    I used Bondo to fill in a big hole in a bowl I'm turning and it worked great but it's so hard I have to sharpen very often.

      Thanks for watching, the CA and the filler i use in the video end up cracy hard too, but as long the result is fine the ekstra sharpning works :-) have a great day and stay safe :-)

    I recently used glitter and wood glue. The result wasn’t perfect but it came out better than I expected. I knew before doing this that CA glue would have been a better choice but I had none available. I applied too much glitter and glue and turning it afterwards was a challenge. I wanted to sand it off to avoid tear-out but that wasn’t effective.

    What does the sanding sealer do?

    • @WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP
      @WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nate.. The sanding sealer causes the wood to rise slightly and the dust does not settle so easily in the abrasive material. and you get the last detail out of your sanding. Thank you for watching .. stay safe 😀😀

    I wanted to see if it was like what I do, and I'm happy its close. I push baking soda and epoxy colorants into the cracks then pour a careful trickling of ca glue to wet the baking soda. The baking soda becomes like a rock and also makes the ca glue insta dry.

    I have made green bowls for 55 years…. When I find a crack I like to grind them a little bit and grind below the surface.. I use like a fordom or dremel with small bit.. This allows the resin I use to patch them to fill in the crack and is less likely to be surface only.. The effort to just patch surface causes many to fall out while turning or sanding.. The bowl is very pretty and using a crotch of the tree is great.. When my bowls are finished while green I use paste was to slow down drying and shrink wrap.. i weigh the bowl and put results on the base.. I fill the grain with paste wax and shrink wrap.. I keep weighing them over time and eventually like you I turn the round and if crack I treat as I said above.. great project..

    Interesting effect! It looks a bit like crystal inclusions in a rock - a much more subtle look than the solid colour one gets using resin. By the way, your lathe was rocking all over the place at the beginning; have you thought about adding some gravel sacks as ballast?

    • @WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP
      @WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the look too of the glitter compared with the full color.. and yes I think it is time to Refill my legs with more sand :-) and some more ballast .. it is just one of the thinks you won’t but not get around too :-) thanks for watching .. and stay safe😀😀😀

    Interesting technique. I use a similar technique using 5-minute epoxy and mica powder, mostly because I don't like using CA glue. It does require some patience for drying time as I usually leave it for several hours after filling.
    I'm shocked at the amount of vibration you have on your lathe, even after the bowl has been balanced. You can see the lathe move every time you touch the bowl with a tool. Might I suggest building a much sturdier, heavier stand for your lathe and getting rid of those spindly little legs? I don't think filling the legs with sand is going to help much given how they are attached to the lathe. Even some cross bracing on the legs would help if your not inclined to build a sturdier stand.

    • @WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP
      @WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Steve, thank you for the comment and for watching 😀 I did modify my lathe stand and I have put 190 kilo ekstra on it, the real problem though was the rubber feet that the legs was born with, as soon as I removed them 80% of the vibration was gone even without the 190 kilo .. but now after the added weight it is a totally different lathe to work with, why I did not do it before :-) well it just one of this things 😀😀 again thank you very much for spending time watching and for the comment I really appreciate it, Stay safe and have a great day .. 😀😀

    My first reaction was wondering why you didn't fill the hole in the bottom and the chip on the edge? . After seeing the finished product, I wouldn't do it any other way. The small amount of color in the cracks adds so much accent. I have been using white glue and sand for small worm hole and inclusions. I have used 5 minute epoxy as well mixed with dye and glass beads to add color and sparkle. I will have to try glitter.
    I am curios though, did you do anything to stabilize the larger hole? Excellent piece! Thanks for sharing.

    You took one hell of a risk turning that before gluing in some manner but it turned out ok. I’d recommend not using accelerator on the CA but rather coat with more glitter then leave overnight. Accelerator makes it dry on top and if it is a deep crack it will remain liquid underneath for quite some time. Start turning straight away and as you break through dry surface you then get to wear the wet CA

    A beautiful effect and easy to apply👌. The end result resembles a metallic resin.
    You don't have the problem now that glitters are all over the workshop?😬
