But there's no larger context in which using the term "Palestinians" is a deal-breaker for conversation. Calling them anything else actively confuses the discussion for no good reason. And there's no larger context in which "occupied territory" is inappropriate to use in this case. When one people (or two, including Egypt) controls another's food, water, medicine, fuel, electricity, ports, economy and political fate, and bombs their property at will without ever compensating them for the damage or loss of life, they're occupying that territory. When someone begins ANY segment of their analysis with "I don't recognize these two terms," the rest of what they say can't possibly explain away that level of denial / ignorance / lunacy.

      I've watched about 40% of this long ass podcast and plan to watch the rest tomorrow. It's really interesting and while *so far* I've found Eric Weinstein difficult to follow in relation to Sam Harris and, in a few places, borderline incoherent, you are not characterizing his point fairly.
      He was not trying to eliminate the language of one side of the conflict, as you are suggesting, but rather pointing out the point of view of the speaker can be determined merely by the vocabulary they choose to emphasize. Frankly, it's not a particularly impressive observation, true though it may be. And to the extent that he doesn't want to engage with people who use that terminology, he includes the pro-Israeli side. But it's moot as his appearance on this podcast means he absolutely will talk to people whose vocabulary tips off their stance.
      I agree with you that Weinstein's aloofness(and his brother's for that matter, regardless of how badly he was wronged by Evergreen) is annoying and suspicious. He goes out of his way to obfuscate his opinions whereas Sam Harris is very clear about what he believes.

    In another portion of the conversation, he suggested that, instead of bombing Gaza, Israel should keep annexing Palestinian territory until the hostages get released. What's dumb about that is that Israel has already de facto annexed the West Bank since they give themselves the right to take military action anywhere on that territory and to displace anyone they want. Also, an annexation only becomes legitimate if it's internationally recognized. And, given that not even the US is likely to recognize such a move, it would be no different from Russia declaring a annexation of Ukrainian regions in order to force a settlement on their terms.

Before this episode with Sam Harris and Eric Weinstein they had Bari Weiss on, all massively pro-Israel, with no Palestinian side to the argument. Konstantin, the skinny host, did a short video where he said October 7th was the day wokeness died. It's like how the fuck does this conflict have anything to do with wokeness, especially when the most 'woke' tactic of identity politics is being used unapologetically and unironically by pro-Israel people

      I mean if you are a centrist then you would be pro-israel because that is the status quo and that is really what makes a person a centrist. If I said I support this multi-decade official US foreign policy position, you wouldn't call me lefty or rightwiger you'd call me a centrist. Centrist doesn't mean non-bias in fact it just means a bias towards the established status quo.

    I only ever watched Eric talk about mathematics and I never cared to hear him talk about other stuff because, well, his opinion about other stuff is essentially worthless, especially if his rhetoric about that other stuff is an attempt to convey some deep insight he ultimately doesn't have because his whole life has been spent being a mathematician, not a historian or a humanitarian or a philosopher, or a theologian. Then I watched a bit of him on Lex Fridman's podcast talking about the nature of good and evil, again, in a rhetorical manner that was attempting to convey he had extensive experience in the realm of moral philosophy. And it was just so absurd. Then I found out he was friends with Peter Thiel. Then I saw bits and pieces of him talking about wokeness and jumping on the "anti-woke" bandwagon. Now here he is here, talking about another thing which he knows less than nothing about. It's incredible to discover how multi-dimensionally braindead these people are after only initially hearing them talk about things actually within their academic wheelhouse.

      I didn't see him as shutting down anything, unfortunately. Weinstein has a several-minute rant about how awful terrorist violence is but how Israeli violence doesn't really count because it might be all a hoax done by the mothers. No one at all pushed back on either the justification of brutality or the conspiracy theorizing. He finally said "Israel can't figure out how to solve this problem (that they're totally innocent in because even the missiles they kill children with are Hamas's fault)," so the moderator stepped in to basically say "Ok, then, let's all brainstorm how we can advise angelic blameless Israel to best take care of the evil that everyone else is doing. Hmm, should we bomb more or just annex everything or just annex little pieces of innocent West Bank Palestinians' houses in punishment because of what some Hamas fighter that they've never met did?"
      So he didn't question Eric's nonsense, he sat by and listened to it without cutting in. He doesn't question the premise (Israel is the victim and civilians on the other side are irrelevant), and all of the ensuing talk is from the same genocidal mindset. He piped in to say "Ok, all of this is correct and true, Eric, now how do we use this truth in order to give Israel total victory here?"

    • @somethingelse4424
      @somethingelse4424 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SteveGellerMusic Perhaps "shot down" is giving the host too much credit, and maybe I'm misreading the interaction. Perhaps I'm projecting my own state of mind onto them, but to me it seemed like everyone listening to him looked uncomfortable and not really following his reasoning or finding what he said to be profound or a sophisticated analysis of the situation. I haven't seen the original video, but I took the hosts response here to mean "I heard all that and I didn't find it worthy of a response, let's move on". Again, this might just be me projecting my own mannerisms, but when someone says something nonsensical and wrong I often just acknowledge that they said something and try to move on rather than get derailed trying to dissect and refute it. Is it cowardice or mental exhaustion? I don't always know. I do acknowledge that when you broadcast your conversation like this, it's not good to leave these things at all ambiguous and to let these claims go completely unchallenged. If he did disagree, he should have at least said "I'm not completely on board with that characterization, but I'd like to move on".

    • @SteveGellerMusic
      @SteveGellerMusic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@somethingelse4424Ah. I think it is not impossible that the host simply wanted to move on because one of the panelists had spoken for a while and others might be waiting to speak. But I read it as "there's something you said you didn't know, so my job a as host is to open it up and let's see if we can collectively figure it out" rather than "your answer is nonsense but too silly to address."
      All of the people in in the room think that everyone else there is a brilliant scholar, because they all think of THEMSELVES as brilliant, and here comes another panelist that --looky there! agrees with them on everything, so they must be brilliant as well! After all, sheeple, Israel did nothing wrong and Muslims are evil and the real tragedy is that people can't just SAY these obvious things without censorship from the Great Woke Mob out there, so that's why it's so vital to bring together all of these geniuses onto one stage, and if any genius speaks too long, it diminishes the impact of the other geniuses.
      That's a long way from "I disagree with something you said," let alone "I'm challenging your argument with some pushback," which all of the TV hosts are immediately doing the second they hear something that disagrees with their already-formed stance on this subject. If Eric had said something like "Israel gets an Iron Dome, why shouldn't the Palestinian citizens get an Iron Dome as well, if we're trying to protect them?," the host and everyone on the panel would have "shot him down" for 40 straight minutes instead of calmly moving on.

    People who defend or make excuses for Israel simply do not care about the facts of the matter. In the ~7 or so years I've talked about it online (Discord, Reddit, and Twitter), I've never seen a single Israel supporter convinced by any argument. All I can conclude is that they're Islamophobic fascists, they don't care even a little about the suffering of Palestinians. Those who support Israel with any non-trivial amount of knowledge on the matter are outright genocidal.
    The hypothetical person who somehow just learned of Israel on October 7th might be able to be convinced by telling them even just the history of the region since the 90s, but anybody supporting Israel with more knowledge than that is too far gone. Like Michael said, it's not complicated; if you look at any amount of the history of the region, at the relative capabilities of Palestine and Israel, it becomes _very_ obvious what's going on there.

    Anyone calling Eric Weinstein a bigot must not be familiar with the man. I’ve heard hours of him talking, and I’ve never heard a shred of bigotry come out of his mouth. You might not agree with his take here, but what did he say that gives people the impression he’s bigoted against arabs or muslims?
    As someone with left wing politics myself, I’m consistently disappointed to hear the sanctimonious, bad faith takes on Sam Seder’s show. I remember him saying that the autistic Google engineer James Damore deserved to be fired because he said that women weren’t fit to work at the company, or some straw man interpretation like that.
    A little charity in trying to understand people with different viewpoints wouldn’t go astray, rather than dismissing and mocking them reflexively. I miss Michael Brooks.

    This video is almost nothing but strawman arguments, double standards and miss-characterizations. Sam tries to completely deny Israels attempts at giving Palestinians a state by saying "Israel made settlements in the West Bank therefore they never really offered one" even though they did offer, multiple times. And every time it was shot down by the Palestinians. Also the West Bank was part of the Jews original homeland and they had settlements there long before 1948. One of the reasons they took back part of there homeland was the Six day war. A conflict started because Egypt and other nearby countries would not recognize Israels right to exist and Egypt created a blockade to cut off Israel. But I could just use Sams line "point is they lived there". But it doesn't count when talking about the Jews right?
    So how do you turn these events into "Israel never offered them a state"? Oh and the co-host saying "and then theres the underlying racial undertones" just because Eric said "Arabs" is hilarious. Do they bring up the "racial undertones" when the Palestinians or anyone else calls for the genocide of a race of particular people? Oh I guess theres nothing underlying there..
    Nobody would be talking about moving people if people would just stop fighting and killing each other over Jews having a tiny state of their own. Of course Hamas supporters will circle back to "the Jews are colonists and occupiers so all the violence and hate is just" as if trying to live in your tiny homeland is akin to colonizing. As if many Arab & Muslin nations weren't conquered and colonized territories like many states today. And just what country is Israel a colony of?? Israel cant be a colony of itself.
    The double standard on display is unreal and so are the "underlying racial undertones".
    Now Im not sure if Sam is purposefully dense or just lying about what Eric was trying to say. Eric was obviously talking about radical religious groups like Hamas and their belief in martyrdom, the eagerness they show when sacrificing their lives, especially civilian lives for their "holy war". Eric was trying to point out that Hamas wants a brutal retaliation, they want civilian casualties, not just on their enemies side but their own. I dont know how this isnt obvious to anyone paying attention.

      The “state” that Israel offers is a bantustan, not an actual state. The Zionist project is prima facie illegitimate, that doesn’t mean Jews shouldn’t live wherever, but we have no special right to an ethnostate in other peoples land.
      Tel Aviv is no less of a settlement than any outpost in the West Bank.
