The actual cause of the sex imbalance in China is because in Chinese culture, the son is supposed to take care of his parents when they are too old to work, while a female would leave the family when she gets married.

This is also true in pre democratic Korean culture. We didn't have a one child policy, but boys were favored because women were considered property of their husband's family. And a daughter would not be able to care for her aging parents. How an apparent intellectual and professor doesn't know this seems preposterous. It just seems like he's just plain racist and intentionally spreading hate against asians.

You're being stupid. His arguments are based on evolutionary biology. The point of genes is to spread far and wide. The warfare hes referring to is at the genetic level. You create excess males so that males will then move into another region and genetically colonize the people who already live there.

  • @commodoor6549

I'm not sure why no one brought up why Chinese couples wanted males. Males take care of the parents as the parents age. So married couples take care of the male's parents, while the female's parents would have to be taken care of by their male child. If they don't have a male child, they don't get taken care of. Homelessness among Chinese senior citizens is on the rise.

Societies don't just magically generate more males so they can invade their neighbors. That is astoundingly idiotic and has nothing to do with evolution. Just because YOU don't understand the concept of evolution and can't recognize a huckster pretending to be an intellectual, doesn't mean normally educated people won't either. Evolution is a biological function that takes generations to reach minor changes through mutation and natural selection. Unnatural selection through societal actions by definition cannot be natural evolution, nor can accidental selective breeding over a couple of generations turn humans into insect colonies with large numbers of disposable drones, even as a population faces declining births. This isn't Pokemon, kid. Metamorphosis is not evolution and evolution is not magic. Read Darwin "On the Origin of Species," this chump sure as hell didn't.

      @JohnSilverHawkins 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

@@jumpinjohnnyruss A dowry is a gift presented to the married couple from the parents of the bride when their daughter marries. It is usually money and/or property. Its value can often be quite substantial. Especially because they are heavily tied to prestige and status. Dowries are a widespread cultural phenomenon and also an aspect of Chinese tradition
As such, when the law mandates you are only allowed to have one child, it might well feature as part of the motivation for why daughters might be less desirable than sons. Regardless of whatever demographic impact that decision has. If you are poor and cannot afford a dowry for a daughter to marry someone, there is considerable pressure on you to get a son instead. Because not only do you not have to pay a dowry--in fact if your son does marry, he will receive it, but a son is seen as more likely to be able to look after you in your old age. Neither of these factors revolve around breeding a lonely generation of soldiers, yet that seems to be the only possible motivation to Weinstein.

BW is an evolutionary biologist. He's talking about Fischer's sex ratio theory... it... is supposed to apply at the evolutionary (not cultural) level, which is to say if there's a *genetic* mutation with one genotype that produces more male offspring and and another that produces more female offspring, then there's "fequency dependent/balancing selection" and whichever genotype is more prevalent in the population actually has less chance of reproducing, so the rare genotype will rebalance...
If this clip is taken out of context and he's talking about non-human animals and plants it makes sense. @@Nick-o-time There's no one child policy in the west so obviously you wouldn't see this phenomenon. While I think the average westerner would not have a strong preference for their child's sex, I do also think you'd see more people who specifically want a son under a one child policy and significantly less who only want a daughter in totality. Though this probably wouldn't make up the majority of westerners.

Brett Weinstein clearly doesn't understand traditional Chinese culture, which he could learn by simply looking it up. Like European culture, Chinese culture is historically patriarchical, and in pre-industrialized China, the only way to continue the family name was to have a son to carry it. Daughters would move in with their husbands' families once they married, and for many parents in that society, investing in the raising of a child to adulthood only for them to be married off to another family was a huge financial strain on the family, especially when most families lived in multi-generational homes and the next generation was responsible for taking care of the parents in old age. That was the whole point of a dowry.
It was logical from their cultural POV, and this doesn't even reflect modern Chinese families anymore. All it takes is for Mr. Weinstein to do a little research into the historical context of it all. Meanwhile, in the 19th century, America banned Chinese women from immigrating to the States long before it banned Chinese men from immigrating for another 60 years. Specifically, white Americans accused Chinese women of all being prostitutes and carrying venereal diseases, when in fact they didn't want the Chinese to marry and reproduce within US borders. Oh how much the present continues to echo the past...

What is so baffling to me is that Brett lives in a right-wing "intellectual" (cough) space where China has been heavily criticized for the one-Child policy, forced abortions and sterilizations, etc., from the pro-life angle. A part of that discourse is how that, plus traditional gender norms and traditions in China, has created a preference for male children. For Brett to just have missed that is... I can't explain it as anything other than him losing what little grasp on reality he had left.

There’s no “evolution” here, just sociology and sexism. Chinese people were limited to one child, and social pressures heavily in favor of males meant couples were statistically more likely to abort female fetuses. The trend never corrected itself partly because those same sexist pressures remain in place and partly because the gender imbalance only became apparent relatively recently. Nobody really knows what can or should be done about it, anyway, since this has pretty much never happened before. The closest analogues would be early Rome or Colonial South America which had mostly men and almost no women, so they just kidnapped women from somehwere else. Something tells me China isn’t planning to raid Vietnam or Mongolia or something to fix their sex imbalance.

It wasn’t “sexism” Emma. What happened was when parents could only have one child they wanted a boy because in their culture it’s on the kids to take care of their parents once they got older and the parents felt that they would have a better chance of being taken care of by a man. It led to millions of baby girls being killed. It was a horrible thing.

Can someone explain to me why this is racist? I'm pretty sure what he is saying would apply to the US if we had a one child policy. Just because we are talking about China doesnt immediatley make the statment racist. Can someone please explain why I'm wrong?

It is racist because he is somehow purporting that the increase in men in China has to do with some military strategy when it is actually because of sexist beliefs that remain as part of traditional Chinese culture - who will carry the name? A woman leaves her parents to support the home of her new family. With this structure, what Chinese family wants a girl if there is no help in any way to the family? Not agreeing this is right but this is what people believed if allowed to have 1 child.
China has issues but targeting a group and trying to make them a military threat is ridiculous when he should more easily point the finger at his own country of Israel and see the ACTIONs of his government on innocent civilians.

You might be confused because of the cryptic way that racists now employ culture as a dog whistle
Using culture as an explanation in a racist way usually involves belittlement or implied inferiority. Ex. Racists won't ever talk about the actual mechanisms for why a culture is a certain way, but quietly they blame the innate characteristics of a people.
Brett is doing a weird race-science thing, inappropriately applying evolution to imply that war is now an innate characteristic of a population of Chinese males. That's why what he's saying is racist, and merely using Chinese culture in an explanation is not. Hopefully this helps you, and you aren't just trying to troll.

@@FallingAliceMusic Maybe sexist or ultra traditional perhaps. Either way, Weinstein prefers to go down some unproven rabbit hole with strange QAnon logic rather than point the finger at his own racist country which has data showing genocide of innocent civilians. But that wouldn’t be a headliner or make money for him because we are already aware of that. Look him up, he has no credibility, he seems to profit from fake accusations.
