I was friends with LeRoy Cooper, who plays Lafawnduh’s younger brother (he was actually her brother in real life too). He sadly was shot and killed about ten years ago. This movie would be on tv after that happened, and I couldn’t really watch it without getting sad. However, as time has passed, it is pretty cool to see that people still love this movie, and now I actually look forward to watching it through to the end with LeRoy’s scene. it’s hilarious!! He nails it. RIP LEROY.
My friends and I saw it 4 or 5 times in the theater. Like twice a week for 2 weeks. The theater would be packed each showing too. It was a cultural touchstone for our generation. If you were 16-25 it resonated.
My girlfriend bought this on DVD and while I was at work watched it with my now oldest son. She said it was stupid and I wouldn’t like it, so I watched it alone, Holy shit i absolutely Loved it and laughed so hard it hurt! Some people are just used to traditional movies and I’m here to say thank goodness this movie isn’t!

Another part though would absolutely love to see these characters again. I watched all the animated episodes and I honestly thought it sucked compared to the movie. Vote for Pedro!!!

Also agree that this is a film that probably shouldn't have a sequel. Its charm for me was the believable offbeat characters that worked so well largely because they were unknown and came out of nowhere... and the strange sensibility and quirky atmosphere that they created to draw you into the general weirdness of the story line. The atmospheric magic reminded me of PeeWee's Big Adventure, a product of Tim Burton's unique sensibilities and Danny Elfman's amazing mood music as a backdrop. Even if these qualities could be duplicated properly, it just seems like it couldn't have the same impact again.

I think a really big part of the movie's appeal, at least in the US, specifically comes from that 'stuck in the past' feeling. It's not just about retro nostalgia being cool. It's that, outside of the big culturally influential cities like Los Angeles and New York, a *lot* of rural and small-town communities are like that-- more on the conservative side, kind of in the middle of nowhere, and perpetually lagging behind the curve. Idaho may be the specific setting, but the movie could just as easily have been set in Kansas or Wisconsin or Alabama, and I think it still would've been much the same. Hollywood doesn't tend to set stories in places like that, at least not without processing them through its own filter-- probably because there's an assumption that nothing noteworthy ever happens in those places. So this movie comes off as a really genuine and unthreatening depiction of areas of the country that feel like they _never_ get proper representation in the media, and that's a huge boon for it.

And the internet was only really being used for instant messenger and sharing porn files! I came across this movie and was sharing it across my friend group and we all thought we found some insane hidden gem. Had no idea until years later that it was massive and just hearing u mention now their advertising budget, i saw none of it. Crazy.

I didnt even have cable yet remember everyone thinking Richard Gere put a gerbil up his bum in the late 90s. It became so notorious that even south park did an episode about it. Same with this movie, it wasnt promoted, or talked about nationally yet every school in the country was quoting it daily 😂 weird how things used to be. You only knew about something if someone told you.
I love the way you can just about hear Kip writing the lyrics to his wedding song early in the film when he's sat at his word-processor. Seems odd that during the film's initial release, the pay-off to that set-up, Kip singing at the wedding, wasn't yet included!
I was working at a video store at the time, and saw this movie as a "timecode" (a preview tape meant only for preview purposes). It became a cult hit amongst the staff; "you have to watch this one".. it just tickled a spot nobody expected. Odd, wholesome, retro, deadpan.. it felt like Hess knew *exactly* what he was doing. My favourite scenes are "the slap", the mailorder time machine, and the moment when the bully is trying to steal a student's bike, and Pedro's cousins roll up in their low-rider. 😂
This is one of my family's favorite movies. I interviewed for graduate school in Logan, UT, and the grad student I stayed with took me on a Napoleon Dynamite tour. We drove around to the various places scenes were filmed, I got a picture of me on the volley ball court, etc., and we went to the thrift store where he bought his suit. I bought my husband a tie he still has. I also snapped a picture of Chuck Mangione 8 track tape! I thought it was hilarious, how appropriate and dated that was.
The store where Napoleon finds the sai reminds me so much of this weird Sears Outlet store I went to with my mom a few times in the early ‘90s. I think it was actually some sort of store where Sears sold catalog return items. It had the same vibe as the store in the movie.
Napoleon Dynamite resonates with everyone because It reminds us of those old road trips we've all taken. Where we passed through small, forgotten towns, and thought to ourselves what life would be like there. I think this movie captures our cartoonish, stereotypical perception of small-town America, making it timeless and loved.
Because of this movie, I’ve been wearing cargo shorts every single day just for the sole purpose of storing tater tots in case an opportunity arises to acquire some extras I can’t eat in the moment. Thank you, Napoleon, for teaching high school me about preparedness.

It was the summer before I turned 18 and after hanging out with the wrong crowd for a few years I'd ended up addicted to oxycontin when this came out, and through means I won't explain I ended up with a pharmacy of the stuff. Some girl from my highschool showed up at my door and started camping out at the apartment I was living in and I took her and my ex-GF (yes, she was my ex at the time but she was hanging around too) to see this movie in the theater. Now I don't know if anyone reading this knows this, but opiates totally numb your emotional response. Probably the only emotion you'll really experience is anger, frustration, irritation, etc... but sadness goes away, joy and laughter disappear, and you're mostly just totally numb. Somehow, even though I was high as a kite and numb as frig, when saw this at the theater it just punched me in the gut with its clever sense of humor. I laughed so hard I cried, and that wasn't something that I'd ever experienced while high as a kite before, or since. The creators and writers on this film knew what was up, and I still can't believe how hilarious it was for me in that state. It was magical. I'm not saying you should do drugs, definitely don't do that, being hooked on opiates at such a young age led to me basically wasting the first decade of my adult life. I wish I'd joined the military or done something else instead, because it was the biggest fattest waste of my life and it's a miracle I survived because many of the people I knew from back then didn't. Anyway, I just wanted to share my personal experience with this awesome film.

To make it all worse, it wasn't prescribed, it was just handed over to me, "keep working kid" I'm in Toronto, and the push is so f'ing bad My dumb ass witnessed and seen a man fall 55 storeys to his death, for the higher ups to want to open the job the next day and continue the push. Despite all the efforts and work. All those years and labor, to be taxed and to have your social worker not even care about your history... As a Newfoundlander who's broken himself to help build the City of Toronto, the working class homies like me, and apparently even homies like you. Have been abandoned dude.. I thought it was gonna be boring but it was unlike anything else I'd seen at the time - almost MUMBLECORE in nature, and that primed me for the films of Richard Linklater such as SLACKER that blew my mind as well. Shows that even a simple, down-to-earth comedy like this can be a super important piece of art!
Frank Sinatra's "Balls in Yo Jaws" used to play at my uncle's house all the time when I was young! I remember him picking me up in his van after t-ball practice, it was cool because it always had candy! He always had a warm popsicle in his pants too, cream-filled I think? He used to compliment me on how good I could keep secrets. The song really takes me back to a better time!
This one of the Greatest early 2000s movie ever made with great comedy, memorable story, killer soundtrack, amazing casts, & it such a damn great film that it never get boring seeing it over and over again.
I was only a couple years out of college when this released. I remember vividly the hysteria surrounding it. A great example of telling an honest and story with great characters will transcend any algorithm or industry category. A perfect time capsule of how long the influence of 80s style and extended into the 90s and early 00s.
I was in high school when this movie came out and can attest to the cultural impact. I also watched it again recently and can say it without a doubt still holds up and it's hilarious!
I was a teen too and the amount of times I heard lines from the movie was a lot. Vote for Pedro pins, buttons, etc. I think I remember only mean girls and Borat having this power. I went to see it with my brother and he still quotes it haha.
It was like a send up of John Hughes films in the 80s, with an actual nerd instead of someone who just wasn't in the popular clique. Those films didn't see plausible to me as the protagonist (especially Sixteen Candles) wasn't awkward or nerdy yet was portrayed as such. They seemed pretty average. Or they would be portrayed as coming from a poor household, but their house didn't look poor to me. The misfit Alison in The Breakfast Club was portrayed as outdated and scruffy, yet that look caught on in the early 90s, so she was 5 years ahead of her time.
budget was $200k not $400k. Also, the name of short film is PELUKA not PELUCHA. Peluca means Wig in Spanish which is what part of the short story is about.
I’m so sad the TV series only lasted 6 episodes. Yeah sure it was heavily inspired by Family Guy but the references and humor they packed into it blows me away. Every time I watch the movie, I throw on the show next.
My son who passed away reminds me of ND. He was going to an alternative school with gang members. One threatened him and he made a really loud goat noise. They left him alone after. But he also had some killer dance moves. RIP TRAVIS

I watched this and Nacho Libre daily. Please don’t touch this movie it was a once in a lifetime moment. But we would love to see more from this group. Growing up in the country and near a small town I can say it actually does feel like an 80s time capsule. I was born in the 90s but feel like I grew up in the wood grained 70s.
I don't really think this movie needs a sequel. If they do one, they need to be really careful. They tried it with Anchorman 2 only 10 years after the original and it was terrible.
I first watched this at 4am in the morning after coming home from 2007 NYE festival with a bunch of friends completely bent on MDMA. It was such a bizarre trip watching the movie in that frame of mind and was immediately burnt into my conscience forever.
I went to go see this movie with my current wife when we were teenagers and her cousin at some rinky dink indie theatre in Rockville, MD. I dont think i have ever laughed so much in a theatre. I bought the DVD n watched it several times afterwards and i still laugh at it today watching these old clips. I remember seeing the poster for this movie in a used CD store and I knew i had to go see it.
I go to church with John Heder. I think the first time I saw him I wondered why the heck he was here!! I guess he just liked it here and decided to move to the area.
They kept it simple, somewhat relatable and the corny comedy that actually turned out to be funny af made this movie what it is. Big props to the actors as well, the guy giving input bout grabbing the steak while it’s being cut, it’s that type of spontaneous in the moment thing I’m talking bout that helped make it (have a real flow to the movie)
I was living in Europe when this came out. When i came back to the states a few months later in December, I went to go buy the DVD, but it was sold out at everywhere! I had never seen a movie do that during the DVD era.
I remember this movie coming out and seen it a year later in 2004. I was laughing so hard. Myself and a couple of friends of mine got together and had a Napoleon Dynamite night where we had tater tots and dang quesadillas.

The trick is to use as few lines and as little shading as possible until it’s recognizable as a nose. No more.
I watch this every few years or so , their is no point trying to recommend this to your friends , they have to discover it on their own , great movie
To this very day I wish they would have made a sequel about Napoleon and Pedro taking the bus to visit Kip and Lafawnda in Detroit.

Frank Sinatra's "Balls in Yo Jaws" used to play at my uncle's house all the time when I was young! I remember him picking me up in his van after t-ball practice, it was cool because it always had candy! He always had a warm popsicle in his pants too, cream-filled I think? He used to compliment me on how good I could keep secrets. The song really takes me back to a better time!
This one of the Greatest early 2000s movie ever made with great comedy, memorable story, killer soundtrack, amazing casts, & it such a damn great film that it never get boring seeing it over and over again.
I watched this recently as an adult and I gotta say it holds up. I think I like it even more.
I watched it with my son when he was like 8 or so. He absolutely loved it.
The girl in this movie, Tina Majorino was also in Waterworld(1995) with Kevin Costner.

I was only a couple years out of college when this released. I remember vividly the hysteria surrounding it.
A great example of telling an honest and story with great characters will transcend any algorithm or industry category.
A perfect time capsule of how long the influence of 80s style and extended into the 90s and early 00s.

I also watched it again recently and can say it without a doubt still holds up and it's hilarious!
I was a teen too and the amount of times I heard lines from the movie was a lot. Vote for Pedro pins, buttons, etc. I think I remember only mean girls and Borat having this power. I went to see it with my brother and he still quotes it haha.
It was like a send up of John Hughes films in the 80s, with an actual nerd instead of someone who just wasn't in the popular clique.
Those films didn't see plausible to me as the protagonist (especially Sixteen Candles) wasn't awkward or nerdy yet was portrayed as such. They seemed pretty average. Or they would be portrayed as coming from a poor household, but their house didn't look poor to me. The misfit Alison in The Breakfast Club was portrayed as outdated and scruffy, yet that look caught on in the early 90s, so she was 5 years ahead of her time.
budget was $200k not $400k. Also, the name of short film is PELUKA not PELUCHA. Peluca means Wig in Spanish which is what part of the short story is about.

I only watched this movie because people kept saying I look like Napoleon Dynamite.
I’m so sad the TV series only lasted 6 episodes. Yeah sure it was heavily inspired by Family Guy but the references and humor they packed into it blows me away. Every time I watch the movie, I throw on the show next.
My son who passed away reminds me of ND.
He was going to an alternative school with gang members. One threatened him and he made a really loud goat noise. They left him alone after.
But he also had some killer dance moves.

I love this movie so much, I’m pretty sure I still have the DVD. When his uncle threw that steak, my bf at the time and I just about laughed so hard we peed on ourselves!! I watched this and Nacho Libre daily. Please don’t touch this movie it was a once in a lifetime moment. But we would love to see more from this group. It’s inspiring how it started as a school project.

I don't really think this movie needs a sequel. If they do one, they need to be really careful. They tried it with Anchorman 2 only 10 years after the original and it was terrible.

I first watched this at 4am in the morning after coming home from 2007 NYE festival with a bunch of friends completely bent on MDMA.
It was such a bizarre trip watching the movie in that frame of mind and was immediately burnt into my conscience forever.
I went to go see this movie with my current wife when we were teenagers and her cousin at some rinky dink indie theatre in Rockville, MD. I dont think i have ever laughed so much in a theatre. I bought the DVD n watched it several times afterwards and i still laugh at it today watching these old clips. I remember seeing the poster for this movie in a used CD store and I knew i had to go see it.
I remember wondering what year the movie was supposed to be set in. It seemed like the 80's to me but I thought it was supposed to be the present.
I go to church with John Heder. I think the first time I saw him I wondered why the heck he was here!! I guess he just liked it here and decided to move to the area.
Its wild that the kind of people that dont get this movie are actually in the movie. They're Uncle Rico.

They kept it simple, somewhat relatable and the corny comedy that actually turned out to be funny af made this movie what it is. Big props to the actors as well, the guy giving input bout grabbing the steak while it’s being cut, it’s that type of spontaneous in the moment thing I’m talking bout that helped make it (have a real flow to the movie)
As someone from Preston, I have a different viewpoint from everyone else. You could describe it as flashbacks.

I was living in Europe when this came out. When i came back to the states a few months later in December, I went to go buy the DVD, but it was sold out at everywhere! I had never seen a movie do that during the DVD era.
I remember this movie coming out and seen it a year later in 2004. I was laughing so hard. Myself and a couple of friends of mine got together and had a Napoleon Dynamite night where we had tater tots and dang quesadillas.
While I don’t want a sequel,I would definitely watch one if they made it.

Thank You for this video. Short story my buddy after 30 years thought the movie was so stupid, he stopped watching it immediately and thought I was pretty stupid for watching it. I was so offended and hurt. I cut him loose that moment and have not spoken a word to him since. he lives in a different state, or I would have "Popped" right in the eye.
