Who are we?
Yes Theory are four friends from four different countries who constantly seek discomfort in order to grow. If you lack motivation then you've already lost. You need to be so inspired and motivated, that you don't need inspiration and motivation. All of that should not be on your mind. Focus on the things you do not on why you do them.
If you are looking for motivation and inspiration then you already failed or are not ready yet. Making your idea reality should be on your mind, improving it, but looking for motivation should not be necessary and motivation should come naturally for you.

TMerkury it might be hard to get it but, there are people that are so passionate, they don't need inspiration or motivation, this allows them to focus on other more important peoblems.
Elon is simply saying if you require motivation from an external source to push you into starting a company, you are probably not ready. That is coming from someone like him though who's had his passion for electric cars and space ever since he was young and thus did not need to hear inspiring words from other people to do it. He just really loves it and want to do it regardless of what others may say/think. GENUINE passion and drive, in other words.

EXACTLY! I was in my first year calculus at university, studying to be an environmental engineer, I was struggling and my tutor said that I need to rethink the course I'm on. That day was a dark one, I'd given up a lot to become a mature student. But it came to me that she was the one imposing limitations on me and that I was going to make it no matter what. I haven't spoken to a tutor since and am soon to complete my masters degree in Engineering with first class honours.
As the great Les Brown once said a teacher told him: 'don't ever let someone's opinion of you become your reality'.

Elon and his brother banned it. Not a unilateral ban of hot tub talk with anyone. That said, simulation theory boils down to even if it is a simulation, if it's advanced enough, we'd never know.
0:28 his reaction to this is so heartbreaking. to know that the people you've looked up to have failed you, i'd tear up too. i've seen another interview where he said that his friend compiled videos of rocket failures and made him watch the whole thing and that his friends tried to talk him out of it... his drive amazes me in so many levels. he doesn't get discouraged wow how does he even do that? such a huge inspiration to all.

Nice. It reminds me of the subtle art of filtering the students in my industrial design degree at uni. Where everyone got bad results in 1st year. It put off the people who didn't want to be there and the ones who couldn't take criticism. 2nd year on retained mostly the tenacious and resilient students. Clever. :)

What he means by "if you're looking for inspiration, then don't do it" is, that we tend to look for inspiration or motivation when we're hesitate or in doubt. In doing start up, hesitation only fasten the grave. To be successful in business we need to believe that we can do it and leave no room for doubt or hesitation.

This is the first of your videos I've watched. Just wanted to say that you're in a unique position to offer advice of your own. I think the advice that people want to hear from you is to embrace what you're good at and what you're passionate about/ what you can find joy in, since your 650k+ subscribers think YOU'RE a great presenter and educator. Your personality allows you to identify with people well and you stay interesting and entertaining while making your point.
You don't need websites like skillshare to learn to edit,
Just start with a basic editing software like windows movie Maker and move your way up from there.
From basic to expert.
I'd advise, if you do reach the final stage of being an expert, use Final cut pro(if you are an individual editor)
If you have a whole team, use premier pro.

yep das how I learnt to edit and now I use After Affects and flash but I wouldnt use Final Cut Pro because DAMN APPLE TO HELL! although iv tried premier pro it seems a bit basic for alot of things? though it would probabally do me good to learn how to use it for more basic videos to get em done quicker!
also, apparentally apples been making tones of dumb desissions with final cut pro making it even more basic and trust me I used it with my teacher for film making class the year before last and i was just glad i could find a way to use greenscreens.
...then again wen you compare it to windows movie maker =P
i self learn many software from 3d modeling to programming. the best i can tell to learn sofware very fast is by choose the best software in the field and start from advance level tutorial. dont start from basic tutorial. wating shit ton of times. brain will explode but faster time to master the sofware

"If you need in inspiring words, don't do it" I've seen this clip of Elon's 100s of times over the past 5 years and I consider it one of the golden pieces of advice to live and die by.
Over the years I've translated that into my own words and I use several variations of the same thing.
"If you need external sources of motivation for your own idea, then move on to something else"
"If you're not the most motivated person on your own idea, then move on to something else"
Most importantly
"Don't start a company. Let your idea/prototype force you into starting a company"
they're teaching these people by a very technical standpoint. ..theresso many other factors...like the fact that we don't produce and grow our own food anymore were conditioned to think we're born for greater things...until you realize the government can say let's stop production...what do we do...and. also it doesn't matter how many kids you have...you can have 1...or 30...but if not one is willing to care for themselves...or have the love enough to care for their parents...and see them as a burden.. now you expect the government to do so...and get mad if they don't...this society is creating selfish spoiled people...I may be one of them...

I connect deeply with Elon's point, I spent a great deal of my time trying to be an entrepreneur. I was studying the pitch deck, making the BMC, but at the very end, I realized that I was just not an entrepreneur, and even worse, I was trying to be an entrepreneur because that shit cool. I quickly changed my paradigm and positioned myself as a software developer, something that I truly love doing. This game, the game of life is all about self-awareness guys, I have been listening to Gary Vaynerchuk and until I truly realized that I am not wired to be an entrepreneur that I understood Gary's point. This game is truly all about self-awareness, the early waking dumb bird might not win, the smart bird might not win, but the bird that realizes that it is dumb, and decides to wake up early is going to win.

I don't know if I agree with his eating glass comment. He might be speaking from a bubble like perspective. There are all sorts of businesses you can start and different ways of running them. But I do think it is all around good advice to just tell people to toughen up. Don't spend every day of your life looking for the "short cut" to accomplishing something. For example if you want to lose weight, to a certain degree it is better to just accept that it will be difficult and start doing it.

EDIT: coming back here periodically a few times over the years. Still a great video. I have always thought a similar thing; of how so many entrepreneurs don't need added motivation to fulfill their passions. They are already have their motivation, or they are so self-disciplined that they push themselves through. Might be the best advice I learned all my life that I found recently. "motivation only last so long, but you need to develop immense self-discipline to push you through the times you don't want to do it."

Beyond that, though, Elon also says that if starting a business isn't for you (as it isn't for the vast majority) then just chase a position in an industry that you care about and enjoy. Success can be found in multiple ways.
