- Today we are getting ready to drive this rare, 1961 Corvairs Lakewood wagon over 1000 miles to a Corvairs event, called the fan belt toss!
First, we need to fix the leaky engine and then moving onto the interior with new carpet and seats!
We have breaking news! People are trying to impersonate me and scam you, specifically on Facebook. To check and see if you’re following the correct Facebook account, please use this link: www.facebook.c...

Your Dad should have enough parts in his containers to get you on your way. Seats look real good.
Pretty sure Matt has one of the biggest collections of Corvair parts in the country at this point, no doubt.
Safe to say that anything Rudy might need is available, with the probability that he can choose from multiple versions of any parts he desires. Probably available for free, or at most, the cost of laying a few welds down on the Bombi.
The Corvair is looking good! I hope that was not a serious problem at the videos end. Thanks for taking us along Rudy and Janelle. Thumbs UP !👍
You should turn it into the Morvair II.
the combo of the 2 of you working together is really enjoyable just a good chill video to unwind to
You two working together is fun to watch! I hope there is nothing serious going on, but am sure we will find out in the next video. Thank you for sharing
Nice Video!! It's really cool seeing Janelle getting her fingers dirty helping out in the shop! She's a keeper for sure!! Hope your problem in the back is a simple and easy fix!!
Great to see Janelle Again!
It always nice to see her on the channel
Love watching the two of you working on stuff!! Such good vibes
Fortunately the GM design for pushrod tubes is a little easier to work with to change the seals than the VW pushrod tubes.
Something I have used for years on seal like those is Ez-Turn Lubricant. Fuel and oil will not wash it off so it really seals well. It was originally made for aircraft engines. It was called Parker Fuel Lube.
Corvair Must haves in trunk at all times ,
4 qts oil,
2 Fanbelts,
Tube seals,
Extra Generator, or brushes. Tools
Don't forget the rear end Drive Lines brake systems steering line drive box electrical system exhaust system😮😂😂 just busting balls
U forgot a spare pos complete corvair in tow for parts
Good morning Rudy I respect how you are teaching Janelle the old school way of doing things.
Since she is learning when it comes to working on cars. Part of the learning is the dirty jobs that usually the people who are learning get stuck with doing
Rudy, watching the two of you together makes us smile.
Reminds me of my wife and I.
That is awesome having a lady that knows her way around a car 👍👍👍👍👍
Nice Corvair rehab. We would like to see more of it.
I had a 64 Corvair Monza Spyder and a 64 Corvair Monza. I used aviation grade 70 oil from Quaker State and it fixed the oil leakage issue. Do not know what SAE that matches. The reason I did that is the Corvair motor is made like an aircraft motor (4 cycle, air cooled, opposed cylinders). The Spyder had well over 100,000 miles when I sold it and as I remember, the Monza was in the 70,000 mile range. Both were running just fine including the Spyder's turbo when I sold them. I did have a few belts break from wear over the years but did not have one spin off. Was told not to over tighten the belt.
Rudy, be nice to that woman. She's a keeper.
I had a ‘64 Corvair that was clean as a whistle. New gaskets and lock washers on the oil pan. Close attention to the valve cover bolt tightness. Constant monitoring of course.
Hey Rudy, don't forget the maintenance the distributor Pop's had trouble when he picked up his Corvair and drove it home🤯
Sure wish I could join you at the GWFBT but my shoulders aren't strong enough yet after the replacement surgery I recently underwent. Always a good time, w/ lots of cool Corvairs and lots of parts being sold/swapped. Your father would really enjoy the event, as a collector of all things Corvair. Enjoy yourselves - I'm totally envious.
A little ATF and those door hinges will be SO happy! Very nice to see you putting this older classic back on the road. Thanks for the video.
Awesome job you two are great together 😊
If the pushrod tube seals are good, and there is still a leak on the driver's side, you should look at the seals between the oil cooler and the engine. Mine were fried. Major leak.
Great video! Rudy, you got you a great one. And the Corvair is nice too. Love seeing the two of you working together.
Frunk is also for the spare tire 😂 Push rod tunes were always the worst leakers.. 500 miles each way and NO AC... a new engine head... probably because the valve seat in the head came loose and let go... another chronic and almost predictable flaw in an otherwise really nice engine... 🙂 We had a shop in Winnipeg, Mb CA that would take and weld the heads, and re-install the valve seat on the damaged head 🙂 our gang had a spare set of valve covers that we cut the top off of so you could adjust the lifters (on a horizontally opposed engine) without spilling oil everywhere... Lots of luck after you silence the noise at MORR 🙂
Seats & carpet look great you should find all the Corvair parts you need at MORR have a safe fun trip, thank's for sharing God bless ❤️😉👍
As a former Corvair owner....they all leak oil. It either the oil cooler, push rod tubes, or the oil pan. One thing about it, the engine wont rust, or the concrete floor where you park the car.
This reminds me of the constant replacement of push rod tube seals in the porsche engines where I used to work in Nashville. We kept the two piece collapsable tubes & seals on the shelf because it was such a common issue.
A car ahead of its time. Technology caught up to seals that prevent them from leaking.
Ahh the joys of youth…..doing a major service with no oils and parts just before a long trip the next morning ….been there decades ago 😅….I do things differently these days 😅
I remember the Corvairs well. It wasn't so much of a concern about turning turtle as Nader claimed, it was their well-known reputation as leakers. That and their power was sub-par at the advent of the muscle-car era. Still, they were good runaround vehicles if you didn't mind topping off the oil every 100 miles or so or replacing the fanbelt as needed (and tended to be needed fairly frequently).
The Corvair fanbelt has a finicky adjustment: when cold, adjust the belt tension so you can just spin the fan w/o the belt moving, then you're just right. Been driving 'Vairs most of my life. With the advent of Viton O-rings, that pushrod tube leakage problem is no longer an issue.
Oh, is THAT why the event is called the Fan Belt Toss?
Ralph Nader-Unsafe at any speed. It’s my recollection the easy fix for the so called problem was maintaining tire pressures at the factory recommended specifications.
@@garyjohnson6640 As you stated, there was a pressure differential of about 10PSI less in front than in the rear that was absolutely necessary for proper steering control. Without that differential, the Corvair had a tendancy to understeer and send you off the road in turns or spin you. The later models were absolutely a joy to drive through the twisties w/ its revise suspension, similar to the Vette's suspension of the same time.
Her question was legit. You said if the left side is brown, no work needed on the right. Black on the left and both sides need work. Left ended up being orange. Good call getting after them all before 6 AM the next day lol.
Good luck Rudy can't wait to see part 2 of this adventure.
I hope you make/made it to the Fan Belt Toss without any problems. I haven't been to the Belt Toss since 1997, where I brought my 1968 Ultravan. I further hope that you made/make it back safely, and without problems. l really like the wagons!
my neighbor had a covair coupe, when I was growing up...pretty cool cars
When you started on the oil and trans pans. I thought to myself you need to talk to your dad before you leave. The seats really look nice.
My Grandfather won one of those ,(new of course) . A few years later he traded it in for a '64 Impala SS , triple black , it was cool . First time I ever went over 70 MPH .
Well u need to change the push rod tube seals then the oil cooler seals! Those seats look amazing!
I had a dozen corvairs back in the 90’s. Turbo spyder n corsa convertibles. Dropping valve seats was always an issue…
I had a 61 or 62. Never leaked a a drop except at the dip stick. The rubber seal around the stick where you pull it out to check the oil. It would blow oil on the fan belt and the belt would come off.
If you break down Matt's off road recovery would be the best place to break down!!✌️🇺🇲
So kool to see Janelle helping you rudy
Janelle you need to get you a fan belt an use it on Rudy lol
Hey Rudy... I think that the two airplanes you saw on the way back from Palm Springs were CV-22B Ospreys. A complicated airplane that can take off like a helicopter and then, tilt it's huge propellers and fly like a regular plane. However they have been having problems (and crashes) with them ever since the military put them in service, with several deaths caused by these problems.
Coming together nicely.
Take heart Janelle. You won't have to be an apprentice forever. Keep track of your hours.
I HAD A 1963 Corvair when I was in the service for4 years & put 150 thousands miles on it.
Good luck ! Thanks for sharing !
There’s a guy in Hurricane that’s has lots of parts for those. Plus he has a yellow one painted and modified for off road recoveries. Oh wait that’s your dad never mind. I never knew about the Fan belt toss.
This lady is a keeper.
I have 62' greenbriar van thar I got when I was 15 I'm 44 now and it's been sitting since 2005 when I broke my back and now my son and I going to start rebuilding it this coming spring we've started buying all of the parts for a full rebuild
I installed seat belts in my 1960 VW bug. Long before they were required.
I had a 65 Corsa loved it.
I think it's looking amazing 👏.
I had a 1966 corvajr monza 2 xoor automatic man I loved that car
I hope you and Matt are driving together in both your corvairs!
Roadtrip music suggestion. Agent Orange: Unsafe at Any Speed.
Rudy you are a Lucky Man to have a woman that doesn't mind working on Vehicles and A Beautiful one at that. Treat her good they are hard to come by. Alot of Ladies don't like getting greasy or working on cars. Like watching your videos they make me laugh
My parents bought 1 new I'm not sure what year it was and of course no seat belts we travel all over Michigan and the east coast in it the warmest place to be in that thing was in the very back over the engine it was nice and warm there then my parents bought a new 1967 9 passenger Chevy wagon
Wish I knew about the show in October.. maybe next year..
I need to go to the Palm Springs one of these years. Usually go to the nationals. Own a '65 Monza Convertible.
The cliff hanger!
Corvair engines are notorious for leaking at both ends of the push rod tubes.
Reminds me a lot of old aircooled VWs😂
5:42 danggg.....that oil pan...
Hey guy your lady is so cool I cannot believe it you're a lucky man
An unusual striped seat color selection. Gray black carpet. Changing the paint color? Packing tools and spare parts?
That’s a pretty sweet car man coming along great!
Another known problem that I ran into on a long trip in a Greenbriar was the distributor drive gear. The pin securing it to the shaft sheared and it..."quit." On the spot...beside the freeway. Something to be aware of.
First car I remember my parents having is the sedan I loved that car
Oil leaks help preserve pommie cars ,have owned several MG s a a Healy Sprite, best protection against rust!! Mal in au.
Personally I would have put sound deadening material on the floors. makes a world of difference.
Red o rings are viton as well 👍
I REPLACED MY PUSH ROD TUBE OIL RING SEALS WITH VITON HIGH TEMERATURE ONES .
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family
adjust the valve lash.
The black seal is probably Buna-N made from nitrile. Viton is much better to use.
I like to say a couple's of
thing's b4 l go on this trip
/watch this video, (1) is
take the car on a drive
around the block just to
warm the oil up , so when
you drain the oil it flow's
out better , (2) the rust in
your trunk needs removing
& a new piece welded in.
Please don't delay repair.
🤔🧐🙄😮😮😮😮☹️☹️
I might have missed it, as I tend to listen and glance at the screen... did Rudy ever show us what's in that old suitcase in the back?

Happy Thanksgiving...
Where you all been? Hope all is well for you all...
I would love to see this car fully restored
With the engine in the back, doesn't it add heat inside the wagon? BTW, nice ending to the video.😂
I'm thinking I want a Corvair now!
Not bad ⚡️
This is the US version of the Skoda 120 :D
Whats in the old suitcase i keep seeing in the back?

New tyres? Wheelbearings? New hoses in the enginebay?
RAD could use an "outtro"?.👀
should of inserted a clip from smokey and the bandit "we ain't ever not made it yet"
I’ve never seen a covair that didn’t leak oil 😉
