    - It's important to take action without overthinking it.
    - Most of our problems come from not controlling our impulses.
    - Our brain has circuits that control our actions and thoughts, some that make us act and some that stop us from acting.
    - We can train the circuits that stop us from acting by doing small things that stop us from reacting impulsively.
    - We don't train the circuits that stop us from acting enough because we're too focused on doing things.
    - As adults, we often have unstructured time and too much distraction from things like phones.
    - Focusing for 90 minutes and resisting the urge to do something else can help us train the circuits that stop us from acting impulsively.
    - Learning to sit still and resist the urge to move is a powerful skill.

    It’s a struggle when you’re in a relationship, and you can’t control your impulsiveness. it makes it seem like you’re not trying, or you don’t care, and sometimes it’s hard for my s/o to understand.

    A long, long time ago, before my ptsd spiraled down a dark rabbit hole, I used to be incredibly good at controlling any impulses I had. I was like a Zen monk. Nearly untouchable. I was able to accomplish this feat by completely ignoring my emotions and doing what I felt was more important. I got good at it. However, America has the power to break anybody. Just like they did me

    This is a huge part of why day trading is so difficult. When you talk about veering away from a plan at the gym, there’s almost zero consequence for doing that. When you veer off your trading plan, there can be massive, instant consequences. Immediate feedback and punishment for doing so. So important to be in control of yourself.

      anton kriel was the guy who got me out of this short term thinking. he's really good and his educational content is top tier when it comes to understanding how practicing predicting short term market fluctuations is not only stupid but also impossible to sustain long term. It's something proven statistically. im only writing this comment not to sound smart but to let you know i have been there, i was also into the whole idea of day trading until i discovered anton kriel and actual investing educational literature.

      It works profoundly well when meditating for longer stretches of a time. The mind's always monkeying around, trying to justify why it's ok to stop. After a few weeks or months the mind stops trying as you've become the master. Such a good feeling. Detachment. Can see emotions, thoughts and urges pop up before they arrive and evaluate before actually acting.

    This is very helpful to me. Going to start this today with goes and no goes. My impulses control so much of my choice and life and I've been lost to stop it. I've been masking who I am for so long I don't even know who I am. I really hate myself and hate the way I think. I'm looking for pity or sympathy to be clear, I just need structure to my life and to know how to say no to myself. Any advice is welcome. I want to be better for myself and my family, they deserve better than me and I hate myself for that.

    How do we determine what is a go and a no go function? Do we merely follow our intuition? For example, let's say our dopamine circuits reinforce reflexive cognitively stimulating behaviours through training, such as reading. Are our no-go functions implicitly "shallow", such as social media scrolling, eating junk food, etc? Or, are they reflexive behaviours which could be those aforementioned shallow behaviours or just reflexive ones which could also be implicily "deep", like reading, or learning a new language?

    • @MohamedSherifQ
      @MohamedSherifQ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. This is why in for example in Islam we believe that doing thing in haste is the action of the devil. And that not all our own thoughts are our own. We have angelic thoughts , thoughts of the self feeling (hunger or anger for example) and devilish inspirations. These devilish thoughts are not ours but just inspirations from the devil.
      The devil wants to use your feelings against you.
      That is why islam is all about self-control for the good. And these power will only came with true believe. Having self-control because of truth given true meaning to act meaningful knowing this is a test. And we learn self-control via parenting. And we learn self- control parenting via God.
      Or via what or who else? If we follow our desires blind we will go only for go. And if we follow the desires of others, you will determine your framework of good and bad via people.
      While religion gives you the good and bad beforehand, not dependend on the Ghost of the time.
      But the good and bad always, yesterday, now and tomorrow. every time the same.
      The self is good but out desires is the weakness the devil use. So we mis-use our given body. By doing corruption to it. And we know for sure we humans can do really bad things to ourselves because of our desires. let alone spiritual.
      God know ourselves better than we know ourselves.
      And God is our Master and God gave us teachers to learn to became closer to the self for what we are made for!

      Well, you are...but not the whole of yourself, but rather just that aspect. Also, your brain isn't perfect. Neither is anybody else's. The reason I say that is because ...well, just because you have the idea to do something, it doesn't mean it's in your best interest. It doesn't even mean you really wanna do it. It might be just a habit. We make a lot of excuses for some of our shtty behaviors...we're good at that. If you're a little hungry, you might say to yourself you're starving, just so you can gorge something fatty or sweet. Also, the internet doesn't help. Everybody's telling us to do whatever tf we want all the fkn time. Nobody does that. Not a spoiled child, nobody...not even other living beings...not even a paramecium. And also, who tf are you to always get to do whatever you want without consequences? I don't mean you personally, but anybody. What exactly did you have in mind whem you made that comment? Can you remember? I'm not tryina lifecoach you, obviously I'm here for a reason :D

    Very good. But it still seems like a very limited understanding of meditation, mindfulness, and secular buddhism teachings. Feeling that Hubberman always fumbles and doesn't realize that perhaps 2500 years of practice observing emotions and thoughts has already reached a good level of practical wisdom (metaphysical beliefs completely aside), which could very well deliver him a system and concepts in place of his rebuilding one by one through his studies.

    • @justinhersom130

    • @leahcimual
      @leahcimual ปีที่แล้ว

      indeed alot of this boils down to having self discipline but i think this no-go practice gamifies the monumental task of self discipline into manageable sub-tasks of rejecting simple day to day impulses. essentially, start small and enjoy its knock-on effects
