2023 Honda e:NY1 review - Is Honda Not Even Trying to Make Good EVs?

  • Honda is renowned for its engineering excellence, but this isn't really reflected in its latest EV, the e:NY1. It features the brand's bespoke EV platform, which will be used to underpin some 30 EVs, but it looks like an HR-V. It also doesn't drive especially well, and its chassis has trouble putting its power down. It's also one of the slowest-charging EVs on the market, with a maximum DC fast charging speed of just 78 kW. Honda needs to make better EVs and the e:NY1 seems to be proof that it isn't even really trying right now.

In France and in Luxembourg you can buy the Advance for 35-36000 euros.. For the moment, there is not any other similar car at this range of prices. Tesla 3 highland, basic model costs 45000 euros.

Yes, but that’s with a massive discount. The list price of the e:NY1 is about 47k in France.

There is promotion period that goes up to end of June 2024 (if I remember well), for both Elegance and Advance versions in very interesting prices. I agree with you that for the prices over 50k euros, it was not worthy to buy this car, but now the prices are starting from 32900 for the Elegance and 35000 for the Advance. There is not a better deal, at least in France, in Luxembourg and, I think, in Belgium too, for a quality electric car.

To increase electric range, the Econ Drive mode is the best option. In this mode the EV prioritizes energy efficiency by adjusting air conditioning, heated seats and the heated steering wheel. The battery is water cooling and well protected. The fact that Honda saves a 10% of the real capacity (61,9 usable of 68,8 real capacity), contributes to ensure a very long life of the battery. Personally, I prefer to point on battery quality instead of a longer km range with even a heavier battery pack. The DC charging speed is kept close to 1C and not over, in order to avoid quick degradation and preserve the long life of the battery.
    This is Honda quality.

Yeah, of course, but this applies to every other EV too, and many others do this better than Honda. Thanks for sharing!

Sorry but that 1C charge rate degredation nonsense is outdated. Anywhere up to 2C is perfectly safe and will have no measureable addition to degradation. This has been proven by COMMERCIAL vehicles which basically only use DC Fast Charging. If you use Level 2 AC charging majority of the time 2C rate DC charging degradation will be IMMEASURABLE. Please stop spreading outdated info.

Car selling well in the UK now. With the discounts it makes it a good deal. Local dealership has a lot of orders at the moment.

If it's heavily discounted, then it's a good buy. But not at the full asking price.

      Thank you for watching!
Yeah, that's weird. I've not seen another EV with a low-hanging battery belly like that.

Maybe the new Honda Prologue will be much better

Maybe, but it’s not really a Honda since it’s built by General Motors on its Ultium platform.

I heard they’re giving massive discounts. Even with 8k off, it’s still not worth it IMHO.

I like a lot of things about it, but I think it’s a poor model by Honda standards as well as when you compare it to any of its electric rivals.
