    I never thought of Rico as the main character of Napoleon Dynamite but I find your video incredibly compelling. Truly enjoyed everything you had to say! Can’t wait for your next video!

      I appreciate it, man. Honestly the "main character" comment was kind of a joke because this video hyper-focuses on him and none of the other characters, haha. But I guess he's the main character of his own story.

    I kind of feel like a modern day, uncle Rico, someone who still clinging to the past
    I’m only in my mid 20s but I have a strong sense of nostalgia in the early 2000s and 2010s that I still haven’t moved on from.

      In my 30’s and I miss the early 00’s mostly because it was the same as the 2-3 decades before it here in rural WV. We didn’t have a home computer until 2006, and while dad had a beeper then a flip phone we still had a land line till I graduated high school. Really there wasn’t anything too new or different from the widespread adoption of the microwave and color TV until the smartphone era came about. Back in the early 00’s Coal trucks still ran the roads around here and there were at least 10 union and non union coal mines both employing thousands of people at a good wage within 25 miles of me. Then Obama killed coal, everyone down to sixth graders started carrying devices that gave them uncensored access to all the wonders….and depravity….the internet had to offer, and the world has really gone to crap ever since. Time travel sure does seem appealing these days.

    Thank you. I think I really needed to see this right now. Today's my 30th birthday and in the past three years most of my life's been stripped away. I had to leave my small hometown, leave everything I knew and move to the big city, my friends abandoned me and largely refuse to talk to me, had to watch as my grandfather slowly succumbed to the ravages of age after a severe stroke. Even before the lockdowns happened I was (and still am) spending about 90% of my days alone in my dim basement bedroom, with nothing but my computer and my thoughts to break the silence.
    But I can't focus only on what I've lost, what I've missed out on, but what I still have and what might be to come. I still have my family who've always been there for me, and my little, elderly pug that makes me smile every time I look at her adorable snaggle-toothed pumpkin face. I know there's no point looking back and trying to relive the past as it was, but sometimes what you know and what you feel are different. This video helped me put things back in perspective. I may not be able to go back to the way things were, but I can bring the emotions those things inspired in me into the future, to find and make new things that evoke the same feelings. I can't make the present like the past, but if I carry the echoes of it with me the spirit of the past can live on in the future.
    Sorry about rambling like this. Just now you helped a guy down on his luck today. Thank you. :)

    • @dennigalla
      @dennigalla  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, thank you for rambling. The whole reason I do this channel is to be a medium through which I can help these stories to reach people, so I'm thrilled that my video touched you so deeply.
      This video's message means a lot to me too, because despite the ways in which my life is starting to look up right now I do have a lot of regrets and have spent a lot of time grieving over friends that decided they were better off without me and opportunities I let slip from being a fucking clown and not taking my life seriously. There's unfortunately no way to completely drain the sadness that's associated with our memories of the past in retrospect, in the aftermath of failure and abandonment.
      But I can say from experience that with some effort and a positive change in your own circumstances, you will be able to recapture a lot of those memories for the beautiful things they are. For me, it's all about remembering that it wasn't someone else going round doing those things. In those memories, photos, ancedotes: that was ME. I did that. It wasn't some other guy who was better than me that I'm trying to replace or live up to. That was my life, and even if things have taken a turn for the worst nowadays, making peace with the loss of what I had is the first step to finding it again. Just like moving on from a relationship. It's not easy but it can be done.
      Cheers for watching.

    In my teens I thought Rico was just comic relief, a manchild boomer douchebag who just couldn't grow up. However now I'm in my 30s I totally understand his character. Looking back on his young adulthood with both a nostalgic fondness of a happier time in his life, but also a sense of regret and shame that he never fulfilled his potential and wasted his best years. I totally get it.

    The scene from The Twighlight Zone when Martin's dad says: "That little boy, this is his summer......" reminds me of a statement my older sister made about her NOT stopping by our childhood home we were raised in. She passed by it in her car one day, saw kids playing in the front yard and just having a wonderful time. I ask: "Did you stop and say "Hello"? She replied: "No, I didn't want to cloud their experiences, you know, have them think what they experience isn't unique or special." She went on: "You do realize that the house is practically a century old, a lot of people have lived in it before Dad and Mom bought it. Some of them most likely drove by in the 1970's and saw us but didn't stop to say "Hello" for the same reasons I didn't." She was correct again, I too have been by the old neighborhood, 10 yrs ago, didn't stop.

    • @Selrisitai
      @Selrisitai 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think she's wrong. Adults were always telling me, "I used to do that when I was your age," and it always gave me a feeling of connected-ness.
      That said, you guys didn't know those kids so I don't know if stopping is even something reasonable to do from a social perspective, but I think her reasoning is off.

    I paused the video, watched Walking Distance, and came back, just to get that extra context. Firstly, thank you for leading to me to such a brilliant piece of art--I've seen a Twilight Zone episode or two in school, but never sat down to watch it on my own. And secondly, after watching it, I think you picked a perfect thing to compare Uncle Rico to. He's stuck in the past, but cannot return to change the past, as much as he desperately wants to. I can see why you think of him as the main character of the film, as no other character gets much characterization at all, except for him.
    While Napoleon Dynamite is one of my favorite movies ever, the one thing I actually don't like as about it is Uncle Rico--or, at least his actions throughout the film (SPOILERS ahead for the movie btw). Before watching this video I never had any sympathy for Rico whatsoever, and saw him as an antagonist, and even villain. I still do for the most part. This is because of the parts of the movie you didn't mention in the video--the creepy way he acts toward young girls. While the film certainly treats his actions of pedaling the breast enlargement service (that I'm sure is a scam of some sort like the off-brand Tupperware) toward underage girls as wrong and creepy, it still ultimately leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
    I have never been entirely sure who the woman who rides on a bike to Rico's trailer is at the end of the movie-- if it's his past partner choosing to return, or someone who happens to come around and start a relationship with him. Regardless, I feel that the happy ending Uncle Rico gets is entirely unearned due to his actions (not to mention pretty tacked on for the sake of closure at the end of the movie).
    I feel like he deserved to get beat up by the husband of the woman he was hitting on and pedaling the scam service to, and left at that. I would have appreciated a more open ended ending where he gets what he deserves for his gross actions, and then we get to wonder if he's start to improved himself after the film ends, rather than having a happy ending spelled out for us, and one that to me seems to excuse his actions somewhat, even if that wasn't intentional at all by the filmmakers.
    I'm not trying to deny your main point, as I like and agree with it, nor judge you for your personal connection to Uncle Rico, as we all relate to films differently based on our experiences. Again, I also really love Napoleon Dynamite! That aspect of Uncle Rico's character has just always bothered me, & the way his creepiness is kind of glossed over has always been the one (1) thing I don't like about the movie. And even with that gripe I still consider it a 5/5 Stars movie.
    Anyway, thanks for this awesome video essay! I really enjoyed watching it and thinking about Napoleon Dynamite in a new way.
    Cheers! :)

    • @dennigalla
      @dennigalla  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers for the kind words man, I'm glad you liked the video and especially glad you discovered Walking Distance because of it. I think that episode is some of the best TV of all time and yeah, it perfectly relates to Rico's situation.
      You're totally right about Rico being an arsehole in the movie, he's definitely an antagonist and a bully to Napoleon. But empathy is kind of the golden rule on this channel, and I think it's fairly easy to see Rico's antics for the compensatory bravado that they are: a bitter, sad masculine wannabe at the end of his rope - three guesses why I can relate to that.
      Rex Kwon Do gives him his comeuppance, like you say, and I think the film wants us to forgive him after that. I think Kip and Lafawnfuh's wedding is the "everything's alright" signal. And it seems like it's widely accepted that the woman at the end is his ex-girlfriend Tammy who's come looking for him - I think that's stated in some DVD extra somewhere, and I love that she's come to fetch him after what could be just another one of his episodes. Which is brilliant, cause with one wordless smile she cuts right through his tough-guy snake oil salesman stuff and turns him all shuffling and nervous in a way that a partner who knows you better than anyone else can do.
      Also, I don't really see Uncle Rico as the main character, haha. That was just an attempt at a joke since I was focusing on him and none of the other characters, made especially stupid by the fact that Napoleon's name is the title of the movie, haha.
      Cheers for your thoughts on both the video and the film, and for reminding me why the comments are by far the best part of this process. I hope you'll stick around and talk more about future videos.

    2:18 Although I sympathize with the feeling and the way the comic helps readers feel that sympathy is clever, but running away from your obligations as a father is incredibly shitty. I havent read the comic so who knows, but in reality there are a variety of custody arrangements with children that could accommodate being in a different location. It's too easy to fall into the trap of dramatizing your life and taking overly dramatic actions when small course corrections would be resolve most of the problem. Of course it wouldn't be a nice clean story that lets the character return back to the present with the his past left the same. Harder to write, more messy, less poetic, too practical.

      On the one hand, you're completely right: The man failed his entire family.
      On the other hand, it's interesting that his son, twenty years later, can forgive his father, having been in the same position.
      I think this might say more about what these people allowed their lives to become, and how they refused to change themselves, or change their situations in ways that did not place such a grand burden upon their families.
