Earlier Sonic games had an environmental theme about saving innocent creatures from being used by a mad scientist to further his goals, now Sonic's the one using innocent creatures to further his own goals. Sonic Team completely lost track of things.

@@ninetailedsamurai3536 I like colors. I know what you're thinking. "You don't know quality because you're a modern fan" I hate how 50% of the Adventure/Gamecube fans hate modern fans. I can tell you're one of those 50%. SEGA is remastering colors because it was only available on the Wii. Also, Colors got one of the highest ratings by mainstream media for sonic games. I love colors, in fact, it's my favorite sonic game. I'm speaking for many people here, so let us like what we like.
@@randybudderknubs5152 Well, I dislike Colors so I'm not gonna bother going for the remastered version. If you want to play it, go play it. I'll stick with my PC versions of Adventure 1 & 2.
Your last point is pretty interesting in that Sonic has gone too comedic or too cartoony, wacky and borderline cringy. But, I once remembered people saying the past stories in sonic games were too dark for the colorful characters. Honestly I think the stories of Sonic games should be more like the Sam Raimi spider-man movies; has some dark and sad moments but was still filled with cool and heroic moments too. Idk, that's all I got...
The only games that can realistically be perceived as "too dark" are Shadow the Hedgehog and '06, which are widely considered to be not very good. Adventure 1, 2, Black Knight and Unleashed are all examples of what Sonic stories should be: a narrative that takes itself seriously, but has a mostly lighthearted tone, and the characters are capable of changing their mood and demeanor based on what is appropriate for the current scene they are in.
A decent mix of things like adventure, humour, emotion and suspense! Practically every good franchise manages this! Heck, I'd even argue that Sonic Adventure, SA2, even Sonic Heroes managed this! Oh but that's right, this is the Sonic series! Say anything nice about it and you're suddenly labelled as a weirdo furry freak who draws awful fan art and fan characters, and writes cringey fan fiction!
That point you made concerning Sonic's quips and wisecracks COMPLIMENTING the action, tension, or excitement, rather than distracting from it, is spot-on. More people should make that distinction.
Yeah dude, Sonic at his best basically works like Spider-Man. He knows when to take things seriously, sure, but even when things are at their darkest you'll still find him quipping and making jokes at the villain's expense because A.) it's his preferred way of keeping his enemies off guard and angry, which in turn makes them easier to defeat, and B.) that's just who he is, at the end of the day.
Well, they have some sense in the Sonic lore, i don't know if you know Sonic runners ( in case you don't, It was a mobile infinite runner game ), in this game there was a story mode, and at one point of the story the wisps say that they wanted to stay in sonic's world because they liked it or something. Yeah, they look strange and are trapped, for some... Reason, but they have a reason in the lore
Most of my pet peeves is how some characters are written. Previous, not grammy award winning characters but ones with meat to them, have had that meat stripped away and are made into their most basic form. My favourites include: Tails: The loley tech sidekick Shadow: The moody brooder who doesn't have friends Knuckles: The Blockhead and Sonic: The guy who just stands there cracking jokes.
Also don't forget: Silver: Just another hedgehog whose future is always doomed. Metal Sonic: Not allowed to have a personality outside his Neo form. Cream: So I don't exist in the games anymore? The Chaotix: Literally just there... and very little else...
@@lynxfresh5214 Wait are you talking about the recent sonic games or most sonic games because I’m pretty sure OP was talking about recent sonic games or the sonic games from the 2010s.
Using chao instead of wisps would be fantastic. In Sonic Chronicles, there were different species of chao that gave the characters unique abilities. Sonic team could implement something like that into a future game where depending on how you raise the chao ,it could grant you power ups.
yeah, but since all of that lawsuit problems with P*nders, Sonic Chronicles is not canon and everything in there will be ignored to avoid problems with him, since apparently even if you buy the game, part of the money will go to P*nders, instead of going to BioWare and Sega (ironic since it's their game, but this entire thing is boring and I'm not gonna talk about it) In summary: they're ignoring this game FOREVER, it's kinda sad because it looks like a decent game (except for the soundtrack, it's shit)
@@shushiiiiiiiiii Nah the gameplay's pretty bad too. My sis had it, and I can tell you firsthand you can't plan things for shit in that game, defeating the whole point of an RPG. The only thing good about Chronicles is it did its lore homework and provides a pretty decent story as a result (except for the cliffhanger ending obviously, but that kind of ending setup is the starting point of literally half the plots in the franchise sooo...), yet we have to throw that away because one whiny manchild from the 90's and early-to-mid 2000's claimed it was infringing on his work that he wasn't even the first one to think of (that honor literally goes to an obscure French comic he wouldn't have known about).
The lore went hard during the adventure series with takal, shadows death, and eggmans relative. But in recent games I feel as if these stories went unfinished. Maybe it's their intent but I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure this has been answered in comics, but if they want to have better games it would be best to finish that same serious lore in the games.
Aw, yeah! This is happenin’! For me: 1. Pontaff-era storytelling 2. Classic Sonic bias 3. Anything related to Sonic Forces EDIT: How did I forget the Deadly Six on here? Uh, replace 3 with this, and that can be 4.
@@fnaf2isthegoat75 because are people who take them seriously, why do you think the sonic adventure series was suddenly seen as a "unlikable glitchy mess". The game grumps birthed the ideology "that sonic was never good", "that sonic can only be enjoyed ironically", and it's got to the point were sega it's self started pandering to that ideology.

Honestly, what surprised me the most is that I didn't *completely* hate them in the comics. Like, I only *slightly* wanted to rip them out of the fabric of reality. Guess that just goes to show the quality of the writing in those comics.
My three least favourite things in the Sonic Franchise are (In reverse order): 3: Classic Sonic in Sonic Forces. (It tarnished the excellent Sonic Mania) 2: Overuse of the Wisps and Zavok beyond Sonic Colours and Lost World. (This is a joint problem for me) 1: The comedic tone of the entire "Meta Era" of Sonic and the Character Assassination of Sonic's Friends, ESPECIALLY Tails and Shadow! (Tails is now a wimp that is VERY reliant on Sonic and Shadow is now an aggressive Edgelord with no feelings. Their Adventure Era personalities are way better and they MUST return!)
I feel like Classic Sonic's appearance in Forces is a symptom of a different problem: Sega's overreliance on nostalgia. It also affected Mania itself, by not letting the devs make more original zones and instead being forced by Sega to reuse a bunch of zones from past games, which is why I don't like Mania anywhere near as much as any of the classic games, because those kinds of decisions scream lack of confidence. Now that I think about it, maybe the overreliance on nostalgia is itself another symptom of a different problem, Sega's lack of confidence leading them to resctrict creative freedom on the people working for the franchise, but I digress.
@@inendlesspain4724 Yeah, overusing nostalgia is like a heavy ball and chain holding Sonic back from his full potential as in Mania I loved all the new Zones especially Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon when played as Knuckles as he gets his own Act 1. And while I do like Green Hill and Chemical Plant Zones, they're being overused too as in the 2010's we got 7 versions of Green Hill and 5 versions of Chemical Plant (I'm counting the different levels in Sonic Forces as their own levels).
The reason they keep adding Zavok to literally any and every piece of sonic media is that lizuka just wants to push the “light hearted and wacky” agenda to the series, and thinks zavok is a good role model
Role model? He tried to sucked te very life essence out of a planet. His actions cause the implied desths of Amy and Knuckles! A good role model for who?!
@ALLAN LOUIS JEUNE Yes and no. While yes there are corporate mandates in place, I'm sure, Iizuka is the director of the series and so his job is to direct. They wouldn't have given him the job i everything he said about or did with the series was going to be nothing but what corporate told him to verbatim. There'd be no point in having him in the position at that point. Iizuka has things he likes and dislike and directs things towards that, just like Yji Naka did.
The third gripe is the one that resonated with me the strongest, and it's the reason I liked the Meta Era the least out of the last three decades. Between Sonic Boom and the Sonic Twitter's memes, it's like SEGA's telling us, "Yeah, we get it. We're bad. We're not even gonna front. We'll just laugh about it and keep doing our thing." Whatever happened to the SEGA that liked to push against the norm? What happened to the SEGA that practically bled confidence? What happened to the SEGA who was unafraid to take risks, and found themselves excelling in ways nobody would have imagined? The SEGA I used to know wouldn't have laid down and held the L. They sure as heck wouldn't have made a character design that is blatantly a rip-off of Bowser (Zavok, why do you even exist? Leave already!). They'd even said quite recently that they aren't the same SEGA that we'd had back in the 2000s and early 2010s, and that they're taking the slow approach with game releases. And yet, back when they pushed games out on a yearly basis, the titles from that era were comparatively more enjoyable...strange, isn't it? Moral of the story: it's not about how much time you have, it's about what you *do* with that time that counts. P.S. I was excited for Sonic Prime, and I still am, but the memory of Sonic Boom's existence is now making me anxious as to how well it's going to turn out.

@Thom Oh no, Generations is good! It's length was, however, caused by the fact it had just one yer of development. It could have been better. It's still amazing, but could have been longer and better.
I feel the fact that the only playable characters in it were Sonic and... well Sonic is something of a mark against it too. This is a pretty interesting video! But what about Unleashed? The story wasn't dark, but it was serious, the perfect theme for a Sonic story if you ask me. Oh, and the thumbnail is the greatest piece of art of this Generation.
Unleashed isn't exactly considered part of the Meta Era and Chaomix has previously shown his enjoyment with Unleashed. Thinking about it, Unleashed had a similar tone to Heroes. The Adventure games may be a bit darker, but aren't that different either. All generally have a similar blend of light-hearted fun mixed with action and drama.
@@dabluepittoo-aqua4213 I see. I agree with the Adventure games blending a serious story with light-hearted fun, and I think those kinds of stories are the best the series has seen.
I personally feel like SA2 managed to strike a really nice middle point. It could be cool, dark and lore heavy, but still had iconic as hell moments and scenes that still make me laugh and smile like an idiot. It was the perfect balance, it's what I think all Sonic stories should aim for as far as tone goes. Action, lore, emotion, arcs, great characterization, fun moments, it had it all. But most importantly, the most essential thing that I think a Sonic story needs, was there. It was overtly present in almost all of the games up until the meta era: Sincerity. No ironic meme self degradation bullshit, those games were completely genuine and sincere regardless of anything, and all who worked on them clearly tried their absolute hardest, even if it didn't turn out too good in the end. There was always an honest attempt, regardless of what they had to work with. But with the new stories and games, there is evidently barely any effort or sincerity left. The heart is clearly missing.
Very nice video. My personal nit-pick is also that sonic has little to no depth now.. I think sa2 level of darkness was good and the quips were great! But now everything feels so childish and lighthearted for no reason other than "we dont want to be called edgy like we ere because of shadow's game"
Something funny I was just thinking about your opinion on designs of the Wisps and Zeti looking out of place in the Sonic universe is that as someone who was introduced to the series through the Classic era, I remember a time when Big the Cat and the Chao looked unusual for the series. Not that I didn't like them, I always loved the Chao and wish the Chao Garden would return. I just remember seeing their artwork for the first time and thinking they didn't look like Sonic characters. These days they've been in the series for so long (even with their roles diminished) that we kind of take them for granted.
My biggest thing I can’t stand is “SoNiC iS jUsT fOr KiDs”. Sonic is supposed to be a series that any age can enjoy. The lighter tone stories and constant sad jokes really get under my skin. Another big thing I can’t stand is how some of the characters are portrayed, especially Shadow and Tails. Tails being portrayed as a huge coward and Shadow a complete edge lord. The Tails we know would still be scared but push on regardless because he believes in himself, instead of running away and calling Sonic for help. And Shadow sure he can be edgy at times but that’s not what he’s all about. He’s a character that redeemed himself and found his own purpose. Not some edge lord who doesn’t have friends because that’s not cool. Ok rant over lmao, I just really hope the Sonic series can have the amazing stories they once had.
I like the Wisps (they are cute tho I would prefer if we would have 7 types and not 17... quality over quantity Sega, yikes), but Sega should not shoehorn them into every game... if they are in at least give them a very good reason to be in the story and not just use them as power-ups. Sonic already has a good move-set we don't need more filler. If they will make another Chao garden then the Wisps can be there like the Chaos and that would be at least a good place for them, they could be even used as Chao power-ups so they wouldn't interfere with the main gameplay.
@@nanivt1902 yeah that the probpem with sega if a new idea fails the first time they scrap it and nevr use it again but if a new idea does work the first time like the wisp they shoehorn them in future stuff even if they have no reason to be there
Notice how all these problems where introduced during the Meta era. Hell, two out of three of these problems, the Wisps and the comedic and self-deprecating humor replacing serious stories, where introduced in the very first game of the era.
1. The whole "two worlds" concept between classic and modern 2. Zeti 3. The terrible treatment of many characters, especially Knuckles, Shadow, Tails, and Metal Sonic
@@party11440 Maybe some Wispons sucked so much Hyper Go On Energy from the Wisps, that they turned into Nega Wisps? Although, didn't the Robots from Eggman all use White Wisps as a Power Source? Might be the reason, then.
Cool video, and you have some solid points. However, I do have some constructive criticism for you. 13:27 The thing is, it's not supposed to. Sonic Boom (especially the TV show) is its own separate continuity, largely divorced from the main game timeline (which is already a clusterfuck in terms of lore). Heck, last I checked, _every_ Sonic TV show took place in its own continuity, even if they did borrow events and characters from the games. I will admit, the action in the Boom cartoon is sorely lacking, but it's not meant to be like the rest of the franchise, it's essentially a parody of itself. You're hating on the Boom TV show not because of any actual faults (save for the action), but because of its premise itself as a comedy, which is honestly kind of unfair to something so otherwise innocuous. It's like hating on the Sonic franchise as a whole because it features anthropomorphized animals or because it's a platformer series. Would you be as angry about the Boom TV show if the games didn't follow the comedy direction? That's it. Aside from the delivery on some of your points (the "hinting at chao" bit felt _incredibly_ Forced, I think it might have been your tone of voice), I really like the rest of this video. I really hope Sonic's writing gets better so that more of these videos don't have to be made, though. The constant negativity around this franchise hurts my soul.
Yeah I more or less feel the same way. This more of a community pet peeve, but one thing that bothers me, is when people make bad faith criticisms on the games or don’t look at things from a different perspective and give credit where it’s due. They blame Sonic Team for not listening, when in fact they are, they’re taking the wrong advice and learn the wrong lesson. Cuz Colors was a response to the criticism of Unleashed. People were annoyed with the expansive cast of characters, and now Sonic is the only one allowed to resolve any problems. Can’t have a story where anthro characters take a situation seriously or have compelling arcs cuz their anthro characters (like honestly that really shouldn’t matter anymore cuz Undertale and the Sonic movie exists). And don’t get me started on the whole thing with humans and constantly bringing back Green Hill. That being said I hope the negative feedback of Forces leads to positive results. Especially since Pontaff aren’t the writers anymore and Sonic is gonna have a new voice. Edit: Scratch the part about the new voice.
The idw comics are really serious right now and really good. They had the metal virus which literally turned people into zombies. Cream saw her mother changed right in front of he and is mentally scarred from it. Its just really good right now
There's such a thing as going too far in one direction. The Zombot Arc was that thing. You expect me to believe that you all hated the Shadow the Hedgehog game for "being too dark and edgy," but are okay with this shock value-fest? I know people who aren't fans of the 2010s of Sonic who don't even like the IDW comics, and they especially didn't like the Zombot Arc because of how it relies on characters acting stupid in order for the plot to progress. IDW Sonic in and of itself is already shallow, especially when the freakin' planet doesn't have a NAME. The first year ended off with a repeat of Sonic Heroes's story with the return of Neo Metal Sonic, and next year, we are gifted with a sudden shift to a pseudo-zombie apocalypse. And what's annoying is that at the end of this arc, there are no consequences for Eggman beyond his machine getting busted and he retreats. The dumbest thing to come out of this is how Sonic somehow believes that, after all the crap Eggman has pulled, there's still goodness in him. IDW Sonic is not that good to me.
i agree with all of them. wisps and zavok have overstayed. the concept of sonic being a more comedic franchise doesnt bother me that much, as long if the execution is good or doesnt affect the gameplay. but heres the thing, the execution isnt good. we got these incredibly cheesy and unfunny jokes created by the new sonic writers its just so bad, even the early archie sonic comics and the adventures of sonic the hedgehog did a better job at comedy than the newer titles. sonic boom is a perfect example of the idea done right, it doesnt take itself seriously and cracks jokes all the time, but this time the jokes are actually funny. forces is a horrible example of sonic being a funny guy, the plot expects us to take it seriously but its full with bad jokes and badly written characters which is only a fraction of why forces story was a complete mess. great video chaomix!
I 100% agree with this video. If they keep bringing all these horrible tropes back in current games, least give me a "Chip" Cameo with his necklace or something. Even Sega don't give hints to that, yet we get 1$ Bowser with his Mario Kart item Wisps.
Sometimes i get myself thinking, if we had Sonic extreme, Tiara Buboowski was going to continue in the series, and she would have a 2D gameplay in The Adventure games, and a Rival in SA2... because she was meant to have a 2D gameplay in Sonic Extreme...
I agree with the not a comedy point. I mean I believe the funniest line to me in the entire series is in 06 when Eggman says to shadow on the train... "Wouldn't the door have been easier?"
These are pretty accurate to me, but I don't mind the wisps as long as they stay in Colors where they belong. Tho one personal pet peeve for me is people calling Sonic 06 glitchy, if that counts. Ik it's more of an outside thing than any issues within the game, but no, no it is not glitchy. To be fair, I haven't played the PS3 version, which is actually an older build of the game, but I have 100%ed the 360 version, and yes it has glitches, but it's not glitchy. I find SADX and the Genesis version of Sonic 2 to be more glitchy for crying out loud.
13:04 I respectfully disagree with this because Sonic Boom isn’t an serious action show. It’s a comedy series, it’s not meant to be serious, Sonic X goes to a different direction, it’s an actual attempt to be serious. I think other point’s after are valid.
When you said people who haven't subscribed to chaomix need to rethink their life choices, I scrolled down to subscribe, only to realize, I had already subscribed.
the thing i dislike the MOST is shadow's personality change. recent media have tried so hard to make shadow like how he used to be which is almost cute, but i can't *stand* idw shadow.
@@Terminal_Apotos I'd rather they not bring them back if they can't think of a GOOD reason, or just not explain it and have us think of one (like everything else in this series)
It's explained in the IDW Comics; They stay in the Capsules by choice, waiting on the Battlefield to help the Resistance. Each Wispon also includes a Wisp by default for attacking, to use the special abilities a second Wisp of the same kind is needed (hence the capsules).
1.) I really want Chao back, but it's not gonna happen anymore. Because the Wisps replaced them for some reason. 2.) Also, I still hate the Deadly Six.
I feel the main reason all the more recent Sonic games have been comedies is because SO MANY people online were complaining about how "a story about a blue cartoon hedgehog who collects rings, runs really fast, and fights an evil egg man wants to take itself seriously." I've seen this complaint so often on so many videos that I wouldn't be surprised if it affected Sonic Team and Sega, so since then, they've strictly been making their stories less serious. As for Sonic Forces, it's almost like they couldn't decide if they wanted the story to be serious or a comedy, so they mixed the 2 together. And sure, it's possible to have a serious story with comedic moments, but the story for Sonic Forces was disappointing in my opinion. Honestly, I can take a serious story in a Sonic game seriously. The only exception would be Shadow the Hedgehog, because that game was trying way too hard to be serious, just for the sake of being serious. If a story has got to be serious, it needs to be compelling.
This may be controversial, but I would say the games between Sonic Riders and Sonic and the Black Knight had a better balance of comedy and seriousness in the series compared to the Roger Craig Smith era, where there were occasional jokes but it didn't dominate the entire mood of the story.
Fun fact: The existence of wisps in the other games is actually explained in the now cancelled mobile game "Sonic Runners" where it's explained the Wisps stayed on Sonic's World (god I hate this name, couldn't they keep "Mobius"???) because they liked it here, hence why e see them again after Colors!
Honestly I can deal with the Wisps, and the Zeti, but the one change that is my biggest pet peeve is The writing because by Sega trying to play a safe and go through a kid friendly route, they ultimately dumb down their characters making them likable and a shell of their former selves
My 3: 1. Sonic's new comedic approach (and the cringe) 2. No Ryan Drummond as Sonic :( 3. Literally EVERY Sonic fan saying that Sonic Adventure 2 is the best 3D Sonic game, next to Colors. (if you can't tell, my favorite Sonic game is Adventure 1)
The Boom show did have continuity, did interesting multiverse stuff, and honestly set itself up for a S3 that never came :( I went in thinking I'd hate it, and it's my favorite iteration of the Sonic cartoons honestly, having seen all of them. The Boom cartoon also does a really good job of fan service (not the lewd kind) callbacks without being cringey about it imo
The Boom cartoon really did a lot of interesting things. And it is my favorite out of all the Sonic cartoons. Boom did a lot of good things with the various anthropomorphic animals in Bygone Village. Dave the Intern has an entire character story of being a fast food worker who lives with his parents and wants to be a villain. Tails did have a canonical romance with Zooey in Boom. TW Barker has a storyline of being a circus ringmaster and lawyer. The Boom villagers were way more interesting than the human characters of Sonic X.
I have to go with chaomix on this one because one of the big reasons I don't like the boom show is everything Chaomix said and no character development, and those characters definitely needed it, especially sonic. The boom tv show was such a couple funny jokes but everything else was terrible pretty much every other sonic show leaves boom in the dust

Yeah I don't like the comedy tone either. Sonic adventure 2 was a game with hedgehogs being pursued by the military, secret pyramid rockets, a death star, hedgehogs going super saian to fight a giant lizard in space, and through all that ridiculous nonsense, it treated itself seriously, and you know what? It absolutely worked. Sonic can be fun and absurd and cool and serious all at the same time
I'm actually fine with the Wisps becoming a one-time-use series powerup. It's fine that they are extremely situational. However, the fact that they are situational is undermined by the fact that you get the Wisp in the exact spot you need it. Colors somewhat worked around this by making Wisps unavailable until you unlocked them for the first time in a later level, pushing the player to replay old levels to see where newly unlocked Wisps could be used. For an exploration-centric game like Colors, with all its Red Rings, that worked fine. If Wisps are intended to become one-time-use powerups for the series, however, they should be hidden off of the main path and given to the player before they actually become useful. The player should be expected to hold onto them for some time without losing them (e.g. through taking damage) in order to access secrets. You could even frame it as a game of hide and seek, with the Wisps hiding somewhere (although VERY conspicuously) in the level. That gets them out of capsules, explains why they aren't on their home planet, and explains why they aren't located exactly where you need them. They also need to be integrated more smoothly into the level design and Sonic's moveset. The Hover and Cube powerups are huge pacebreakers because they are so slow, and the Rhythm powerup is just conceptually dumb.
Wisps: I've always liked them, but I do see your points, and I do wish the Chao would return. The Zeti: I don't mind them but yeah, they really aren't much compared to the other villains Sonic has had. Sonic being a comedy: While I do enjoy a lot the humor, especially in Sonic Boom and all the Sonic Mania stuff, I do miss when we had more serious stories. I think the IDW comics have given us some of the best Sonic stories in a long time because they take themselves more seriously and they know how to use all the characters.
I don't understand why there is any need of the Wisps. Why not use the characters? The characters don't have to be playable but they can be used as power ups and it would show that they are actually doing something. Why not have Knuckles as drill? Think about it. Let's say we are fighting the final boss of Sonic Colors, what if Eggman fired some projectiles and all we have to do is use knuckles to dig a whole in the ground then we can just need to perform a stomp move to get into the whole and we can move freely in the ground made by Knuckles tunneling through. We can only move freely in the ground for only 6 seconds though; don't make it overpowering. Why not have Eggman fire a fiery attack. We can summon Blaze the Cat to create a fire wall to put out the flames of Eggman's attack; attacking fire with fire. Since Vector has powerful jaws, why not summon him to use as frenzy. Or summon Vector to create a bubble gum bomb in front of Sonic and we use Sonic to perform a homing attack on that bubble gum bomb to rush it forward to blow up enemies in front of us. You could've used Tails as a hover. You could've used Shadow; call forth Shadow and perform a homing attack on Shadow and he will use his rocket shoes, while holding Sonic, and rocket upward into the air. You could have used Silver as laser. Sonic rolls into a ball while Silver surrounds Sonic in psychokinetic energy and then release for a bouncing attack. Espio is a ninja and uses shuriken spikes and is the only character in Sonic to stick to walls without falls during triangle jump. Why not have press a button to call forth Espio and together Sonic and Espio grab each other's arms and spin into a ball that has to purposes. Sonic and Espio clashing together together would form a ball that has both speed(from Sonic) and being able to stick to walls because of sticking and spiky shurikens. (From Espio) The characters can be used as power ups. People say they don't want to play as the other characters and Sonic team doesn't make the other characters playable just because of what happened the last time they were playable in Sonic 06. WELL WE DON'T NEED TO PLAY AS THEM! Just use the characters as power ups to provide an extra ability to Sonic that Sonic can't do. That way, the gameplay is more dynamic and diverse and the characters can CTUALLY DO SOMETHING besides being side kicks and act like cheerleaders making bad kiddy jokes. this is such an easy problem to fix and Sonic team doesn't think about that. How hard is it to make the other characters be additional powers to add into a game. We can only paly as Sonic and have the characters only be used as power ups. SIMPLE!!!! The fans make better material than Sonic team and that is embarrassing on their part.
The one place I actually can stand Zavok is in the IDW comics. They actually felt like writing him as a character and made him feel like a threat instead of being some red guy.
Definitely agree with all three of these. Wisps and Zavok need to go away and while I think Sonic Boom is hilarious, it is mostly in the writing, not the fact that it's Sonic. Cringe comedy Sonic has really overstayed its welcome.
the way I see it, Sega just needs to fix a few things, and i see them as *key elements to success:* 1. *FIX THE PERSONALITIES AND CHARACTERS OF THE SONIC CAST.* since they have been going farther and farther from being acting like themselves since after 2005, which started with Shadow, ever since his love, pride, and honor has died down to pure edginess and a pure non caring brute, its starting to spread to others not being themselves every new game 2. *THEY REALLY NEED TO HOLD BACK ON THE COMEDY.* it went from perfect moments to constantly almost every line 3. *THEIR MODELS AND DESIGNS HAVENT CHANGED FOR LITERALLY 2 DECADES.* they need to change something with cast because there's WAY TO MANY plot holes on their age connecting with the story and not to mention nothing new with their designs since like 2005, besides Sonic Boom 4. *DOING THINGS AT THE RIGHT TIME LIKE THEY SAID THEY WOULD!* Sonic Origins is a perfect example! they announced it to be out before Sonic Movie 2 and yet we haven't seen ANYTHING about it since it was 1st revealed, it shouldn't be that hard to just put something old on modern hardware! they always go on about a low budget but they could EASILY sell so many copies if they release something at the right time! if they do it at the same time as the movie or right after it, that'll only make their chances of making less money higher because people are gonna either focus on the game or the movie, not at the same time!
For me, it's these four things. 1. Tails being a wimp in newer games. (Looking at you, Forces.) 2. The mere EXISTENCE of Zavok. Well, all of the Deadly Six, really. 3. Warren Graff and Ken Pontac's writing. 4. Tails' voice in Heroes.
Very well done here. I agreed on the nitpicks I do have some points to add on to them as well. 1. Regarding Wisps. If Sega's REALLY going to keep them around, then why not just have them fill a similar role to the animals and Chaos Drives in Chao Gardens. Their color power alone would add a lot of extra variety as to how you raise your Chao and all of their abilities could all be used to spice up events like Chao Racing and Chao Karate to make them both feel more interesting. 2. I HATE the Zeti. Absolutely cannot stand them. (They are all as important as Orbot and Cubot to me. In other words, not at all.) They look much more like NiGHTS characters to me. I will NEVER understand why Zavok keeps coming back when even in the Sonic universe, EVERYBODY HATES THEM! Infinite also had WAY more potential to be utilized than all of them combined. 3. Sonic was always meant to be focused on action and adventure. Humor can be fun, but it's a VERY difficult thing to get right. All of those memes have just made this problem even worse. There's also the fact that even a game like Forces (where Eggman WINS) is so scared to even TRY to feel genuine. The comedy focus has done more damage to Sonic than people realize. They threw any lore, continuity and character development out the window a LONG time ago. Unfortunately, the more they cower from stuff like Shadow or Sonic 06, (which are both very old at this point,) the more they rely on nostalgia and memes, and that hurts the series. They've been stuck in the early 1990's for over the last decade and this needs to stop before it's too late.
The biggest issue with Zavok in particular is that his character design DOESN'T reflect his personality at all. His appearance makes him look like a raging brute, but in actuality, he presents himself as a schemer. His design and his character are incongruous with each other, which would be fine if that dichotomy was used to dramatic effect, but it isn't at all. His design is just ill-suited to his character. Like for example, if Zavok had the exact same personality he had now, but you replaced his design with Mogul's, I'd hate him a lot less because that actually does communicate both a sense of brute strength AND an intellect. On top of that, it would also fit a lot better with the rest of the series, because just like the wisps, the Zeti look completely out of place among the rest of Sonic's cast.
When Sonic X got on Netflix I watched some of it for the first time since the Saturday morning 4Kids anime blocks completely went away. Rewatching it on Netflix, It's a lot funnier now. Like, the part when Chris was trying to hide them from Mr. Tanaka and Ella, and a lot of those episodes where they weren't adapting anything yet were funny. Even when they started adapting SA1 and 2 I still found comedy in places that I hadn't seen as a kid. Like when Sonic meets Shadow for the first time, I realized that Shadow was just messing with Sonic the whole time, and he knew that he was pissing Sonic off. It most likely was not intentional there, but I still found it funny. I think Sonic is funnier when it doesn't try so hard to be funny and isn't trying to be so self aware like it does now.
@@LuigitheMan20 Basically the idea was that the wisps liked sonic so much that they left their home planet to live on his world. Basically the weak shit you'd expect from a mobile game.

I don't think the problem is being afraid to create more dark and serious stories I think the problem is more in how the community reacts by making a storm in the glass of water and exaggerating a lot, They do not innovate because they received a massive criticism every time they tried, and don’t tell me it’s because they don’t try or because they do it wrong, 2006, Werehog, Forces, R, Sonic all stars racing, and Forces all these done great works, but the fandom overexagerate in how bad they think something is bad, and forget how good something is, get it??
I don't know how in 06 elise having a crush on sonic would be a good idea, they literally vanished cream in all stars racing and forces and talking about forces i like that game but classic sonic is tedious and the levels are lineal and when it gets good you are like 10 seconds from ending it , so i understeand the fans we are all tired of the same shit for literally 10 years
Feels like Sonic is not himself anymore. Because after Shadow the Hedgehog (video game) ruined Sonic 06 and the entire franchise, Sega turned Sonic into something else (something worse).

Also, I'm sure Zavok is basically wasted potential likely cause SEGA wanna keep hootin and tootin their cool nee badguy voiced by Gamma and Dark Oak's Japanese voice, Jouji Nakata.
I wholeheartedly agree about Zavok and the Zeti. Every fucking time I see them included in something, I stay far the fuck away from it. Which is a shame, because the game looks fun, but that eyesore/waste of space/uninteresting pos, is ruining it. lost world failed Sega, harder than 06, and not because it was a buggy mess, but because the story just sucks a big fat one and feels like an insult to the intelligence of your player base. as for the wisps, i also agree, they need to stop. not because i don't like them, but because they've overstayed their welcome. Hell just bring back the babylon rogues and include them in a not riders game. or at the very least just stop pretending that the chao wouldn't make you a shit load of cash when millions are bitching at you about it, Sega! sonic can be funny, but treating it as a pure comedy or juvenile is god awful. having the occasional smartass quip is hilarious, but don't kill the tone of the story because "lul ebin may-may"
Number 2. Putting Zavok next to Metal Sonic, Chaos, and Shadow is like making a team of Goku, Saitama, and Superman, but then you throw Krillin into the mix. Number 3. The reason why the Sonic Boom TV show was comedy focused was because the Boom series was a joke to begin with. Meanwhile Sonic X set up and recreated the events of SA1 and 2 for the first two seasons.

The problem is the lack of balance. But at least, the "dark" Sonic games never outright broke continuity.
@@ChiefMedicPururu Oh yeah, 100% true on that
The only games that can realistically be perceived as "too dark" are Shadow the Hedgehog and '06, which are widely considered to be not very good.

Replace Wisp with Me and that what Sega did to me.
Most of my pet peeves is how some characters are written. Previous, not grammy award winning characters but ones with meat to them, have had that meat stripped away and are made into their most basic form. My favourites include:
Tails: The loley tech sidekick
Shadow: The moody brooder who doesn't have friends
Knuckles: The Blockhead
and Sonic: The guy who just stands there cracking jokes.
Also don't forget:
Silver: Just another hedgehog whose future is always doomed.

The thumbnail produces a feeling of accomplishment in me
Your pfp produces a feeling of anger in me
My three least favourite things in the Sonic Franchise are (In reverse order):
3: Classic Sonic in Sonic Forces. (It tarnished the excellent Sonic Mania)
2: Overuse of the Wisps and Zavok beyond Sonic Colours and Lost World. (This is a joint problem for me)
1: The comedic tone of the entire "Meta Era" of Sonic and the Character Assassination of Sonic's Friends, ESPECIALLY Tails and Shadow!
No
@@inendlesspain4724 Like. WHY HYDROCITY OF ALL THINGS.

Tails returning to his Adventure era personality is a must.
The reason they keep adding Zavok to literally any and every piece of sonic media is that lizuka just wants to push the “light hearted and wacky” agenda to the series, and thinks zavok is a good role model
Well, you can say now that Izuka is a hack
EW 🤢
Role model? He tried to sucked te very life essence out of a planet. His actions cause the implied desths of Amy and Knuckles! A good role model for who?!
i know why they keep bringing back zavok they want zavok to be their own bowser
We'll just laugh about it and keep doing our thing."
Whatever happened to the SEGA that liked to push against the norm?

Heck even a side game like Black Knight has a better tone than....bAlDy mCnOsEhAir.
I’d argue Forces in in the same category, but with greatly inferior graphics and gameplay.
Very nice video. My personal nit-pick is also that sonic has little to no depth now.. I think sa2 level of darkness was good and the quips were great! But now everything feels so childish and lighthearted for no reason other than "we dont want to be called edgy like we ere because of shadow's game"
Shadow is a good game tbh
Something funny I was just thinking about your opinion on designs of the Wisps and Zeti looking out of place in the Sonic universe is that as someone who was introduced to the series through the Classic era, I remember a time when Big the Cat and the Chao looked unusual for the series. Not that I didn't like them, I always loved the Chao and wish the Chao Garden would return. I just remember seeing their artwork for the first time and thinking they didn't look like Sonic characters. These days they've been in the series for so long (even with their roles diminished) that we kind of take them for granted.
Pre 2010s Sonic gave us Sonic cutscenes and stories that were worth thinking about and discussing. 2010s Sonic gave us TH-cam Poop sources.

That thumbnail is very accurate to my feelings too
For me personally when it comes to the Sonic series: It’s bad writing, bad world building and bad balance of comedy and drama.

The disease outbreak storyline type actually fits Sonic really well
There's such a thing as going too far in one direction.
"Because it Relies on Character's being Stupid in Order for the Plot to Progress" *Cries in Shadow* also Sonic's a Prick for no reason
i agree with all of them. wisps and zavok have overstayed. the concept of sonic being a more comedic franchise doesnt bother me that much, as long if the execution is good or doesnt affect the gameplay. but heres the thing, the execution isnt good. we got these incredibly cheesy and unfunny jokes created by the new sonic writers its just so bad, even the early archie sonic comics and the adventures of sonic the hedgehog did a better job at comedy than the newer titles. sonic boom is a perfect example of the idea done right, it doesnt take itself seriously and cracks jokes all the time, but this time the jokes are actually funny. forces is a horrible example of sonic being a funny guy, the plot expects us to take it seriously but its full with bad jokes and badly written characters which is only a fraction of why forces story was a complete mess. great video chaomix!

2.) Also, I still hate the Deadly Six.
Mine is Chris from sonic X. He’s the most annoying little crap I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

Technically that was Sonic Runners that explains why the wisps are back...
@@lightgivemepower6425 Oh.
Finally someone else who enjoyed Boom!
(From Espio)
The characters can be used as power ups.

Definitely agree with all three of these. Wisps and Zavok need to go away and while I think Sonic Boom is hilarious, it is mostly in the writing, not the fact that it's Sonic. Cringe comedy Sonic has really overstayed its welcome.
the way I see it, Sega just needs to fix a few things, and i see them as *key elements to success:*
1. *FIX THE PERSONALITIES AND CHARACTERS OF THE SONIC CAST.* since they have been going farther and farther from being acting like themselves since after 2005, which started with Shadow, ever since his love, pride, and honor has died down to pure edginess and a pure non caring brute, its starting to spread to others not being themselves every new game
2. *THEY REALLY NEED TO HOLD BACK ON THE COMEDY.* it went from perfect moments to constantly almost every line
3. *THEIR MODELS AND DESIGNS HAVENT CHANGED FOR LITERALLY 2 DECADES.* they need to change something with cast because there's WAY TO MANY plot holes on their age connecting with the story and not to mention nothing new with their designs since like 2005, besides Sonic Boom
This is a thumbnail premydaremy would approve of cause he hates the wisps
For me, it's these four things.
1. Tails being a wimp in newer games. (Looking at you, Forces.)
Did you watch the OG JP version? Charm is through the roof, very enjoyable.
6:00 it's great how we've found out that Chao are actually literally alien babies now hahaha
Fun fact, that wisp issue was addressed in sonic runners' story.
What'd it say?
@@LuigitheMan20 Basically the idea was that the wisps liked sonic so much that they left their home planet to live on his world. Basically the weak shit you'd expect from a mobile game.
8:19
Bowser: The pose I want to draw
Zavok: The pose I end up drawing
I actually really like the wisps, but they need to be used in a different way, and they should not replace the chao. I think it would be great to see they interact with chao
1:34 I actually like wisps.
6:42 I also like the Zeti.
10:38 the Sonic Comedy is fine.
Conclusion: please don’t hate me for my opinion.
Agree with the last one HEAVY
1: Colors-Onward Writing
2: Classic Sonic
3: Cream the Rabbit getting shafted
I don't think the problem is being afraid to create more dark and serious stories I think the problem is more in how the community reacts by making a storm in the glass of water and exaggerating a lot, They do not innovate because they received a massive criticism every time they tried, and don’t tell me it’s because they don’t try or because they do it wrong, 2006, Werehog, Forces, R, Sonic all stars racing, and Forces all these done great works, but the fandom overexagerate in how bad they think something is bad, and forget how good something is, get it??
I don't know how in 06 elise having a crush on sonic would be a good idea, they literally vanished cream in all stars racing and forces and talking about forces i like that game but classic sonic is tedious and the levels are lineal and when it gets good you are like 10 seconds from ending it , so i understeand the fans we are all tired of the same shit for literally 10 years
13:50 You actually cannot unhear the PINGAS
Feels like Sonic is not himself anymore. Because after Shadow the Hedgehog (video game) ruined Sonic 06 and the entire franchise, Sega turned Sonic into something else (something worse).
Shadow was fun, people’s reactions to it is what ruined it
14:50 I'm also sure it's cause of SEGA hiring former Happy Tree Friends writers for such bullshit.
Thanks, Pontac and Graff.
Nah, not Krillin.
It would be Gru.
