I've forwarded your video to several of my knitting buddies who felt we were all being shamed by not restarting with the new V3. You expressed our feelings so perfectly without being disrespectful to anyone else! We all love the original version and have decided to keep it and love it as it was created with joy by Stephen and not with hate. To me it's a cool Celtic knot! The inkblot comment was spot on, Shauna! Love your colours, too!
@@shaunastitches we, as viewers, appreciate an honest opinion and can tell when a youtuber is being fake. Whether one agrees or not, it's always best to be true to yourself. That's why we watch!❤
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I also am disappointed in how the whole "scandal" was handled. Particularly the complete removal of the orginal clue 1. Yours turned out lovely and your color choices are perfect!
I completely understand and feel the same as you. I'm continuing on and want to finish. This is my very first SW anything.... I'm going to enjoy the process.
So glad to see someone else continuing with the original clue one. I am almost finished with the original clue one. Love your colors. I’m doing shades of purple 💜 I felt all the same emotions. Looking forward to seeing your shawl progress. Thank you for showing your beautiful shawl. We are team original!
Thanks for being one of the brave ones to stick with the original. It has definitely taken the joy out of it for me, but I am also sticking with the original because I loved it on first view. My husband's origin is Jewish, so I ran it by him. He saw a cool geometric design, so I stayed with it. His sister also loved it. I am all about caring for my loved ones. 💜
I can’t see the problem symbol either and have almost completed clue 1 first version. The most disappointing thing for me is that we are being urged to restart and I was disgusted by a TH-cam presenter who grimaced as a knitter explained why she was continuing with the pinwheel design and then said that not restarting was not being supportive of Stephen.
I don’t like that people are being made to feel bad regardless of which clue they choose to knit. I wish everyone could just be happy but it doesn’t seem possible. It’s definitely adding sadness to the MKAL 😢 I’m sure your clue 1 is beautiful!
Thank you, thank you, Thank you!! I've been trying to find others who feel the same as I do. Who loved the original design, do not see any hate symbol (no matter how hard I tried) and are frustrated with the way this has all gone down. I appreciate Stephen giving an alternate but was totally dismayed when he completely removed the OG instructions and now it feels anyone who is continuing with the OG clue will be villainized. It's been so absurd! Plus as you said there are so many actual hateful people who use the actual hate symbol that we should be rising up against. This just isn't it. I had to remove myself from the forum because it was depressing, but I'd been eagerly trying to find a community that wouldn't condemn me for nice pinwheel (what I see) art and I'm so glad I found you!
This is the second time I see the clue 1 finished and still don't see what they are making the fuss off it. I didn't like Steven's colurs , I love your choice and also ''finishing's stories'' from finland. So, does that mine that we have to review all the quilt blocks ?? Sorry for Steven who had to work up a second option whic in fact has nothing to do with the quality work and style he is normaly up To. Thank you for sharing your work and thrully thoughts on the matter as many people will agree ,AND surely you can see from the lovely comments on this page.Merci beaucoup, Tata Cécile from Paris.❤❤❤
Thank you! I have heard that a lot about this clue. I guess that's not a design I see too often so it doesn't pop into my head like the pinwheel (that I also don't see often 🤷🏻♀️)
I’m not doing the mkal this year but I did watch Stephen’s clue 1 video (original) and I thought the design was/is so interesting and very quilt block looking. He is so creative and so inspiring. I will enjoy watching how things unfold and cheer everyone on 😊
Thank you for cheering from the sidelines. I also think the quilt look is very cool. I've noticed it is an emerging trend in knitting recently. As usual Stephen was right on trend with that.
Shauna, I am feeling sad too. I think the original clue is beautiful, and fun to knit. I was almost half way when the drama unfolded, and felt myself being sucked into the “you need to pivot” brigade…” or else. Am I not strong enough to make my own decisions? Totally took the joy of this knit away.
You're right, we should be trusted to make our own decisions. Watching the second clue 1 video left a bad taste in my mouth. The MKAL hasn't traditionally been about "pivoting" but he said that is the spirit of the MKAL. Since when? I hope you find something that brings you joy in your knitting.
Oh that's good to know, thank you! I didn't watch the video all the way through, only the few parts I wasn't sure about what orientation to pick up stitches.
I agree with you entirely as a1st timer I'm a last timer. Knitting is a bastion of peace for me and i will protect it so community knitting goes down the drain, I'm an so sad this has happened.
It’s so sad, this has been a highlight of my knitting for the past five years. I’m going to have to find a new highlight. Community knitting can be wonderful.
I had completed 3/4 of clue one when I wandered into Ravelry and saw all the controversy. As of this morning, Stephen has deleted any pictures of the original clue one or any of the color variations that people came up with for clue one. While I was happy to see people embracing making changes to make the design work for them, this new development of deleting the pictures of the original clue one is very disappointing. I will continue on with the original design, but I am saddened to think that I can’t share my version in the group.
I agree it makes me sad that I can’t share mine there either. It really rubs me the wrong way that originally it was ok to modify the original design but now even that isn’t ok. I am really feeling disheartened about this whole thing at this point.
I’m with you. I didn’t buy the pattern until Sat. so now I can only get version 3, and this pattern is just like the many hexagons I’ve been knitting for a few months. So I bought the pattern for the original pattern and it was changed. And I can’t get the original. Have fun with yours!
That is really disappointing and seems completely unfair, to be advertised as one thing but then get another. I hope you can get a refund or possibly find the original in another way.
Your Clue 1 looks great! I’m working on mine. I’m with you on the bruhaha. It is ridiculous. I also saw a pinwheel and a Celtic knot. I hate how the original has been disappeared and those who are not ripping theirs out to knit the new BORING version are being maligned. I didn’t have an issue with the second option being available. I take issue with Stephen completely disappearing his own art.
I'm glad you're choosing to stick with it. I was tempted to quit at certain points but I'm really happy I kept going. An artist having to change their intended design is sad. Art is supposed to evoke emotions right? I'm not much into art but I'm pretty sure I've heard that 🤣
I don't think anyone would argue that. A square bullseye just about anyone could have come up with on their own. It certainly isn't an intuitive design.
@@shaunastitchesI have to say… even though it was obvious your enthusiasm was waning, I found your video very encouraging. I’m feeling some excitement coming back. It’s my first SW MKAL, and this clue 1 has been a bit .. extra .. as the kids say. 😁
The second clue is very straightforward and so far not controversial so that has been nice. I really am missing the sense of community though. That has been lost 😢
Your colours are stunning together, thank you for clearing up to me why I am seeing different clue 1 that I have seen. Hope you feel better with clue 2 ❤
Thank you for this video and how you expressed your feelings. I had the same emotions as many on this thread. Super excited for Clue 1! I always start knitting right away. Then feeling confused but carrying on, then feeling shame that I didn’t rip out and start over…and then basically knitting in secret! I finished Clue 1 a few days ago and then put it away. I hope I feel some renewed excitement tomorrow. I agree that the new Clue 1 is blah and that if this had been the original Clue 1 there would have been a lot of negative comments. Especially after the other MKAL beginnings! I mean, Twists and Turns? Wow. Thanks again and hopefully this isn’t the end of the MKAL for either of us. Your colors are really beautiful together.
I am disappointed to be out of the normal community feeling with this MKAL simply because I have chosen to keep the original. I'm trying to work up excitement for tomorrow's clue. I am excited enough to keep going and am hoping to have that renewed excitement and energy. I plan on staying far away from social media surrounding it until I have an idea what it looks like. I hope we are both pleasantly surprised by Clue 2!
Thank you for this video. I appreciated everything you had to say. I have been feeling really uneasy about the whole thing. You have given me some confidence to keep going with my modified version of Clue 1. I really wanted to keep up (as much as possible) with the knit along but starting again I'd have no chance and would probably just feel defeated. I agree that the new design is not interesting enough, and I don't think we should be having to figure out for ourselves more creative ways to move forward. Having a clear knit-along video is one of the reasons I wanted to join in. I think it would have been better for him to put a pause on the whole thing, re-design a more interesting and exciting clue 1 and then restart at a later date. Looking forward to following along as you continue with yours. Thanks again for your sharing your thoughts, it really was reassuring for me.
The original clue is in a completely different league when it comes to complexity and visual interest. I agree, you don't pay for a design just to have to figure out how to make it more interesting yourself. It seems like some people are really good at that but if I would have had to try to create a different motif I'd still be trying to figure it out instead of waiting for the next clue.
Thank you so much for holding space for discussion, for your thoughts that echo mine. I don’t see it no matter how I turn & squint but i respect those who do. I had finished Section4-Stripe 4 when the emotions hit the wall. Im paralyzed with indecision. I tried the New Clue but my spirit & motivation have been seriously deflated & robbed for this MKAL. 💔😢 not sure I have the bandwidth to do the math to attempt any of the myriad versions other knitters have so kindly offered. 😔 Thank you for your video.
Thank you! I hope you find something that brings you joy, whether it's the original, the new version, something different, or a whole different project 💕
I feel so bad for Stephen as his pain over this controversy was so clear in his v3 video. He is the last person to cause the pain. If anyone truly found the design to be offensive I am sorry for their pain. I worry that someone started this issue t purposely cause the controversy and that makes me sad. I thought the first version was interesting and provided a fun challenge to maintain tension to get the right symmetry.
This was my first MKAL. I too am continuing with the original clue 1. Unfortunately I didn’t finished it before the TH-cam video was taken down. I was so discouraged that I have put it aside for the time being. I have taken a picture of your finished piece and hopefully will be able to figure out how to continue. Thank you for posting. In the meantime I’m knitting a beanie for my grandson…that makes me happy!!
Setting it aside isn’t a bad thing. Come back to it when you have a clearer head. It is a well-written pattern and I bet you will be able to figure it out!
Hello! I too am continuing to knit the original design and totally agree with your comments. If people could set aside their own feelings and be a bit more tolerant, there would have been no issue at all. When you held your finished clue 1 up to the camera, I saw a stunning Celtic knot! L🥰ve it!!
Tolerance, understanding, and accepting that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and feelings would go far to have made this a better situation. The original clue produces a beautiful result if you’re willing to accept it for what it is! I’m sure yours will look great.
I also did not see it but once it was pointed out I couldn’t I see it. As for the ink blot analogy although true but for many people that symbol is front of mind because it impacted their family significantly and it would have been tough to move past it. I applaud Stephen for respecting them and changing it. I’m doing a different modification and hope we can all just enjoy it!
Thanks 😊 I am knitting 🧶 the original-by chance I printed out the clue on Thursday-sometimes I wait awhile. I’ve been feeling gross and unhappy 😢and wanted to put away the whole kit and kaboodle Read a bunch of responses on Ravelry-what I found fascinating: the number of people of Jewish (descent/heritage 🤷♀️) who were not triggered by the design. I still see a pinwheel. I like how Stephen responded so quickly to people’s concerns! What I’m so wondering is what did the test knitters 🤔 think-I’m assuming they are in Europe. I think it’s a pity Stephen disappeared the original 1st clue 😢 Can’t wait for the 2nd clue-so I and everyone can put away this controversy and move forward.
Shauna, I felt similar feelings you did., I was SO PUMPED and excited when I got up at 5:30 am for the clue reveal. I'm not nearly as fast a knitter as you are, so I only got through that first 1/4 of the square before all the negativity started mounting to the point that I felt I should frog and start over. Ughhh!!! I've been depressed all weekend. I finally frogged my beginning, which I loved, to restart a new square. I'm not doing the one the suggested but another one. I'm finally getting nearly done with the first quadrant. One more stripe to go. In spite of it all, I love the MKALs and his designs and am starting to feel an upswing in my mood. Your colors and square look amazing!! Keep going!
I feel bad for Stephen, his team and all of us fans!!! I also have chosen to stick with his original design. I see pin wheels and think of beautiful quilts. I hope everyone can just look past it all and really really just enjoy the creative process. Don't give up! I sure hope he doesn't give up on doing the MKALs. I love love love your colors! Oh my goodness!!!! 🩷🩷🩷 Let those frustrations go. Looking forward to Thursday!
Thank you! I couldn't agree more, let's find the joy again. I really am interested to see where this shawl is going with clue 2. One of my favorite parts is seeing how each clue plays with the last. It'll be interesting to see the differences between shawls with all of the modifications going on.
thanks for your helpful comments. i don't agree with deleting the clue...i was going to buy the pattern afterward this year, to make sure i like it, and to enjoy visualizing my colours, but with the original version unavailable, it has lost much appeal. i wonder if Stephen was purposely targeted...i do appreciate the friendly space for lovers of patchwork, celtic knots, inlay and the like❤
I know many people wait until the MKAL is over to make sure they like the design, and now this year that isn’t an option. It’s really sad to get rid of the design completely. So many people have commented that they think the original is pretty and I have to agree. I have no idea if he was targeted but if this is all because someone is trying, or has succeeded, in cancelling him that makes this even more sad.
I had complete excitement when I knit my clue one but I did it the first day before the clues were changed. I think we should hold out because come next Wednesday we will be waiting for Thursday to come so we can add clue 2
I am excited to see what comes next in this knitting roller coaster, but also happy to have a few days away from it. I'm working on a vanilla sock and that feels very nice right now 🤣
Don't let some overly sensitive persons steal your joy! I happen to have thought of ink blots too when I heard of the "uproar". I have the original version and I won't give in to the pressure. Anyone who knows me, knows I wouldn't knit a "Hate" symbol. It takes a special kind of stupid to think it is. You did a beautiful job! I love your choice of colors too.
@@shaunastitches, I agree, the first clue is better. I reminds me of a quilt block and I don't know the name of it either but, I'm sure it's out there.
If you search TH-cam someone else reposted the original video. Not sure how long it will be up so if you find it you may want to download it for yourself.
Wow! It is turning out beautifully! I don't usually follow the Stephen West MKAL because his design aesthetic doesn't work for me. However this original clue 1 is gorgeous! I'm a purples girl instead of a pinks girl so I would have gone that route. It's too bad one can't get the original pattern, I would be very tempted. I 100% agree with you that the new clue 1 doesn't look like a Stephen West design at all. The first thing I said when I saw it (Emma in the Moment TH-cam) was "Wow, that is so plain and simple and I would never attribute it to him, what a bummer for this who like his designs). I am currently knitting a jelly roll blanket and am doing so primarily because of it looking like a jelly roll quilt. SO far this shawl would be the same way for me, it looks so much like a pinwheel quilt.
Thank you! It’s so cool that traditional quilt patterns can be recreated into knitting patterns. I’ve been noticing a lot of quilting and quilt adjacent projects lately. I think it’s a new trend and I’m not mad about it! I keep saying I think someone will come out with a similar pattern down the road. Keep your eyes out for one!
I’m so glad you made this video 😊 I was going to quit and put the project away but a friend is continuing on-she gave me heart 💜 I understand we all see differently-all I see is a pinwheel I am going to finish my clue 1 and be happy again 😊
I just got to Section 3 and wasn't quite sure how to proceed. Thank you for posting this video! I felt sad for Stephen after he posted his tearful update and thought I'd go to the new version out of respect for him. I tried to go along with the new version and couldn't get past the first couple of rows, because I simply cannot abide "magic loop" and couldn't deal with knitting on DPNs (even tho' I knit socks all the time). I hadn't frogged the original version yet. Like many others, I couldn't see the offending symbol without applying a lot of extra energy to my imagination. But, if anyone else sees it after I've finished it, I can always just overdye the shawl to a single color. Or else just wear it around the house and not out in public.
Obviously I don’t know what the finished shawl is going to look like, but I’m guessing that if you wrap it around your neck like it is so common to wear shawls, you’d never see the actual design anyway. I know in past shawls I’ve knit much of the detail is lost wearing it like this.
@@shaunastitches Absolutely! This is my first MKAL as well as my first Stephen West design. His designs intimidate me as much as Kieran Foley's do. But I finished my first KF design right before this started and I survived it. I'm just glad the issue arose before things went ballistic in the Middle East. I can't begin to imagine how much more savagely people might have treated him if the MKAL had started after this past weekend.
@@MsOscara How have I never heard of Kieran Foley? I went to look them up and wow! Those are some beautiful shawls. I see where I can find a challenge knit when I want one. If you can do that I think you can do anything! You're right about the timing. Designing so far in advance you can never know what the climate will be.
I have the same feelings. I loved the process and it is such a shame to have this creative process disrupted this way. It is bigger than just one designer changing a pattern. It sets a precedent of censorship where there was only love and goodness. He was pushed to his knees and made to hate his own creation. That’s not right. Well, I’m knitting it for myself, and am sticking with the beautiful spirit in which this shawl was conceived. ☮️
I agree, it is unfortunate to see a large designer drastically changing the original design to something so bland. I've seen people saying he's broken over this but it can't feel good to publish something rushed and lacking creativity either. Knit on!
You nailed it! To censor a design based on personal views confusing politics with racism does not sound to me innocent at all. My bet is that someone is behind all this with an obscure reason.
I’m so glad I stuck to the original clue one. The substitute was not “Stephen West” to me at all. There is a Facebook group of people who are honoring the original design.
I agree. Stephen just doesn't do bland and boring and that's exactly what the new clue one is. I have no issues if that's what people want to knit, but it isn't interesting to me at all. Do you mind sharing the name of the group?
I'm halfway thru and like you almost completed my block, which I like. We have similar colors. W/o the video, I'm stuck. Wish I had the original video to follow. I'm looking for someone to help me. I was so excited to start my first MKAL with Stephen and was on a roll to complete before the next clue, but this situation has put a damper on my enthusiasm. Your block is so pretty. If you or anyone has any suggestions, I truly would appreciate it.
If you look up “geogradient” On TH-cam and sort by upload date someone has reposted the original video. If you find it I’d download it because it may not be up for long. Good luck! I hope you’re able to finish your clue.
I really like your version and colors. It really speaks to me and I started to thinking about joining Mkal :D But after watching your video I checked the final version of the pattern and it's really pity that the original version is gone, it looks far more interesting for me...
That really sucks. I have to think that another designer will come out with something similar because a lot of people really like the look of the original clue best. I hope you find a projector that brings you joy!
Beautiful Clue 1 Pinwheel… I wonder if he’s changing the rest of the clues to match the latest design? I hope not. I did change the order of the colors to be more random instead of the same order as the initial design. We will see if I am happy with it.
He has said he isn't changing the rest but I guess we won't really know. It seems like the testers will still be showing the shawls they did during testing so maybe we'll know then. I think it would be hard to rework the entire thing unless it all ends up as a big bullseye 🤣
Your block looks beautiful, and I must say good for you to carry on, I wish I had done that. I had almost finished clue one when everything went op side down in the group, so I started the new one and I do not like it, I think it is very boring and it was not fun to knit. The joy for this KAL is not the same as it was. After seeing your first clue, I will start again with the first first clue. Thank you for this lovely episode, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the KAL.🙂
I completely agree that a lot of the joy has been lost from this year’s MKAL. I have no issue with people wanting to knit the new version, but think everyone should have a choice to knit the original if they like it better or want more of a challenge. I’m sticking with the MKAL but really miss the supportive community feeling I normally experience. It has been nice to have a bit of community here!
I love your colors. The new clue is very boring. I feel so bad for Stephen. He's such a creative designer, and now his design is watered-down. I'm not knitting this, but I was so excited to follow along, especially once the original clue 1 came out. I thought it looked very interesting and reminded me of a quilt.
I love your colors! After the final version of the pattern is released, if the original version of the pattern is still no longer available, I wonder if it would be possible for the v1 instructions to be posted somewhere....I like yours and I had looked at spoilers before watching because I was curious if it looked like something I might want to knit at some point. I don't like the other version. I realize that once the whole shawl is done I might like the new version better but I agree that it's kinda boring.
I agree the original clue 1 is far superior in design to the quickly made alternate striped square. I know it was done quickly but it isn't creative at all. I bet you can find a copy of it somewhere. Things posted to the internet just don't go away as much as some might like it to.
Honestly yea the thing that makes me the most sad is that even my modified clue 1 (different color order so it doesn’t look like the original) is not considered part of the MKAL. It’s all about inclusion until its not the opinion they want you to have so now im excluded
I agree, especially when the alternatives were being encouraged at first. It begins to feel like no matter what you do it will be criticized. That wasn’t even a thing when I published this video. There have been so many changes in just a few days.
I was looking for which color to start with in the pattern too. After in finished the first stripe I turned on the video and realised I was wrong had to rip back… that should have been written in the pattern. (back to video…will comment more)
I am with you on the ink spots idea. People see what the brain is obsessed with, even if they don’t realise. I think clue 1 is beautiful, unique, original. I have been finishing a test knit so haven’t had a chance to knit much on it yet but hopefully can over the next few days.
For how long the clue took you still have plenty of time before Thursday. And, if you don't finish it before the next clue there's nothing wrong with that.
I only see a Celtic knot which I see clue 1…. I didn’t want to rip back so I colour blocked some of the sections in sections 5678….. not finished yet but nervous that I won’t like the finished product… love your honesty…this is my first MKAL and it is really disappointing so far
I have seen a few color blocked versions and I think they look better than the new clue one bullseye version. I'm so sorry it's disappointing for you too. This definitely isn't what we signed up for.
This is my first time knitting a swmkal and I'd printed out the first clue on Friday, but not started. Now its changed and I'm not sure which way to go. I'm not a very accomplished knitter. Would i be able to do the first version without the video to help? I knit well enough to knit socks. I do like the design of the first version better 🤔
Having gone through the entire clue I don’t think it would be too hard without the video, but some parts could be trickier than others. If you get too stuck I’d be glad to help if I can. I’m ShaunaStitches on Instagram. You could message me there and I’ll try to help if possible.
@@shaunastitches The video's gone now, for copyright violation. I suppose it's possible it will show up somewhere else, once people stop searching for it.
I'm just sad because I can no longer decide what to knit, but rather that it's perhaps the best not to knit it at all. (Unfortunately I hadn't bought the instructions yet because I knew I wouldn't have time until mid-October and can now only purchase version 2.) What has happened here is cancel culture and I am being incapacitated, a small number of knitters determines what I have to think and thereby ruins the beautiful knitting together. I don't find it fun anymore - so much hate because of a symbol that most people can't even recognize. I'm torn - on the one hand I would like to support SW, on the other hand I don't feel like knitting the new "adjusted", "cleaned up" pattern. I can only hope that this incident doesn't bring about the end of the Mkals, but I fear it will. SW just doesn't deserve this. Thank you for your episode!
Unfortunately the original isn’t available anymore. I keep thinking someone else who doesn’t care about the backlash will create a similar pattern but I don’t know that for sure, just a hunch. I’m sorry you didn’t get to knit the version you like best. No one knows what’s coming next though so maybe that will change your mind. I’m hoping clue two is a good one!
I am Sooooo Beyond Proud of you for your Authenticity. Cancel Culture is “at it” Again, and I see where Stephen was doing his best to be Accomodating to people and remain Neutral. Fortunately, I do believe he kept the Video up, which was Brave and says A LOT about the fact that he actually Left it up! Good for Him! He couldve taken it completely down, which wouldve been sad. The most disturbing thing about Cancel Culture is that it doesnt actually take Everyone into consideration….what about the 130,000 people who watched that Clue 1 video and spent time and energy on their Creative Mystery and had been excited for Months, only to have that Excitement Deflated by someone’s Negative Toxic Comment designed to “Be Right” and to Destroy Something Good! I Do Not and Have Not ever seen a Pinwheel as anything other than a Pinwheel. Period, end of story. I am Soooo Deeply Grateful for People Standing Up for Stephen and His Original Design, and I truly Believe now, (after my windy sails were deflated) that I can actually finish the Original Clue 1 (&Only) and still make this Shawl! This was my 1st MKAL with him and I have knit many of his sweaters, and have Owned my own LYS, and a similar thing happened to me where a Young Person tried to Cancel me & My Yarn Shop bc she felt like she should be the one owning a Yarn Shop there, and many other reasons, which were completely unfounded….its just sad that people are Dampening Creativity with their MK Ultra Unconscious Behaviors. I do hope that Stephen will make the Original Clue 1 PDF available Again, as we all should be given that Choice as to which Clue 1 we choose, and that doesnt make it Hate Anything, just creative choice. Also, the Symbol in question has existed for thousands of years in Numerous Cultures all across the World, and the Meaning of that Symbol stands True to its Origins, despite the Fact that it was Hijacked by Evil Forces within the Controller Matrix. Just sayin!!!! It literally did not Originate in Germany……
Cancel culture is terrible and I wish it would come to a stop. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean no one else can like it...except that lately that is exactly what it means. I do have hope things will get better when the next clue comes out!
I have participated in several of Stephen's mysteries, but I wasn't thrilled with last year's, so I was waiting to see how this one progressed a bit before making the plunge. When I saw the original Clue 1, I thought it was a beautiful design, and I probably would have gone ahead and gotten it after seeing Clue 2. Now that we aren't able to even get the original Clue 1 design, I won't be buying/knitting this one. I personally think the redesigned Clue 1 is not very attractive, and I do not see the "thing" that others have complained about. It is very sad that a few voices have drowned out all others. Will all pinwheels be banned after this? The same thing just happened with a pinwheel design in a quilting community to which I belong, with the designer there also making a similar decision to not offer the original but only the updated version. This happened right after the quilt-along announcement, and it honestly makes me feel like withdrawing from online communities where these things happen. The designers are made to feel awful about their original designs where there was no ill intent (and only some actually see symbols that offend them). Yours is lovely, and I'm happy to see you decided to keep it. I look forward to watching your progress!
Thank you! I heard about the quilt controversy too. I think it’s sad that this is happening with geometric “quilt” type designs that have been around for a very long time. It’s not as if they became offensive over night. The online crafting community is a blessing and a curse. I love having been exposed to all kinds of designs and designers I never would have heard of otherwise, but it can become too much at times. I’ve taken a step back and do miss the Ravelry discussion boards for the MKAL but it was too much for me. I really think someone will come out with a similar design to the original at some point! It’s a beautiful design.
It is a shame about what some people felt they saw. I see a beautiful pinwheel. And I would think that anyone who knows Stephen knows what was intended. He does not appear to have a mean or hurtful bone in his body
I agree, everything I’ve ever seen from Stephen makes me believe he is a good person with good intentions. I hate that they’ve ruined this bit of innocent fun in the MKAL.
He should have left the original design and have alternatives for the people who had problem with the design, but he removed that choice to those who bought the pattern after. I love your colours and enjoy the knitting.
i agree with you❤i am also SUPER upset that i didn’t take the time to screen record his original video because i still need a bit of help and i refuse to rip out and start over, especially because i don’t like the ‘new’ version. IF anyone knows of a tutorial for the OG clue 1 please let me know!! Really while im empathetic to people’s views - some people will see what they want to see, the rest will see what they are told to see because it’s what mindless followers do. If everyone had waited to see the full design even before jumping to the conclusion that it had to be deleted. Or IDK treating us like adults and letting us make the decision we are comfortable with? I’m not sure how to feel about this anymore either. i did the 2021 MKAL and love it, but waited to do 2022 and im glad because i didn’t like the design at all (i have done probably 5 or 6 of them over the years and the designs have gone from amazing, to interesting, to crazy IMHO) Idk, i already don’t spend much time on Ravelry because i don’t feel it’s a very ‘welcoming’ place depending on your political views and i don’t want the headaches of all that bleeding into my fun/relaxation/hobby/creative time.
I agree, this whole thing has become very stressful and sad. Not the fun event it was supposed to be. I’ve always found the MKAL as a time where the community really comes together and it just isn’t there this year. As far as tutorials go I don’t know of any. I’ll help if I can. You can message me on Instagram if you get stuck and I’ll try to help. I’m ShaunaStitches there too.
Your colours are very similar to mine. First time I have ever partipated in an mkal and all the fuss and comments has put me off. I am abandoning the project.
That is really sad 😢 Everyone should be free to choose which option they want. How can they criticize someone with a background that would make them more susceptible to ill feelings and sensitivity?
I agree I see what you see I see a Celtic knot I see a pinwheel I do not see that crap everyone else is talking about but to each their own everyone sees something different I will say I have not even bothered starting and I'm probably not going to because his update now is so plain Jane it just is so boring
The new official version is not a true WestKnits design. You’re right, it’s boring and I’ve never known Stephen to be a boring knitter or designer. It’s very disappointing.
Love your colors and totally agree with your opinions and your choice! I think the worst thing that we could let happen is for this to steal our joy. Sometimes social media can be such a downer.😢 Anxiously awaiting clue 2!! ❤️🧶
Don’t let the drama ruin your joy! It’s beautiful and I’m so glad you shared your feelings. Let’s get the joy back 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! That's a great plan. I'm here for the joy!!!
I’m glad to be the voice of reason you were looking for. I never expected filming my honest reactions would resonate with so many people.
@@shaunastitches we, as viewers, appreciate an honest opinion and can tell when a youtuber is being fake. Whether one agrees or not, it's always best to be true to yourself. That's why we watch!❤
I agree. I just can't be fake, it doesn't feel authentic and it's too much work, lol.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I also am disappointed in how the whole "scandal" was handled. Particularly the complete removal of the orginal clue 1. Yours turned out lovely and your color choices are perfect!
Thank you Stephanie! If you ever want to do a Stephen West knit that we already know what it looks like let me know. I'd love to do an unofficial KAL.
I completely understand and feel the same as you. I'm continuing on and want to finish. This is my very first SW anything.... I'm going to enjoy the process.
I'm glad you're preserving! I can't imagine how I'd feel if this was my first Stephen West project. He really is a brilliant designer.
So glad to see someone else continuing with the original clue one. I am almost finished with the original clue one. Love your colors. I’m doing shades of purple 💜 I felt all the same emotions. Looking forward to seeing your shawl progress. Thank you for showing your beautiful shawl. We are team original!
I love that, Team Original! I feel like we need shirts 🤣 Keep on knittin’ on!
I just feel so sorry for Stephen. It's a real shame. I also agree with your comments.
At times when we’re unsure it’s always good to get second opinions from those we love and trust. I hope you find the joy again!
@@shaunastitchesYey,you're so right.
I'm glad you're here! I've found a lot of support in these comments and can't express my thanks enough. Knit something beautiful!
Your clue reminds me of a Celtic knot , really like it.
I agree 100% with you. And your colors are awesome.
Thank you! I really do love these pinks 💕
Stephen’s original clue 1 had the little irregularities along that line and he said it blocks out great. Really love your pink yarn choices!
Oh that's good to know, thank you! I didn't watch the video all the way through, only the few parts I wasn't sure about what orientation to pick up stitches.
thank you
I agree with you entirely as a1st timer I'm a last timer. Knitting is a bastion of peace for me and i will protect it so community knitting goes down the drain, I'm an so sad this has happened.
It’s so sad, this has been a highlight of my knitting for the past five years. I’m going to have to find a new highlight. Community knitting can be wonderful.
@@shaunastitches thank you for your reply it means a lot to me.
Your work is beautiful!! I can’t wait to see more of the shawl. 💜
Thank you so much! I'm working away on Clue 3 right now and I can't wait to show you all 🤗
Love your colors, and it absolutely beautiful.
Thank you so much!
I'm not much into art but I'm pretty sure I've heard that 🤣
Thank you! The new option is BORING! It’s easy to modify the colors if someone wants to, but the new clue is much more blah. IMO
It has been been extra to the extreme. Honestly, I don't need this much drama in my knitting.
I love your ink blot analogy. I hope the second clue is bringing back some joy for you.
The second clue is very straightforward and so far not controversial so that has been nice. I really am missing the sense of community though. That has been lost 😢
Your colours are stunning together, thank you for clearing up to me why I am seeing different clue 1 that I have seen. Hope you feel better with clue 2 ❤
Thank you! I couldn't be happier with my color choices. I'm so glad I picked something I loved because that is definitely helping me to keep on going.
Beautiful!
Thank you! I think the colors combine nicely together.
I love the colors you picked for your shawl. Knit on!
Thank you 💕
Thank you for this video.
I’ve been feeling gross and unhappy 😢and wanted to put away the whole kit and kaboodle
Read a bunch of responses on Ravelry-what I found fascinating: the number of people of Jewish (descent/heritage 🤷♀️) who were not triggered by the design.
I still see a pinwheel.
I like how Stephen responded so quickly to people’s concerns! What I’m so wondering is what did the test knitters 🤔 think-I’m assuming they are in Europe.
I think it’s a pity Stephen disappeared the original 1st clue 😢
Can’t wait for the 2nd clue-so I and everyone can put away this controversy and move forward.
Keep going!
Thank you! That’s so sad you frogged your progress. I hope your final result ends up bringing you joy!
Looks fab!
Thank you!
thanks for your helpful comments. i don't agree with deleting the clue...i was going to buy the pattern afterward this year, to make sure i like it, and to enjoy visualizing my colours, but with the original version unavailable, it has lost much appeal. i wonder if Stephen was purposely targeted...i do appreciate the friendly space for lovers of patchwork, celtic knots, inlay and the like❤
I know many people wait until the MKAL is over to make sure they like the design, and now this year that isn’t an option. It’s really sad to get rid of the design completely. So many people have commented that they think the original is pretty and I have to agree. I have no idea if he was targeted but if this is all because someone is trying, or has succeeded, in cancelling him that makes this even more sad.
Love your first clue!
Thank you! I do love how the colors combined together.
I'm working on a vanilla sock and that feels very nice right now 🤣
Love you colors. It looks like a pinwheel to me, also.
Thank you! I can't go wrong with pinks!
Thank you! Even after all the drama I still think the first clue is beautiful and I’m glad to have it in my growing shawl.
@@shaunastitches, I agree, the first clue is better. I reminds me of a quilt block and I don't know the name of it either but, I'm sure it's out there.
Your colors are beautiful. I feel exactly like you do about this mkal, but I will also keep going and with the original version. It is beautiful.
Thank you! The original version is not only a cool construction but a very neat design.
Now the original version video is gone too. I had just completed section 4. So now I’m not sure what I will do. I will think about it for today.
Love it! ❤
Thank you! 😊
I’m so glad you made this video 😊
I was going to quit and put the project away but a friend is continuing on-she gave me heart 💜
I understand we all see differently-all I see is a pinwheel
I am going to finish my clue 1 and be happy again 😊
I'm glad you were able to have support in finishing the first clue. I think many of us are feeling the same roller coaster of emotions.
Unofficial west knits 23… can’t remember the rest. Let me know if you can’t find it from that.
@@cvawter44 I found it! Thank you!
Wowsy wow such beautiful colours in your shawl. I just find your channel and are now an subscriber 💝💗💝
Thank you and welcome!
I think the uneven stripes make for some movement to the pinwheel design. 🙂
That does make sense, I didn't even think of it that way. Plus, once there is more going on it won't be such a focal point.
It really speaks to me and I started to thinking about joining Mkal :D
But after watching your video I checked the final version of the pattern and it's really pity that the original version is gone, it looks far more interesting for me...
Unfortunately for those of us who see a hate symbol in clue 1, it’s like a magic eye where once you see it, you can’t unsee it
I’m that instance I’m glad a second option was made available to those who didn’t want to knit the first option. Happy knitting!
The original clue really does resemble a quilt! Keep watching…let’s see where this goes.
Totally with you! I see a quilt block and nothing else! What a shame that some people have to spoil things with there opinion.
You know what they say about opinions….🤣 Just like (insert anatomy), everybody has one.
(back to video…will comment more)
I thought so too. It's unfortunate to have to rely on the video for that kind of information.
I just saw this on TH-cam. Someone else posted the original video! th-cam.com/video/zq6DbOBj6XY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=v9NWDvPAWx3tSOUt
Thank you both. I think I'm going to do the original, as I prefer it.
@@shaunastitches The video's gone now, for copyright violation. I suppose it's possible it will show up somewhere else, once people stop searching for it.
@@MsOscara I could see that happening for sure.
Can anyone help me with where to start section 7?
I can take a look tomorrow when I’m off work. Hopefully someone can help you before then. You might try some Facebook groups too for help! Good luck!
I'm just sad because I can no longer decide what to knit, but rather that it's perhaps the best not to knit it at all. (Unfortunately I hadn't bought the instructions yet because I knew I wouldn't have time until mid-October and can now only purchase version 2.)
What has happened here is cancel culture and I am being incapacitated, a small number of knitters determines what I have to think and thereby ruins the beautiful knitting together.
Cancel Culture is “at it”
Again, and I see where Stephen was doing his best to be Accomodating to people and remain Neutral.
I do hope that Stephen will make the Original Clue 1 PDF available
Again, as we all should be given that Choice as to which Clue 1 we choose, and that doesnt make it Hate Anything, just creative choice.
Me too Sistar!! Thanks Again for being Truly Authentic and Speaking your Truth!!!! 🤩🙏🏻🫶🏻🥰
Beautiful! I agree with your thoughts. ❤
Thank you!
He should have left the original design and have alternatives for the people who had problem with the design, but he removed that choice to those who bought the pattern after. I love your colours and enjoy the knitting.
Thank you! I agree, I think it should have been left as an option for those that wanted to knit that modular clue. It really is a fun technique.
i agree with you❤i am also SUPER upset that i didn’t take the time to screen record his original video because i still need a bit of help and i refuse to rip out and start over, especially because i don’t like the ‘new’ version.
I completely understand not having the desire to keep going. I’m undecided but I think I’ll keep going. Only time will tell how this all ends up.
Someone on Ravelry-do t remember her name aid she was Israeli and Jewish and had been criticized 😢for knitting the original clue
I agree! I love social media for the group aspect but it can also be a detriment too. I'm anxious about clue 2 also. I'm looking for a joyous clue!
