@@MusicCatsandCoffee hahaha! Those songs as you might find are actually like anti-depressants for the depressed! Speaking for myself and millions of fans! Firstly you hear them and know you aren't alone and there's someone who feels the same, and that person is able to describe those feelings in ways that you can't, also Morrissey has a way of injecting humour in the mix, so many people describe those song lyrics as "dark" well he might use dark humour and he's very tongue in cheek and self deprecating but he's singing about real human experience, thoughts and feelings that most people, if they're honest with themselves, feel from time to time or have felt that way before, it's part of life, he gets a lot of shit for being depressing but well, he does suffer from depression! (Although he is much older and has said much happier than he was in The Smiths) there's much to know about Morrissey and I really hope you are able to ignore any negative, often inaccurate and ignorant comments that people like to make about him, just enjoy the music and what Morrissey brings!
damn I've seen so many Smiths reactions and this is the first one that really brings up Andys impact on the band and he died today.. may he rest in peace, one of the greatest to do it
When this album dropped (like a bomb) in 1984, I was 17 years old. I was a very, very shy person and struggled through high school and this song spoke to me on so many levels......I have been married now for 29 years. .... but I still come back to this song for nostalgic purposes . Well I Wonder is such a GEM of theirs
A cover version was used as the opening theme for the TV show Charmed that aired in the late 1990s and early 2000s on the WB Network. The reason the song sounds so modern is because it was one of the inspirations for Alternative and Grunge music in the 1990s.
Forgive me if I am going over old ground here but I only just stumbled upon this video. Dont forget, How Soon Is Now was originally recorded and released as a B side. 4 or 5 months later it was released as an A side single. One of the many head scratching moments from band and record company during their short but brilliant career. Half A Person and Well I Wonder are absolute gems of The Smiths back catalogue if you have not checked them out already. Dark and moving yet at the same time uplifting and full of joy. Nobody nailed that quite like these 4 lads. The Smiths were the band of my teenage years back during the 80s. They continue to be the band of my life. Morrissey, during this period had so many top notch quotes, lines and lyrics that have found their way on to many peoples skin as tattoos. My favourite of all being from Rubber Ring, "but don't forget the songs that made you cry and the songs that saved your life". This relates to every Smiths song, for me, right there. Bonus points also go to his words from I Know It's Over, "it''s so easy to laugh it's so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind. Just beautiful. I loved your reaction to this. Made my day. X
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is The Smiths. They have such great songs, many with great lyrics. The most popular one is "There is a Light That Never Goes Out." But if you are looking for a slow song with incredible lyrics, listen to "I know it's Over." I look forward to you discovering more of their songs.
Hey Morrissey, get out of my diary. Unrequited love suggestions, please. And also, I figured out how I know this intro. They used it in The Wedding Singer! 😄
How about the literal song "Unrequited Love" by Thundercat🤣 (it's actually fantastic but the style is very different from most of the stuff you cover on here)
It does get pretty depressing with "Suffer Little Children", but in a different way. And probably only, if one knows the real life tragedies behind the lyrics. "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" (one of my favourites, not much bass there, but a great intro...) or "I Know it's Over" might fit better. "Meat is Murder" is another one - nothing to do with love, though. "This Night Has Opened My Eyes"... "Back to the Old House" has some nice bass too :) So many great songs to chose from. Some of Morrissey's lyrics are pretty on the nose, others are much more ambiguous and hard to tell what they were really about.
Johnny Marr is a legend. He inspired a whole generation of guitarists in the UK. He was the musical force behind The Smiths. Morrisey's lyrics were the cherry on top. The band broke up as quickly as they formed.
My favourite band. And this is their best song, it gives me chills since 1984. I was fortunate enough to see Johnny Marr playing it live with Andy on bass by his side. Now you must listen to “Half a Person”, “Girl Afraid”, “Please, Please, Please…”, “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore”, “You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet Baby”, “Reel Around the Fountain”… Gosh, they have so many great tunes.
How soon is now is definitely one of the most hypnotic songs I’ve ever listened too! I remember dancing to this song at prom and just being in my own headspace even though I was dancing with my prom date! She loved it too!
The boy with the thorn in his side, There is a light that never goes out, What difference does it make, Heaven knows I'm miserable now, Ask and I'll stop now to give someone else a go but I could go on.....but I won't.....no I really won't.....though I want to....but I won't.
Excellent song choice. Morrissey has such a great voice. I remember hearing this as a kid in the early 90s and really liking it. Timeless track. Suedehead is another good one 👍
At the time, Morrissey was Marmite. Most people (like me) found him too whiny. It took me a couple of years to attune to his voice; I like most of his songs now.
You going on about the bass makes me wanna see you react to headmasters ritual, unhappy birthday, this charming man, these things take time and barbarism starts at home. And... Cemetery gates, a boy with a thorn in his side, bigmouth strikes again and stop me if you think you heard this one before. So happy you gave rourke props. Hes criminally underated.
THE greatest and most influential band of their generation. Gritty, sad, funny and heartfelt lyrics, Johnny Marr’s melodic guitar mixed with Andy Rourke’s awesome bass
This song, I Know It's Over and Well I Wonder are my favorite songs by the Smiths. Definitely check out the two other tracks I mentioned, there's also an amazing cover of I know it's over by the great Jeff Buckley
"Timeless" is a good way to describe it. I only know how old it is because I heard it every now and then as I grew up in the 80s, but it still holds up today. I've never paid much attention to the lyrics, but thanks to you, I now know! They are very relatable, unfortunately. Out of curiosity, do you like "The Cure"? I think the two bands have some similarities in sound and depressing lyrical content.
Timeless, yes. Good word. I LOVE these lyrics. Glad I could bring them to your attention. The only Cure songs I know: Lovesong, Friday I'm in Love, Pictures of You, Just Like Heaven (maybe, the title sounds familiar)
@@MusicCatsandCoffee Yeah, the lyrics are really good. They're sparse, but they get the point across. Those are good pop hits by The Cure, but you should listen to "100 Years" by them. It's a completely different sound from those, with bleak and depressing lyrics. I mean, the first line is, "It doesn't matter if we all die" and it only gets more uplifting from there. Great song!
The Smiths, Boy George, Elvis Costello, Oasis etc were part of the large number of children born to Irish parents who immigrated to Britain in the 1950's and 1960's and whose children came of age in the 1980's and 1990's.

Wow! I’ve known this song for ever, I’ve always liked this song, always known what it was about but somehow, you & I seeing the lyric written down for the 1st time …. It just hit me hard! Maybe reminding me of a time in my life I keep suppressed or something. Felt I needed to share that for some reason.
You probably know it from the opening credits of Charmed. Stuck in my head since childhood. Damn good song though. I'd recommend 'There is a light that never goes out' next. Though if you want to go really dark, 'I know its over' is as dark as it gets including every edgy metal band out there. Its like Poe
Hello Lauren. I've loved your responses to their songs, they've been very funny, and very insightful, and I love that you've found them. Personally, if you want heartbreakingly beautiful, I'd recommend the Hatful of Hollow album cut of "Back to the Old House", or "Well I Wonder", from the album Meat is Murder; a song I'd liked played at my funeral, with the instruction that nobody can leave until the rain stops. You'll understand once you've heard it. Best wishes from England.
Loved your reaction, I do enjoy The Smiths, but I personally like The Cure much more, little bit of history between the 2 frontmen there, lol. Check out Disintegration ( honestly the entire Disintegration album if you're looking for depressing). Keep the reactions coming, you're great!!😎

the Smiths songs actually gave hope to a lot of depressed teenagers and 'misfits' that they weren't alone

The opening to CHARMED tv show! and The Craft!
This song is walking at night under street lights in the rain after drinking, or driving at night as the street lights reflect in the windscreen.
In the UK in midwinter is all I could add
Great reaction. This song was sampled in ‘Hippie Chick’. If you like depressing Morrissey lyrics: Angel Angel Down We Go Together, Disappointed
For depressing lyrics, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
For bass, Frankly Mr. Shankly

This Charming Man..,..bass.....nuff said. You're welcome.😁

Jonny fu*ing Marr🤩

You can’t go wrong with any Smiths song but I definitely put in a vote for “That joke isn’t funny anymore “ as it’s a personal fave

"I know you're gonna pay me back, but when exactly do you mean?" Takes on a whole new level. I've already waited too long and all my patience is gone.
