It seems like just yesterday. It probably was Oct 1st, 1959. After dinner my dad took me to the Chevy dealer. It was dark but we went out back to view several new Corvairs. One of them had a sign in it's windshield saying 'don't drive, bad transmission'. Two days later on Oct 3rd, when it was first allowed to sell them, dad bought a new Corvair for my mother. A Corvair 700 four door with auto trans. In New York State winters it was great. We lived on a hill and weight over the drive wheels helped. That Corvair also had a gasoline heater which got hot in less than 30 seconds, not an excessive amount of heat yet everyone thankful to have it quickly in winters. Dad never said so, but he must have been jealous of his gift to my mother, as he bought a second Corvair just two weeks later for himself. Overall our family had a total of 5 Corvairs through the years. The convertibles being the best driving/riding of all.

Back in the 70s I was a 20 year old Corvair mechanic. Damn I loved those cars. I worked for a guy that opened a place called Corvair Corner in Newport Beach we could pull a engine in 10 minutes and overhaul it in 45 reinstall it in another 10 minutes. We had the setup’s throughout the shop. One guy stripping all the sheet metal, me and another rebuilding engines all day. One guy was overhauling carbs. We had it all together. Have a great time
Rudy they were a death trap so be careful with it. My mom died in one my dad’s best friend sided in that accident too as well as his girlfriend. That accident was in 1962. In a Monza spider of the same year. Sorry for the downer but just be careful.

On my last few trips to Utah I've seen some Maverick stations carrying "clear", ethanol free, gas. I can't remember which grade it was in (85/87/??). So hopefully with that product available some of these older vehicles and sensitive fuel systems will have carburetor and other engine components last longer.

My brother loved his Corvairs . . . he was a collector. Had 3 vans and two sedans . . . no station-wagons. He taught me how to carefully tension the circuitous fan belt so it would still turn the generator & fan without prematurely dying. I decided my 1964 Dodge D-100 Town-wagon was all I needed in the four-wheel vehicle category & added several motorcycles over the years to my vehicle experience.
Now ? Am down to a 2015 Nissan Leaf (simple like the Corvair without the pesky fan-belt) and a 1990 Honda PC-800. take care, rh

Light turned green We left him at the light,, He stalled it and was very embarrassed we beat him. Thanks, Rudy, for helping this old guy remember the good old times. Upgraded it to 14" wheels (Crager SS mags) and added a hood tach (shout-out to the GTO Judge). Traded it for a used 1968 Ford Galaxy 500 GT (2dr fastback, 428, 4spd). Wish I had BOTH cars today...

Rudy, That triangle cross-section glass bottle originally had an alcohol solution in it that was to be added to water for the windshield washer. It was supposed to prevent freezing and also act as a solvent to clean the glass. The 1962 Oldsmobile, I had in High School, had the same thing. It was listed in the owners manual and mine still had a readable label.

My dad and I restored many Corvairs in the late 70s - early 80s and flipped them. You could pick them up dirt cheap. He once purchased a 65 Monza Four Door for $100 that the owner was fed up with because it was "burning oil" my dad gave him $100 and then I followed him to a parking lot two streets over where he pulled out a speedometer cable and ran it up and down through the )2 Sensor Pipe on top of the motor and that fixed it. He sold it later in the week for $500. The lakewood is a pretty rare model and that one looks really good.

My 63 Corvair Monza was that teal color or whatever they called it. No rust though, we don't have rust in Southern California.

Oh my, seeing the ‘air conditioning’ took me back to my ‘63’ Plymouth Belvedere. Right down to the vents at your feet. That’s sooo cool. Pun intended. 🙂

Janelle, if you are out on the highway and you have that vent window open, hopefully you don't have what happened to my mother happen to you, we were on the road going on vacation and all of a sudden she had a dead bird end up in her lap. Apparently it hit one of the vent windows and got deflected into her lap. It's good to see you back on the channel again.

I became a Corvair fan the day my grandmother came home with a brand new 4 door sedan in 1960.
