  • These are three of the cheapest electric cars you can buy in New Zealand and Australia, but are they any good?
To find out, Gav took each one for a drive to see which is quickest, which is safest, and which car has the most gadgets. And while he went into this comparison with an obvious winner in mind, once the score was tallied, the ultimate winner was not the one he expected.

We don't have Ora yet in Denmark, but we got BYD and MG. For me personally, it was the MG4 we went with extended range, reasons, one pedel drive, toving 500 kg, rear wheel drive and slightly bigger boot.
But if the Dolphin could have pulled anything and slightly longer range, we might have gone for that one.

Dolphin -- looks really plain and even boring on the outside, but splendid and luxurious inside.
Ora-- looks classy on the outside, classy on the inside, but the boot and battery is tiny.

However I wouldn't touch another MG. My ZS EV was the worst car I've ever owned (and I've owned 71 cars)
The most unreliable, poorly built car and terrible dealer experience which compounds it.

Two things you could add with checking the radio. 1) Does the radio receive both AM and FM bands? A lot of EVs don't have AM radio (the MG4 is one), and 2) how's the reception, e.g. can you pick up Hamilton FM stations in Auckland or Te Kuiti (you may need to turn off the RDS AF function in Auckland to prevent it retuning to the Auckland station).

Hey thanks for this comparsion, having the same debate with myself atm. I hated the acceleration delay on the Ora so that it out. It really is between the BYDs comfort and the MG4s driving dynamics. I sadly only had a around-the-block test drive of the Dolphin it faired alright, had the snappiness you need to duck into traffic, and I agree it has the best software. the MG4 does look a lot better though and that good fast charging is attractive if I ever need to take a long drive. the octagonal steering wheel bugged me when low speed driving.

An excellent assessment as far as I can judge. Just three points with the Good Cat which I own and have been driving for a few weeks. First, the battery in the base model is an LFP battery which I prefer and which might make an easier sell to apartment managers where the car is to be parked in an underground carpark. Second, around town I first felt the steering was weird but once I got used to it I have come to like it. I have lane keep assist set to highest and as far as I can gather, it starts up the lane keep assist at low speed. Third, in the dark green model the interior is a two tone green and cream and is very nice. Niggles: I would like to be able to lock and unlock the car with the passenger side door. And I would like a more definite forward/neutral/reverse knob like my MG ZS EV Mk1 has. And I would like a bigger boot.

LFP batteries are the most user-friendly, allowing 100% recharging every time, so the stated battery capacity is what you get!
The Blade battery's proven safety dynamics also is a safety consideration.
Please include battery details in comparisons, especially please.

Doesnt matter alot , yeah ur right about lfp that it last longer but the thing is that a nmc bettery degrades after about 500 times full charge full discharge (where lfp does 1500)(still isnt broken then) thats 200000km so then your 8/10 years further ands then you still have 85 percent SOC capacity in cas of nmc and 95 for lfp but under the line you have more net capacity in nmc battery. Alway alot of fuss about nmc but tesla started this way(and still use nmc) and some are still going strong after 400000km's.conclusion is that either way the batteries will outlast the car

That's because GWM is also selling ICE cars in Australia and New Zealand and has an existing dealer network. But in the UK, GWM has to build a dealer network from scratch and they don't sell ICE cars in the UK either.

@@dt8101 I'm not in the UK, which is why I quoted €uros, not gbp.
Nor does your comment really make much sense, how does having to set up a dealer network add 50% to the price of a car, especially when there are plenty of dealer groups that are interested in such brands.
After all, other manufacturers have managed the trick without adding 50% to their prices.

Gavin how about periodically doing updates on the second hand market in Aotearoa? Most Kiwis are waiting for second hand, $30G is a bit too much for most. On that are these models in Japan? Because that would be very good for our used car imports.
