I think the line about her not liking him because she said so probably describes how girls will say the exact opposite of how they feel. Or in her head she likes him but treats him in a way that seems like she doesn’t. Or another possibility is she wants him to like her for the sake of her own ego and really has no interest in him other than attention. She never admits in the song that she liked him, but does admit the craving of attention.
Also (last comment I promise!) I've seen so many interesting and informative comments by people (as well as completely off the charts stupid comments!) I think it's better to just let the listeners make their contributions. Most of them are fans
Nick, not picking on you! I think you're making an innocent mistake of using genius.com. I'm annoyed at whoever it is on this site that thinks they are entitled to make such a cocksure ill informed analysis of his lyrics, it's obvious they are not reading his interviews and are ignoring 30 years of history covering the Smiths and Morrissey. Someone thought The First of the Gang was early Morrissey! Even music journalist's don't do a break down of an artist's lyrics so they can "break the code" and tell everyone what they mean, how arrogant. Yes, it's good to have a healthy discussion about how "you" personally feel or think the song is about. That's cool, I like that because that's where someone can open your mind up, that's where you learn about their personal experience. But anyone claiming to have the definitive explanation is an idiot, not a genius. Why don't you google to see if Morrissey has commented on a song and it's meaning or just leave the interpretation out of it.
This little song is a masterpiece. Musically and lyrically.
Can't believe marr was just 18 when he wrote this.

This has to be my favourite of Johnny's Smiths guitar work

Have you heard all of the tracks on "Louder Than Bombs"?
I think there's 3 or 4 that I haven't heard yet.
One of the best compilation albums ever
