      As for the cars... 😂 the Core EX30 is probably the one I would choose of these two. But it was very interesting to see the BYD had both a decent consumption and comfort level, that was a bit of a surprise. Looking forward to more of these kind of comparisons. Citroen e-C3 versus GWM Ora Cat anyone?

      I very like the design of the EX30. I picked the Dolphin, because it has more space and comfort than the EX30, and is about 40% cheaper (in Thailand). BYD Thailand has also the better dealer network than Volvo Thailand. I am happy with my Dolphin (6 months, 15,000 km).

    Not sure why but every BYD reviewer complains about the speed warnings but fails to realise you can turn it off very quickly by swiping down and pressing the TSR (traffic sign recognition) shortcut. It takes less than 2 seconds.

    I wanted a LFP battery, because it's more durable, and more room in the back - so, I got the BYD Dolphin Comfort. Road holding is very soft and the Linglong tires aren't good, but otherwise I'm very happy with it.

      @@ItsOnlyElectric I don't drive sporty anymore, however the tight bends in mountain roads (where I live) cause it to lean, bounce and wobble a lot : firmer springs and harsher dampeners would reduce that, especially with how much it weights. I just find the Volvo ex 30 hard to justify the price. For example the one you have in the test is as expensive as a BYD seal awd or a tesla model 3. And compared to those three cars I wouldnt choose the ex30.
    You can add shortcut for the sign recognition atleast in the seal. Should work the same way in dDolphin.

    Vale for money and features $ for $, Dolphin wins hands down. Perfect city car, handling/performance more than adequate, if not at the level of a Tesla or some RWD EVs. Exterior is ok, love the interior. Latest software version has fixed all the early annoyances, also has great wireless Apple Carplay. Not what I would pick for long distance 130+ kmh driving with a large family, as the BHD Seal is perfect for that. I have done plenty of 100km trips though in the Dolphin, as it is super comfortable.

    BYD comsumption sounds less than Volvo due to colder inside temperature (heater has its impact) and to eco mode (that cut the engine power) not present in Volvo (and it has double power than BYD). Another note is about the autonomy: it's true that LFP batteries can be charged 100% every day, but if you need to refill in fast mode along the hiway during long trips, you never want to go further than 80% due to the charge curve slope down. Last but not least BYD sounds more noisy.

    The LFP doesn't like to be charged to 100 %!!! The BMS needs it due to the low volatage difference between 0 and 100% charged. The All lithium batteries has degradation, even LFP.

  • @itekani
    @itekani 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    An LFP battery does not "like" to be charged fully at all. It doesn't degrade as much as an NMC battery because the voltage fully charged is lower, but it is still better for it not to sit at 100%. The reason you should charge it to 100% regularly is so the BMS can keep track. The flat voltage curve of the LFP makes it trickier to measure the state of charge.

    • @nozarm10000
      @nozarm10000 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@itekani "Like" is not a word for describing what a battery needs. Tesla recommends the LFP pack to be charged at least once a week to 100%. Leaving the battery at 100% over night or for a day or two does nothing in the long-run to the health of the battery. That's also a misconception.
      What harms the battery the most is temperature. Sitting in a very hot garage for example for days or weeks can eventually ruin a battery. But at this point in time, if a battery failure is going to occur, it's far more likely to happen due to a manufacturing defect than overuse, charging to full, etc.

      @@ItsOnlyElectricIt's an option, don't get me wrong but as I've commented before, the pricing of the EX30 makes little to no sense.
      The "core" variant sits way too close, sometimes above the starting price of the Model 3. Which comes with more range and features as standard. So for me, I just don't see why anyone would choose the EX30 over a Model3 other than liking a Volvo brand name or disliking the Tesla brand name.
      If you start adding any options to the EX30, it becomes laughable in my opinion. The "ultra" trim is just absurdly priced. For anyone considering an "ultra" trim, for a similar price you could even go up to M3 long range, Seal, Polestar 2, Mach-e, EV6, Ioniq 5, Zeekr 001... which would all be around the same price as the EX30 "ultra" or less yet offer more features/range/luxuries/faster charging all as standard.
      And for people looking for an affordable EV, the MG4, BYD Dolphin, Model 3 (in the markets where it's cheaper, like in my country) some of the upcoming cars like the Renault R5 make more sense as they have lower entry prices.
      Overall it's an option but seems like not a very sensible one from a price point of view. It's best feature is the brand name, not the price nor the specifications.

    Again like so many TH-cam car reviews, different regions present with different value. In Australia the EX30 starts from AUD $67K while the high-end Dolphin Premium is AUD $47K, there is just no comparison in price, the $20K difference makes both cars so different. Also look is subjective, I personally think the exterior of EX30 is uglier than the Dolphin.

    I know that a lot of reviewers don't like the front of the Dolphin, but I prefer it over the front of the EX30. The pattern on the EX30 that starts at the lights, then goes vertically down then horizontal, produces a rectangle that reminds me of a letterbox or even a coffin. The interior of the rectangle is empty apart from the Volvo logo, it looks bland.

    The problem with chinese brands at the moment is their resale value. Unfortunately, this goes down faster than with brand-name vehicles. So you should also think about how much you can still get for an inexpensive vehicle if you sell it after 5 years. It remind me at the smartphone market für used phones ;-)

    • @ItsOnlyElectric
      @ItsOnlyElectric  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      In 5 years this depends on multiple factors. The success of the brand, quality, warranties and potential trade wars.
      Most of the factors are in the hands of the manufacturer. Good cars will deprecate less and it's all up to the consumers at the end. Will see in five years. But I really think that this will change.

      @@UgglemannenFTW It's a platform. And the crazy thing is, the chief designer of that platform is Kent Ove Bovellan who is Swedish and is a former Saab engineer. Geely hired a Swedish engineer as their chief engineer (Google Geely SEA chief engineer). The bulk of the work done on the EX30 was done in Sweden. Geely Group is an umbrella of diverse brands but they are like VW Group. Some brands they make, others they only provide funding and platforms for.
      You know that Lamborghini uses a German platform for its SUV, right? And Volvo has used Japanese engines and transmissions. Volvos can be constructed in a number of countries but the directive for the specifications is done in Sweden. And the basic platform was tweaked and modified by Volvo. Porsche uses the same platform as VW but it doesn't result in the same performance because Porsche refines it a lot more. And Bentley too uses that VW platform and refines it to their specifications.

    I'm very tempted by the model Y, but that would mean Elon Musk getting some of my money, and that's never going to happen.
    Of the two, I hhave sat in the EX30 and really, really didn't like it. No room in the back and I thought that the materials, although intended to look/feel expensive, just reminded me of the sort of vinyls we used to get back in the 70s. Nor do any of the lower specced models get a heat pump! I was so underwhelmed by the EX30 that I didn't even bother with a test drive.
    That would leave me getting the cursed FWD option, I suppose. Unfortunately for me, the nearest BYD dealer is over 80km away, so even that I won't be getting.
    So I keep coming back to the MG option. The 5 has good space, but is FWD, while the 4 has RWD. The good thing is that it looks like MG will be replacing the 5 quite soon with an estate version of the 4, which should do me fine.
    And then I saw the reports from the Geneva show and it looks like MG are going to be bringing a model Y competitor or 2 (MG9S is a hatchback SUV, while the MG9 is a saloon, and then there's the IM L6 which looks like exactly what I want).
    Those seem to be my options, unless BYD bring out a hatchback version of the Seal, or even, can I possibly hope for an estate version?

      FWD
