    The original was the first big lego set I ever owned and it was given as a present. Huge nostalgia and sentimental value for me. I absolutely love this and I only have some nitpicks (eg I would prefer small arches on the sides like the original for the weapon holes, and I would swap the light and dark grey pieces on the ramp). I would definitely buy it at the first opportunity.

    Having watched both reviews of the old and the new back to back I can tell it's pretty amazing how the level of details and features have improved in 34 years. Yet the play value and soul of the set has always been there. Well done Lego and well done Jang!

    While a lot of LEGO sets are indeed overpriced, I don't think that's the case here. The designers clearly went above and beyond to create something that not only honors the past but also just looks like a blast to play with. Which is ultimately the feeling we're all nostalgic for.

    Glad to hear your points defending the baseplate replacement with a proper brick build. They did and excellent job. When I first saw the set, I thought to myself, "Wow, they included the original baseplate!", and was surprised to find it was all pieces. I know Tiago doesn't like that kind of building, but after the excellent Lion Knight build and enjoying seeing the organic shapes emerging from the various bricks as it all slowly builds up, I'm excited for this build as well.

    First off: love JANG, who blesses us with these gorgeous, free (!! we tend to forget this), professional reviews. That said, I wanna critique the idea of calling something "better" when it's from such a different time period. With 34 years (!) between them, any better/worse-comparison, in my opinion, misses the mark. LEGO is a different toy now than it was then. A good question (imo) here could be: "do you like modern LEGO more than vintage LEGO?" My answer would be: vintage LEGO, for a number of subjective reasons. As such, I love the original Eldorado way more than this new one. (Because of nostalgia, but also because the look is much more clean and balanced in it's colour scheme. The new one I think is crowded and a little messy on the eyes.) But I would never say it is better, cause you can't compare two things made with completely different resources and then say "yeah this one's obviously better". I mean... yes, obviously a 2023 model is always gonna be more sleek and detailed et cetera. But saying the old model is worse because it didn't have those same options, is not completely fair.
    Similarly, concerning the building experience being more "genuinely LEGO"... To me, it's not. To me, the is "genuinely LEGO"! They are a magical thing to me. Again, that's mostly nostalgia. But kinda also because it made sets cheaper and more accessible.
    Oh well. Just a sidenote with a hugely enjoyable review as always. Also the full beard looks really good.

    Just built this set myself a couple days ago and I gotta say it’s absolutely gorgeus. Tho I wasn’t around back in 89 I’ve always been fascinated by the old pirates sets. Really happy I was able to get my hands on this guy and barracuda bay (back when that came out) and hope they make more! (A Caribbean Clipper remake would be sick)

    The 2 themes I loved the most as a kid was m-tron/b-tron and pirates. I never got to have any of the big sets as a kid and seeing a resurgence in pirate sets today and building them has brought on so much comforting nostalgia. I can't wait to build this one and add it to the collection.

  • @Benjamin0119
    @Benjamin0119 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This set looked great when I saw the reveal. It looks even better in your review. It's really nicely done. They remade the Eldorado Fortress, and included the great little merchant ship from the Imperial Trading Post. It's the best of both worlds!
    The only nitpicks I could have are I like the old doors better. The top building is also more cramped, but it didn't have anything inside it, either.
    The old raised baseplates were cool, really added some bulk, height, and presence to old sets. They could be a great starting point. But you're right, that you can't do as much with them, and it's less genuine building. Those baseplates could also be fragile, and the clutch power could vary.
    LEGO did a great job of simulating the original shape here, and the hand built cobblestone ramp looks great. This also has modularity.
    How do you think the value compares to Pirates of Barracuda Bay? That set seems larger and more sprawling, but this set is perhaps more dense?
    Either way, I think I will try to save up for this instead of the Lion Knights Castle, or at least save up for it sooner. I love Castle, but I prefer Pirates more, and this is much more attainable at $215 than Lion Knights Castle is at $400.

  • @roddlez
    @roddlez ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for covering the value and inflation aspect of pricing. In 1989, spending $66 on a toy was a big ask. For example, going out to eat dinner, most entrees at sit down restaurants were under $10. A McDonald's Hamburger ran 75 cents, while a Big Mac with medium fries and drink was $3.60 in 1990. The original Eldorado Fortress was the cost of 18 Big Mac meals!!
    Just now, I used McD's smartphone app to get the price of the same Big Mac, medium dries and drink, and it now runs $9.50!! Yarrrgh! So the current Eldorado Fortress-to-Big Mac meal ratio is 23 Big Mac meals, and your point about value of the current set (a MUCH higher value due to a lot more pieces) is on point!
    Thanks, Jang for all your well-considered thoughts on LEGO, new and old!

    I’m sure people came up with thing to do with old palm tree pieces, but I certainly didn’t think of anything as a kid.
    Those modern tree branches have more easy to figure out potential.

    About prices, I've just checked... The new Eldorado forest is $215 in the US (~71000 HUF), 215 EUR in Germany (~80500 HUF) and here in Hungary...
    ...92000 HUF.
    HOW?! WHY?!
    It is a thing that Lego is expensive, why they think that it is a good idea to add extra 60$ to a set where the average salaries is third of US?

    I really like the set. I bought it on the day of release and prefer the square configuration.
    I did do some modifications though. I moved the cannon from the back of the office to the empty tower. And expanded the floor space of the office so the balcony extends all the way round as well expanding its roof. Also used a 8x16 and a 8x6 plate to create two more modular sections to clip into the middle to create a bigger central courtyard.

  • @puffylacike
    @puffylacike ปีที่แล้ว +15

    This is an incredibly successful remake of a wonderful original. I don't miss the baseplate at all. Modularity gives the set a big plus for us adults as well. The price seems ok to me. 200 euros would be an ideal price, but 215 does not seem overpriced to me. I will wait for an offer of some interesting GWP set and then I will definitely order this set. The original set had only 2 small things better. Classic monkey and bending palms. I rate this set 9.8/10. Great review Jang.

    Oh, thats such a nice surprise. I LOVE how they closed up the rocks on the back and that middle section makes for such a good pier. I had no idea when I first saw this set and honestly it's the best upgrade they could give the original while staying very true to it.

    one little detail I like with the new one that wasn't covered. the water is more accurate. Pirates were most active in the Caribbean, and the water is NOT a deep blue down there, it's that more "aqua" color. It helps set the scene a bit more.
    Besides that, I do really wish I had space for this (and Barracuda bay), this is such, such a good set.

  • @Theriverarealm
    @Theriverarealm ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s wild seeing how far Lego has come. As a kid who grew up in the 2000s, I was infatuated with 80s pirate sets, specifically Eldorado and the Black Seas Barracuda. Eldorado has always been on the top of my most wanted things ever list, and it’s wild to see just how much this new set blows the old one out of the water.
    The old one has a special original charm to it that could never be replicated, but nostalgia aside, Lego has come an incredibly long way. Can’t wait to get my hands on this set, only downside is no red beard!

    People will find reasons to complain about this, but if they released THIS set in 1989 people would completely have their minds blown.
    Honestly seeing it at the store, I think this is a reasonable value. Toss in a large GWP and a VIP it’s not that off the mark.

  • @pogney973
    @pogney973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had to get it, cause i have the Barracuda (actually also the Old one), and with some GWP it is okay for the money (even though i did not plan to spend it, but this is just a must have, i know i get so much fun building these). I am all with you, the 80-90 Lego prime is what i love, Castles, Pirates, all the cool Space Themes including classic. Love what Lego is doing recently, Barracuda Bay was awesome, Galaxy Explorer also a must have, after buying too many of Bennys Space Squad. Would also love the Castle, but that is really too much for my budget, and i still have many of the old sets.
    I am with you all, more 1989 Set Remakes! Its milking our nostalgia really hard, but when they deliver, it is worth it to pay way too much for a set you had (or always wanted) as a child.

    Looking forward to getting this one very much. I love these LEGO remixes, been picking them up with great enthusiasm.
    I gotta say, how dare you flip the hands around - are you some kind of monster!? (I've always done that too though lol, perhaps these critics of yours have minifigures confused with minidolls?)
    Another great review Jang

  • @TheStugbit
    @TheStugbit ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your review made me rethink this set a little bit. I thought it would look much worse by looking at the pictures they released before. At least the walls, to me initially they felt much more incomplete. That's not actually the case when we see it in video. The crane also looks smaller, but I wonder if they have chosen the brown color instead of black it would look better because those things were supposed to be made from wood back in those days, right?
    Yet I still wish they went with a new design for the building, though. They could have come with those same similar modular features and made it inspired by the Eldorado still. I wonder how a proper new design of fort from Lego would look like today.
    I was a big fan of their old pirate sets back in the day. They were the most expensive and unaffordable ones, unfortunately.
    Great review as always, Jang. Many thanks.

    At first I always thought Lego's were overpriced but when I thought about it its like
    1) They look amazing *Quality*
    2) Most sets include a bunch of useful spare parts *Quantity*
    3) 99% of sets combine with others as well as off brand sets
    4) Lego sets have TONS of possibilities you can think of
    At the end of the day I feel like they're worth it even if they go to $50, $100, $150 etc and most importantly I feel if you enjoy it go for it

    Hello Jang, I think there is an important aspect that most Americans tend to ignore - sales/VAT tax. As a European/American, I see it every day. E.g., this set is ~10% more expensive in the US compared to Canada since we need to add sales tax. I paid $230 for this set but that translates to $304 CAD. In the EU and Canada, all prices are final. Great and positive video! Thank you very much.

Inevitably, someone comes to me with not just one “repair” but a handful of “repairs”. Would like lego to come out with expansion packs for the set as I would want more foot soldiers and pirates. Finding parts on pick a brick can get difficult (for me anyway) and the shipping time is too long. Great review as always and I look forward to your next video.

      I'm from 1969, but for me Lego from 2004-2018 is vastly superior, except for missing themes such as space, castle and pirates. As it is I'm buying some used sets from this period for my grandsons, and I'm never tempted to buy 80s or 90s, even if I like the theme. With these revival sets they're doing a good job.

    Wow, seriously wow. Yes, the price is high but LEGO's designers have really put a giant amount of love and detail into this sets. This might be the most detailed fortress I've ever seen,
    especially from that time period. A wonderful revival for the Pirate Age, if you ask me. I think I'll buy that.

    Cynics would say it inflates the price, doesn’t a set budget get established BEFORE it gets designed?

    The side by side is very nice. It is like modern lego is at a higher resolution.

    i know people really like the raised baseplates of old, but i personally think that acutally building up the base of the set out of bricks and plates feels more like an authentic Lego experience, not to mention the additional modularity and secrets that are a byproduct of the build style

      And the old palm trees, too? The new ones are okay... But I miss the old ones... They had so much charm!

    Been soo looking forward to this review! I’ve just finished building this myself as it was the only set I failed to collect as a kid when the pirates theme first came out.
    I LOVED the build and the reconfigurable modular elements were an inspired decision.
    Can’t wait to see your thoughts!
    Take care👍🏻😎

      Just to add; price-wise the value is reasonable. But; build and enjoyment wise is off the chart. Several times I caught myself grinning and sitting back and looking at it. Eldorado Fortress! Finally! And I’m building it! Makes this a rather special set for me

    I can't think of any good reason why Bag 1 isn't its own Lego set.
    (It's the bag with the ships)

    According to Bricklink the original set first came with a variant where the flags were all stickers. Bricklink has sticker listings for Caribbean Clipper, Black Seas Barracuda, Sabre Island, and Eldorado Fortress from the first wave of Pirates sets, They switched over to prints midproduction and it looks like most of the smaller sets went all in on printed flags. I only know this because I was looking at inventories at some point and thought the stickered flags were weird and unexpected... it's kinda similar to how Classic Space men were initially stickered torsos during the initial production run for certain sets.
