony a7s 2?. iPhones are shit compared to a 5d mark IV
Patrick,
DSLR's are unquestionably better than the Osmo for video quality.
I like his hat
If you're showing us a black gadget, wearing a light colour shirt would be a good idea. The camera detail is not easy to see against your black shirt.
