Should you go to college? Of course, you're absolutely nothing without a college degree. Plus, the best way to get ahead in life is by starting out behind in $100K of debt.

    This is Sally.
Sally has a bachelors liberal arts degree and is currently $40k in debt. She works at Starbucks and makes approximately $25k a year. She believes anyone who did not go to college and has anything less than a 4 year degree is essentially worthless. This month she cannot pay her electric bill.
This if Frank. Frank went to trade school to learn to be an electrician. He has no debt and makes approximately $80k a year. he just turned off Sally's electricity she couldn't pay for.

@@sofitocyn100 ok so the socialist ways your country go by work great for you guys, but Americans have much lower taxes, and we like it that way. also the way our government does things is incredibly wasteful and they spend 3x the money to do the same thing as a private company, which the private company does 5x better (faster, higher quality, just every way possible) and thats why people dont want the government to do things, because they burn too much of our money already. anyone who thinks differently doesnt have a clue how much money the government wastes.

The companies usuallly just want the potential employee to be able to do the job properly and do not care about a degree when they kno its useless, they just require it cuz gov requires it.

$100,000 in debt? Try $300,000 for many college students.
As a former high school teacher, I used to advise my students to go to a community college for prerequisite classes unless they had a scholarship. Secondly, I recommend only moving on with a bachelor's or higher if they knew exactly what they wanted to do and that profession required a certain degree. If they were absolutely positive that they wanted to be a doctor and had the grades/skills to do it, then bite the bullet and go to the best school available. Other than that, get a job, go to trade school, etc. There are a ton of hair dressers, mechanics, etc., who make a good living and enjoy what they do. Higher education, by and large, has become a scam to get money from naïve young people who've been told their whole life that they have to go to college. Go if necessary, otherwise stay away.

He's referring to people who get a gigantic degree just for the joy of acting smarter than everyone else and rubbing it in their faces. He's talking about the false belief that college makes it automatically easier to find a career or have a good life or somehow improves a person's intelligence. it doesn't but if you worked hard in school and you apply those skills of hard work to the real world, you'll be fine. what you put in to college is what you get out of it. has nothing to do with the peice of paper you received. has everything to do with what you actually learned.

When I was in high school I didn't know what I wanted to learn in college. I didn't have a subject in mind. I was the "smart" kid and felt pressured that I had to enroll into college and get a medical degree. Our school had also turned into a charter school so the counselors were pushing for college applications. They didn't care which ones, just pick the 5 you're somewhat interested in and apply. When I finally did pick a university to go to, I told my counselor that it was expensive and it was out of state. Without looking into it, she told me that because I'm from a "low" income family I would get a full ride scholarship. I told her I looked into it and that the school would only cover part of my tuition. While I was lazy at the time to apply for more scholarships, the counselor just kept pushing to apply and accept whatever college.
It was when I graduated high school and walked in the ceremony that it clicked why they were pushing so much. They were announcing how many students were graduating compared to when it was non charter and how many students applied for college compared to the previous graduates.
Mind you the bar was also lowered to graduate. Students who ditched class, disrupt the teacher, didn't put in the effort, they all graduated. While other students, myself included, put effort into our assignments and it felt like I was robbed. Like seeing some girls crying that they graduated and saying omg we made it. All so the school can show the numbers that they made a difference.

That means that in 2018 over 77 million people (over the age of 25) held a bachelor's degree in America. There were 3.7 million fast food employees in the same year. That means that even if somehow every fast food employee held a bachelor's degree (In 2013 only 30% of all fast food workers had at least some college education), then there would still be 73 million college graduates not working in fast food in 2018. So yeah, tens of millions...

Connor Chen Totally get that. If I didn't want to work for Pixar, I might not be so worried about getting a degree (like I'm getting one in graphic design so I have the qualifications to work there) because I could just be an author like my dad, which doesn't require an education. However, just know the reason that our parents push us to get a degree is because they want what's best for us and for us to have the most opportunities available in life, whether they're right or wrong. You can absolutely make a living and be successful in life without a degree in something, but at the same time, it can be limiting in this day and age to not have a degree, because in today's society people care more about education than experience. But then again, my mom barely completed high school but because of her skill as a singer song writer she's become a song writing professor at Belmont. She has no degree in anything whatsoever. These freak things can happen if you are good enough at what you do that you don't require an extensive education. But at the same time, it's very helpful to have a degree in something, because it *can* open more doors. It's just not required if you get what I'm saying 😉

For middle and high school, I always thought the teachers were going to be more passionate and deeply knowledgeable about the topic, and push students to understand things in a way that makes sense and actually provokes thought and is interesting, but the truth is, most teachers are just middle aged moms who wanted to settle down with a reliable job who thought it would be cool at one point to educate the youth, but then lost all interest after the realize that they don't really know what they are doing, and start to give everyone A's for putting in the bare minimum effort, because at least they tried, even if they learned jack.

College is a guaranteed way to get a high paying job. You just have to be smart. You can’t just go to college for anything and you need to really learn while you’re there. I went to my community college for free then took out $10k in loans to get my bachelors. I studied information technology with a focus on software development. Before I graduated I had 2 job offers. I accepted one of them and started working 2 weeks after my graduation earning $65k. Now, 4 years later, I’m at just under $74k and within the next year I’ll have enough experience to command a salary at $90k or more.
I just feel sorry for the people that think they can get any degree, decide to go out of state and go 10’s or 100’s of thousands in debt, to graduate and not find a job. Study something practical at your local schools, study hard and master the material, and benefit. Otherwise, you’re just a mindless sheep that shouldn’t be surprised is in the situation they’re all in.
Also, I’m not some genius. I knew nothing of computer usage outside of gaming and typical millennial computer knowledge before I enrolled. But I saw a degree that opened doors to very high paying jobs, I checked for job openings in my area and found sooooo many, and then checked the nation averages and found something that will reward my time.
Then again, I know people with Master’s degrees who earn $40k a year and owe over $50k in student loans. Be smart people. If you aren’t going to study something with a good ROI then don’t go to school. You can work at a company you like and work your way up.

And the thing about computer programming is that the field has changed a lot, and will continue to change rapidly, which means programmers are constantly retraining themselves. I know people who work in the exact programming jobs you described, making 70k or more, who did *not* get a degree, because information on coding and computer programming is available all over the internet, for free or cheap.

Without a college degree employers will look at your resume and go “no relevant experience, no degree” and then move on to the other 5+ applicants that do have degrees. Like sure, you can be successful without a college degree, but you’re just making it way harder on yourself. Have a plan of what you want to do, take out as few loans as possible, apply for scholarships, and get a degree in something you’re passionate about. It’s way better than the alternative of hoping and praying someone gives you a chance.

@NukuNuku The thing of liberal arts degrees is only part of the problem. While it may be true that you're 100% guaranteed to not find a job if you get a degree in gender studies, there is also a good chance you won't find a job if you study engineering either because of the sheer volume of people who go to college these days. A degree in Whatever would have guaranteed you a job back in the days when less than 10% of the population had college degrees but nowadays almost 50% have degrees even though the percentage of jobs that actually *require* those degrees (in the sense that the things you learned in college will actually be useful for the job itself, not in the sense of the employer being like "well it looks like 90% of the people who applied to this job offer have degrees, I might as well disregard the 10% that don't even though it's just a cleaning job lol") hasn't gone up at all. So yes, it's worse for people who studied liberal arts but it's bad for everyone all around. What they will often tell you to keep you hooked after you've realized this is: "don't worry, *the best and brightest* are still guaranteed to get good jobs at the end so you only won't make it if you're *not* one of the best and brightest, and you totally *are* one of the best and brightest, right?" ;) So even some of the people who go into STEM will get hoodwinked because of their egos and their parents bringing them up with the "You're the best of the best! And someday you're gonna prove it to the world and make me proud!" mentality.
