How tight should you do up car wheel nuts? Yes they can be overdone and damaged.

I always prefer doing it the simple wrench by hand so I can get the feel myself for how tight is too tight or if it’s too loose

There is a bit of confusion about this subject, I’ve often had customers say don’t put my wheels on with your electric wheel guns because I can’t get the nuts off at the roadside but however most of the tightening comes at torquing time. Where the wheel nuts are tightened to the correct setting! If we don’t do that then you’ll end up having your wheels fall off. If your unlucky enough to own a VW Crafter then your torque figure is about 260-280nm so yeah gooooood luck with that

Sounds like you correctly torque wheels and that is awesome. The problem comes when the nuts are ripped on with a gun, and they are massively over torqued at that punt. Then the shop comes along with a torque wrench and it clicks. But if the nut hasn't just moved then it is over torqued. I supposed the shop can then say it is torqued or more than. But that is the problem. The nut needs to move more with the torque wrench or it is over done. MRT

i always tell DIYers remove with Battery Impact Wrench & tight with Torque Wrench\Digital Torque Monitor & dont repeat clicking\buzz sound. torquing is critical! 2131

Just look in your owner's manual. It will tell you how much torque to apply. You will need a torque wrench, which can be had pretty cheap.

Hi Yes there is a reason. When the wheel is firm on the ground you can get a true feel for how tight it is. You can also normally then get it tighter as it isn’t moving on the brake or gearbox. MRT

Certainly NOT 140 Newton metres ! That’s way to tight, you’ll risk distorting the rotor and never get them undone without that long bar which you won’t have on the road the day you get a puncture!
