    For a sense of the intensity of the Unification Wars, I always come back to one line from Dreams of Unity: "Even when the oligarchs of Kievan Rus had rained atomics from their black citadel and bathed the Sibir ice plain in radioactive fire, Kabe had advanced." They were freaking saturation bombing the Emperor's forces with nuclear weapons, and lost.

    • @stephenwood6663
      @stephenwood6663 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      One of the key purposes of power armour is that - in all but its very earliest iterations - it isn't just armour, it's a fully-sealed enviro-suit. Kievan Rus' dirty bombs would almost certainly have been enough to annihilate a maniple of Thunder Warriors if they scored a clean hit, but their fallout would not have been enough to prevent power-armoured troops from advancing (although it *would* have stopped any more lightly-armoured auxiliaries in their tracks, obliging the Emperor's best troops to go in unsupported).

    • @Dimetropteryx
      @Dimetropteryx หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@stephenwood6663 The Mark 1 "Thunder" armor wasn't fully sealed. That was a new feature for the Mark 2 "Crusade" pattern armor which the Astartes got after the Unification Wars.
      But to be completely fair, that of course doesn't mean that the Mark 1 armor couldn't be sealed if necessary, it just hasn't been depicted in lore or art.

    • @stephenwood6663
      @stephenwood6663 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Dimetropteryx There *is* some inconsistency in depictions of Thunder armour. We're told that the legs of this armour design are typically not power-armoured at all, but are enclosed in tough padded breeches. However, more recent depictions of Thunder Warriors usually show them with fully-enclosed leg protection.
      To my mind, it makes the most sense to look at this as having been a process: 800 years is, after all, a long time to wage a war.

    • @Dimetropteryx
      @Dimetropteryx หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@stephenwood6663 Official art has them consistently with exposed faces and occasionally with the arms exposed as well, not counting the actual armor plates. Only in Valdor: Birth of the Imperium have I found a mention of face covering, and that was just an iron grille. There are also two famous drawings, one of a captain with a mask, and IIRC an Astartes in Mk1 armor with what seems like a much later pattern helmet, but I believe that was concept art more than anything.
      edit: after a bit of investigation, the latter piece of concept art is a drawing by John Blanche and features, according to the caption that is for some reason always cropped out, a "Space Marine elite guard typical of the veteran warriors of the Great Crusade."

    Interesting that the Unification Wars took so much longer than the Great Crusade. If we think about thought, the emperor didnt have Knights or Titans to call upon, also no fleet to crack open defensive hive structures, all he had was some proto space marines so I think time wise that makes sense.
    We are also assuming the Emperor's power level is always the same, but what if he needed tech of some kind from the Techno-barbs to eventually become as strong as we think he is.
    In Valdor only at the very end of Unification did they start the Golden Throne project, which could have empowered the Emperor and/or given him directions for obtaining even more power from Age of Strife planets... ones that were far easier to conquer as an Imperium rather than just a Super Dude and His Supermen.

      Seems to me that the TW were a stripped down version of the Custodes. Everything unnecessary left out, and plenty of compromises to increase the number of facilities across Terra that could make them. What's strange to me is the idea that the TWs supposedly were proto-Astartes, since they had nothing in common as far as their creation goes. TWs don't seem to have any of their special abilities, and none of their extra organs.

      Custodes are essentially Humanity 2.0, whereas Thunder Warriors and Astartes are essentially living weapons without a wider social life or purpose. I love that you emphasised that the word "techno barbarian" didn't mean that they were akin to mad max or fallout factions. Sure, there were raider factions and tribes that may have resembled the above mentioned factions, but terra at the time of the end of the age of strife was already completely rebuilt. The major nuclear event that destroyed the remaining age of tech factions happened in late m25 early m26. So in that time period when the populations of terra were recovering from the apocalyptic level destruction of their society, im sure there would of been fallout like tribes of technologically advanced barbarians that fought small scale conflicts over territory and resources. But by the time the emperor starts the unification process, nearly 3000 years have passed. Terra was repopulated, with numbers in the 10s of billions, and was now being governed by multiple super powers, that weren't too dissimilar to our real world powers. Real world countries of today like russia, china, the us, and the western european powers would be classed as less advanced techno barbarians if they existed in the same time period.
    The nation states of terra at this time also traded with rogue trader factions that ran goods to and from the many other nations and super powers in the sol system. Some had somewhat limited relations with mars, saturn, and jupiter, while other terran factions fought minor conflicts against them. The selenar of Luna were a major super power at the time, and traded gene tech with the terran powers.
    it took emps so long to acrue enough millitary and economic power to bring the techno barbarians to heel because of just how divided and complicated the situation on terra was. He also had to do it without some trigger happy nut job simply unleashing a weapon that would all but destroy terra, and thus delay his plans further.
